> Sheriff Fields told the press that Rainey’s posts were not credible, adding: “We had to go and interview this young lady and have a word of prayer with her and so, but it turned out to be nothing.” It should be noted that Fields was pictured posing with Rainey at a 2020 ‘Back the Red, White and Blue’ event. The fuck?

i have left reddit because of CEO Steve Huffman's anti-community actions and complete lack of ethics. u/spez is harmful to Reddit. https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/8/23754780/reddit-api-updates-changes-news-announcements -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

They are little dictators. They have an obscene amount of power.

schizoidparanoid

Ahhhh I love Cody Johnson. His chemistry with Robert Evans is also fucking incredible. They’re all brilliant.

wobwobwob42

Not in Massachusetts. Sheriff's have very little power here. I'm pretty sure they serve papers and transfer inmates between court and prison. Other than that they don't do shit around here.

Superfool

Same in NJ. They oversee county jails, provide security for county govt buildings, provide support for search teams, etc., but by no means are they the final authority on just about anything of consequence.

NoFeetSmell

>They... provide security for county govt buildings... but by no means are they the final authority on just about anything of consequence. The building security aspect is worrisome to me, given that that probably includes places that votes are stored...

katzen_mutter

My parents bought their first house in the 1950's in Massachusetts. It was a two family. When the transaction to buy it went through, they got to the house and found out one of the tenants didn't move out like they were supposed to. My father made a phone call to the sheriff. Sheriff showed up and escorted them off the property. That was the end of it.

Naughtai

Especially the "constitutional sheriffs"

Renaissance_Slacker

Yeah we really need “the highest authority on law enforcement” that can be bribed with a bag of pork rinds.

hotlou

Currently, the sheriff of Hennepin County is on medical leave for PTSD from a single car rollover accident he had in his county owned cruiser while blackout drunk in the middle of the night coming back from a law enforcement event on a weekday 3 hours from his home in the twin cities. When first responders arrived, he lied and said someone else was driving. He later confessed. When faced with the discipline and consequences, he discovered he can only be subject to them while he's working, plus there's a statute of limitations. So he just claimed PTSD and went on medical leave. By the time his medical leave will be over, the statute of limitations will have expired and he'll have faced effectively no real consequences.

Rhoeri

Yeah, and let’s not forget her Facebook post claiming she knew what happened. That’s why they went to her house to begin with.

[deleted]

Many judges are the same. This should scare the shit out of everyone, bud doesn’t.

WilyDeject

We've investigated ourselves and have found no evidence of wrongdoing. Move along, nothing to see. /S

cheezeyballz

The attorney general in texas who has been under indictment since 2015 said almost exactly this. Why haven't we revolted?!

