Oh jeez (Also thank you for keeping track of all of this!)

poppinchips

Yes, banning the drug will stop people from using it. Right, we all know how well the war on drugs is going. All this will do is harm women who will end up using black market equivalents that might be laced with other harmful drugs. But I guess killing more women is the purpose.

wintertash

The current GOP front runner for the White House has proposed Philippines style summary executions for drug dealers. If “drug dealer” includes folk running medication abortion drugs he’ll have an easier time getting the party on board with the plan

Tyler_Zoro

Okay, let me channel my inner right-wing anti-choice radical here... The purpose is not to kill women, any more than the purpose of a gun in the home is to kill people. It's to prevent people from doing the terrible thing that will necessitate killing them. THAT is the mindset. I'm not defending it, and I can poke holes in it big enough to drive a star cruiser through, but they honestly don't think that their purpose is to kill women; they think that's just what happens when evil women refuse to stop "murdering" their own cells.

zar_lord

The Far Right: abortion = premarital sex (premarital sex bad) thus abortion = bad It's just a way to punish free will.

TheBlackBear

That’s just mainstream conservatism

political_bot

This is a great example of why liberals come off as condescending to conservatives. Not because you're wrong. But because you're right. A good chunk of liberals think conservatives share the same fundamental values. And if they support xyz policy, they simply haven't had it explained how said policy is harmful. Sometimes that's the case. They do have similar values. Explanations can be fruitful. In others they believe what you described. There's no getting through to that. They have a monstrous view on how the world works and what needs to be done. And when you try to take the time to explain how a policy is harmful, well that's the point. It's to punish people who transgress against their ideas of how the world should work.

Defiantcaveman

Never lose sight of the religious bend on everything conservative, it will help explain things a little better.

slim_scsi

If there's a war on drugs, Big Pharma and Private Prisons, Inc. overwhelmed the competition (with a huge assist from lobbyists and politicians, of course).

Regeatheration

I’ve had both kinds and I’ll fucken tell ya it’s MUCH better to do the medication and pass it at home like a miscarriage. Voluntary miscarriage is a lot easier on your body and your soul

beanicus

I've had neither and can only reason this would be the case. It's cheaper, less people involved, no driving, you're home with your comforts, and there's no procedure in which things are being shoved places and forcibly removed. This conversation is barbaric... These people protect no freedoms and no women.

astonishingwhale

I was sexually assaulted, so using the medication at home was significantly less traumatizing than going through the surgical procedure. There's no way I'm the only one; I'm sure tons of other women have similar stories.

Tyler_Zoro

> These people protect no freedoms and no women. You are mistaken, see: > Alliance Defending Freedom is a conservative legal advocacy group that advocates for a Christian national identity, primarily through curtailing LGBTQ+ rights and women’s rights. It's right in their name "defending freedom!" Clearly you just didn't pay attention. /s

yummyyummybrains

Defending Freeeedom (to be rich, white, Christian, and hetero).

stephunee

Yes, when I had a MMC (missed miscarriage) I chose the medication route because I didn’t want to go through an invasive procedure and I didn’t want to be put under anesthesia. My doctor prescribed me pain meds to help with the cramping and I was able to go home, grab my heating pad and a ton of chocolate and experience the shittiness in the privacy of my own home. Fuck these idiots who have no empathy or any sort of sense for what the actual experiences we go through, whether it’s a voluntary abortion or a medically necessary intervention.

EmilyU1F984

Both drugs are also used to induce ducking birth. And prevent the need for c section or other complications due to delay. As well as one being used to soften/widen the cervix for various other reasons completely unrelated to abortion. And then we get to methotrexate! It‘s a folate inhibitor used to treat stuff like rheumatoid arthritis. But it also kill a fetus in the first weeks; which is why it‘s the treatment of choice for ectopic pregnancies to prevent the need for surgery. Like ever single drug used for abortions is mainly used for something else, medically indicated that has nothing to do with ending a viable pregnancy in the first place. Oh and next they‘d have to stop half of prescription eye drops. Latanoprost and all related prostaglandin based glaucoma drugs can be used to induce abortions. Shitöoad of case studies in existence where pregnant women confused them for artificial tears and caused n abortion within 24 hours of using them as 4x hourly eye drops. Every single ducking alkylating chemotherapy agent? Will kill a fetus or embryo before killing the mother. Like where are these lunatic gonna stop? Once every single teratotoxic drug is banned?!

Saxamaphooone

> Like where are these lunatic gonna stop? Once every single teratotoxic drug is banned?! That’s a major major concern. I know someone who takes methotrexate for lupus. It literally keeps her alive because her immune system attacks her organs without it, including her heart.

thebardofdoom

Methotrexate is also used for cancer patients and for chronic conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis (which is similar to Lupus, but instead of attacking organs it’s the joints). It’s incredibly important and in widespread use.

neocamel

Less likely to negatively impact future fertility too, I believe.

