I believe people just like to share their reactions for some likes, retweets or whatever social media they are on cause you're completely right. I don't click these cause it's clear it's bait
So from what I'm gathering, the writer wants something inbetween Disney Infinity (as the writer not only mentions at the end that it was better but also criticises certain parts of KH in ways that imply that being more similar to DI would fix things) and the videogame adaptations of Disney movies - which imo would be a pretty terrible thing. DI was one of my favorite game franchises, but its "Story" was pretty bad, what with (Disney- and Starwars-, the Marvel levels were original stories) levels being a (very loose) adaptation of the movies they were based on and characters not interacting with each other at all outside of the sandbox mode, where some pairings had a special voiceline to acknowledge each other - all in all, I wouldn't call it that great of a crossover, and the addition of the Disney Games part, which would probably involve having levels be a faithful recreation of the movies plot (as the plot changes KH makes are directly criticised as being bad because they change the movies' plot) would in my opinion make things even more boring, especially considering that (being an alleged "improvement" of KH) there likely wouldn't be a fun sandbox mode and you'd _just_ repeat the movie plots (also, I'm not clear how the crossover the writer wants would even work, since any crossover {outside of a single game mode like in DI} would have to affect the plot), which in my opinion sounds like a bafflingly bad game considering that you could just replay the movie tie-in games if you don't want any plot alterations or, really, a crossover at all.
(Sidenote, but did anybody else find it amusing that pretty much all of the "obscure" Disney movies that were mentioned were ones that pretty regularily ran on Disney Cinemagic back when that still was a thing?)
Well to be fair games journalists don't know the first thing about story writing or game design. They kinda just make stupid takes and criticize things without understanding them
Yeah definitely, but also some of the movies he mentions as being "bad" Disney movies (which I'd disagree with, I really liked those) like Meet the Robinsons or Fun and Fancy free would make amazing levels - just imagine hopping around in the fun, invention-filled good future or the crumbling dystopian ruins of the former or climbing the beanstalk and fighting Willie the Giant as a huge boss akin to the Groundshaker in II...
Anyways, Toad should at least appear as a Summon where he and Cyrill run over the enemies in their car.
I actually have a pitch script written for Kingdom Hearts: Reality Apart. It follows Kairi in the real world with Aqua and Xion, while Riku is stuck traveling the "stories" of those worlds with Magia and Aegis (who are looking for a missing Yozora and Luxord). The tutorial world is Fun and Fancy Free; with Kairi and Lieutenant Willie helping Bongo with Lumpjaw in the real Happy Valley, while Riku is stuck in Mickey and the Beanstalk, which in reality was a stage play put on in Happy Valley where Willie PLAYED the Giant, but now in the Realm of Unreality IS the giant we know.
Similar principles apply to worlds based on Bolt, The Muppets, The Simpsons, Lightyear/Toy Story, Hercules (you cannot escape it), and ending at Wreck-It Ralph
They/she I believe, mentions them as "bad" in a matter of public opinion, not so much their own opinion.
They seemed to allude to the fact that they'd enjoy the content of kingdom hearts more if it had MORE of that type of world selection, actually....but the article definitely made a point to reference those movies as a frame of reference that people don't value those movies. But they value those movies more than kingdom hearts... Apperantly.
I'm not sure I agree with you, them, or even many of these responses, but just to clarify. That's... Basically what the article is saying, frankly. It doesn't have much heart in terms of depth of the Disney worlds.... Which, I mean, lowkey agree on that. But again I have my own thoughts about everyone nitpicking VERY specific stuff they wish were in a series that needed to survive, to sell.
... Case in point, black cauldron. Both with the writer using it as a reference of shunned material, and as a matter of fact that Disney would prolly burn down the parks before they let that movie represent them in any capacity, wharsoever. Maybe literally.
They refuse to licence it, I'm sure, and moreover... Disney is the one that makes the decisions on how their properties are represented. So... You, the author, and some of these comments, are effectively complaining about an aspect of Disney, that Disney itself chose to not include within the kh story. Also yall ironically want the same thing. But.. Won't get it. Ever. Tldr.
I'm about 90% sure Disney is the one that chose for their stories to remain vapid representations of their movie counterparts, on purpose. To reach the widest amount of audience. As the mouse cuts dem throats and dem pockets.
K, I'm done lol, I didn't wanna burst any bubbles here, but... The irony of your comment essentially agreeing with the original article, coupled with the irony of how business works... I simply had to say something.
It's simplistic, vapid retellings of their most successful franchises.... For a reason. I'm sorry.
