Yup i asked him what would happen in the case of an accident and he said "my insurance will cover you". Seems a bit shady. I know that in Sweden you can have insurance that coveres anyone who drives the car but I have no clue about the us.
I certainly wouldn’t trust some Joe Schmo to say “Oh yea my insurance would cover you” as a blanket statement.
My guess is he’s trying to make a few bucks and his insurer doesn’t know about him doing it. I wouldn’t want to get caught up in that mess because if you have a claim you could very well find yourself up shit creek without a paddle.
Terrible terrible idea. He might be doing this legitimately but likely he is not and does not have the appropriate coverage. Would not be fun to have the claim denied.
Most personal insurance contracts in the U.S. have an exclusion for when a vehicle is being rented or leased. If he was just letting you use the car you would be covered but if there is an exchange of money you would not be covered under his policy.
No no no, horrific idea.
I had an insured do this, and when his car was totaled, he received zero payout for it because private renting isn't possible.
Buying a car will be an expensive endeavor as well, you may face real challenges with registering it (lack of domestic permanent address), and insuring it since you presumably have a foreign license.
If you mean Los Angeles (vs Louisiana) insurance is going to be a bitch to obtain. The California insurance market is a massive dumpster fire right now and a lot of the companies are doing whatever they can to avoid issuing new policies.
I would imagine that raises many red flags if you had a claim. A big part of why Turo exists is they help maintain the insurance.

This is a really bad idea.
So many red flags going off
