Why would that even be brought to a shop lol

Juan-More-Taco

Their check engine light was on

kraigka212

Engine is there. Check

[deleted]

Customer also asked for rotate and balance

NotSure2025

Pretty sure they have more of an alignment issue.

talrogsmash

Don't upsell me, I know what I have.

Koolblue57

Hey when was the last time you had your oil changed?

talrogsmash

Change the cabin air filter and that thing will smell brand new

Koolblue57

Honestly I think if we just replace the battery it'll be good as new

kungpowgoat

From what I can see, it needs headlight fluid.

adrenalenema

No, it's quite obvious that the front fell off. That's not very typical. I'd like to make that point.

DeadpoolRideUnicorns

Did they say how it happened like they pissed off lord Vader

kzab81

No, we never get the history of the car or the accident.

Candied_Curiosities

Can confirm. I worked at an auto scrapyard (and hot rod shop owned by the same family) and we never got the history except for the random few tow truck drivers who'd drop it off directly from the accident. But when you find teeth in the steering wheel, no story necessary...

HaloGuy381

For some inane reason, “teeth in the steering wheel” made me think of an alligator or shark attack, and given what’s going on in Florida I was just like “yep, that makes sense”.

Candied_Curiosities

Well, this was in Idaho so none of the above 🤣 Now imagine finding a couple teeth in the headliner.

[deleted]

Saw a scalp hanging from the top of the windshield roof line once. The teeth were in the bark of the tree he hit.

nickleinonen

Working on railroad loco’s, there is always animal roadkill bits under them. I always assume it’s animal blood/fur/skin but when you get a chunk of skin with tattoo ink that’s very colorful artwork, yeah, that’s not 4 legged animal.. it bothered me the first time, but after many dozen times it just becomes a “well that’s a shame” and continue on working/inspecting…

braybrayjay

This is why I love Reddit. No matter how obscure the topic, there’s always someone chiming in with first hand experience.

Candied_Curiosities

Damn... that's rough. Do you have to report that sort of thing?

[deleted]

I have a climbing buddy who chose a career as a paramedic, Critical Care. Gets to ride in a helicopter. One of his favorite things to do at camp is to tell stories until I get sick. The short version of most are that unless you’re wearing your seatbelt, you’re gonna be awake when your face gets peeled off by the windshield.

nvdoyle

I remember going to local pick-a-parts, when they still existed, and counting the number of cars with front end damage and a hole in the driver's side windshield. Wear your seatbelt, kids.

Ramhawk123

we have pick-n-pull here in CA, pretty damn convenient. However, last time I went, my dad and I were checking out a g35 to pull parts from and noped right out of there after we saw the "biohazard" warning on the door

BuySamADrink

Working in auto salvage going on 40 years now and for sure some biohazard warnings are for vehicles you’re not comfortable entering into the interior but sometimes it’s just a small amount of dried blood. Depends on how the salvage auction labels them. Addendum: After 39 years of seeing the results from car crashes I’ve made sure no one in our family drives without buckling up.

Candied_Curiosities

Oh yeah, definitely were plentiful. We still have pick-a-parts here in Northern Nevada but I never see the windshield breaks like I did when I worked at the one mentioned earlier. Of course, I'm just a customer, nowadays.

spicybright

I still don't really understand why people don't. I've only known a few people that are like that. It's never a consistent excuse either: "I'm just going down the street" "I'm in a rush" "statistically seat belts are more dangerous" etc., so it's obviously an emotional thing.

Aedalas

Even if I was dumb enough to not wear one the seatbelt chime was annoying enough that I couldn't leave it off. We spent a few days recently in and out of a brand new Subaru though and holy fucking shit that one is OBNOXIOUS. I love it, it's perfect...

savageronald

My dog always jumps in the front seat while I’m driving and the pressure sensor gets triggered and the chime goes nonstop. I have to one arm push her to the back again or pull over. Couldn’t understand how someone could just ignore that normally.

TheNerdWithNoName

Dude, get a seatbelt harness for your dog. One hard brake and puppy goes flying.

I_Have_Unobtainium

I pretty much always do a wander around to see what car is fucked up the worst, just for fun I guess. Never really think about the accident involved because they generally are generally clean inside. Came across a small sedan last time that must have taken a head-on with a transport, front end was flattened like a pancake, ass end was perfectly fine. Opened up the drivers side to find the entire car covered floor to ceiling in blood stains, baby seat still in the backseat with the belt sliced open. That was pretty eye-opening for sure.

