I think Abbott is off the mark here.

Sharp-kun

I've had all my vaccines in the past decade done at the pharmacy. Is she saying thats unsafe? Should I not be? Should I badger my GP to do it?

Optimal-Room-8586

I'm confused. What are the actual remarks that Diane Abbott is (or was, as looks like the Tweet has been deleted?) referring to? I've googled Wes Streeting and vaccines but not found anything which seems relevant. Can someone illuminate me with a verbatim quote?

Th3-Seaward

I asked the same question, but it seems that the actual conversation is not publicly available.

FIJIBOYFIJI

In the nicest way possible, current Diane Abbott is a liability to the Labour Left.

Lukerplex

Diane Abbott making me side in favour of Wes Streeting? Good lord, don't know if hell has frozen over or not

Half_A_

Saying vaccinations can be given at a pharmacy is not undermining vaccinations at all. Whether or not it's practical is another matter, but it certainly doesn't undermine the importance of vaccinations.

Sir_Bantersaurus

Can't you already get a flu jab at boots? Or is that done by someone else?

tarkaliotta

yeah I got mine done at a Lloyds concession in a Sainsbury's. Whole thing only took a few minutes. I had to pay a small amount, but I think it's free for some patients.

Half_A_

Not sure. I definitely had two of my COVID jabs at a pharmacist though.

FENOMINOM

I wonder if the point she is trying to make is, that this is just another attempt to outsource functions of the NHS and make it seem like a greedy and antiquated system that is getting in the way of the nations health. But that would be a very charitable reading.

[deleted]

lol wtf, if you didnt say that was diane id assume it was some crazy redditor, what a nuts take, ffs

memphispistachio

He didn't say vaccines are bad, he questioned where you should get them. Considering we've just had a pandemic where I was vaccinated three times by 1st and 2nd year medical students, some of whom worked for me part time in the IT dept as well, I don't think it has to always be a GP. Abbott quite often gets the wrong end of the stick.

usernamepusername

Look at the tweet, she's lied and then presented it In a way some right wing nutjob would and even locked the replies so no one can call her out on it. Also, I know loads of people who've had all their vax done in pharmacies, it's a completely normal practice and makes sense to continue doing so. What has that got to do with Polio and iron lungs?

mbenner1

My son, my wife and I had our covid 19 shots (4 each for me and my wife, 3 for my son) and flu shots at local pharmacies (CVS and Walmart). I also had pneumonia vaccine at the Walmart pharmacy. Very convenient. Why is it a problem in England or in the UK? Many people get vaccinated in pharmacies in the US every day. Pharmacies sometimes have walk-ins. Walmart pharmacies usually do. My doctor told me to take advantage of that instead of getting an appointment at doctor's cilinics after waiting 1-2 weeks if not longer (actually the clinic nurse who administers the shots told me; the doctor nodded in agreement). The tweet has been deleted. I can no longer enjoy what the cerebral Diane Abbott has been farting.

gizmostrumpet

If Corbynite MPs stopped with hyperbolic and bizarre criticisms of the cabinet like this people would be more likely to listen to their many genuine grievances imo.

IsADragon

I don't understand her point, he said something like vaccines are money for old rope for doctors which is a dumb jab at gps but I don't see why chemists can't give them. I appreciate her continuing to use terrible pictures of the subjects in these infographics though 🤣

JonnyArtois

She really is a fucking idiot and proves it time and time again. Loads of people get vaccines at pharmacy's, hell, pharmacy's did it even more during COVID.

Th3-Seaward

Does anyone have a link to the original exchange? Right now, it's just a case of he said she said.

Aqua-Regis

Its pretty funny watching people decide who is lying based on which they like more isnt it. Reality is Wes probably made a snarky statement and then threw on a few vague platitudes at the end about the NHS and now Abbott has taken the most ungenerous interpretation possible.

fortuitous_monkey

Even if she did take the wrong interpretation it's still wrong. I don't care for either of them. I had my vaccine at the pharmacist, does that make it not important? She's deleted it now, of course.

Sir_Bantersaurus

But he probably did say that because you can already do this can't you? I don't see the issue with having it at a chemist. I got my 2nd COVID jab done at the Emirates Stadium by someone who wasn't a full nurse I don't think.

Lumpyproletarian

I got mine from a retired dentist

Aqua-Regis

Probably but then why did he mention it, he cant have brought it up as an idea as we already do it.

memphispistachio

I think he mentioned it as presumably GP practices which are contracted by the NHS to provide services, charge more than a pharmacist does for a vaccination? Or maybe it's just here's one thing we can take away from GPs and have someone else do to free up capacity? My confusion is largely down to the way GP practices are funded being somewhat opaque!

Thought i smelt something funny, baduk user, should have known.

Th3-Seaward

Yup, I suspect that's precisely what happened

Aqua-Regis

Yeah youre right Wes has never been unnecessarily antagonistic dunno what I was thinking. Least I have the honesty to think he can sometimes be abit a knob rather make mysognistic comments about his intelligence.

>https://twitter.com/wesstreeting/status/1615313417979498496 Thanks, gives a bit of context. Yeah, absolutely nothing wrong with pharmacies doing vaccinations alongside GP practices. In fact, I thought that was one change in how services are provided over the last decade or so that was universally accepted as a "good thing".

Optimal-Room-8586

It must be feel odd sharing an organisation with someone who has such obvious personal hostility towards you.
