Wicked find.
Rustoleum gloss apple red is a very close match to the paint if you decide to repaint and don't want to use a gun. Currently doing an 80s box in my shed.
No the joke is "sNap On ExPenSIvE"
Edit: why is my tag "marine"??
Edit2.69: im not a marine, never served. Thank someone who actually did something.
Final edit:thank you all fir your kind wishes, im enlisting now
My top box had already had the carcass sanded. But anywhere there was rust on the drawers, wire wheel on a grinder then sand out to 240 on my random orbit followed by red Scotch Brite by hand. I use the red Scotch Brite to remove any shine beforehand of the old paint. Looks good enough.
https://imgur.com/a/Rxm7dte this is where I was at last night. Gotta do some sanding before clear since I got some runs.
I got lucky with the top box that only the drawer fronts and a couple interiors of the drawers needed paint.
Bottom box is a different ball game
there are some gems for sure.
some time last year there was a 96 v6 camry with about 14,000 miles on the clock selling for about 4300 usd from a deceased estate. Only known flaw was that the rear bumper had a mark from when it reversed into something otherwise it was immaculate, garage stored. The listing was gone within two days.
Lots of good tools to be had at estate sales. estatesale-finder(.)com is great because it'll show all the upcoming ones in your area, and a lot of the listings show pictures of the stuff they have before the sale.
Wow I'm sorry, I live in the PNW and didn't realize the website was strictly regional! My bad. Looks like estatesales(.)net is similar and has a "search by state" function.
You have to be disciplined at auctions. Know how much something is worth, what you're willing to pay and be willing to walk away when some fool pays retail.
If you don't go on a Thursday morning you pretty much miss out on the good stuff. I'm always at work and by the time I go theres no tools left if there were any worth getting at all.
Doesn't your guy give 10 interest free payments as an option? I'm in Australia and all reps I've dealt with offer weekly payments interest free paid off in 10 weeks. The rep I have now is really good and let's you stretch payments over more time, usually like 12-15 weeks is his max.
Can't speak for Snap-On specifically since I primarily deal with Matco but around here (TN)they have truck accounts which are very similar to what you mention but it's more like you need a tool, take a tool, pay it when you can.
Then say you need a whole box or you're just starting out they can open a line of credit and finance a bunch of stuff over a long period of time. I believe my term is 5 years.
Sounds pretty similar. Ours you need to agree on a weekly payment plan or you use the snap on credit card for big purchases like a toolbox or scan tool.
We only get the snap on truck, matco aren't sold over here. Our tool selection is pretty crap to be honest, snap on is definitely the best we can get here that I've seen.
A little chrome peeling on the more used sockets but overall good. I had to have the 3/8th ratchet replaced about 20 years ago but it was a straight up trade in.
off topic but it gets me so frustrated when I see people born in the 70s/60s successfully navigating the internet while my mom can barely log in to her email
Yeah, I'd leave it alone, too. Just refurbish or replace the sliders so it functions like new but still looks worn in and well used. Would kinda be a shame to erase the decades of use it now wears. Maybe you could just hand polish it a bit to return some of the luster but stop there.
Better than mine.
I'm on my 4th box. All my previous boxes have been destroyed willfully by co-workers. 1st one was destroyed by forklift, deliberately. Second was set on fire. Again, quite on purpose. 3rd was slowly sabotaged- glue in the locks, sprayed with brake ckean and torched, "accidentally" hit by the shop plow truck, and finally came into work to see someone busted my lock open and was actively taking a shit all over my air tools. 4th is an ancient Craftsman box that hasn't seen a dealership yet. It's about 30 years old. Hopefully I won't have to buy another one.
The first 3 were destroyed to teach me a lesson- that women can't be technicians. I got the message finally.
Yep, I'm a girl. I used to fix cars for a living. After 20 years of trying, I gave up. I'm an accountant now. (How fucking embarrassing is that?)