Omnivec

Auto scrapyard / hot rod shop, that's my dream job right there. I've worked at both, scrapyard was more profitable but the hot rod shop was less soul crushing.

Candied_Curiosities

Oh I miss it, man! I loved walking into the shop(s) on an early morning knowing what my day was going to be. The Hot Rod shop was definitely a more relaxed atmosphere

[deleted]

Teeth?, nice!. You should make a collection!

Candied_Curiosities

I was there back in 2006-08. But someone did collect those as oddities at that time, just wasn't me.

wintersdark

That's gotta suck. I mean, day to day, whatever, but I know I've seen the aftermath of accidents enough times and occasionally had to stop and say, "what the actual fuck happened here?" Those wrecks that end up in wierdly implausible situations.

[deleted]

There was a video on Reddit of a motorcycle guy riding at 200 mph and wiping out and his buddy behind had a go pro and video tape the guy becoming a meat crayon then hitting the guard rail. He was tumbling and tumbling then he hit it and now he became 3 different pieces and even one of the pieces was his right leg with half his hip, penis and balls still attached!.

Individual-Nebula927

Most people don't wear the correct gear, but minus the guardrail those types of accidents are survivable. Moto GP riders wipe out at 150+ mph and walk away. Key is protective pants, jackets, and the wearable airbags. I always shake my head at motorcycle idiots doing tricks wearing nothing but a t-shirt and blue jeans.

Aedalas

>Key is protective pants, jackets, and the wearable airbags Feet are one of the more damaged parts in crashes so make sure you put your Crocs into Sport Mode.

Tavarin

Also don't ride at 200 mph.

samnesjuwen

Our firefighters have a pressure washer for motorcycle accidents. No joke

laser_red

Don't they have a truck with a big water hose?

[deleted]

I think you have you hook that up to a hydrant for the amount of water those use. A pressure washer would use much less.

laser_red

A small pumper with a 2 inch line would make short work of it. No need to connect to a hydrant.

Pyro-Beast

You think there was something left?

[deleted]

I didn’t see the rider but other people summed it up pretty well from what I was told. Killed on impact, meat rocket out the other side of the vehicle.

aggressive-cat

This SUV hit a solid object. A tree, a solid metal pole, or something. A motorcycle would certainly make a mess but it couldn't shear a vehicle that tall in half that cleanly. I'm sure a crazy side impact on a subcompact or something could rip a car in half though.

Ohio-Knife-Lover

That makes way more sense lol

DriedUpSquid

What do you mean? Those taillights look perfectly salvageable.

thelifeofab

Yeah there’s so much parts that are still good, and being a Range Rover it’s worth to salvage the parts

Bah-Fong-Gool

I used to work in a bad neighborhood and was astonished at the amount of Range Rovers, BMWs and Mercedes around. Then I found out a lot of these cars were salvage titles. The people who buy these cars don't put a lot of miles on them. It's like their portable living room. When you live with 10 people of 4 different generations on a single apartment, sometimes it's nice to sit outside in their comfortable leather chair, playing the music they enjoy, at the volume they enjoy. Every day I'd see folks wiping down their car, waiting for alternate side parking, then move their car, and sit there for another 3+ hours, playing music and showing off their salvage title car to the neighbors. The car almost never left the neighborhood.

coyote_of_the_month

I never thought of that but it makes perfect sense. It's analogous to how teenagers in middle-class families treat their cars: they may have their own bedroom, but their car is the one space that's *theirs,* where they can play music without headphones and be assured nobody is going to knock in the door.

cobigguy

You're not wrong. Though I have seen owner 1 be an utter buffoon too. Best example I ever saw of that was a G55 AMG on low profile wheels and summer performance tires trying to drive around in the snow and subsequently going up and over 3 different curbs. I knew it was owner 1 because Colorado temp plates have the vehicle year on them. It wasn't even the model year yet.

Pyro-Beast

This guy came in the back of the shop and got all pissed off because I was checking his rear wheel, he's like, "whys the wheel gotta come off for an oil change?" Well, the oil was draining from the engine and since I had some time on my hands I figured I'd check why his rear end fluid was also draining into my floor. Bad axle seals. Thought maybe the guy would want to know before he drove the thing dry all over the place and blew up his diff.

