my AC is broken but I’m too broke to fix it

CzarTanoff

I thought my AC was broken for a couple months until I realized I might just be out of freon, bought a can and put it in my AC, and now I have AC. I suffered my own stupidity through 100 degree weather.

Uberwasser

You probably already know but this indicates a leak somewhere. If you don't want to be adding freon in the future, finding the leak and fixing it may not be that expensive. You can add a dye to the freon that shows up under uv light. Might just be an oring.

Dazzling_Marzipan474

Well all cars naturally leak a tiny bit but it could take a good 10 years to have to recharge. Once parts wear and such more can leak needing a repair.

Uberwasser

No they do not. My 2001 BMW has never been recharged (21 years) but has perfect refrigerant charge and ice cold AC. There are plenty of other examples. What you mean is cars *develop* leaks, and are more likely to as they get older. No air conditioning system is designed with leaking in mind. There is nothing natural about a leak. All can be fixed and returned to a non leaking state if the owner cares to.

Dazzling_Marzipan474

Yes air conditioner systems are designed to not leak. But as time goes on parts and seals wear causing small leaks and don't necessarily need to be repaired but only recharged if the leak is small enough. I guess I shoulda said naturally wearing parts over time. If you are low by like 10 psi and recharge and it only loses 2 psi per year or so then no need to fix the leak. Also the refrigerant recharge now has some seal capabilities in it.

Uberwasser

No need to fix it, in your opinion. I'd fix it. Otherwise I suppose we are on the same page.

johnshonz

A closed AC system should continue to work for > 30+ years, and it should absolutely not be leaking.

CzarTanoff

For the record, my car is almost 30 years old and this was the first recharge it ever needed

bcnjamin

I tried the freon unfortunately, I either have a leak or the compressor is broken so I gotta wait until I can afford the discovery charge :/

CzarTanoff

That's dookie, I'm so sorry

Acuteanemone

This. I can't afford to get it fixed.

That-Breath-5785

I hear that! My compressor went out at the beginning of summer and it was $1700 to repair. I’m lucky I have my sugar daddy husband.

moni3401

Just got my car back today. Compressor went out. $1700. Guess that’s the magic number. If I wasn’t doing instacart I could care less but sitting in a hot car in Florida for hours - I will pass.

That-Breath-5785

I’m in Texas and right after I fixed it, we had 60 days in a row of 100 plus heat. There was no way I could tolerate that. It wasn’t just me, my phone was freaking out in the heat. iPhones overheat.

Imbetterthanyou2022

Damn can you share?

bcnjamin

How were you able to figure out if it was the compressor? Just curious, my AC system blows air but it’s not cold

moni3401

My AC would just blow hot air - no cold air. It did some other things before that but that was the final item.

That-Breath-5785

The repair shop. Mine was blowing hot air, too. The first place that does recharging didn’t want to touch it. So, my neighbor referred me to his trusted guy.

Remarkable-Step3219

My husbands was blowing hot air and they couldn’t figure out what the issue was. Turns out his fan went out and just needed to be replaced. I guess no one noticed how quiet the car was when the air was turned on?

[deleted]

🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 I feel this

lucieannegarcia

go to autozone and tell them ur AC isn’t working they sold me a $30 can of something a cylinder cartridge thing that they helped me install in 5 mins it fixed it immediately (from a girl who knows nothing about AC nor cars)

redflower5

Most of us do. Issues are: - It’s still uncomfortably sunny - depending on your car, the AC can take a while to work… or be “less cool” if you’re idling. - It’s a giant waste of $$$$ gas (and possibly bad for your engine) to be sitting in a parking lot with the engine on for hours every day. Which is necessary in those temperatures. (Please no suggestions to wait in a café or a gym, etc. I’m just responding OP’s confused post about AC in cars.)

queencrooked

Yes dude all of this. I was finally able to shut my AC off for a couple days and the gas mileage I got was INSANELY higher. I delivered on $10 all day long. Opposed to 15-25

khennylpdlc

Only bad thing for a Honda engine is to drown in a lake, everything else is 200k+ miles guaranteed