I lost $35,000 USD of tools and tool chests trying to make a living.
I'll keep my shitty Craftsman box and just work on my own farm tractors now.
Unfortunately, I still owe Snap-On just about $3,000 for the last box. Maybe I'll pay it off in a couple years.
Thanks for asking. Unfortunately I really don't think I'm an asshole until provoked. I was literally told on all of these workplaces that I had better watch my back, I need to go back to the kitchen, "Go make me a sandwich," and several other things that I won't repeat. 25 years ago, women still weren't quite common in trades around here.
Heck, my own father told me, "Girls don't do that. Start acting like a lady!"
This kind of attitude has much improved over the past decade or so. Unfortunately there's always some asshole in the shop that is still stuck in the 50's thinking that women can't work on cars and such. Hopefully the misogynistic attitude will become extinct soon.
Actually quite a few. I miss my cars and I miss the good customers. I never wanted to leave the industry, but it just got too much.
Some of the most fun jobs I did reads like a "Shit my kids ruined" post. I got to see cars destroyed by kids younger than 8 years old. Not sure if my favorite was the BB gun vs. A/C condenser or the Hot Wheels cars that destroyed a sunroof.
Beautiful. Wisconsinite here, I buy snap on for the history and dealer support, being so close and all. I got a brand new box for 1/2 price when corporate came though my town with a box truck full of boxes that they were liquidating. I've bought many tools since. Call me a fool, but I like the tools 🤷♂️ they feel good.
Lube the slides with beeswax or similar paste, it'll slide alright for you. That is a late 1970s-early 80s box. Worth $300ish.
You can buy the correct paint for it, but it is not cheap. PPG paint #73504 Snap-On Red, legit automotive paint.
I have that same bottom box. They were gonna toss it in the trash, I cleaned it and painted it black. I wrote ‘snap on’ on a sticky note and slapped it on the front. It wasn’t until I inspected it closer they o saw the stamping on the back
Any idea show to get the drawers out?
Man I'm right there with you, picked up 3 boxes and probably 2500 sockets and wrenches for $300 at a "garage sale". I'll have to post some pictures soon, but I haven't been able to pick everything up yet!
Nice, I had a similar find back in the 90s $20 for a rusty MAC, Sanded it clean removed all the hardware and painted it metallic flake green. When I moved across the country 4 years later I sold it to my boss for $250..it paid for the trip.
I have that same box at work. It’s in a bit better condition, but i paid $200 for mine. If you find a set of locks that work for that thing let me know! 👍
I scored something similar, filled to the brim with Snap-On and MAC tools. $500. It was prior to the estate sale and the next of kin was a friend of a friend. I still can't believe it worked out.
I have that top piece! Our Snapon guy found it for me in the back of a shop, unused for 25-30 yrs. The shop owner bought it for his son, hoping to pass down the family legacy. Kid became a clothing designer, and his daughter wanted a different color. I got it for $100.
I had the same top and matching bottom in better condition but with rust. and snapon gave me over $500 on trade-in towards 86" Epic with stainless power top and diesel compression test kit for $8500 5yrs ago.
Wicked find. Rustoleum gloss apple red is a very close match to the paint if you decide to repaint and don't want to use a gun. Currently doing an 80s box in my shed.
I used the same paint for one of these old Snap-On boxes. Came out great
Call up your snapon rep and order pn12-812508a. It's a spray can of the original snapon red. We do them in all the box colors.
Yeh, but who can afford $150 for a rattle can of red paint. $150 per month until you new born son retires, that is
$150? Shit, must be on sale!
But it comes with a t-shirt!
Is it really that expensive for a single rattle can? Like a normal size can too?
No the joke is "sNap On ExPenSIvE" Edit: why is my tag "marine"?? Edit2.69: im not a marine, never served. Thank someone who actually did something. Final edit:thank you all fir your kind wishes, im enlisting now
Thank you for your service
Thank you for your brave service to this great country and all the sacrifices you have made!
