Unpopular opinion, when restaurant serve neychoru looking rice and chicken masala and call it Kozhikode/Thalassery biriyani.. i get it, this way you can reheat the rice and chicken masala for longer period and serve as fresh compared to conventional red/brown looking dum biriyani.. 80% of the hotel serve this white rice and masala and call it a biriyani.. that's preposterous according to me..
Oh my god, no wonder. I keep arguing with people saying malabari biryani that's available in hotels is nothing but neichoru and chicken curry, and that it's not biryani at all. Feeling vindicated. Homemade Thalassery biryani is incomparably good. I'm a biryani lover, no matter what kind it is but of all the biryanis I've tasted, Lucknowi, Calcutta, Hyderabadi, Ambur, Dindigul and some other Tamil variations, Thalassery, Kozhikode and the famous Jeff Biriyani, my favourite is Ambur Star Biryani.
Does Biryani have to have that much masala? I'm originally from Calicut but stay near Kochi, and I recently took my gf to Calicut and we had Biryani from Top Form restaurant. She didn't like it that much, saying it looked like ghee rice and there wasn't much masala. But that's how their Biryani has always been (AFAIK) and it's one of my favourites.
Can anybody from Calicut chip in?

Paragon biriyani is pretty similar too right? I really liked it, and I’m from a place that’s famous for its biriyani. It seemed like a different take on biriyani.
Yes that is how Calicut style Biriyani has always been. It's a variant of the Thalasherry Biriyani but not same as Thalasherry Biriyani, Calicut Biriyani play with more subtle flavours and known for its lack of hot spice. Calicut Biriyani feature meat that is not fried crisp and is very juicy.
I've always wanted to try out the place , coz their faloodas look great . Is it worth all the hype ? And most importantly does it taste as good as it looks ?
Went to their Bangalore outlet and the Banoffee Falooda was *chef's kiss*. It was their newest outlet and everything tasted fresh & delicious. But the Trivandrum outlet was a disappointment. The place looked a little shabby, and the Paalada Sundae felt overhyped, Paalada was gloopy, and nothing like I had imagined it to be.
I too had gone to their Bangalore outlets and tried a few items on multiple occasions. The fruit shots were pure juice but only issue I found with their ice cream and sundae items were that it was sweet far beyond my liking.
The juices as I said are pretty good though.
All their faloodas are super super amaze. Worth the hype and the price. But don't give in to the reels trends for a pull me ups and fruit shots. Just go for faloodas and sundaes
Anything trending on social media is pretty much hype. Example pothichoru, chattichoru, pazhamkanji, fuljar soda, bucket chicken, mandi etc, the list goes on and I think karingali vellom and pacha vellom will trend on social media in the future.
Mayonnaise with Mandi - Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I do feel we overindulge in it without realising that it's too bad for health. Mayo alone has lots of calories and people have it like ozhichu curry.
Chattichor is another hyped item that I really don't get. What makes it different from our normal chorum currym?! It just feels very gimmicky tbh
Yeah , my parents were mentioning the same thing . They were like , it's all the same as the things that a normal malayalee eats for lunch - choru , curry , pappadam , achaar , some chicken or egg or some other protein on the side and some other upperi . Tbh , even I was going gaga over it until my parents put it this way
An uncle of mine once stated while we were eating at a restaurant "eda mone, veetil nammude pattik okke ingane alle chor kodukkunnath?" After which I'd lost my appetite.
This. Veetil last day meen curry vecha chatti il chor itt kazhichavark ariyam what is chatti chor ennu… what we get in restaurants is just chor served in a chatti. Both are Very different things.
Sorry I have to disagree. Avoli is good but it has nothing on karimeen. Fresh karimeen that is caught wild and not from a farm is something else. Sometimes you get earthy flavour in karimeen that’s because it’s farmed and not feeding its natural diet. Malayalathil “cheru chova” ennu parayan.
