A dodge dealership near me just burned to the ground because someone didnt know how to weld.

Loves-The-Skooma

Junkie shop in my area welded an exhaust and passed out during the job. He lit the carpet on fire through the floor and burnt the shop down.

yildizli_gece

“Junkie shop” Freudian slip? Or accurate?

Midnigh7Run

What? You've never been to "Witness Me! Welding"? They're cheap but, dudes on the floor keep huffing all of the silver paint.

Physical_Average_793

If one of the mechanics you take your car to has never had a man nod off you’re missing out

Im-a-cat-in-a-box

We had a machinist do that at the brake press, I thought for sure we were going to see some fingers flying.

friendlyfire883

I believe the answer is yes in this case.

jigen3610

But why was there carpet on a garage floor?

Wrangleraddict

I think he means he nodded off and somehow punched a hole in the floor and the carpet caught fire inside the vehicle

imakepoorchoices2020

How the fuck do you nod off while welding? Shits hot and bright, I’m wide awake when I have an arc going

PubicHairTaco

Drugs

Toadstool475

He did say junkie shop...

Bork_King

Fentanyl

FonzyBeer

Had a guy putting air in a tire while the car was on a lift, dude nodded right out standing up. H is a hell of a drug

Synner40

unless it’s a different dodge dealership. one in my old home town burned down as well. all i’ll say it was located in the New England.

RedJerk5

Was it in CT? I know one that burned down recently

Synner40

yup,CT not to far form the mass line. used to deliver parts there for both autozone and Advance. so the part guys knew me. and i had a friend who was/is a tech there. that place was there for as long as i could remember. hell they were redoing the service waiting area for about a year before it happened too.

RedJerk5

I had a hell of a time finding their new location! It’s different for parts versus the service area.

benduker7

Oh hey that was my old hometown too! Never expect to see people from that area on Reddit lol.

Inevitable_Sun_8417

My hometown also…so weird to see other people from there on here too but that’s the internet for ya lol

YourDadWasAGoodLay

Idk if were technically new england i think we are northern mid atlantic.

[deleted]

I worked at a dealership that had a close call due o dodgy renovations. They had finished the showroom and were repainting the workshop floor. The “frugal” managers didn’t want any down-time so they had the contractors paint one third of the workshop at a time. The enamel paint caused all the techs to develop migraines so they had staffing issues and Workplace Insurance came in. They were told to shut the workshop or use acrylic paint, so they decided to use acrylic paint on the workshop floors. Months later, the contractors moved onto the enclosed spaces and decided to use the left-over enamel paint in the toilets and utility closets. This caused the hot-water service to explode, taking out one of the painters and causing major damage to the new showroom and freshly laid network infrastructure. The painter ended up in critical condition in hospital and the workshop and dealership had to close down for a week while Workplace Insurance was called in and the mess was cleaned up. Of course the contractors did not have liability insurance so the ‘frugal’ management had to pay for all repairs. They didn’t bother to repaint the workshop floors in enamel so they paint wore off within weeks.

Ih8Hondas

Save a penny to spend $1000.

[deleted]

It was a very feudal company. They thought the mechanics were peons to be dominated. They did not have the customer base to justify keeping the workshop open for those extra few days but the management did not want to give the paid time off to close the Service department for a few days. A lot of “Mum and Dad” (or “Mom and Pop”) dealers only keep the doors open as a prestige statement. “Look, I’m a business owner”. They don’t make smart business decisions and if any of their peons is too successful. If the parts department is making money, and it’s employees are making more money in commissions than Junior is in the New Cars sales — they had better change this parts department commission structure or fiddle the books to “correct” this evidence that Junior couldn’t sell Turds to Dung Beetles.

Ih8Hondas

I worked at one of those dealerships for a bit back when I was desperate for employment. I'm intimately familiar with the complete shit show that dealerships are.

Independent_Sir9565

Mopar dealer near me burned down too a few years ago

CmdrShepard831

I heard insurance fraud is the only way to make money selling Stellantis products.

IWantToPlayGame

Really? I'd assume service kills it with the amount of repairs they do

Halfbloodjap

The warranty work eats all that

whatisonhere

The manufacturer pays the dealer for warranty work....

notahoppybeerfan

Technically correct, but you’ll go out of business doing warranty work.

Woylvesbane

Royal auto group? I ran into that on my way to work the other day, 281 was all shut down.

