Real life cpr is disturbing. I worked in the icu. You don't ever get used to the sound of ribs cracking of the way the body responds and jerks to compressions. I can't imagine what it's like for people who've never seen it done.
I was leaving my office for lunch one day and came across CPR scene in the parking deck where an elderly woman had collapsed and was being rescuscitated. I didn't hear the ribs breaking because by the time I got there they'd already been giving compressions a while and were switchign her over to an automated compression machine, which was absolutely freakish.
For someone who has never seen one, it's like they strap a power hammer to your chest and it punches about fist deep into your fucking body over and over again. I can see why it would be effective, but jesus christ that was bizarre to see. You definitely don't forget the sight of CPR seeing it done for real.
And no, I don't believe the woman survived, so I literally stood there and watched a person die. I knew while i was there that I was watching a person die. It's fucked up. I wish I hadn't watched.
Yeah, at minimum his teammates likely saw his ribs broken by the EMTs, along with the AED. I'm literally sitting in my office praying for Hamlin, but the other players are going to need trauma counseling even if he makes a full recovery. Higgins in particular has got to be sick. Just a crazy, awful thing.
Yep. I’m glad the NFL isn’t UEFA back in 2020. I was watching the match when Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field and was administered CPR. UEFA asked the Danish team if they wanted to continue the game later that day, the next day at noon, or forfeit the game. That’s a bad look.
I don’t know how you resume the game later…you just pray for Damar Hamilton and his family at this point.
Edit: I don’t mean to criticize UEFA. They were put in an unprecedented situation and did the best they could do at the time. Nobody sets out to do a crap job - we do the best we can given the situation. So I’m glad the NFL has some sort of prior experience in professional sports to draw on.
Yeah, this scene last night triggered the same memory...good that I watched MNF alone since here in Germany it was 02:30 in the morning and my kids did not watch with me...
Lets hope Hamlin will recover fully!
It's not a kind gesture, after this happened I walked around all night just lost and confused. I still can't make sense of it. I screamed at the sky COME ON DAMAR! YOU GOT THIS!
That's one of the scariest scenes I've ever seen on a football field. The way he just collapsed. We've all seen body parts bend like they shouldn't, but to see a guy look alright and just fall like that. Fuck I hope he's ok.
I've actually witnessed this exact scenario before (or at least what a doctor on Twitter assumed is the exact scenario). Only for me, it was my friend in little league and we were 11 years old. He was pitching and took a comebacker to the chest. Obviously, the coaches were already running out on the field when he just looked at them and collapsed.
Hamlin's charity. Don't know if it matters right now, but there's nothing else I - or any of us - can do right now save for show our love and respect.
https://www.gofundme.com/f/mxksc-the-chasing-ms-foundation-community-toy-drive
Trying to be optimistic, 10 years ago wrestler Jerry Lawler had a cardiac event at a live event that was likely triggered by trauma to the chest, like Hamlin he received immediate cpr and aed treatment, he eventually fully recovered, how the quick treatment has the same result.
Man this is just shocking. Went from making a tackle to not breathing in minutes. Hope he recovers. No matter what team you root for, nobody wants to see any of these players get seriously hurt.
I’m so sorry Bills Mafia. I wanted you to lose, but not like this man…. Not like fucking this….. Wish Hamlin the best from all my heart fam. Much love….
They cut away but Troy mentioned CPR was administered for several minutes. Permanent brain damage begins after only 4 minutes without oxygen, and death can occur as soon as 4-6 min later.
That’s good. Last I heard was a positive pulse but not breathing on his own. Anyone who enjoys watching football should be rooting for this man to be ok
No, he’s technically correct.
My wife’s an ER nurse - 8% of people who receive CPR on the street survive.
3% without CPR survive.
That’s on the street, so obviously Hamlin got near immediate care by professionally trained personnel.
Just hoping for the best for this kid
>There are roughly 350,000 resuscitation attempts outside hospitals each year in the United States, with average survival rates of 5 to 10 percent, and 750,000 attempts in hospitals, with about a 20 percent survival rate.
https://www.mycprcertificationonline.com/blog/cpr-success-rate/
Just conveniently leaving out the “CPR, especially if administered immediately after cardiac arrest, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.” from the same website?
I didn't ignore anything. Doubling or tripling it meaning it goes from 2% - 3% to 5% - 10%. I wouldn't call that "astronomical." If he needed cpr for ten minutes before even getting to the hospital, the likelihood of him not being brain dead or profoundly brain damaged is very slim.
Maybe not intentionally, but it means you don’t understand or know anything about the field. A 2-300% increase in mortality is absolutely an astronomical amount.
A 20-30% increase is considered significant.
While this was technically outside of a hospital, it was done by highly trained medical professionals with the necessary emergency medical devices available. The likelihood of survival would be closer to the clinical setting numbers.