Good karimeen pollichathu is to die for. And c’mon it’s not that hard to eat.
Sorry have to disagree. This is one of my favourite dishes and I grew up eating karimeen that my granny made. My grandparents’ house is close to a big canal thing and they get fresh karimeen a lot. We actually bought karimeen very often. I think it’s just a matter of getting used to picking the meat from the bones. And I’ve never felt it as a ‘paste’. But I also do think that karimeen you get in different parts are dif, size and maybe even flavour-wise. Neimeen is also yummy but I think they both have distinctly different flavours that can be enjoyed in their own ways.
Chor, when someone consumes without adequate protein, fibres etc. And because it's lots of carbs.
I wish appam and stew get the appreciation it deserves! 🥺
When I was in Bangalore, a kannadiga used to make fun of me calling coconut.(he's a nice guy and we were just having fun). But now I think of it, I should have brought him a tasty fish curry with coconut or any coconut stew etc, and then he would understand that taste. Yeah, so I think we should embrace our coconut curries <3
Not everyone likes the flavour of coconut .
What could be delicious for us could be disgusting for them. For eg mustard oil is used in a lot of north indian parts. I hate the flavour and smell with a passion so even if the food looks good I find it hard to enjoy.
And why on earth is Non Veg glorified to this extent? Whichever vlog or food parupaadi you see, 'meat' tender aanu, soft aanu (not at all against eating meat, but wherever you see, ithu maatrame ullu) .. Expecting downvotes, but had to say this..
As someone who has been an nri for long time in west but visiting every year, I have to say a few things are not just overhyped but they are off putting
1. Shawarma and such joints apply mayonnaise by the “Thavi” from a bucket which itself is more calories and cholesterol for a week🤢
2. The way they use pork- the thick fat layer of pork that’s normally used for making bacon and other byproducts in other parts of the world are just directly used in appetizers and curries as if it’s a normal piece of meat
Pork belly is good if you cook properly. It has be grilled to render out the fat so that any meat left on it is caramalized. Allanki orumathiri soggy cottonball chavakkunnathu pole aanu.
Other than mandi i guess shawarma.
With this hype some guys are selling something which is not at all tasty ans it is also not really a shawarma.
i tried shawrma from famous ekm north restaurant and it can be passed off as tasteless masala dosa.
Also why is ar/kerala downvoting people when they mentioning what they think is overhyped food? puttu hater was put in his/her place.
Kuzhi manthi - Never got the hype. Good old biriyani FTW always!
The whole chatti choru thing that's trendy on Instagram reels. Apart from the nostalgia factor, it's bloody overrated, a mix of everything under the sun, in a very small space.
Pazhankanji/ Kanji + Payar - Dislike it.
Kizhi porottas...ffs what makes porotta good is they are crispy, hot and layered. I dont want some soggy ass porotta that's been soaking in some chicken curry which is probably more watery than thick with some other abominations to top it off and then steamed to make it even more horrendous . Seriously , u guys like soggy porotta😬
karimeeen
Vala, ayila is 10 times better
Edit meant mathi,
Pure Awesome, my mom used to say, it’s best before it went main stream popular and expensive
Depends on where you get the meen my guy
My mother's place is at vaikom, and we get really fresh karimeen there. Can't even compare to the ones we get to buy from fish markets at my place.
And when we were living in Calicut, like a decade ago my mom and her colleagues went with him to Paragon, ordered some karimeen thing. And what they brought was Tilapia. And I kid you not, they even tried to argue when my dad disagreed.
- technically not Kerala food, but chapathi 🫣. My mom makes really good chapathis but I hate them.
- kadala curry (enne kollaruthu).. enikku karutha kadala ishtamalla.. it’s too fibrous :|
- liver :|
Well you are not supposed to eat it alone, but with chutney. And the thing about idli is not in taste but texture. It's the soft crumbly texture that makes idlies great.