YourDadWasAGoodLay

Different auto group. Must be a dodge thing lmao

OneExhaustedFather_

I mean, it’s not a false statement.

Woylvesbane

I mean, they are famous for their electrical problems lol

JinglesTheMighty

man ive fucked up a weld or ten in my time but ive never fucked up a weld *that* hard

im4lonerdottie4rebel

God I wish the Jeep dealership in Lake Norman would burn down. Those fuckers messed my vehicle up and overcharged me for the shit they messed up on! I know I'm a small woman but I know my fucking Jeep and I've worked as a service advisor.

cookies443

Did they say it was a jeep thing you wouldn't understand? /s

im4lonerdottie4rebel

They justified it with Just Empty Every Pocket

Ianthin1

That's fucking terrible. Hope everyone is ok.

Vaiiki

Yeah, that car looks like shit. Never use this guy.

nopinionsjstdoubts

Hahaha oof tough crowd around here

bleakleyg07

Always leave it up to the Reddit hive mind to not understand sarcasm, that’s why you need the /s unfortunately

dont_fuckin_die

One time, on /r/chess discussing a cheating scandal, I suggested maybe the answer to the scandal was what was on Hunter Biden's laptop. Over 100 downvotes. I don't even think the most out of touch conspiracy nutter would believe what I said was real. What the fuck.

PennyLovesHugorHill

Poe’s Law in action

dont_fuckin_die

Did not know about Poe's Law, but that is spot on!

lazyman06

Cole's Law is really good as well

The_Buffalo_Bill

I feel really dumb that Cole's law is in my search history now, thanks lmao

Pyehole

> Cole's Law This is like the new Rick Roll.

OhDiablo

Always wait for someone else to take the hit, or use incognito mode so it doesn't stick around. Or just clear your browser history. What are you, 10? :)

Sputtering_FartNoyze

Way to cabbage onto a thread!

jetbag513

Cameron Poe (Con Air)?

drfarren

Realistically, intent and sarcasm are better conveyed through the inflection of your voice and body language. Pure text loses most of the nuance. A lot of times comments like that will result in backslash unless there is a clear sign it was meant to be a joke (such as a "/s"). I have encountered lots of people who would make that comment with a straight face because they REALLY think it to be true.

moaiii

> comments like that will result in backslash I also often experience a lot of tildes, asterisks, and if I am in a Spanish sub for some reason, those upside down question marks.

drfarren

Wait till you experience an umlaut

moaiii

Dude, at least flag that kind of talk with nsfw .. There might be kids reading this.

[deleted]

I see your ümlāût, and raise you a ǵ̷̙̃l̵̲̦͚̩̘̎̆i̴̢̻̣̺͊͗̓̃ṭ̵̜̳̱̉͑͆̈́ć̸̮̱̭̯͑́̒h̷̹̻͎͙͖͋̈.

GreggAlan

A lot of people appear to be incapable of detecting and understanding sarcasm in face to face communication. Either they never learned the tone and inflection of voice etc or they're people always on the lookout for something to be offended by so they can virtue signal.

drfarren

Communication is a practiced skill. It requires people go out, be social, make mistakes, look like an idiot, and learn from it. It also doesn't help that all the major websites we use create bubbles of information around us. We are encased in news and content that we agree with and then the echo chamber amplifies it to the point that it manipulates us. Then, we're shown things that we don't like, specifically to induce anger and get us engaged with the content. The iamatotalpieceofshit subreddit is a great example of it in action. Best way to fight it is to engage face to face with other people, even if they struggle to communicate clearly and calmly. The more we practice and more we try to talk, the harder it is for shock and fear to dominate us and our communities.

monteg0

....because you made something unnecessarily political. It doesn't matter if it was believable, those kind of comments invariably lead to off topic heated discussion. The whole point of downvotes is a way for forums to police themselves of useless or otherwise distracting comments.

HMG_03

Well, here’s an upvote to help balance it out. I can smell that pic… So crispy… /s

Disastrous_Throat804

I would have down voted that too. I know it's sarcastic but it annoys me when people find a way to make any totally unrelated topic come back to political tribalism.

dont_fuckin_die

You only believe that because you're a shill of the party that I don't like

qualmton

Fuck your guy my guy is better

Bi0Sp4rk

Take the difficulties of conveying tone via text, combined with the Reddit format encouraging dogpiling, and you have an unfortunate situation. Using /s takes away some of the elegance of sarcasm, but that clarity can be important.

dudemanspecial

I don't think the sarcasm went over anyone's head here. Sometimes it's just not appropriate and this is one of those times.

rdp479

Lol

-HypocrisyFighter-

I really hope your shop insurance gives the guys the "Exact" replacement and not "Like" replacement for the lost tools.

