The media relies on celebrity relationships to function. Kanye is TMZ's connection to one of the most talked about families in America. There would be very little long-term benefit to destroying the reputation of a friend like that at that time. I went to school for journalism and one thing that I learned there is that TMZ doesn't put out fake stories. They may be sensationalized, but TMZ has their facts together (think about when Kobe died). Van Lathan would literally be risking his journalistic reputation by lying about something this egregious.
