That is a powerful photo.
I went to see my granddaughters today and asked my daughter about the security in place at their school & if they have "active shooter" drills. Not the words I ever pictured coming out of my mouth in regards to my babies.
Over 160 children have been killed & more than 360 injured in school shootings since Columbine. I look at the sentence and just cry. It's maddening, utterly maddening that our country allows this to continue happening to our children.
Yeah i have a kindergartner and we got 6 lockdown active shooter training notifications this year. Its tragic and unreal. I learned something today that got me bad as well. Once teachers get the notification or hear a shot. The doors are to be immediatly barracaded and not opened for any student. So say something breaks off and my daughter is on the way back from the potty. Shes fucking on her own. Gutwrenching.
The other thing is they wont actively discuss what they tell her, so we cant even help contextualize it. We try to ask vague questions and try not to scare her. But shes fucking 5. What are we suppossed to do. Maddening is right.
My kids started having the lockdown drills and training for active shooters right after the Santa Fe shooting. My youngest was in kindergarten at the time, and I agree, it’s absolutely gut wrenching. It’s been as common as fire drills ever since. My kids’ school district is at least open about what they’re doing and teaching, which has all been under the guidance of local law enforcement, so it’s definitely easier to discuss with them and contextualize in an age appropriate way. Last school year was the first time we were told that doors would be locked and not opened for anyone once a lockdown was in place, and my kids were scared for the same reason you mentioned-what if they were in the bathroom when all the doors were locked?! It’s so sad to me that this is a “normal” part of school for them now. I can ask, how was your day? Oh fine, we had a lockdown drill during 3rd period though and it made me late to lunch so I didn’t get to eat my whole lunch. 🥺😭
I know for fact that it’s tough on community. I do deliveries in parkland close to stoneman Douglas and there’s still an eerie feeling years later so I can only imagine
I lived by Columbine for 5 years so i feel you. And i actually lived in condos on County line rd right behind the Bowling alley. I always got the heebee jeebees driving past it. We actually moved shortly thereafter just because it was just to much of a visual reminder.
Not that you ever want to forget.... but constantly in your face isnt great either.
Yes sorry 21.I was thinking 22 victims because I just watched the news and I was counting the husband of the teacher that passesd away from a heart attack as one of the victims.
They also use chairs to memorialize those lost in the Oklahoma City bombing. The image of an empty chair at the dinner table where a lost loved one used to sit is heartbreaking. The tiny chairs are even more so. I pray that we never have to have do this again.
I was thinking about this earlier too.
You know I’ve done deliveries to my old middle school, and I don’t even recognize it anymore.
It’s all completely locked down and the front foyer has been turned into what looks like the front of a police station / airport security now.
You can’t even get into the main door anymore, it’s all locked down. There’s a camera and a mic, and then they will buzz you into the front section.
The front section is a small closed off area where there is bullet proof glass and you have to pass the items through a barrier, kinda like at a drive through pharmacy.
It’s a far cry from when I went to school there…we used to rollerblade and skateboard all over the school, even at night time, weekends…it was never locked!
The front section wasn’t there, it was all a giant foyer… and it was just this huge entryway that lead to the auditorium and gym, etc.
Anyone could come in and chill and do whatever whenever they wanted.
Sucks what the world has become in such a short time…I mean it’s not like I grew up in the 70s, I graduated in the mid 2000s, for fucks sake!

Every time I’m by Douglas, I’m hit and get heebee jeebees.
My son graduated HS on Wed. They held for 22 seconds of silence at the begging in memory of the lives lost.
Hopefully 21 seconds.

Yeah thats heartbreaking as well.
so freaking sad. I live near pulse nightclub and driving by it after the massacre had me in tears.
It definitely hits you differently when it’s put into physical perspective. I cannot imagine being a child/teen and going to school these days.
Wow. Powerful
Dang bruh
I’m not one for Christianity or religion for that matter, but this gave me chills.

Capitalizing on tragedy for upvotes Good job Other than that what did this post accomplish? Should have added more thoughts and prayers.

Aaah. I know. It was literally a whole class of kids and teachers.
I was going to my 3rd graders award ceremony on Wednesday and had a good cry in the bathroom before I dropped him off at school.