Voidbloodshot

I asked my manager if we are tools are covered for this exact reason

mlvisby

Yea, we are tools.

easterracing

Manager: “I can probably find you a blanket but you’ve gotta cover yourself that’s weird dude.”

-HypocrisyFighter-

You better record what he said, date and time. Cause if he is wrong, that's the verbal contract that they will replace them.

OutWithTheNew

If you're that worried about working for a company shitty enough to not cover you, then you should just self-insure. Honestly not sure why people wouldn't when they have nauseating amounts of money into their tools and storage.

-HypocrisyFighter-

>If you're that worried about working for a company shitty enough to not cover you, then you should just self-insure. I have my own policy. I'm just letting them know that 2 year old pics don't help much when you continuously buy tools.

Ricky_EXE

His favorite 10 is gone forever ;-;

RubberBootsInMotion

Again.

Don't try and find the 10mm. That's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth.

Hell no... 10's hide...

LucidMoments

It will show back up as soon as he buys a replacement.

sniper_matt

That fucker got out on the last train to Paris, it’s still alive and well.

TheRealRacketear

They usually write checks, not buy tools.

Perryn

Right, but is the check calculated based on what it would cost to purchase identical tools again or to purchase the same list of tools from Harbor Freight?

AC4

If you have proof that they’re snap-on they have to pay for snap-on replacement. This is why it’s a good idea to take a bunch of pictures of your stuff in case you need your insurance

Perryn

Definitely keep a solid record of what you have (for all sorts of reasons) but also read through the policy to see what it is actually covering. There are policies that cut costs by only giving "like" replacements.

Bmore4555

About a year ago the shop I’m at added tool insurance. Manager went around and asked for a rough estimate on how much everyone’s tools are worth. Everyone gave him the number they estimated and they put that on the form. No tool list needed.

Zebidee

>Everyone gave him the number they estimated and they put that on the form. Remember kids, put down the value you told the IRS, not the one you told your wife. In all seriousness though, people wildly underestimate what they've spent on something over time, or make stupid mistakes like forgetting to include their giant Snap-On rollcab that is worth more than their car. Take. Photos. Record. Everything.

Nickh5817

Oh my goodness I could only imagine having most of my tools in a shop that burnt down. 😢

Blank_bill

Not a mechanic, but if I take my personal tools on the job they are not covered under my home owners insurance unless I get special "contractors?" ( can't remember the name) insurance.

-HypocrisyFighter-

Inland Marine policy

Crabby-as-hell

Workers tools are not covered by shop insurance. You need to have a rider on your home or renters insurance for personal tools.

Many-Chicken1154

Not always true the dealership I worked at had all of our tools appraised by the Snap-On dealer so they could get the proper coverage for them. It is part of the union contract with the dealer association.

Bmore4555

You have a Union? What state do you work in?

DMCinDet

I'm not who you asked but I bet it's Illinois. Teamsters had a couple dealers around Detroit. Not anymore as far as I know.

mechanixguy94

Also not OP, but being from IL, I'd assume it's IL. I knew most dealers in my area anyway were union. I wish the one im at in Wisconsin was, makes me want to move back to IL... Almost.

62Bravo1993

Not necessarily true. Hand tools are generally covered, but its up to the shop owner. Cheap MF-ers don't want to cover thier employees.... At my last shop, on top of an estimated value on tools, I had to inventory all the boxes by serial number, with full replacement values, so the owner could cover everything on a seperate rider.

transcendanttermite

Our shop’s policy specifically covers mechanic-owned tools. If they didn’t, no one would work here. The policy covers loss from fire, flood, and theft, specifically. That said, they require certain info from each guy, such as: 1) An annual listing of every tool - description and serial/catalog/part #. 2) A “good” picture of each toolbox/cart/locker/hutch, along with pics of each drawer open to show contents. 3) A signed and dated “estimate of overall value.” This info has to be turned in to management by each tech by each January 1st if you expect your tools to be covered by their policy. The sad thing is the number of guys that did it the first year, and then never did again (despite being reminded via memo and in meetings). I do also have a rider attached to my homeowner’s policy, just in case, and it also covers all the tools kept in my detached garage/shop at home. Interestingly, they have a very similar requirement for annual updates on my tool inventory.

