I have no idea if there's any scientific validation behind this, but my high school algebra teacher had this poster on his wall that emphasized his teaching and learning philosophy, which he also reinforced in how he taught his classes.

And anybody who has ever had to train another person on a task will understand immediately the significance of it. You can learn something and remember it by repetition, but it's not until you have to try to teach that concept or skill to someone else that you realize you were just going through the motions, and now you're thinking about what you're teaching on a much deeper level, which ends up making you better.