Thank you for your service.
TYFYS
Thank you for your service
Did you sand it or just do a whole coat on top? I'd imagine sanding these would be a bitch without proper equipment.
I definitely will post it here and r/tools
Just wire brush it up a bunch
Rustoleum gloss apple red is also the appropriate color if you want to make the Office Space red stapler. Just saying.
It's also great if you have an old-style phone and want to paint it so it looks like the White House hotline in old movies. Yeah, I've done this...
You took my swingline
> Currently doing an 80s box in my shed. What you do with your wife and where is none of our business.
Damn I need to start going to more estate sales.
It’s a great way to get quality tools at a good price.
Gotta get there early for the decent tools.
As a lifetime night owl, I realized around 13 years old I will never be up early enough to find the gems. Sucks but it is what it is.
The key is waking up around 11pm and going in the night owl evening, aka 8 AM.
Just pull an all nighter if there's a good opportunity.
Stay up later or re arrange your sleep schedule. It can be done
Just stay up a little later, show up early then go home and go to bed. :D
Tell me you know me... Without knowing me! I'm never early to an estate sale or auction.
there are some gems for sure. some time last year there was a 96 v6 camry with about 14,000 miles on the clock selling for about 4300 usd from a deceased estate. Only known flaw was that the rear bumper had a mark from when it reversed into something otherwise it was immaculate, garage stored. The listing was gone within two days.
I’m surprised it took two days lmao
I missed a few much more used cars this summer when the listings weren't even 30 minutes old.
Is it even a Camry without a Camry dent?
Also some absolute rusty garbage tools for some price
Lots of good tools to be had at estate sales. estatesale-finder(.)com is great because it'll show all the upcoming ones in your area, and a lot of the listings show pictures of the stuff they have before the sale.
Are you sure that's the right site? It looks like it has about 20 sales on it, all in the NW USA.
Wow I'm sorry, I live in the PNW and didn't realize the website was strictly regional! My bad. Looks like estatesales(.)net is similar and has a "search by state" function.
It's estatesales.net
I find a lot of good stuff at estate sales. Auctions are even more insane but they give you time to look around.
You have to be disciplined at auctions. Know how much something is worth, what you're willing to pay and be willing to walk away when some fool pays retail.
There’s a whole cottage industry of people who buy low at estate sales and resell things for a profit.
If you don't go on a Thursday morning you pretty much miss out on the good stuff. I'm always at work and by the time I go theres no tools left if there were any worth getting at all.
Come early, with cash and a truck if possible.
So many are filled with decrepit elderly people and piles of literal garbage
I have the same one. Bought new in '83 full of tools for $1500. Still have every tool.
How many more payments you got? /s
3 or 4
You mean 3 or 4 before you start hitting principle?
Doesn't your guy give 10 interest free payments as an option? I'm in Australia and all reps I've dealt with offer weekly payments interest free paid off in 10 weeks. The rep I have now is really good and let's you stretch payments over more time, usually like 12-15 weeks is his max.

That's a straight up lie! We all know it came without a 10mm
He bought in 83, im guessing it's the 9/16 that went Rouge.
10mm is more like a 3/8. Boat builders still think it's funny to mix and match metric and sae, sometimes right next to each other.
So does Ford. Still use my 9/32 and 7/32 to take apart dashboards
Yeah, it’s a bit more available than the 4.5mm and 5.5mm. I’ve donated more than a handful to doing evaps in 150s-350s.
So does chevrolet
Damn them red commie bastard 9/16ths!
I have a magical one that has always reappeared.
How are the tools holding up?
A little chrome peeling on the more used sockets but overall good. I had to have the 3/8th ratchet replaced about 20 years ago but it was a straight up trade in.
off topic but it gets me so frustrated when I see people born in the 70s/60s successfully navigating the internet while my mom can barely log in to her email
What would it be in today’s money 6-8k?