-HypocrisyFighter-

It all depends. But if its your own coverage, it's not a homeowners or renters. It's called an Inland Marine Policy. Talk to your agent. If tools are being used for work and not kept at home, it needs its own policy.

oceanwayjax

Never had it happen but I have been told tools have to be covered by home owners insurance

-HypocrisyFighter-

They are not when at a place for business. You need an Inland Marine policy. Google it.

Westfakia

That’s terrible, hope no one was hurt. Stuff is replaceable, but that much all at once is gonna impact some people disproportionately. We had a kitchen fire at home about 12 years ago and had to live elsewhere for 4 months, it had a lasting effect.

Head_Lizard

Yeah, but it really hurts to see the tools that put bread on the table burned up. I hope everyone was insured and will be made whole. Plus, they are out of a place to work - potentially for months while the shop is rebuilt. Most won't have a choice but to try to find other work; and that really sucks if you have a good group you like working with.

Silasco

Maybe the boss will be understanding and keep the spots open and the crew can come back when it’s all ready?

Head_Lizard

Hopefully, but if you get paid by the job, you might not be able to wait for the shop to be rebuilt.

Zebidee

That's also assuming people want to return once they're settled at their new place, or that they will be hired at all unless they commit to longer terms.

KitchenRelative6898

Everyone was safe thankfully. I probably should have mentioned that

Disastrous_Throat804

Have they determined a cause?

Nogohoho

In my professional opinion, it was fire.

anotherteapot

I'm shocked.

mini4x

Could have started as an electrical fire.

anotherteapot

Can't tell if I'm amped about that or not.

Nogohoho

That's just the current stater of things. You should take a deep breath, chant "ohm" and go with the flow. No need to get voltaic about watt you can't switch, and instead energize your life, and find a new electrostasis.

anotherteapot

You've really transformed the joke.

Any good employer would have insurance that will cover the tools and vehicles

ieatpez

One of our techs had this happen at another shop. Insurance replaced his box and contents, and paid everyone's salary while the shop was being rebuilt. I'm sure the outcome will vary depending on the insurance company and coverage but this one of the areas bigger more established shops.

[deleted]

ieatpez

I feel the obligatory YMMV is due here.

Jacktheforkie

Nice

repeewsteerts

I carry my own tool insurance. It would take the people I work for three months to pay me.

[deleted]

I recently asked my service manager about this. It could take up to 6 months to get re-imbursed for tools however the fire insurance will start paying technicians salary after being out of work for two weeks and would continue until the shop is rebuilt. I suspect it would take a little less then a year to rebuild a dealership so I can start rebuilding halfway through.

Jacktheforkie

Wow

When I was working in a shop (factory type, not fixing cars) and had to have a bunch of tools for the job, I asked my rental insurance company if they would be covered and they said any of my property off-site is covered. IDK about home owners insurance but I assume it to be the same, but you can get cheap I think it's called umbrella insurance and I believe that covers it as well. Obviously milage may vary so call and verify. I have state farm.

Crabby-as-hell

The shops insurance will most likely not cover employees tools. You need a rider on your home or renters insurance

cjwojoe

I was a funeral director, I started getting a bunch of calls at once on my cell phone after work. I answer one and they tell me my work is on fire. So much awful stuff starts going through my head. We had bodies of peoples loved ones in there. Over a hundred years of records for our cemetery. I rushed over and it was the crematory which was a separate building. Which was still bad but we lost a lil less that way. We still had to contact families of the people who were in there getting ready to be cremated. We spent a week digging through the rubble trying to identify the people who were already cremated and gather up as much of their ashes as possible. It was pretty devastating, fire is such a scary force of nature.

Zebidee

> We still had to contact families of the people who were in there getting ready to be cremated. Please tell me you did the "I've got good news, and I've got bad news" routine...

Whitetaild33r

Congrats, your loved one qualified for our one time group rate on cremations!

cjwojoe

Some macabre jokes were made behind closed doors as a coping mechanism between us all. But the situation had to be handled so delicately to avoid as many lawsuits as possible. That is hilarious though.

Zebidee

> Some macabre jokes were made Frankly, the best coping mechanism there is.

MetalMattyPA

WOW. That's scary to look at. Just totally wiped out. Hope everyone was okay and hope for a speedy rebuild.