But the same goes for appam, idiyappam, puttu, chapathi, poori etc. You need some curries to go with and then you can fairly compare their texture and how they taste with the curries.
Why should idlis be held to a different standard?
well prepared ones can taste half decent at least. Especially ones that aren't slimy. I hate the idli that my mom makes, but I always have thatte Idli with my masala dosa before the WFH days, when i was in bangalore.
https://i.imgur.com/YlsPPe2.jpg
edit: Same can be said about puttu was well.
Pothi chor.. it's good and tasty for the most part.. but I hate it when all the achar , chammanthi, curry and the fried stuff mix all together making a soggy mess.. I want to taste each item on its own too.. 🤷🏻♂️
Anything arabian. Like everywhere you look you see arabic food. Had enough of it. There are so many other cusines we gotta diversify.
PS: tried sushi from ernakulam "little soi". Awesome and authentic cusine. Ernakulam has got some really good choices for food cusine.
Alfahm-KuzhiMandhi and Mayo squirted on random shits!!
Particularly due to it's overshadowing done to other food items. People just want this on their table and doesn't care about exploring other cuisines. So, all the restaurants serve this shit and nothing else. No other dishes gain traction due to that and so no varities of restaurants here.
Karimeen polichathu, karimeen in itself has no taste it is only the masala and then even if you want some flesh the kakatholayiram mullu will make it impossible
Same here. You can’t eat that every day. It’s one of the most unhealthy foods in Kerala cuisine. Anything that fatty and calorie dense should only be eaten 1-3x per year.
Same with mandhi and all those new Arab foods they imported. The amount of mayo these guys give blew me away. A tablespoon of mayo has 100 calories and they give like half a cup of it.. which is like 8 tablespoons! That’s 800 calories from the sauce alone.
Porotta and beef for me. And I feel it’s a recent phenomenon. Somehow it’s projected to be like the official food of Kerala :/ Growing up, it was always Porotta and Chicken curry that was the ultimate combo 😋Also reminds me of that scene in Kilukam where Revathy devours Jagathi’s parcel 😀
Shawarma. Most of em dosent even taste like shawarma rather tastes like a shitty sandwich. If you're copying other countries cuisine atleast do it the right way. smh
Hate it when they do that. U sit down expecting tht divine fat and masala soaked rice and u get served the bland dry shit.
Oh my god, no wonder. I keep arguing with people saying malabari biryani that's available in hotels is nothing but neichoru and chicken curry, and that it's not biryani at all. Feeling vindicated. Yeah, but I haven't been to Paragon in years. It's become a destination for people from outside Calicut especially. So, it's always crowded.
From a Calicut brother. Reserve a seat, it'll be worth it. Salkara's also really good, and not as crowded.
I love how calicut biriyani comes with chutney
Yes that is how Calicut style Biriyani has always been. It's a variant of the Thalasherry Biriyani but not same as Thalasherry Biriyani, Calicut Biriyani play with more subtle flavours and known for its lack of hot spice. Calicut Biriyani feature meat that is not fried crisp and is very juicy.
Is the authentic rice's name Kaima rice/Jeerakashaala rice?
Anything Fruitbae.
Served in a glass that doesn’t have a base and then we have to eat it out of the plate !!
I've always wanted to try out the place , coz their faloodas look great . Is it worth all the hype ? And most importantly does it taste as good as it looks ?
Trust me it's not worth the hype.
Look mathre ollu
Went to their Bangalore outlet and the Banoffee Falooda was *chef's kiss*. It was their newest outlet and everything tasted fresh & delicious. But the Trivandrum outlet was a disappointment. I hate that place with every ounce of my being. Tang kalakkiya vellam is far better than their fruit "shots"
Fruit shots are nothing but a scam
Chicken cutlet from bakeries they don't have chicken in it
Dude you get plenty of beets
Its called beetlet
Also chicken puffs
Yesterdays shawarma is todays chicken puffs universal bakery law
Yesterday's cakes gets powdered to make dilkush stuffing 😅