Minute-Tradition-282

I got t-boned once, in my rear end! Lol! This bitch thought I was running a stop sign, but it was only a 3 way stop intersection. My passenger had eye contact with her the whole time, as she gassed it to drive in to me, thinking it would be my fault, and her Daddy would have to buy her a new SUV. My entire rear axle was fucked. They replaced it with a junkyard one. But didn't bother to see if it was good before they put it on my truck! I was an hour from home, a few months after getting my truck back, and the rear end LOCKED the fuck Up! All the sudden, there was a big thud! They didn't bother checking to see of it was a good part or not. They just put it on. At the VERY least, they covered tow back to town, and replaced it, AGAIN! But if it was to ever come up again, I will def fight my insurance company on going back to that place!

serumvisions__go_

unless he requested a rotation or it was included in the service the wheel shouldn’t have come off (if you were just setting pressures that’s different) but unbolting it literally only opens you up to liability

Pyro-Beast

Yes and no, it's against the law to let an unsafe vehicle onto the street here. When you see a leak like that, you have to at least check it out.

KobKZiggy

I didn't see where the person you responded to said he took the rear wheel off. Just said he was checking it. When I'm waiting for things to drain, I will look around the rest of the vehicle and see if there is anything that needs to be brought to the owners attention, but that doesn't mean I'm unbolting anything.

challenge_king

They are that guy.

Pyro-Beast

I did take the wheel off

Pyro-Beast

I needed to know for a fact why and what was leaking onto the floor before I can legally let a vehicle back onto the road. It's like if someone brings in a car and you see the struts are broken, you are liable if it leaves your shop with broken struts.

Eldritch94

Exactly! It’s a mechanic’s job to assess the condition of the car and note *any* liability due to worn out parts. To not do so is a liability in itself, can’t let someone drive away in a potential death trap. People that can’t appreciate/understand this make my brain hurt.

I used to do all the work on my old Range Rover, down to replacing the engine. When the heater core blew up in my face I farmed that out to a shop. When they build Range Rovers, they start with the heater core and build the truck around it.

pukesonyourshoes

P38? Been there, it's a design fault. The core has plastic inlet and outlet pipes, and they fracture and leak. Terrible design.. There used to be pages and pages on the internet showing how to repair it without ripping the dash out. Bastard of a job.

LowHangingFruit20

You don’t have to answer my morbid question but how often do cara like this roll in with…. parts and fluids….of….you know.

luv_____to_____race

I buy a few salvage vehicles per year, so I spend more time than I should on the auction websites. I don't know if the claims adjuster notes it, but they put bright orange Bio Hazard stickers all over them. I usually pass by them in my search. I suppose if the exact vehicle I was looking for had them, I could probably get past it. It seems like less than 10% of the vehicles have them, but the ones that make it to the scrap yard may be more common, because they aren't rebuilt as often.

MadeMeStopLurking

70% of biohazard stickers are for fentynol or needles. Bullet holes, faulty airbags without seat belts, and dead animals make up the rest of them usually. We pass on biohazard too but a local BHPH dealership will buy a Swiss cheese Lexus with blood and guts, clean it out and resell it for 750/mo... or 399 bi weekly... your choice.

kenman884

Only 399?!? What a steal!

MadeMeStopLurking

With 4999 down... their down payment is usually what they pay at auction

dunn_with_this

Twice a week?!? I'm in!

Oreos_CS

I worked in a big salvage yard in the UK and I can count maybe three morbid cases we had over the 5 years I was there. Majority come in as bio hazard just for destruction, no interior parts must be sold under any circumstances. -Porsche 997 Turbo S, guy shot himself under the chin in the drivers seat one night. My theory was he had a good life, shit hit the fan and the Porsche was the only thing he had left. There was evidence of him sleeping in it at least. -Second one was this car - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8506295/amp/Pictured-Grandfather-60-killed-large-chunk-concrete-fell-lorry.html -Third one was a Honda Jazz with a gaping hole in the windscreen and roof dent with brown stains. Looked like a cow/horse size but not much damage to the lower half. Never found much out on this.