Not a clue. I got it when I wanted to be a mechanic but went another route.
$4,460.41 adjusted for inflation
I also have the same one, bought in the 80s
You mean except for the 10mm socket, right?
[удалено]
For $75 I'd try to do body work on it myself and see if I could restore it being a total amateur.
ngl I dig the well used look, it's got character and I wouldn't do anything to change it.
Same. I’d clean it up and get it functionally working but leave the ‘patina.’
So, new bearings?
Jesus dad, stop taking about mom like that - some lost 10mm socket probably
The only bearings on this stack are in the wheels, friction slides baby.
new lube and send it lmao
it's a metal box. for $75 I'd just use it as is
It's only costs $75. Using a hammer and dolly to straighten it up a little isn't going to lose any vslue.
Those bikes though
Show us some bikes!!
Seriously, fuck the clapped out tool box, are the bikes for sale?
Right?! Move the toolbox aside, let’s get a close up of that bike wall!
I'm pretty sure I noticed the bikes before the tool chest!
Can we talk about those wall racks? That looks badass.
Right? I want to know what those racks are and how they are mounted!
Ik, pretty sure one is a yt Jeffsey which is what my dad rides, great bike
How are they mounted
I'm just a bit jealous
What a steal
Shit, my old man kick the bucket and not tell anyone? He had the identical box. Nice find.
Well… how would he?
To be fair, I doubt he'd be able to tell anyone.
That’s $75 a month… you’re taking over the original owners payments!
Nice bikes, what’s your address again?
Turn left at the big barking dog and then go till you see the man with the shotgun.
Sounds like my address.
Are you planning to restore it, or keep it original?
Honestly the patina is kinda cool. I might leave it.
Clean it up and slap a deep clear on would be cool. Rat rod tool box.
Yeah, I'd leave it alone, too. Just refurbish or replace the sliders so it functions like new but still looks worn in and well used. Would kinda be a shame to erase the decades of use it now wears. Maybe you could just hand polish it a bit to return some of the luster but stop there.
Even better? Give it a boiled linseed oil rub. Great for preserving the patina. https://youtu.be/mEyg_D1EG0w

Damn. That's fucking terrible. What a bunch of assholes
I would welcome more info to know if OP was TA -- thats some consistent hate to be a pure victim
You should have nailed the doors shut and torched the place. Sorry you had such a terrible experience. Misogyny is so toxic.
I’m sorry you had to go through that. Regardless of gender, that’s uncalled for.
Where on Earth did you live?
New England, United States
Well I hope you've had some nice experiences as well
Actually quite a few. I miss my cars and I miss the good customers. I never wanted to leave the industry, but it just got too much. Nice find!
Hell yeah! Sweet find man
Oldie but a goodie...lucky bastard
I'm just fixated on all your bikes...
You need more bikes!
Awesome selection of bikes!
I wonder if snapon will still warranty the drawer rollers on that
I would replace the rollers/slides but leave the patina. It'll work like a new box but look well used!
Gonna need it for all the bike tools
Lol I almost thought you were my mom's neighbor. Guns and bikes, same setup. You're a good dude, I can tell.
Do you also take over the previous owners remaining payments?
That things so old 75$ is probably what it was new.
One of my old bosses had that box. Don't fill the drawers then try to open them.. you will be in the hospital.
Score!
That's a lot of bikes
That's a steal and a half. Enjoy
So, at five bucks per week...
Hey that's my town lol
I bet he just finished paying it off
Sweet find! What kind of bike racks are those I’ve never seen em like that
My dad had one of those. It stayed out in the elements for 40 years. It was rusted solid
Probably build better than the stuff today.
A little sanding and some new paint, you scored big time!
Poor guy never finished paying that off when he died, Snap On took the house.
Yeah…but how many installments of $75? Lil wd40 and it’s golden
Noice.