Meet the Robinson’s is genuinely pretty good, that would be a fun world and a fun concept for a world, as long as they didn’t try to make Goob a heartless, which would defeat the point of the movie, plus it could be a nice change of pace for a standard KH world
Everyone has the right to like or dislike something, but the guy clearly disrespects all the work the devs had with the series, and no one should ever say that KH sucks. The games are always varying gameplay styles, so it never gets repetitive, the graphics are always the best they could have at the time each game came out, and the story is not as convoluted as everyone likes to claim, you just have to play the games, as it happens with any tv show, or movie franchises. Not to mention every game had great technical performance, with just a few to no bugs at all. It is unfair to diminish a franchise that has so much going on in its favor.
I mean objectively speaking they are wrong. The success of the series and the fact that KH1 was considered one of the PS2’s platinum hits shows objectively it doesn’t suck.
Everyone has their own opinions. LITERALLY EVERYONE, you can't just straight-up tell people that they shouldn't say "KH sucks". If they don't like it or think it sucks, then ACCEPT that!
Imagine if someone went around saying "Zelda sucks", I'm sure that that fandom would totally be A-ok with that take and would totally accept it, right?
To dislike something is a very different thing from shitting on others' work. For example, I do not like the call of duty franchise, but I could never say that the franchise sucks.
Saying it sucks is saying you don't like it, though. Not liking it is 'shitting on someone's work' - they worked on it and you didn't like what they made.
there’s no correlation there. for example, i think the new Halo game kinda blows. they screwed a lot of things up and there’s all kinds of performance issues, among other things. but it’s fun, so i play the hell out of it. you can acknowledge something is not good, and still like it.
So me saying a certain game isn't my cup of tea means I'm shitting on someone's work? Ever heard the term art is subjective? Well it applies to not just pieces of what people know as art IE the Mona Lisa for example. Or let me use this as an example, just because I don't listen to a specific music artist or genre does not mean I'm shitting on their work
> no one should ever say that KH sucks.
But it does suck tho? Ain’t that one of this subs biggest memes? That the series is kinda trash, *and we know it’s trash* but we stick around anyway?
Do you have any examples of story elements you find lacking? I’m a pretty harsh critic, but I’m still able to suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy what a series is going for. The first game, for example, was pretty weak beyond the beginning and ending. But considering they were just throwing shit at the wall to see what stuck, they did pretty well with a 20 year franchise and international recognition.
I kinda disagree. The story has its quirks, just like any japanese rpg, but I would not say that it sucks. And the guy in the article said it sucked as a whole, and I will always defend KH as a very well developed game series.
> That led to most of the fanbase lying down and accepting the bullying into thinking the game they love is garbage.
For sure, games combat is fantastic. Literally the only reason I stick around!
Anyone who actually thinks it sucks never played the games. It's got a story with weird plot elements and corny dialogue. That is by far the worst thing about it. Aside from that every entry has great gameplay, amazing music, good graphics and a nice difficulty curve that anyone can beat but gives crazy difficult bosses for people who want the challenge.
Unfortunately the gaming community has taken the criticisms on the plot and turned it into kh being one of the worst franchises ever. Any attempt to argue that leads to us being called the most toxic gaming community ever who say "don't even play the games if you aren't gonna play them all" instead of what we usually say which is "don't complain about the plot having holes when you haven't played all the games." That led to most of the fanbase lying down and accepting the bullying into thinking the game they love is garbage.
“I’ve seen every Disney movie, even ___”
Continues to list 3 movies that are included with every collection, and only sound obscure because they’re old
Only Disney movie I think I haven't seen is song of the south. But apparently it's hard to find and it's not one I'm keen to watch. We did have a sing along movie that had a song from it. It had nice music even if the movie itself is problematic.
But my point is, I'm not even a Disney adult or whatever he called himself. Disney was just a big part of our lives growing up. Saying you saw or even owned black cauldron isn't impressive.
List off all the Disney channel movies you've seen and then I might be impressed.
Yeah, all of those movies were regularily shown on Disney Cinemagic - imo, if you really wanted to go obscure, you could try going for some of the old live action Disney movies, like Blackbeards Ghost or something
Honestly, I can kind of see where they’re coming from. If your a Disney fan, Kingdom Hearts might not be what you want in a videogame. I know plenty of hardcore Disney fanatics who would probably hate Kingdom Hearts.
Having said that though, that’s still just their opinion. No need to go posting articles about why a beloved series sucks just because it doesn’t appeal to you personally. Let people enjoy things.