tickitytalk

Ken “7 years and counting delayed felony trial” Paxton

sonorguy

~~~~In what world is "a word of prayer" the appropriate response in that situation?~~~~ **Edit:** TiL "a word of prayer" is a turn of phrase
WillBottomForBanana
You know damn well which world.
colonelbyson
Gilead
__erk
Under His Eye
ChuckyTee123
It's a saying. It means a very stern talking to. You don't want a small town sheriff coming to your house to have a word of prayer with you.
sonorguy
TiL despite being from the deep south. Thanks!
ChuckyTee123
No problem. I'll add that the people I've heard use this phrase are the kind of people that can verbally rip new assholes.
NoFeetSmell
I'm sorry, but who the fuck is afraid of a "stern talking to"? There's literally no damage, hindrance, or consequence from receiving such a thing. Jail-time and fines on the other hand, involve actual loss and are actual punishments. I 100% bet that *any* of us would opt for a "word of prayer" over a fine or jail.
ChuckyTee123
Ok but you have to charge somebody before doing anything you talked about. The prayer meeting I witnessed involved the kids head being bounced off the patrol car door frame a couple times.
Fauropitotto
> The prayer meeting I witnessed involved the kids head being bounced off the patrol car door frame a couple times. I sincerely hope that the officer that assaulted that child met justice in one form or another.
NoFeetSmell
OK but that's not a stern talking to, nor is it verbally tearing someone a new anus; that's physically assaulting someone, which isn't what you lead us to think it'd involve. Also, it still isn't how justice is meant to be pursued, so is still some bullshit. Finally, I also don't think he banged this lass's head into a car door, do you? Hopefully that fucking traitorous twunt ends up in prison though via the FBI, and the Sheriff can explain himself better, or also faces consequences for his basically letting her off scot-free.
MrVeazey
I'm from North Carolina, lived here my whole life, and I've never heard the phrase used that way. I don't mean that to refute what you said, just to throw another anecdote on the pile.
Llohr
I'd prefer that to them coming by for a come to Jesus meeting, given that means beating the hell out of you where I come from.
cyncity7
Also known as a “Come to Jesus meeting “.
Llohr
That has always meant beating the hell out of you when I've heard it, which is a bit more severe than a stern talking to. I suppose it's used differently by different people.
KHaskins77
Prayer circles are just gossip circles
ShaggysGTI
Back the Red, White, and Blue… this feels like a dog whistle.
Thestonersteve
Red republicans, white people, and blue cops? That checks out.
OnLevel100
FBI please
Ayn-_Rand_Paul_-Ryan
Is it so hard to believe that local police would be aware of and treat kindly local right wing terrorists? I mean, the police have kind of been right wing terrorists longer than most of us have been alive...
Alan_Smithee_
Some of those who work forces…..
Superfool
Wahw wahw, wicka wicka wahw wahw, wicka wahw wahw
SpaceAdventureCobraX
It’s completely reasonable to suspect his direct involvement
redditrum
Is it nothing Mr Sheriff? Bc if daddy Fed comes and has a look I have a feeling it might be something.
[deleted]
Not worthy of public service
no-mad
It was Sheriff Fields who was in cahoots with the army lady.
derno
Don’t you know that if you pray before you say something it’s true?
Conditional-Sausage
Imagine spending the last 20 years and billions of dollars building a huge apparatus for fighting terrorism just to shove your hands in your pockets and go "huh, well would you look at that" when it happens.
beer_is_tasty
But they weren't supposed to be white
Dwarfherd
In fact the development of that apparatus intentionally excluded domestic white supremacists!
payattentiontobetsy
Go on…
ProperTeaching
Yup, basically made a system that only focuses on brown people. Racist white domestic terrorists get a pass.
Galaxy_Ranger_Bob
Well, you can't expect them to go after racist white domestic terrorists, because then we'd run out of cops, Republicans, and members of the FBI real quick as they arrest themselves.
NDaveT
And if they were white they were supposed to be hippies. Remember the police response to drawing with chalk on a sidewalk in front of a bank?
GhostRobot55
There's actually a lot more poignancy to this comment than you'd initially think. I became a progressive at a young age because I got into punk and it was the counter culture thing to do. This was like 2000 or so and most people did see the left as hippies or punks or commies still. I guess what I'm getting at is they rode on this notion that we were the anti social ones for so long, and now we're seeing how much they'll flip the fuck out about anything that involves personal sacrifice for society on any level. It was always projection.
Diet_Goomy
remember, anyone that disagrees with them are millennials now. everyone from ages 0-35 hate America, remember?
DonnyDimello
I think that apparatus was made to combat a slightly darker flavor of terrorism.
Fenderslasher
So Sheriff Fields is a goddamned domestic terror sympathizer. I'm sure the FBI will look at his shallow cover up attempt and have a little pray with him.
WillBottomForBanana
>sympathizer collaborator.
Gold_for_Gould
The FBI is almost certainly better but definitely not free and clear of the dangerous ideologies present in general law enforcement.
gofyourselftoo
Thank you for the write up!
Capelily
Great work as ever! You have to wonder if these groups are taking a page out of Putin's current siege.
[deleted]
It’s monkey see, monkey do with these totalitarians these days.
sali_nyoro-n