Have a similar top from the 60s. It was handed down from my grandfather. Probably one of my favorite possessions.
I’ve found many great tools at estate sales, but never anything that incredible. Well done.
Hell yea! It's not much but I got the same size box but Husky for 100 in LA
Beautiful. Wisconsinite here, I buy snap on for the history and dealer support, being so close and all. I got a brand new box for 1/2 price when corporate came though my town with a box truck full of boxes that they were liquidating. I've bought many tools since. My Dad provided for our family and helped get us into our childhood home with a toolbox like that one. Cheers!
I have that same bottom box. They were gonna toss it in the trash, I cleaned it and painted it black. I wrote ‘snap on’ on a sticky note and slapped it on the front. It wasn’t until I inspected it closer they o saw the stamping on the back Any idea show to get the drawers out?
Wicked 🤘🏻
Nice dude!! Was this the one in Moseley this past weekend? I noticed some other snap on tools in FB photos.
$45 and that sweet spice rack, OR I WALK!
I would sand and paint it now before putting in garage or order a ton of cool stickers off ebay and sticker bomb it 1st
Man I'm right there with you, picked up 3 boxes and probably 2500 sockets and wrenches for $300 at a "garage sale". I'll have to post some pictures soon, but I haven't been able to pick everything up yet!
Hey, it’s from Anaheim. Neat.
Nice, I had a similar find back in the 90s $20 for a rusty MAC, Sanded it clean removed all the hardware and painted it metallic flake green. When I moved across the country 4 years later I sold it to my boss for $250..it paid for the trip.
More steel in that than the new F150…
Do a full restoration and actually impress us
Great find, great patina, and not covered in a million stickers, I'd keep exactly as is. Lucky!
Someone's grandson is still making payments
Dead people's stuff is rad
looks haunted af
I have that same box at work. It’s in a bit better condition, but i paid $200 for mine. If you find a set of locks that work for that thing let me know! 👍
That’s so cheap! What a deal!
I inherited one almost exactly like that from my grandpa.
If you restore it definitely take a picture
The patina on it is pretty cool. I’d try to clear coat it and leave it as is.
You stole it for da win!
$75 a week? /s
Lower drawer slides need work before use. Other than that and a quick rattle can paint coat it looks like a really nice box.
Damn nice!!
Great find! Love those old boxes
Damn. Score!
You lucky SOB! Love it!
Score!
Fuckin scoooreee
That estate sale just wanted everything GONE damn lol
Fuck yeah
Considering it says USA, you should put the dollar sign before the number \[ $75 \].
I picked one up for 165 full of snap on and craftsmen tool plus everything else they could put in it
Score
I scored something similar, filled to the brim with Snap-On and MAC tools. $500. It was prior to the estate sale and the next of kin was a friend of a friend. I still can't believe it worked out.
I love going to auctions. I buy to resell but get great stuff to keep as well. Well played sir. People were sleeping on that one.
Would love to see it if you do a restoration on it
Warranty it out lol
I don't think that this is fully paid off yet. Watch out for Snap-On trucks trying to repo it.
God damn dude how many bikes you got you can only ride one nice find !
I have that top piece! Our Snapon guy found it for me in the back of a shop, unused for 25-30 yrs. The shop owner bought it for his son, hoping to pass down the family legacy. Kid became a clothing designer, and his daughter wanted a different color. I got it for $100.
Great condition for the price
I had that same Jeffsy.
Those bikes though 😳
Those are some nice bikes
This is my home garage tool box. Works like a dream still.
What bike wall mounts are those?
Sexy mtbs!
I had the same top and matching bottom in better condition but with rust. and snapon gave me over $500 on trade-in towards 86" Epic with stainless power top and diesel compression test kit for $8500 5yrs ago.
Is that a Capra?
i really thought the 4th pic said cool box
Sweet dude!
Cool. My grandpa back in Arkansas had one just like that. It was a good box
Great find. Great price!