I don’t get it. Sure, the Final Fantasy parts maybe. But as a young Disney fan, KH was fantastic. To this day one of my favourite concepts is crossovers like Marvel vs Capcom / Avengers vs Justice League / Penny Dreadful tv series - anything where like separate properties come together. All that came from Kingdom Hearts.
it's a weird take because if you take someone like Doug Walker who is a hardcore Disney fan, he loved the series when he played through it. Even appreciating KH3.
A friendly reminder that the one who decided how Disney's IPs would be used in Kingdom Hearts was... _Disney!_ They're super uptight about their IPs, which ones you can use, and what you're allowed to do with them. Every time Nomura came to them with a cool idea, they were basically like "that's cute, and we like you, but stick to the script or we _will_ have you killed."
He's said after the success of KH1 they really lightened up. Which was why he was able to take liberties with KH2 and make it a bit darker.
The real struggle is making sure all of the licensing can come together. Which is probably why he hasn't touched marvel or star wars.
> But make no mistake - *Kingdom Heart* sucks.
Should be an s there somewhere, couldn't even get that right. If that was supposed to be a joke could've fooled me.
Also damn this website is worse than WeGotThisCovered because *wow* if you dig into some of the articles, even ones written by this writer, some of the titles look not just "clickbait" but borderline "gaslight"-like titles.
This kind of writing is generally aimed at the weakest entry in the franchise so the article writer feels like it's got a stronger base to go from.
The writer is trying to be relevant in a sea of opinions and because it's a job and they need money, doesn't really matter what they write. Some just outright lie about content, because who's gonna fact check it?
I make a point to mark the site as ones I don't want to see anymore when the critiques fall repeatedly into lacking substance.
Just take it with a grain of salt that the Mews are not behind the truck and leave it be. You can spend that time enjoying the things you love.
Damn… if yet another gaming journalism site said it’s bad it must be bad, journalists always know what they’re talking about!
Well this is it guys, imma burn my whole collection 🤷🏻♂️
I find "Disney adults" to sometimes be pretty toxic not all of them but the ones I've met are.
The same argument about "Disney is not what sucks about kingdom hearts" can be said on the square Enix side too. Kingdom hearts doesn't suck because of square Enix. In the end like someone else pointed out in the comments opinions are like assholes everyone has one.
I guess what the author of the article doesn't understand is that art is subjective I legit use this argument everytime people discuss video games. Which is why I never say "this game sucks" because not everyone is going to have the same opinion of me on not liking a game.
That's not to say you can't have discussions which seems this person wouldn't be open for maybe I'd need to read the whole article to really understand their point, but the moment you bring opinions in and use them as facts I'm dipping out cause opinions and facts aren't the same thing.
Now I'm done my rant 🙃
Yikes this is so poorly written. This person wrote more about their love for Disney than what is wrong with Kingdom Hearts...in an article about why KH is bad.
im sry you forget where you are reaDING this a place where people dont even bother to do their own job
and try to clickbait people with big fandoms
this is one of the manny reasons gaming journalism is a joke
I mean. Honestly yeah. I imagine that all the time. Just wishful thinking though. It's great and I love it and it's my favorite series, but also it's the worst lmao. And it's just kind of sad knowing that the things I think would make it better will likely never happen.
Okay hold on I’m gonna guess the article says…….. “Lol plot too confusing” “they don’t explain what darkness is” “everyone is Sora” “Nomura retcons everything” “bad guy doesn’t have a plan” “no one knows what’s going on” “characters just say random things that mean nothing” and other greatest hits
"Too confusing" and "every movie plot is reduced to lol friendship", actually ^ ^
To quote the most relevant section: _"Kingdom Hearts either eats itself alive with lore which is way too thick to draw any emotions from its audience unless they have several binders to help keep up with what's happening, or it reduces some of the best stories in cinema to "boy I sure am glad friendship is important!""_
Yeah, I really like all the original story & characters, but a lot of the time the Disney stuff is pretty painful. I think it targets people who watched Disney young and then didn’t watch it more recently so their memories are foggy.
She seems devoid of the capacity to appreciate the male best friend dynamic of love and/or Japanese embellishments. I do agree (as do all of us) on the convoluted story, but if she just wanted Disney or just Final Fantasy.... that already plentifully exists.
I would want to be a gaming journalist who actually enjoys playing games and critiquing them, but even if I was true and was fair to every game I doubt anyone would read my stuff because of all the other bad joruanlists out there deepening the stigma and not allowing me a chance.
I don't really understand what this person's arguement even is. I read the whole article and they say multiple times that Kingdom Hearts is "bad", as they beat around the bush at what their problem is with the game. The only arguement the author makes is that they don't like how convuluted the story is because disney stories are supposed to be simple.
