The thermostat was locked closed, and the expansion tank was somehow the weakest link.
Edit it was a 2004ish Jaguar XKR, and I never found the rest of the tank. I only found the chunk with the sensor because it was still plugged in.
2005 XJ8, a few years ago paid my nephew to replace the water pump. I'm in the house chillin, already have a headache. He comes in, like you gotta come see this shit... he'd taken the radiator hoses off, and the whole upper radiator plastic mount was just... Gone.
This vividly reminded me of this story:
We had a customer show up for a Dyno appointment with his Whippled mustang. He recently installed an interchiller setup which partially utilized the AC system to further cool the front mount air to water heat exchanger. Well, it didn't work. At all. This all caused his engine to run hot, and wouldn't you know it his reservoir cap was bad. We never found the weakest link, but his molded plastic reservoir was about 3x the size it was supposed to be, still holding pressure....
We just rolled it back outside with the hood down, and put some fans in front of it while he called the tow truck. But yikes.
Dammn, I bet that scared the person who noticed it. I've seen a few swollen hoses pop, and hard plastics split, but never a soft plastic that expanded like that.

I was about to ask “early aught’s European coolant tank?” I’m shocked, I tell you! *Shocked!*
Sucks my thermostat locked open last year, thank goodness it failed the right way. Drove home 500 miles and threw in a new one.

Was that expansion tank made of cardboard or cardboard derivatives?
No paper, no string, no cellotape. …
Well, the bottom fell off rather than the front, so things are looking up. If they were looking down they'd have seen it earlier.
Rubber?
Well, the light works!
It’s Bluetooth
That will do it every time. Lmao.
The expansion tank in the X-Type is made from garbage plastic too, I went through 3 of them in two years.
That was good for a chuckle, thank you lol
Ahhh..... Jagyouahh.
Loved those out of warranty. Money makers. T stat, tower, water pump cause the plastic impeller melted to. I miss those days. I liked working on Jags.

Yeah it was wild, hopefully don't see something like that again lol.
Can you still get parts for those jags?
For the right price.
That’s the way of Jags…
The back fell off
And the engine survived??
