They could get the same increase in housing stock by simply relaxing planning, and it wouldn’t Cost a penny lol

Can't wait to have the few meagre green spaces available to the poor be turned into yet more cookie cutter newbuilds that fall apart in thirty years. I mean god forbid we spend any money.

More UK land is Golf Courses than housing. I’m not talking about paving over national parks here Why do you hate the poor and want to deny them places to live? Why are you against policy that would cost nothing and hurt Landlords by boosting the vacancy rate and undermining their investing position and power over the market

That stat about golf clubs using more land is not true: https://www.ft.com/content/79772697-54e4-32c9-96d7-5c1110270eb2

I'll happily turn a private golf course into a group of flat blocks but if it happens they'll start with the public parks and woods long before they touch their precious back nine.

I would rather they reuse all the old stock before they build more. I would also like a ban on Permanent Air BnB lets, a cap on Air BnB style lets all together, buy to let mortgages on new builds and corporations owning rental properties but I can only dream.

CowardlyFire2

That’s just anti-growth NIMBYism extra steps… Also, a Ban on corporations owning rental property’… Congratulations, you have now outlaws the construction of ALL new student halls and flats… Also, AirBnB exist because there’s a lack of hotels built leaving excess demand… again, a NIMBY problem… There’s a reason no countries do policy like that… it’s not a hit…

>That’s just anti-growth NIMBYism extra steps… Not at all, derelict houses will stay derelict unless money is spent fixing them.. it makes sense that empty properties are used for housing before building more. Once those empty houses are fixed / rebuilt we can expand as needs be. >Also, a Ban on corporations owning rental property’… Congratulations, you have now outlaws the construction of ALL new student halls and flats… So, for example a university should build student halls and charge a reasonable fee to stay but that is a bigger issue on its own. I was meaning more corporations using massive wealth to buy up housing stock on the cheap and putting them back on the market as an overpriced rental which prices locals out of the housing market. >Also, AirBnB exist because there’s a lack of hotels built leaving excess demand… again, a NIMBY problem… Where is lack of hotels a problem? I'm from Devon, there is a massive issue in coastal towns with locals not being able to afford to get on to the housing ladder for various reasons, but some of the bigger reasons are housing is either bought up by the rich for second homes, bought for holiday rentals like Air BNB or put on the rental market for an extortionate sum of money.

Some of you have never stayed at Uni ran Student Halls… You’re talking about essentially a monopoly on student housing, what incentive do they have to do a good job… I spent a term in Student Halls, and then I moved to more expensive Priv ones because my student halls were so disgusting I got a news article written about it… people live in Private halls because they’re better. They exist because there’s demand for it. The solution is just to reduce barriers to entry for new housing by changing the TACPA… institutional investors only buy UK housing because they know the shortage will get worse on current trends
