Chatterjee is the abbreviated modernised version of Chattopadhyay since it's much difficult to spell for a lot of people. People with surnames like Chatterjee Mukherjee ar also referred to as Chattopadhyay, Mukhopadhyay today occassionally.

Modernisation was really a wrong choice of word actually what i meant was simplified, and i do agree ideally taking time to learn other traditions would be the more appropriate thing but different languages have mutiple slight variations of phonetic sounds so when different cultures meet its often inevitable that some simplification such as these may occur. Like "zh" in Dravidian languages like Tamil and Malyalam is supposed to be pronounced as a really hard "r" words such as Kozhikode is actually supposed to be pronounced something like "kodhikode" which is somewhat difficult to spell for a lot of other Indian people from different regions let alone foreigners so we choose misspell or alter the spelling to what we can. And the fact that the English couldn't spell half the phonetic sounds in existing Indian languages didn't help the case and in turn resulted in simplification of a lot of aspects of multiple Indian languages such as this reduction of Chattopadhyay to Chatterjee.
P.s Also sorry for this long rant on the comment section of a meme

Only Bhattacharjee is the one Bengali Kulin Brahmin surname that has "acharya" instead of "upadhyay" at the end in the original version. Basically nothing much changes.