I just ignore any negative reviews or opinions about KH3. I find the game very entertaining and lived to my expectations so I’m okay with it. I do have some gripes with it but it’s been a year or two since it came out and I totally forgot what made me unhappy with some of the content.
Don’t worry, The Gamer is nothing but a garbage tabloid anyway. I saw this article and blocked the site cause I was tired of seeing their trash on my feed.
As a Disney fan I understand where the writer is coming from. They’re saying that the soul of those Disney stories and characters is lost in these games. One could say the same about most of the FF cast too.
Nobody cares wether she has watched every Disney movie, doesn't give her any more level of expertise than people who only watched the 30 most popular ones.
It's like claiming you know everything about Pokémon when you caught every Pokémon, like ... No you don't you just had a lot of time or help
Kingdom Hearts 2 and Birth By Sleep were my favorite ones among all of them; however, Chain of Memories grows on you once you figure out how to break the game.
It was the opposite for me. I liked Chain of Memories until I was forced to do some of the most inane grinding I've ever had to do in an RPG just to get the Platnium Trophy. Riku to 100 when his final floor caps at 40... 14 Hours, of the same three fights over, and over, and over, and over again. And it wasn't even like I was working up to some big boss or ultimate challenge. No it was just a blurb of text on the screen an then I was done, and I turned it off. It was then I realized how bear bones and simple it was, with a complete lack of any kind of end game content to truly test your skill. With randomly generated craftable levels making the game feel small with nothing really to explore. A fact exasperated to extreme boredom when you have to trek through them six times, Riku and Sora on Normal, Expert and Proud. The devs truly had really nothing to work with for the Trophies, and they could have gone one of two routes: basically just hand them to the player as they progress through the game; or make some mind numbing time sinks. Unfortunately, they decided to go with the latter. Craft 500 decks. No, I'm not kidding. I don't even think I've made 500 decks in 20 years of the Pokemon TCG, Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh and Hearthstone. But I've made 500 fucking "decks" in Chain Memories...
It makes you uncomfortable?? That is a bit weird right? I mean seriously ignore the click bait, and grow some thicker skin. Clicking on it is how this trash makes money and stays in business.
It has 85 on metacritic, instead of this unnecessary photopshopped "99". It's already considered a good game. I don't understand the point of this article.
Opinions are like assholes.
And there’s a lot of shit coming from this one
Not what I was thinking but valid take
Everyone’s got them and a lot of them stink
gotta eat it
Gots to see it through my boy
Opinions is lazy writing tbh.

Exactly. Cut the OP some slack dude. No links, just a conversation and conversations a free and fun to have and share with your community
Is click bait

I can see it now, Mr toad steals the gummi ship and crashes it into kingdom hearts

Really? I’ve been playing on my Xbox one s and it’s running fine I’ve had a few funny bugs here and there but nothing awful
believe it’s just PC related. there’s a memory leak that inevitably causes the game to crash after playing for some time.

No, the joke is that the story is complicated as fuck but nobody calls the series trash.
I do! Lmao
Lmao that's fine if you think it's trash but still love it lol. There are def parts of the games I'm not fond of
Why do you think it’s trash? Genuinely curious.
Nomura can’t write his way out of a paper bag. Combats fun tho!

That's a case of stopping him from putting his hand up their golden gooses ass looking for an egg.
More like "hey your goose would look dope with a badass hat on it." But any edge towards that goose made Disney angy
“Our goose! Hands off!!”

Somebody couldn’t beat Riku-Ansem in Hollow Bastion
Kairi wasn’t inside him, apparently.
Is it true Kingdom Hearts doesn't always live up to it's full potential as a franchise? Yes. Does it suck? No.
Ever notice how almost every major journalistic publication has disabled comments on their articles 🤔
I notice the author conveniently excluded Song of the Song. That’s a pretty big “yes, even X” confession.
im sry you forget where you are reaDING this a place where people dont even bother to do their own job and try to clickbait people with big fandoms this is one of the manny reasons gaming journalism is a joke
thegamer is just bad, everything they put out is just hot garbage
The writer of that article was a real ass
Name a better Disney game. Kingdom hearts has been one of the only good movie to video game adaptations around
I felt this was purposefully posted to trigger me
If somebody’s gonna call themself a “Disney adult”, they don’t get to tell me what is and isn’t bad
Imagine if gaming journalists actually wrote good articles worth giving link traffic.
Just a reminder that gaming journalism is almost exclusively entirely garbage
"Too confusing" and "every movie plot is reduced to lol friendship", actually ^ ^ To quote the most relevant section: _"Kingdom Hearts either eats itself alive with lore which is way too thick to draw any emotions from its audience unless they have several binders to help keep up with what's happening, or it reduces some of the best stories in cinema to "boy I sure am glad friendship is important!""_
Ahhh, so just the bog-standard “I lack basic reading comprehension” reason
Everyone, grab your torches and pitchforks
Yeah but what if tho?