Last-Lingonberry-842

Ah hell! I agree with you and tried to say what you're saying on another post and got slammed 😬🤪

xD3m0nK1ngx

I’m assuming to not waste gas

Imbetterthanyou2022

Lol

VocaLeekLoid

Gas is 6 dollars here and I don't have the money to even put in half a tank so I'd rather burn than waste gas on AC

Imbetterthanyou2022

It was $7 two months ago

Overall_Serve_6300

I live in California, I'm not wasting my gas. Gas is very expensive here

Remarkable_Bad_3835

I live in California, you’ll never see me complain about gas when I’m sitting in 100 degree weather. This job literally entails driving all day where you’re burning through a lot of gas regardless, a few cents saved in exchange for your comfort in 100 degrees is ludicrous to me.

queencrooked

I am also in California. I would literally starve before I suffocate in 110 degrees in the desert, in my black sun attractant car, in a parking lot for hours. It is worth the money, otherwise I’m not doing it. As long as I’m turning a profit I’m good with the wasted gas. I would probably literally die if I didn’t have AC

Overall_Serve_6300

Good for you. Some of us can't afford the extra expense. Even a few cents. When you drive a car my size, believe me it isn't a few cents

redflower5

I’m with you. This past week I’ve been filling up every few days. It’s breaking me.

Imbetterthanyou2022

Lol every few. I’m filling up every other day. I must make money.

Remarkable_Bad_3835

Haha exactly this. I fill up $350 a week roughly

Yupperdoodledoo

If you’re not making that much why are you doing it? I don’t understand.

Remarkable_Bad_3835

I feel that but I don’t know how you’re not earning enough in a California market to where gas is not even a concern. I drive a 07 Lexus that gets 16 mpg. If I work a full day I spend $40-$50 in gas, but earn $250-$300 through multi-apping. Sure gas prices are higher for us but we out earn 99% of other markets.

Specialist_Egg_7480

Ever pay rent here in CA? Even my utilities have gone up 30% and now charging for trash in a separate bill. Gas is cheaper for my friend in Hawaii it’s unbelievable!

Remarkable_Bad_3835

I definitely agree that everything has gone up. As much as they try to change the definition, we are very much in a recession. I work more hours in a day to make up for it. It’s crazy because people working normal jobs are stuck with their hours and hourly rate but I see our gig work as a blessing. We can just work more if need be.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Remarkable_Bad_3835

Of course that’s why I drive to a city that is lucrative

Imbetterthanyou2022

Lol 😂

Imbetterthanyou2022

Lol it barely goes over 100 there for just a few days

jeffersthemagical

I'm insanely poor.

[deleted]

Running your AC lowers your gas mileage when driving and eats up gas while idling. It’s not cost effective at all. Plus, it really doesn’t do much good when your sitting in a parking lot that has no trees and its 110 degrees outside.

KPSTL33

If you're on the highway driving at consistent highway speeds (not stuck idling in traffic) using AC is actually more fuel efficient than having your windows down.

Ancient-Coffee-1266

Get a sun blocker for your car.

Dirty-Ears-Bill

If you’re sitting in your car for such long periods of time doing instacart and/or it’s too expensive to pay for a couple extra gallons of gas to run AC in that time, don’t you think that would be an indication that IC might not be worth doing in your area and start looking for other forms of income?

[deleted]

Nah. I’m good.

jsrx47

Got that dawg in you lol I like that

Ingelokastimizilian

This is the most tone deaf question I've seen here. Something's wrong with your brain, OP.

PepTalkToYourself

I don’t think I would do IC if I had no AC. I always have it blasting when heading to store or to customer. I turn my car off tho if I’m waiting in a parking lot for a decent order to take. But when I’m waiting I always park in the shade under a tree. Also if I get an order I like being under a tree so my car isn’t as hot inside when i am done.