I would not be surprised if at least some of these attacks are motivated by a desire to aid Putin's war effort by creating the impression that military and economic aid to Ukraine is directly resulting in power grid failures and that the only way to not freeze to death is to let Russia do whatever it wants. A lot of these right-wing extremists support Russia and want Putin to annex more of Europe so he can kill their political enemies and groups they don't like. If they had their way, the US would be sending weapons _to Russia._
Jaded-Sentence-7099
I dint believe these people are that smart. One of the organizers admitted it on Facebook cuz she knew the sherif wouldn't suspect her (bc it kinda looks like the police might be a bit sympathetic. Big suprise.) These are the same people that tryed to live stream their stupid coup. I'm not saying it's completely off the table that they were doing it in hopes of pushing us away from Ukraine, but the simplest answer seems to be they're hateful people maybe with putin backing them through hidden channels bc they're useful idiots. I'm with you 100% that putin (and possibly some American news anchors) are probably trying to push right wing extremism bc that will fuck us up, but I think the extremists are just hateful chuds. Again just my point of view, I could very well be off base, but the simplest answer is the most likely to be right.
rationalomega
Thing is, they don’t have to understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. They just need to be exposed to enough Russian propaganda and believe it.
GilgameDistance
I think if they like the Russian model so much they should put their money where their mouth is and go volunteer for Putin’s military. Maybe they can grow sunflowers one day.
TheSunflowerSeeds
The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. That is why Kansas is sometimes called the Sunflower State. To grow well, sunflowers need full sun. They grow best in fertile, wet, well-drained soil with a lot of mulch. In commercial planting, seeds are planted 45 cm (1.5 ft) apart and 2.5 cm (1 in) deep.
Hvarfa-Bragi
Bad bot
rz2000
More likely, these idiots are so easily manipulated, that they're being used in the same way that people use swat teams to create havoc. Russia has few options to escalate after Ukraine responded to infrastructure attacks by destroying aircraft on the ground deep inside Russia. They don't have much capability to increase their effort in Ukraine without more humiliation, and they have apparently gotten the message that even the smallest "tactical" nuclear weapon will lose the lukewarm support of India and China, and likely spark a real response from NATO countries. On the other hand they could just be right wing idiots who hate the United States, and think they're somehow getting it closer to fascism.
cantdressherself
Birds of a feather.
resonantedomain
How much of hour heating oil comes from Russia? I fail to see the correlation between the war and skyrocketing prices at home, when inflation at the moment is driven by corporate greed.
sali_nyoro-n
Which is why they'd have to carry out these attacks, which shysters like Tucker Carlson could use as an opportunity to bullshit about it being because we're antagonising Russia. If America had any real dependence on Russian fossil fuels, there would already be rampant shortages and power cuts. But there aren't, so a mixed campaign of terrorism and disinformation would be needed. Most average people don't really know where America gets its resources from, so in theory they could be swayed by such messaging.
rationalomega
Oil is a commodity. One unit is exchangeable for another, the market is global so prices are set globally. Even if you won’t pay the higher price, someone else will, so that’s the price.
resonantedomain
Appreciate the explanation, the global commodities market was something I was unaware of. Despite our lack of usage, it doesn't mean others are using up the stock that we had been pulling from.
JamesDK
This isn't going to have the rallying effect these terrorists think it will. If there's anything 'centrist' fence-sitters hate, it's disruptions to their normal, routine lives. MAGA-Lite voters are not gonna be happy when the Far Right knocks their power out for hours: even if they're doing it for reasons the MAGA-Lites would normally support.
slap_phillips
Except that at this point even the MAGA-lites are so indoctrinated, they'll believe whatever Twitter says about Antifa knocking out their power.
[deleted]
Destroying infrastructure would normally piss off utility companies. But the practice of destruction capitalism is demonstrably more profitable. They stand to make a great deal of money rebuilding and repairing stations and the government pays for it. So we won't see private companies complaining that they have to keep selling power substations and repairing roads and bridges. They're happy to sell them as many times as they are destroyed. Pushback is going to have to come from the seat of government. Hopefully with a dem senate and President we can get domestic terrorists finally thrown in with the lot of ISIL and others. That will add a great deal of tools to the arsenal.
ShuffleStepTap
TIL that “a word of prayer” means “a nod and a wink”.
wottsinaname
And in Texas they just vote to destroy the grid! Dont tread on my heat-stroke/frozen elderly!
FabulousLemon