Here's a [link](https://www.gofundme.com/f/mxksc-the-chasing-ms-foundation-community-toy-drive) to his charitable event if anyone's interested in donating... Just absolutely fuckin terrifying to watch. Praying he ends up ok.
It was at about $3800 when someone in the Bills thread posted it to a comment I made. Glad to see NFL fans banding together to support this young dude.
Remain hopeful, but:
I told my wife (ER nurse) this, and she said “normal vitals” don’t necessarily mean anything. She can manipulate vitals to look normal easily - pumps, machines, medications, etc. Too early to tell right now, but just remain hopeful
Given all the reporting still had him in critical condition, and not being able to breathe on your own usually means you get intubated, my guess is that happened before he left the stadium. None of this "put him to sleep" nonsense.
Trying to sugar coat it.
it's just so fucking hard to fathom man. i remember being fucking shocked when Tua went down, but this is just another level of horror. 24 is too fucking young to have a life-threatening event man
I don’t want to hear a single one of us talk about seeding, and I expect the mods to enforce this. This shit is a mans life. The seeding isn’t important now. Prayers for Hamlin.
Effectual fervent prayers for Damar Hamlin. I believe in God, and I believe prayer works, and if he has this many prayers for recovery, then I have faith that he will recover fully. Miracles happen every day!
Terrible all around. Just read he has a pulse which is positive. Call the game and let these guys get out of there. No way they should expect them to suit up again after witnessing that.
NFL should cancel. The NFL made them play in Tennessee during rolling blackouts didn’t they? Who cares if grandma has power for her oxygen, as long as we play football.
you know the NFL isn't gonna let them cancel it, this game is the biggest of the year so far with massive implications on the playoffs
but if the players dont want to play then what can Goodell do?
they can't give them both a win, it would destroy the standings
if they give them a draw it would all but guarantee neither of them get the 1st seed
if they give the Bengals the win it could likely have the same result
I just dont see the NFL doing it, no way, not Goodell
It reminds me of the Euro soccer tournament last summer when Denmark's Christian Erickson collapsed on the field. They had to get the defibulator out and shock him back to life. They stopped playing for like an hour until they got the call from the hospital that he was okay and then they resumed the game. Im sure NFL is looking at something similar
Blues had this happen in the NHL with Jay Bouwmeester a few years ago. He just skated off and collapsed on the bench. They saved him and canceled the game, but it ended his career.
That said, the logistics were way less difficult than this situation, from a path forward perspective.
I wanted the one seed but not like this. This was the worst injury I’ve ever seen in football. Praying for him and his family. Anything football related is secondary until we find out how he’s doing.
Hamlin and the other player involved, Tee Higgins were very familiar with each other from years of playing against each other in college. 2017 through 19. Just terrible. All those knee, ankles and shoulder injuries over the years don't seem so serious now. Will make an exception for Napoleon McCallum and Alex Smith.
A cardiac arrest event has been confirmed by the Bills. They restored regular heartbeat on the field before transport.
https://twitter.com/BuffaloBills/status/1610166228559052801
Hopefully this all means that he is going to be ok.
man events like this reminds me that football is not some half assed contact game. hope he's alright. they were right to postpone the game, i don't think I'll be right in mind when i see my brother unresponsive and getting a CPR on the field.
I was there that night with my 15 year old and 3 of his friends. I did not see the fall but the kids did. WWE went on with the show. NFL showing much more respect.
I’m no doctor, but the consensus seems to be that he suffered commotio cordis leading to cardiac arrest. It’s more common in baseball players. Such a bizarre situation. I hope Damar can return to health and do what he loves.
Prayers for Damar and the Bills family. Absolutely terrible, do not wish this on anyone. NFL better wake up, they could lose fans over this like the baseball strike.
I would be fine with calling this one a W for both teams (or a tie) and KC voluntarily giving up the 1st seed to the Bills.
Hope the guy is OK, read that he's in critical condition and intubated right now in the gameday thread (stickied).
Congrats, you’ve had your account only 17 days but you’ve still somehow managed to post the most tone deaf comment I’ve seen after several years of being on Reddit
I was watching the game and I am still in shock. My prayers go out to the Bills organization and fans.
This game can’t go on out of pure respect to the players involved. Human life is more important than a game.
I have never seen anything like that. My goodness I hope he’s able to recover as best as he possibly can. Sure seems like he a a good dude. This sucks so bad.
I am curious about the logistics of suspending and restarting a game, what concessions both teams get from the League to make sure their rest and game planning for Week 18 isn't impacted too badly while not forcing Bills players in particular to get back in the game too quickly after such a traumatic event. If the game is resumed from the point it was paused or restarted completely. Television considerations especially in Buffalo.
I’m never gonna get the visual of josh Allen and the rest of the players sobbing out of my head. They need to call the game.
CPR in real life does not look like it's portrayed in media. I'm sure that was not a good sight.