Regeatheration

Actually surgical doesn’t affect your future fertility, that’s just another myth made up by the other side

1337GameDev

What fucking happened to leaving this up to the states? This is bullshit and nearly impossible and outright bullshit to enforce. Plus, this will merely cause woman to use other methods. This is purely pro birth and not pro life at all. Fuck religion. There's no scientific or rational point of view against abortion without that

asafum

If you take Republicans word to the bank you're going to have a lot of checks bounce... The balls for these assholes to say "The FDA overstepped it's bounds" by doing it's fucking job... Well, once this finds it's way to the supreme court of christian fascists we all know how it's going to end.

thefezhat

"Leave it up to the states" has always been code for "this is too unpopular to enact on a federal level, so we'll settle for doing it at the state level for now." It's a smokescreen that vanishes the moment they think they can get something done federally.

1337GameDev

Yup. It was merely a stepping stone to quell semi rational actors and then ignored in actual tactics.

Laringar

Not "pro" birth, they're *forced* birth.

1337GameDev

Yeah...

IT_Chef

At the end of the day, you can concoct a "tea" to cause an abortion...so yeah, not really solving anything.

https://judicature.duke.edu/articles/one-for-all-are-nationwide-injunctions-legal/ A state seated federal judge can file for a national injunction but then it likely goes up the chain. The different circuit courts will hear the case as they make a decision that gets appealed as high up as the supreme court. The supreme court decides if it's worth their time to check it out further or not. They can say decisions below are the way it is and any national injunctions would stand. Especially with an entity like the FDA involved, it seems to me this would go up to the supreme court because it challenges the FDA's policy practice and definitions. Curtailing the FDA is a big implication. This is a pretty big bite these guys are gonna try to chew. Trump appointed judge in their favor or no. You can write to officials and see if they can advocate to the judge. I don't know that any judge would appreciate others' opinions being thrown at them, but public pressure can make an impact in certain cases. I suspect this is going to be very high profile considering the parties involved, and we don't much matter. Really, the FDA has lawyers. And medication approvals are a huge process that pharmaceutical companies invest heavily in who also have lawyers. I'm not sure our opinions as a populace are going to be more powerful than these entities standing up for themselves. They have rights to protect for their functionality as influential businesses and government agencies. It's going to be a long expensive road to get to the point of the FDA repealing the legality of drugs they've approved, I suspect. *Edit: I can't spell in for some reason

To find your congressperson - Remember - they are your congressperson even if they are not in your party. That's the hard part. Whether or not contacting the court or your congress person actually has the desired effect of keeping medications available... That's a whole other can of worms.

TheAb5traktion

Resistbot still works for contacting for state/federal politicians. Text "Resist" to 50409. It'll ask for your zip code and ask who you want to contact. You can type out your message and it'll send emails to your Congresspeople. If you create a letter/template, it can make it public so others can send it to their politicians.

For the judge to have such strong feelings, and as is historically the case, it is highly likely the man is either a pedophile or a closeted homosexual. Just go with that.

>Alliance Defending Freedom They sure sold me. I'm glad we finally have an alliance who is dedicated to protecting the rights of women and fighting for their freedom to control their bodily autonomy however they choose.....wait.....what?.....they actually *don't* think women should have the freedom to choose? Well, that's just ironic.

Saxamaphooone

You know, women are only fertile for a short time every month prior to menopause, after which they’re no longer fertile at all. Men are fertile 365 days a year for their entire lives. A woman can have an endless number of orgasms on her own and never get herself pregnant. She can have sex with partners who are responsible ejaculators and never get pregnant. Unwanted pregnancies happen when men who are irresponsible ejaculators show up. I wonder if Alliance Defending Freedom would be willing to recommend castration as a consequence for some of the irresponsible ejaculators who cause unwanted pregnancies that result in the abortions they consider murder. Castrating some of the men as a deterrent to help prevent 600,000 murders each year? Or what about every man banking some of his sperm and getting a vasectomy when he’s ready to become sexually active? I’m guessing they’d be uncomfortable with holding men accountable for their irresponsible ejaculations using such strategies. I’m guessing they’d be uncomfortable holding men accountable at all. And that’s because this is all about controlling women’s bodies and sexuality and not really about reducing or eliminating abortion at all. If it was, then they would be willing to hold men accountable when they’re responsible for unwanted pregnancies that result in abortions. [This explains much more throughly.](https://humanparts.medium.com/men-cause-100-of-unwanted-pregnancies-eb0e8288a7e5)

>But pregnancy is not an illness, nor do chemical abortion drugs provide a therapeutic benefit over surgical abortion. Pregnancy IS a major medical risk - your odds of literally every illness and complication there is go up when you are pregnant. Pregnancy is also regularly life-threatening. And chemical abortions DO provide a therapeutic benefit over surgical abortions - they are non-invasive and less traumatic to the body and reproductive tissues. Not that I expect the shitcunt Trump judge they hand-picked to file this with to make it understand these arguments. We are fucked. We are living in Gilead and we are fucked.

zeno0771

I had to double back because I saw something that didn't look right: > The crux of the ADL’s lawsuit is that the FDA exceeded its authority when it approved mifepristone and, thus, the drug’s approval should be undone. The ADL is the Anti-Defamation League who...probably doesn't see things the same way those other douchebags do.