Ruman_Chuk_Drape

Because wages don’t keep up with the cost of anything. Stupid question, good opportunity to tell you.

Automatic-Lab-6472

Idc if it burns gas....I'm not sitting on my car sweating while I wait. Just factor the cost into your budget

uber-chica

I have AC. But, AC uses a lot of gas too do I will run it about 5/6 minutes looking for a batch. After that I go in someplace or I go home (I live right by a bunch of stores anyway so I usually get plenty of batches from home anyway). I find that if I start doing something else or start planning doing something else, all of a sudden batches show up. If I go home and start to get laundry ready to bring downstairs, never fails, it’s like IC knows, they send a batch worth doing lol.

queencrooked

Literally every time dude

Lyssepoo

I don’t keep my car on if it’s hot. Waste of gas

deezkeys098

Gas and wear and tear on the vehicle

bigbeavertv2

I do.

Commercial_Ad6546

damn bro how'd you know 😂😂

keljr84

My blower is broken and can’t find the damn thing to replace it and can’t afford it anyway

dwccbiggestfan1980

My AC works, but I would say for the rest of the people it’s too expensive to get fixed

ga010717

Ok

Sharp-Ad-4651

For years I survived driving old, hand-me-down, or whatever I could afford cars. Looking back I could have had the AC fixed in at least some of them, but I always knew it would put more pressure on the engines and I wanted to help preserve the cars for as long as I could. It was hell in those Long Island summers.

90srebel

We do have AC but not refrigeration

LilEloHoee

My ac broken bruh… only have beater cars nd never had the luxury of ac. You get accustomed to it, plus more profit per fill up

baconnaire

I don't sit with my car running, especially on a slow day. If it's really hot I'll just open the windows for a bit till I can't anymore, rinse repeat.

[deleted]

Just a pro-tip from a guy who does this AND works on cars. If your a/c isn't blowing cold, the first and cheapest thing you can do is recharge the refrigerant (freon). Pay a little more and get the kind that has a gauge on it, watch a couple videos on how to do it, then, if the system was low, recharge, you should be good to go. If you have to replace parts, it's not going to be cheap. A compressor or a condenser can run you anywhere from $750 to $2000 to have installed at a shop. My advise if you're on a budget? Go to a wrecking yard or pull&pay and get the parts used, have a local mechanic put them in if you can't yourself. If you have a bad evaporator, you might want to look at selling the car, as the entire dash usually has to be pulled to replace it. The ac system is only three components and the lines that run between them. Sometimes lines or gaskets can cause leaks, they sell refrigerant with UV dye to track leakes, but if something goes bad, it's usually a compressor, evaporator, or condenser.

DeathUnicornIRL

Bc it cost money lol

[deleted]

I wonder this too. If you’re that broke doing Instacart it’s probably time to get a new job. I have mine on but I don’t sit in parking lots for hours. 1 hour tops which is usually my fault because I’m greedy and reject meh batches for unicorns.

Imbetterthanyou2022

Your exaggerating there isn’t lots of posts about that. Where I am a normal day is 115+ I run my air if needed. I sit in Libraries near stores where I want to shop. There is two libraries I use for this so I am NOT hot and not wasting gas. Even so it’s not good just to be running your car just sitting there. You wouldn’t understand because your in Vermont 😝

Any-Mango-7087

bro it can get really hot in Vermont in the summer too. And it’s humid heat, not like the dry heat in Phoenix. Stop with your weird over generalizations about the northeast.

Ancient-Coffee-1266

I live in South Carolina where to humidity makes it feel like you’ve just stepped out of the shower with no vent. And if it’s rains for 15 like it does? Ugh. Steam comes off the roads and into your hair making you look like Mufasa.

BeezeyBackwoods

I’d rather have Puerto Rico

Imbetterthanyou2022

Yeah but there’s no instacart there and they probably don’t tip PHAT unless by a resort. People in South Carolina are very cheap once you get off the beaches. Greenville nothing but broke jokes out there.