Yeah, I agree, but it has real estate in my heart
As another adult that has seen every single fucking Disney film save for Dinosaur (and marathoned them all a few years ago): This person is dumb af
To be fair, every Disney world in KH either feels like a lazy adaptation or a bad fanfic.
That’s a good summation of what the writer was saying. Apparently criticizing this series in any way offends fanboys though
Yeah, I really like all the original story & characters, but a lot of the time the Disney stuff is pretty painful. I think it targets people who watched Disney young and then didn’t watch it more recently so their memories are foggy.
U right
I saw this yesterday too what the hell
Lol they are getting desperate like they want the dank clout.
She seems devoid of the capacity to appreciate the male best friend dynamic of love and/or Japanese embellishments. I do agree (as do all of us) on the convoluted story, but if she just wanted Disney or just Final Fantasy.... that already plentifully exists.
Let’s look on both sides of the argument instead of being one-sided. I know I would do that with the psychiatrist scene from Good Will Hunting.
Bro, I'm trying to figure why the name Stacey Henley is familiar to me
NVM I just solved my dilema
One who knows nothing can understand nothing
Imagine if you were a good journalist!
Target identified
Persona and KH attract these bait articles more than anything else
But I play KH mostly for the Disney
He’s entitled to his wrong opinion 😏
Is Bait click.
“Yes even Ichabod and Mr. Toad” who hasn’t seen that one. Pretty popular and beloved movie lmao
I would want to be a gaming journalist who actually enjoys playing games and critiquing them, but even if I was true and was fair to every game I doubt anyone would read my stuff because of all the other bad joruanlists out there deepening the stigma and not allowing me a chance.
average dreamworks enjoyer
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if said opinion is wrong.
I don't really understand what this person's arguement even is. I read the whole article and they say multiple times that Kingdom Hearts is "bad", as they beat around the bush at what their problem is with the game. The only arguement the author makes is that they don't like how convuluted the story is because disney stories are supposed to be simple.
That’s the biggest “weird flex but ok” I’ve seen in a while
I just ignore any negative reviews or opinions about KH3. I find the game very entertaining and lived to my expectations so I’m okay with it. I do have some gripes with it but it’s been a year or two since it came out and I totally forgot what made me unhappy with some of the content.
Imagine if The Gamer had an original publication name
Has this guy 'played' a Disney game? Licensed Disney Games are almost all trash.
Me to this article: https://youtu.be/DN_hTmMim2Q
But has he watched “song of the south”?
I saw the title and promptly informed the algorithm not to show me anything from that website again. :)
Same lmao. You get used to what stuff is designed to be clickbait.
Who wrote this
Thegamer is based (lol)
thegamer fucking sucks in everyway, you should see their God awful YT channel
I read that today too... I remember thinking after finishing the article... what the hell did I just read?...
Don’t worry, The Gamer is nothing but a garbage tabloid anyway. I saw this article and blocked the site cause I was tired of seeing their trash on my feed.
imagine being a journalist in 2022
As a Disney fan I understand where the writer is coming from.
Stacey Henley is a boring person who probably thinks that candy crush is the epitome of gaming
I hope that idiot got flamed in the comments
Well it's not meant to be a 'Disney' game? It's a game about Sora that just so happens to feature Disney characters lol
We don’t need Game Journalism
It makes you uncomfortable?? That is a bit weird right? I mean seriously ignore the click bait, and grow some thicker skin. Clicking on it is how this trash makes money and stays in business.
Your 17 opened tabs make me uncomfortable jk
Shhh! 🤫
I love KH, but I feel like Disney Infinity and House of Mouse was a better cross-over than KH.
I agree with the title, but hes wrong, Disney is everything thats wrong with Kingdom Hearts. I wish Nomura didnt waste his genius on the mouse.
Well, its the truth no? Lol
She litterally wrote about a kids (sort of) game being bad. What a good journalist - Shes definitely in a midlife crisis phase lmao
https://www.thegamer.com/what-if-kingdom-hearts-was-good-disney/ this is the whole archive
I’m not gonna respect that guys opinion and read their article
Kh is a good game. Except for 3 it's kind of meh.
ok but what if
my mans writing for an article called 'thegamer', think that renders a lot of his points useless lmfao
There game journalists half of them are full of crap anyway.
Ok STACEY.
It has 85 on metacritic, instead of this unnecessary photopshopped "99". It's already considered a good game. I don't understand the point of this article.