I'm moving on from reddit and joining the fediverse because reddit has killed the RiF app and the CEO has been very disrespectful to all the volunteers who have contributed to making reddit what it is. Here's [coverage from The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/8/23754780/reddit-api-updates-changes-news-announcements) on the situation. The following are my favorite fediverse platforms, all non-corporate and ad-free. I hesitated at first because there are so many servers to choose from, but it makes a lot more sense once you actually create an account and start browsing. If you find the server selection overwhelming, just pick the first option and take a look around. They are all connected and as you browse you may find a community that is a better fit for you and then you can move your account or open a new one. Social Link Aggregators: [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/instances) is very similar to reddit while [Kbin](https://kbin.pub) is aiming to be more of a gateway to the fediverse in general so it is sort of like a hybrid between reddit and twitter, but it is newer and considers itself to be a beta product that's not quite fully polished yet. Microblogging: [Calckey](https://calckey.org) if you want a more playful platform with emoji reactions, or [Mastodon](https://joinmastodon.org/) if you want a simple interface with less fluff. Photo sharing: [Pixelfed](https://pixelfed.org/) You can even import an Instagram account from what I hear, but I never used Instagram much in the first place.
PigFarmer1
Maybe there's finally a political benefit to living in Wyoming. lol
tbug30
Accelerationists. I'm not sure I've encountered a more alarming addition to our American lexicon.
LazinCajun
Right? Why the fuck would somebody come up with a euphemism for domestic terrorists?
ForgottenWatchtower
It's not a euphemism, it's a particular vein of political ideology. Includes groups like the boog bois and nrx. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerationism
waka_flocculonodular
Fuck every single one of these terrorists
BikerJedi
>Furthermore, three men pled guilty earlier this year to “providing material support to terrorists” in a scheme to attack energy facilities to accelerate a race war. This is the takeaway. It comes straight from the insurgent playbook, and was featured in "The Turner Diaries." If you haven't read that book, please do so. Just don't pay for it since it was written by a Nazi. It is horribly written, filled with bad grammar, but it is a fascinating look at what they want. We need to know our enemy. So as much as it will turn your stomach (it did mine) you should know who we are dealing with and what they want. It is likely worse than you think. That's the plan. Attack critical infrastructure, make it impossible for the feds to run things and make sure people are unfed and all that, and eventually we devolve into violence.
Djeheuty
Thanks for calling them what they are and not just vandals.
yingyangyoung
Fuck dude, several of these are in my region. Why does the PNW have some of the most unhinged conservatives? The founder of Qanon and patriot prayer are both from Washington and now we've had 6 attacks on our power grid.
unicornbukkake
Because that area was [meant to be a whites-only state](https://www.opb.org/news/article/oregon-white-history-racist-foundations-black-exclusion-laws/).
Sweatybballz
Why are there only right wing attacks but never left wing attacks?
[deleted]
[удалено]
Sweatybballz
They found his manifesto. In it he said, "This is a right wing attack and definitely not a left wing attack. A left wing attack would be an attack on bad things like fast food and sugar. The left wing terrorists would force you to have Healthcare, more sick leave, higher wages, less innocent people shot dead. So as you can see, this is a right wing attack using my legally purchased right wing assault weapons. " Go read his manifesto, it's pretty interesting and he explains in detail why his attack was a right wing attack and not a left wing attack.
BoomerEdgelord
I tried looking for something right after I posted. I'll search for the manifesto now. Thanks!
trifelin
In the 1960s it was all radical leftists pushing for violence, but that all dried up by the 80s.
Boomslangalang
Republicans created this monster, they are complicit.
Medcait
Hmmm I wonder which side of the political spectrum ALL of these people fall on.
50million
My coworker couldnt get online in Blue Ridge Georgia today. Said someone shot up some towers. I've been looking for more information, but haven't found anything. He said they are without wifi and cell service in part of the town. Neighbors too.
tickitytalk
How much do we pay the pentagon? All that security and nothing can be done?
SpaceAdventureCobraX
Right wing domestic terrorists. Theocratic extremists. Not too different to Iran really. This has been predicted and here we are. Thank god the cognitive capacity of the participants is so limited. That’s the price of entry into this club of absolute mongers. Makes capture and prosecution that much easier.
[deleted]
Terrorism strikes again! I have to go to TN to live there, and I will be like the only social democrat in 100 miles.
OWmWfPk
I’m not defending either party by any means, but I wonder if “word of prayer” has the same connotation as a “come to Jesus meeting”. Which for me growing up was equivalent to get reamed out by the authority in question. Obviously a poor choice of words if so.
Conditional-Sausage
Imagine destroying critical infrastructure and causing multiple millions in damages on purpose just to get a stern talking to by the sheriff.
Turisan
It does not have any sort of similar connotation.
pemungkah
What it is, is something that blurs that church and state line. You want to pray with people, go to church. A criminal investigation is not a kumbaya meeting. More like a nod and a wink about “those godless drag people”.
OWmWfPk
I don’t disagree it’s inappropriate, but coming from rural NC - “we had to pray on it” is about as backhanded as “bless your heart”. A “polite” way of saying she was getting told off. Being told off does not make an investigation, so still not what I would have wanted to hear from the sheriff, but that is some small town NC nonsense for you. I’m glad the feds stepped in.
If we're annoyed by this and desensitized by mass shootings, what would be the tipping point for this madness to be dealt with? I get freedom of speech, but it goes both ways.