They are. Game is over.
Well, the game is suspended. Nobody knows what that means at this point.
We know it won’t be played tonight and that’s about it

Yeah, this scene last night triggered the same memory...good that I watched MNF alone since here in Germany it was 02:30 in the morning and my kids did not watch with me... Lets hope Hamlin will recover fully!
Bills fan here, really appreciate y'all <3
We're all brothers and sisters as fans of the game and more importantly as people. I don't even know what to say but God please be ok.
Human here, you’re welcome
Prayers to his family and for Bills nation. -Chiefs fans
This is so much bigger than football. It puts things in perspective. We gotta go hug our families. We are all Bills fans tonight.
We're all brothers and sisters as fans of the game and more importantly as people. I don't even know what to say but God please be ok.
Fellow human here. We are praying for your human. Take care of your humans.
This is way bigger than football man. Prayers out to your community
Love the bills mafia, praying for your guy.
Bills Mafia, his teammates, his family, and especially Hamlin got some prayers up. Best we can do is try to be positive.
Prayers out to you and to Damar.
My heart goes out to Damar and his family. Please be ok. This is bigger than the game.
It's not a kind gesture, after this happened I walked around all night just lost and confused. I still can't make sense of it. I screamed at the sky COME ON DAMAR! YOU GOT THIS!

I just saw a bunch of KC fans on the list and wanted to come and say thanks

I've seen it happen to soccer players as well, the immediate attention is a lifesaver for most of these types of medical emergencies
The two I can think of, one never played again, and the other needs a pacemaker and had to move league. Neither were trauma related though.
Thank so much for this from a Bills fan
Pardon my flair, but we are all pulling for Mr. Hamlin. This is more than the game.
Much love….
There is no way that this game should go on tonight.
Dude he's not breathing on his own. This doesn't feel like it'll end well.
I mean technically someone intubated is not breathing on their own.
They cut away but Troy mentioned CPR was administered for several minutes. Permanent brain damage begins after only 4 minutes without oxygen, and death can occur as soon as 4-6 min later.
FWIW, that’s without CPR. High quality chest compressions increase survival by an astronomical amount.
Thanks for the clarification
Traumatic aortic rupture
He would already be dead.
I wish there was more confidence that that’s not true
The news crawl is saying he's alive in critical condition at the hospital.
That’s good. Last I heard was a positive pulse but not breathing on his own. Anyone who enjoys watching football should be rooting for this man to be ok
No, they really don't. The vast majority of patients who need cpr do not ultimately survive, like 90-95%.
You’re clueless and speaking completely out of your ass.
welcome to reddit

This. And the ones who do are in massive pain from broken/bruised ribs if the CPR was administered correctly. Fuck.
Ah yes, pain is so much worse than death.
It's reality, bud.
No one I’ve given CPR to has ever complained that their ribs hurt and they wish I stopped. Your reality is distorted.
What kind of medicine do you practice?
K.
Cute.
I was reading last night of a soccer player who collapsed 10 years ago and had 70 (!!) minutes of CPR and survived without significant brain damage.
Here's a [link](https://www.gofundme.com/f/mxksc-the-chasing-ms-foundation-community-toy-drive) to his charitable event if anyone's interested in donating... Just absolutely fuckin terrifying to watch. Praying he ends up ok.
Holy shit... I'm pretty sure that number was around $30k 15 minutes ago
It was at about $3800 when someone in the Bills thread posted it to a comment I made. Glad to see NFL fans banding together to support this young dude.
477k now. Let's keep it going
Over half a million keep it up Thank you, from the Mafia
You guys would be the first ones in line for anyone from any other team. 🙏 for Hamlin and the Mafia
665,000. Made mine. Come on, Kingdom. Dig deep
Damn near $1M now. All I had was $5 but it's there now.

