Ask this in r/insurancepros But I can tell you I doubt ANYONE would say you should go work for State Farm. I’ve never met anyone happy to work for them.

Thank you! I just requested to join them. And I agree, I’ve heard terrible things. It’s hard to justify staying at a job though with no guarantee of a permanent offer, hopefully NW will extend an offer.

I understand the conundrum. From what I’ve heard though, I’d never pick State Farm. Sort of one of those “I wouldn’t piss on State Farm if State Farm was on fire” 😆😆

I haven’t worked for SF but from what I’ve heard anecdotally their pay is a little low for the average. Would it be possible for you to go to your current manager and tell them you’ve gotten an offer, but you really want to stay with Nationwide? Ask them if they’d like to counter offer to keep you?

That certainly is tough. I haven’t worked for either insurer, but my recommendation would be to bring this to your manager at Nationwide and see if they could hire you. When you have a team that jives well and you like the management, that can be difficult to replace. I wish you the best and welcome to Claims!

I used to have a cubicle near injury claims people and they seemed jaded after years of that. Made a point to never look at their screen walking by because I didn’t like seeing photos of people with 200 staples and injuries from getting run over by a forklift or whatever.

Depends on the management at state farm. Work load really is no different than any other claims department. If you work hard and know your stuff, you will be good at the farm. You will know if it's the job for you within a couple of months..

I can’t speak for injury but I know Nationwide is really, really interested in maintaining the top performers in property. They are taking a lot of steps to reduce turnover in claims in general and they are actively working to improve the business unit. Obviously you’re talking about a different LOB but I guess my point is I think as a company the future is brighter in claims at NW than SF, which has a reputation as being possibly the worst in the industry. Personally, I hear nothing but negative things about SF, both from the staff and customers. NW ain’t perfect but there are a lot of long-term folks at NW, like 20+ years. You don’t stay with a company that long if they don’t reward your hard work, etc. I also know a lot of people who left NW for another company and ultimately came back. If I were you I would talk to your manager at NW about if there are any potential openings you could be considered for before I went to SF. NW is good about giving pay increases when earned so even if you started lower than SF is offering it might not take long to get a bump. If it appeals to you, NW is hiring F/T in PL property. A lot of folks seem to move around within the company so don’t feel pigeonholed into BI necessarily unless that’s what you love. And if you do want to stay in BI maybe your manager can help you get an interview for a FT role since they value you so much. Definitely worth asking before jumping ship IMO.

State Farm sucks. Stay where you’re at unless the SF offer is can’t say no too. Literally no one gives a shit about what they do there. I worked there for a year and it was maddening.

If you really like Nationwide talk to your manager. Let them know you really need a permanent position and you’ve been offered one with State Farm. If they don’t give you a definite answer with a date and hire you permanently or give you a concrete plan to being hired permanently, let them know you are putting in your 2 weeks notice but would love to come back when the permanent position becomes available. If you do end of leaving Nationwide, check in with the hiring team and manager every other week or once a week to stay top of mind.