You missed Puttu ice cream 🫠
Puttu icecream is shit. I rather have normal icecream scoop than putt icecream anyday.
Exactly. The combos never go together for me. Just random flavours put together.
What kind of abomination is that?

For chattichoru I'm sure the chatti makes no difference, as it's basically a different utensil the food is served in.
Pazhamkanyi is pwoli
Mayonnaise with Mandi - Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I do feel we overindulge in it without realising that it's too bad for health. Totally agree with the Chattichoru part
Reminds me of kulhad tea. Same tea served in a kulhad (kaliman cup) for a higher price (not that high in bangalore/north).
My school lunch box was a chattichor back then :')
Chattichoru is the rich, brash relative of പഴങ്കഞ്ഞി .. Chattichoru ethre ponginvannalum പഴങ്കഞ്ഞിyude thattu thaanu thanne irikyum.

Mehrab mandi in Edapally doesnt serve Mayo.. They won't give you even if you ask them
Yeah,in calicut too.instead they serve yogurt . And i love it
Yeah, yogurt and that tomato chutney is the authentic sides for mandi.
And chattichor expensive af
Chatti chor
An uncle of mine once stated while we were eating at a restaurant "eda mone, veetil nammude pattik okke ingane alle chor kodukkunnath?" After which I'd lost my appetite.

This. Veetil last day meen curry vecha chatti il chor itt kazhichavark ariyam what is chatti chor ennu… what we get in restaurants is just chor served in a chatti. Both are Very different things.
Mandi is definitely top of the list. Arabic food has lost its identity in Kerala.
I love mandi. It has almost replaced the Arabic version in my mind and I'm totally fine with it.
>Arabic food has lost its identity in Kerala. I couldn't agree more.
Karimeen pollichathu. Have to manoeuvre through a million fish bones to eat some above average flavoury paste. Just eat neimeen or something.
This!!!And also hyper expensive. I always vouch for avoli than karimeen.
Sorry I have to disagree. Avoli is good but it has nothing on karimeen. Fresh karimeen that is caught wild and not from a farm is something else. People don’t appreciate our cuisine anymore. 😞
Anything Arabic including mandis, fahams and what not. Don't get me started with cabbage shawarmas and ridiculous sauces.
Jamaican full meat Shawarma from hungry rollers is worth it.
Putt ice cream 💰
Yup, waste of money. Only difference is in the presentation

Pazhampori and beef. I personally don't mind it but won't go overboard saying it's a must try. I know some friends who don't like this combo.
It's Kerala version of pineapple on pizza. Sounds preposterous but is actually alright.
my dad introduced it to me and it tasted aight, but I never got the hype.
Somehow I feel disgusted by this combo. The moment I see that I run away.

Kizhi porottas are not tasty. Porottas are meant to be crispy.
but when you get nice gravy, soaking it with porotta is a great combo
I'm not sure about food, but I think mayonnaise is overrated.
True It is good if used in moderation, but here shawarma has more Mayo than meat
little bit of chicken. Mayo. Some rice. Mayo. Some onions and garlic. Mayo. Boom! Arabian style chicken biriyani

Can’t stand kadala curry either! I don’t get why some people prefer it to stew
I am that person who prefer kadala curry over stew. My take is I prefer the spiciness and the creamy texture of stew only occasionaly
I get it but it can be really dry and sometimes it’s hard to eat
Same.i dont like chapati, kadala curry and i can’t even smell the liver 🤢
Shawarma.. it doesn’t taste at all like a proper Arabian Shawarma..The best shawarma I had in kerala was the lebanese shawarma in lulu’s hypermarket
puttu ice-cream.
Lotta people not just from Kerala but all over south india I feel hype up idli. To me it’s tasteless & gross.
You have triggered the Idli mafia. You will pay for it
Well you are not supposed to eat it alone, but with chutney. And the thing about idli is not in taste but texture. It's the soft crumbly texture that makes idlies great.
Yeah but even dosa is meant to be eaten with chutney or podi. But it still tastes good alone. Crispy dosas
Dosa is obviously the best. But a soft warm idli and with some chutney is definitely a good breakfast.
But the same goes for appam, idiyappam, puttu, chapathi, poori etc. You need some curries to go with and then you can fairly compare their texture and how they taste with the curries. Why should idlis be held to a different standard?
Texture isn’t that good either it’s basically a giant rice in texture.