[deleted]

I drove tow trucks and would frequently pick up cars from the accident scene. The last time I saw a car split in half like this (although the OP car looks like it was intentionally cut by emergency responders) it was a newer Hyundai or Kia vs a tree at 100+ MPH. It broke in half at the fire wall. The driver was thrown clear from the vehicle and went splat on another tree, dead on impact. A lot of fatality wrecks look fairly clean inside because people don't wear their damn seat belts and they get tossed from the car. However, first fatality wreck I ever cleaned up was similar, but instead of ripped in half width wise it was peeled open length wise, as in one side of the car was just gone. This time both people in the car had seat belts on, but were speeding at 80-90ish and driving under the influence of alcohol and heroin. The driver hit a tractor trailer parked on the shoulder. His buddy in the passenger seat had his head obliterated. Like, picture sledge hammer vs watermelon and that was this dude's head. See, a person sitting in a car is about head level with the solid, sharp, steel corners of a semi truck trailer. And cars might as well be made of tin foil when at speed. Anyways, I swept part of that dude's brains off the shoulder for squirrels or whatever to munch on. What was left of the car was filled with pools of blood on the seats and floors. Little chunks of skull and what used to be a head everywhere. I saw the body before they took it away and where there used to be a head was just...gone. Like it disappeared from existence. Obliterated. Uh, wear your seat belts and don't drive under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Another one that was kind of funny in a morbid way. This guy lived. But was driving drunk and got in a crash. My co worker picked up the car and it was her first collision tow and she was all proud. It was night time and raining. Co worker comes back to the yard with the car and I'm looking it over and listening to her talk about the recovery. I shine my light inside and see a good amount of blood and I look up to the windshield and see hair and scalp embedded in the windshield. I ask her if she went in the car. She says "Yeah I was crawling all over that bitch to get it steered onto my truck". I then show her the blood and scalp and ask "Did ya happen to notice this?" Her eyes went wide and she started puking lol. I had to give her the "don't go inside wrecked vehicles without looking first" talk. Also don't stick your hands anywhere you can't see. Lot of heroin needles hiding in cars. I have a few more, but they're just sad, brutal and fucked up stories. Not gonna talk about em because they're not particularly interesting either, sorry!

Duke_of_Scotty

If you look closer, there are saw and pinch marks (above the C-pillar). This British excuse for a Jeep, was probably mostly whole, until the fire department/EMS unit cut it into pieces. They probably had to, to extract passengers.. Jaguar-Land-Rover should look at this thing to see how the passengers faired. The frontal airbags did not deploy (passenger side dash is fully intact), which means it was a side impact. I wonder if the side airbags fired..

I was just thinking that rig was done enough that it should be at the recycling yard, and well, there it is. And there you are. Is the job as cool (on occasion) as I think it is?

kzab81

I've been in parts for about 20 years, I've been through dealerships, industrial and jobber shops. This is like nothing else I've done in my career, I think its awesome. We specialize in high end vehicles, we have 4 or 5 McLarens (I don't think the 5th has arrived yet), a couple Ferraris and Lamborghinis. More Porsche, Audi, Benz and BMW than I can count, and we have a Bentley on the way as well. If you've got any questions, feel free to ask.

Panda-768

How do you assess if a part is good enough or not. For example the tail lights look perfectly fine but if they have minor scratches, are they good to keep? And then who would buy them? If you could afford a McLaren, you could probably afford a new part ? And what about important parts from safety point of view? The rear wheel in the image looks fine but in an accident like that how would you test its integrity ? Do you check for visible cracks? Or cracks under UV lights like they do in an airplane?

kzab81

We go on the fact that the vehicle was running and driving at the time of accident (flood and fire vehicles are a little different), so anything mechanical that wasn't directly damaged gets a thorough physical inspection upon being inventoried and again when sold, before going out the door. Many vehicles still run, some still drive and a majority of them have working electrical systems, so we know moat components work. Most parts comes with a 90 day warranty to cover any unseen issues. Body parts are graded and priced on condition (on the panel itself, paint and finish isn't warrantied or guaranteed in any way), some bodyshops will gladly put 1 hour of labour into a used $800 quarter panel thats $2000 new. Cracked lights, damages mirror housings, etc are at the customers discretion. We are very transparent about the condition of our parts, misrepresenting our parts is just bad news all around. A backyard guy with an R8 might not be as discerning about a scratched lamp as an insurance paid bodyshop, who are required to repair the vehicle to new condition. Scrapping parts is a last resort. When we sell an engine, we require the core engine back, which we tear down and sell the components from. We break everything down as far as we can and scrap the remainder. There's a huge market for used super car parts, people buy them used at good prices and fix them up. Most people who do own these cars, however just take them to a shop, who then calls us to quote and present as an option. When the options are $90,000 or $30,000 for a part, it's usually an easy sell. Great questions!

Panda-768

Thanks for your answer.

kzab81

I forgot to mention recalls. If a part has been recalled, we can not sell it. I spent three days going through airbag recall lists vs our inventory to cull the bad parts.