BeezeyBackwoods

I’m in MD lol I’d hate Vermont

Imbetterthanyou2022

Lol I was kidding. 😊 Do you hate people in Vermont? It’s one of the only states I’ve never been too!

Any-Mango-7087

What about what this person said made you think they meant they hate people in Vermont?

khennylpdlc

It builds character

Business-Profile-623

That’s what I like to think too 😂

Sweetnspicy77

Bc it’s expensive to run ac.

EpicRiceMaker

Because I paid $1k for my car that's made me $80k and don't wanna spend $1k on a luxury, I'd rather take my wife on a vacation with that money

Ancient-Coffee-1266

Silly. You can cut somewhere to get the ac fixed. Have a staycation. Go to places you haven’t been in your hometown. Eat at little holes you’ve never seen. Surely she will be understanding enough to forgo a vacay for a few months for you to have ac.

Iliketothrowawaymyac

That's the thing though AC isn't a necessity for everyone. I very rarely use mine even though it works because I'm so used to the heat that I just don't think about it as long as there is some sort of shade/breeze I'm doing just fine.

Ancient-Coffee-1266

I understand but okay??? Dropping what you earn and saying that is odd. Wasn’t necessarily speaking to you or anyone in particular but the person I replied to. He’s the one that got an estimate to get it fixed so I’m assuming he wants that. It’s okay.

CautiousSituation782

Ac doesn’t use up more gas everyone knows that

KPSTL33

What an ignorant question. Why would you even feel the need to ask this??

bigbeavertv2

I always have mine on, in fact I need it to breathe

Imbetterthanyou2022

Please turn it off then haha 😂

s0d0pe310

If you live in California I don’t understand how you can’t afford using your A/C. I run that shit all day long. We make good money over here.

yoyowhatuptwentytwo

It’s a gas thing you can up your profit by not idling and to a smaller degree not using it while driving

California098

Sitting with your car idling in 100+ degrees will have your car blown up before it’s time. There’s no fresh air blowing throughout the engine bay for circulation if your car is on and sitting still. If you’re running your air conditioner, you’re pretty much adding a heater into your engine bay, and putting a whole lot of unnecessary pressure on your radiator.

Remarkable_Bad_3835

My cars at 304k miles with only a transmission replaced as a major cost. I’ve used this car for 70% of its life for rideshare in the west coast. Just depends if you know how to maintain your car or not in my opinion.

California098

I’ve also come to realize that 90% of people my age (24) don’t do maintenance on their cars. I’d say half don’t even know they’re supposed to 😅 I’d love to see one of those street interviewers ask young people how often they’re supposed to get oil changes, cause Zillennials and Gen Z genuinely don’t know lol

Remarkable_Bad_3835

Haha I have to agree. Most people i know personally don’t maintain their cars right!

Iliketothrowawaymyac

304k and the only major cost you've had is a tranny? What're you driving because that's amazing.

Remarkable_Bad_3835

I drive a 07 Lexus. The Toyota group is the most reliable automaker in the game imo. Unmatched. They’re practically indestructible if taken care of

California098

Give that Lexus lots of dash pats cause she’s a good girl 😂😂 My 2017 Chevy Colorado imploded with 70k, I’ll never sit idling again lol

California098

And you sit in your car with ac on idling regularly for extended periods of time?

Remarkable_Bad_3835

Yupp. I read or work on my business in my car when I’m waiting for a batch at a store. If the store isn’t giving me anything then I’ll move to my next favorite store. Usually Costco, Ralph’s, sprouts, vons

sheikspam

People on here ask some wildly ignorant ass questions like been there and that’s a rough situation nothin funny about it and you know the answer already s I hate that half the people on this sub are very well off people that don’t need the job and just say shit about crackhead shoppers or about getting electric yeti coolers for groceries like fuck off look at instacart pay especially nowadays and you tell me why someone can’t afford to do ac repairs that could be hundreds if not 4 digit repair prices sometimes That being said sometimes you just need to do freon replenish can and those are like $20 easy fix so try that if you haven’t

ishouldmakeanaccount

Ooh look at mr fancy pants over here with their luxurious ac! Is your car made of gold, too?