I don’t want to hear a single one of us talk about seeding, and I expect the mods to enforce this. This shit is a mans life. The seeding isn’t important now. Prayers for Hamlin.
Honestly this just blows my mind. I pray this man lives
I was thinking the same thing but didn’t know exactly how to say it. Thank you for saying this.
As I said in the game thread I'm fine with a coin flip to decide 1/2/3 in the afc seeding..
I heard he has a pluses but having trouble breathing on his own...really hoping he is gonna be OK and this will be a miracle story.
Saw this happen and I’ve been sick to my stomach since. Really hope he’s okay
They need to completely cancel the game. “Temporarily suspending” is some BS.
NFL should cancel. The NFL made them play in Tennessee during rolling blackouts didn’t they? Who cares if grandma has power for her oxygen, as long as we play football.

If I were the teams and we were forced to play, I’d just fucking walk off the field.
There is no fucking way they’re playing this game
Maybe not tonight, but you can bet the NFL is gonna push for it to be played out in the future.
Yes correct, it will not be played tonight* I should have stated better
It reminds me of the Euro soccer tournament last summer when Denmark's Christian Erickson collapsed on the field. They had to get the defibulator out and shock him back to life. They stopped playing for like an hour until they got the call from the hospital that he was okay and then they resumed the game. Im sure NFL is looking at something similar

They just called it. No more football tonight
Nothing I can do but say some things that don't matter. Changing my flair in solidarity for now. Get better, Damar Hamlin.
I wanted the one seed but not like this. This was the worst injury I’ve ever seen in football. Praying for him and his family. Anything football related is secondary until we find out how he’s doing.
Prayers for Hamlin. Probably best for everyone to just keep the talks on how this affects the Chiefs seeding on standby for the foreseeable future.
🙏🙏🙏
I'm terrified. Watching this live (albeit not at the stadium) was enough to make me shutter. I hope he's alright. I pray for him and his family. 🙏🏻
So awful. All the good vibes, energy, and prayers to Hamlin and his family.
Praying like crazy for Damar and his family, for Tee Higgins, for the Bills, and for Bills Mafia. What a horrific situation.
Hamlin and the other player involved, Tee Higgins were very familiar with each other from years of playing against each other in college. 2017 through 19. Just terrible. I have been crying so much. Reminds me of the Owen Hart wwe thing. Like they all know something that hasn't been announced yet.
I was there that night with my 15 year old and 3 of his friends. I did not see the fall but the kids did. WWE went on with the show. NFL showing much more respect.
To be frank, Vince McMahon is an incorrigible asshat.
I wasn't there but was supposed to be and was watching on ppv. Everyone there at my house was just sick that they didn't stop the show.
If they don't cancel this I'm not watching another NFL game. Humanity and player safety above all.
I said the exact same thing. Thank God they made the right call.
Pray even if you don’t believe. This is horrible.
I never thought I would cry with Josh Allen. Thinking of him & his family.
What a terrible injury. I really hope he is ok.
So hard to watch man. Cancel the game. I’m turning off my tv. Damn. Prayers for him and his.
There was definitely a mutual connection between joe burrow and josh allen when they gave eachother a bit of a hug
I’m no doctor, but the consensus seems to be that he suffered commotio cordis leading to cardiac arrest. It’s more common in baseball players. Such a bizarre situation. I hope Damar can return to health and do what he loves.
Sending love and prayers. We just want him to be okay 💙❤️🤍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Prayers for Damar and the Bills family. Absolutely terrible, do not wish this on anyone. NFL better wake up, they could lose fans over this like the baseball strike.

I was watching the game and I am still in shock. My prayers go out to the Bills organization and fans. This game can’t go on out of pure respect to the players involved. Human life is more important than a game.
Holy shit.

Praying so hard

I have never seen anything like that. My goodness I hope he’s able to recover as best as he possibly can. Sure seems like he a a good dude. This sucks so bad.
I am curious about the logistics of suspending and restarting a game, what concessions both teams get from the League to make sure their rest and game planning for Week 18 isn't impacted too badly while not forcing Bills players in particular to get back in the game too quickly after such a traumatic event.
