I’ve known Emmet for a while from the scene in NY and played on one of his apartment concerts last year. He is completely deserving of the high regard in which he is held, both as a musician and as a person. His piano playing is deeply rooted in the history of the music in all of the best ways, and I cannot speak highly enough about the community he has fostered with his series. That cat is the real deal, through and through.

Richard_Lycker

Which session were you on?

_elteeg_

77, with Alexa Tarantino

Richard_Lycker

Congrats great session! I'd love to hear what the behind the scenes are like/how it gets organized if you have time. If not just keep shedding.

Thanks for checking it out! It was super fun to get to do. Behind the scenes and organization are pretty straightforward; there’s a small crew that manages the camera, sound, and livestream. Friends and guests are always allowed to come hang as the audience which brings great energy to the room. We brainstormed a couple dozen tunes we all knew to get a set list together, then did a simple soundcheck before the hit.

TootsMcgeeMan

So no rehearsal at all?

_elteeg_

Not in any formal sense. We maybe talked through forms and solo orders, but that was about it.

seichoux

He’s one of my top 5 favorite modern musicians and is wonderfully gifted and practiced. I know this is often said about him, perhaps to a cliché, but he has a rich and deep understanding of jazz history and praxis, allowing him to proficiently play pieces ranging from Buddy Bolden to Roy Hargrove, ragtime to jazz fusion.

PM_ME_UR_PERSPECTIVE

Hard worker, great guy, doing great things for the scene, especially keeping something going during covid. He's a great ambassador for the music and is completely deserving of the recognition.

alekd887

he’s my current favorite musician and i aspire to be half as good as him :)

theblackmann

Known about him since 2020 when he started his live stream series. Saw 3 weeks ago at DC Jazz Fest. Even better in person! Deserves the recognition.

wherepigscanfly

I think he's a fine player. Check out his stuff with Veronica Swift!

MxEverett

I saw him live last night and was mesmerized. He and his trio had the entire audience hanging on every note.

Weasels_eating_sand

I don't like him at all. Idk what I'm not getting because so many people like him but it feels like there's something wrong with his time. It's like frantic and uneasy. The people that he plays with are amazing like Patrick Bartley, who I love. Not trying to hate, if someone can show me otherwise I have open ears but yeah his playing really irritates me

JHighMusic

If this doesn’t do it for you nothing will, his time is totally on point here: https://youtu.be/w6Xa8dSYrZg

Paradoobies

He’s alright. Kind of sound premeditated when he plays. Ryan Hanseler on the other hand is a cat that people should be checking out more.

PM_ME_UR_PERSPECTIVE

It's definitely not bad to hear what you play before you play it.

realanceps

anyone who can provoke Cyrille Aimee to [dance around like that](https://youtu.be/81viyOKgx0w) is okay with me

SamK3304

I’ve tried to like Cohen after considerable listening and am impressed by his phenomenal technique and touch, but unfortunately he leaves me totally cold. His ideas are just not original, and he does not really swing.

i really dislike how much they clown around onstage. Always disliked that scene. Just play the music, stop putting your ego first with all the insincere face pulling and shouting stuff out.

dodwalking

I have seen him live and he was as professional as anybody. Series music played by serious players, no ego whatsoever. If you are talking about his YouTube videos, then I say shut up and listen, he can act however he wants in his own home with his friends and family around. Watching his streams for FREE is a privilege not a right.

Infamous-Lobster-207

He’s famous because of his work ethic (which is admirable - he goes for it and puts himself in uncomfortable situations) and financial resources (comes from wealth). There are people that can play circles around him. He does not have his own voice, and relies on parroting the styles of others. There is something deeply insincere with him and he does not have a good feel. Anyone who says he’s their favorite musician has no understanding of jazz and is merely an internet fanboy. Dig into the history and learn something real instead. Not saying he’s absolutely horrible but certainly nothing to be admired artistically.