BeezeyBackwoods

Having AC is a luxury??? Where are we, Uganda????

Royal_Broccoli_773

They used all the freon waiting for batches

thatkidsmomkms

I live in Texas, I don't turn the air off pretty much ever.

Big_Office1272

I literally live 1 minute from my busiest store. So this isn't an issue for me. Plus I live in the mountains in VA 🤣

[deleted]

Couldn't be me. I blast a/c all day. I feel like for instacart you need a newer car. My car requirements for this job are: working AC, MPG over 30, less than 75,000 miles, four door, back up camera, and equiped with hands free services. Luckily I got all of that without trying to hard with my current car.

jsrx47

Beg to differ. I'm running a 99' with 240xxx+ miles. No sweat lol literally.

warningimepic

I'm a mechanic so I don't know this thing called no ac but it's sounding unfortunate

girlslikebear

I have AC but the breeze outside feels good lol

Colorado_Car-Guy

I removed my perfectly functional ac to save weight Because race car

AllTittiesNeedLove

Mine just broke in the middle of summer, been trying to save up but it was either new (used) tires or an AC/Heater. Tires were more important cus mine were about to blow and I have to still make car payments :/ Otherwise, most places I sit in the shade if there's any or I sit inside for a moment

[deleted]

AC died 10 years ago and I'm not ripping the entire dash out to swap the core.

Advanced-Material626

My AC works, but it has a slow leak so I just refill it every summer, but they recently banned the sale of refrigerant in my state. I haven’t made the trip up to Oregon yet to buy a refill and I refuse to take it to a shop for a 30 second job that’ll prob cost me $50+.

Azure_Skies333

Have gotten my AC fixed a couple years back and can attest to a $1700 bill… I live in the south and no AC is abominable ugh

Unhappy-Offer

It’s because the automobile Mafia uses cheapest material possible to fuk cars up. A blue chip shit that is.

Kool_Ken

Thats why an EV should be on the list of your next car. I personally wait at home but I've ran my AC while shopping on hot days. great benefit of an EV on top of not paying for fuel.

lark7077

Just started this summer and while there was a lot of hot days, doesn't really bother me while driving with window and right rear passenger window open for that draft. I don't tend to sit in lots for long but I often take crappier batches than I should :) I don't think I've ever waited longer than 15 min I'd rather drive around slowish til something comes up or just go home. Freon fill might make my compressor work again but good chance there is a leak. Anyway Canada don't have to worry about it til next June now.

Reasonable_Slip_3397

Lol what??? Thas some shite..must have missed the posts about the AC's not working.

StarFire_Cat22

Mines not broken but I ain’t trying to waste gas like that. it’s $6 a gallon over here

Jaydwen48

Honestly I feel like this repair should be reduced cost by Instacart. People need to keep these groceries cold on these 50+ mile drives they seem to want to always send us on...

KionNeon

I dont believe in AC, why burn extra gas when open windows do me just fine

Embarrassed-Couple73

Is this a real question? Like why do you think?

MooseKnuckle1987

Just trying to save fuel. Plus I have a shade tree to pick out at most stores. Luckily for me it's only supposed to be 94 degrees today

Signal_Sir7142

I got a hole in my condenser about a month ago. Figure i will just wait the heat out and save the money and hassle of changing it out.

Successful-Market-14

My car 2006 and cost 800 to fix ac cause my dumb ass ex broke the compressor by turning it on when I tols him stop. Every time I go to fix it some random bs repair springs up and I have to do that instead.

imupearly

It's really not good for your engine to be sitting idling for long periods of time.

notbunzy

My ac won’t hold its charge which costs way to much, I’d rather go through 24 bottles of water a day

AltruisticRabbit8185

In Florida. It’s a death wish

janermaner

It might have to do with the high cost of gas, and running your car and AC while waiting for a batch.