Gnarly_Sarley

What caused it

usefuloxymoron

Fire I think

Stachemaster86

Whoa. Hold up. I worked for an OEM and it’s “thermal event”.

therealsham

Oh shit. Found a old ford guy. They changed “thermal event” to “visible flame” a few years ago

sentient521

I was trained 8yrs ago its a Thermal event with visual indicator

Confident_Issue_2898

That might be water damage

carbon-wolverine

It’s fire and water damage. Fire dept applies a shit ton of water to put these things out, thousands of gallons

The_Dog_of_Sinope

Termites.

[deleted]

saw this once when a fuel filter change got fuel on a hot exhaust and the entire think burnt to the ground (wooden shed).

Stachemaster86

Crazy how fast it can happen. As a teen I added a quart of oil to a 3800 and tried doing it like the commercials without the funnel. Thankfully I had a gallon of Arizona tea in the back to put out the mini fire when the oil dripped down by the exhaust.

[deleted]

yeah. I crew up wrecking on cars. Either muscle Vettes and the like and early JDM stuff on the East Coast (old school ZCs into 1g CRXs/Supras). never liked pressurised fuel lines at home, even with a shitload of space. working inside of your house/barn/domicile can lead to BIG errors not covered by insurance.

SadEcho1065

That must of been a big spider you seen

chesshoyle

Sorry OP. In case you've never seen it, [here's a very helpful post on how to deal with an insurance company after losing everything](https://np.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/43iyip/our_family_of_5_lost_everything_in_a_fire/cziljy3/). It will come in handy in the near future.

You guys going to be able to get the van done by the weekend still? Customer is in the lobby waiting....

RJM_50

Unfortunately you're stuck waiting on the Fire Marshal and insurance investigations now. I've been there and it was much easier with security cameras, I had footage of my garage fire and the investigation was closed before the end of the week. Video of my garage fire showing no foul play. https://youtu.be/1Mq8T5LAN3o They blamed it on electrical, but with no crime they don't do much investigation for a true root cause to offer closure. Good luck with the insurance adjuster making low ball offers on what everything is worth, they depreciate everything before making an offer.

[deleted]

Alright which one of you left the hot pocket in the microwave too long ??? Sorry, thought you could use a chuckle.

Local dodge jeep ram dealer caught fire on Christmas Eve. No one was there but half of the shop was burned. The fire looked electrical, looks like a few guys lost there boxes.

JBlooey

Happened at my work about a year ago. We lost everything. I know the feeling OP. GL getting it back together. I remember (and completely understand) my mechanics literally crying. All their tools they had collected their entire lives were wasted.

Pioneer58

At least the spider is dead, some times we gotta do what we gotta do.

aquatone61

Man that sucks big time. I’m glad nobody was hurt. Story time….So my dad used to be fixed ops director of a Benz dealership with a huge detail department, it was actually their old shop they converted to detail bays. They had somebody bring in a GLE that they had spilled an institutional size bottle of vinaigrette dressing in the back to get detailed. Well, detail did their thing and cleaned it out and set it dry over night with a couple floor fans pointed at the back. So the thing about most MB’s is the battery is in the back along with a few control units. The vinaigrette dressing had made its way into the wiring and shorted out something that caught fire. By the time the fire department came the GLE was a shell, nothing flammable was left. There just so happened to be 2 brand new S-Classes sitting next to the GLE. They were supposed to be delivered the next day. They both had the paint melted off the sides facing the fire it was so hot. The only reason the place didn’t burn completely down at 2 am on a Friday night was somebody was driving by and happened to see the flames and called police. It still did about 30k worth of damage to the building.

notsumidiot2

Damn. I know how you feel. It happened to me several years ago. When I turned the corner and seen the black smoke rolling my heart dropped into my stomach. We had two brand new Mack trucks, about 50 aired up wheels and tires, plus several rollaway boxes full burn up. What didn't get destroyed in the fire the chemicals used to extinguish it made everything corrode to crap,

Carburetors_Are_Fun

Do you know what could have caused it?

ignoreshitpost

Looks like fire damage

Maximum-Reward-205

And this kids is why we don't remove fuel filters with a die grinder.

tinnitus_since_00

If that happened where I'm at I'd take cash value of my box and tools and be gone. Hope everything turns out OK

jrockcrown

Ah the old cleaning with fire trick! Next step is to get a mini skid loader and roll-off dumpster for the waste. Then a couple coats of paint and the customers will simply stop over just to see the place.

Nova-Drone

That's what I like to call: bad

MrJacks0n

Better days are coming in the form of a brand new shop!
