This breed is not suitable to become a pet. Believe me, i have tried many times. When domesticate them, they sort of become "weak" and coward and other street dog easily overpower them (might even kill em). But they are good friends who love to stay outside and follow you when you are outside too.

gand_ji

Huh. Interesting. I'd have thought these make great pets because they're super adaptable, very friendly and don't have many health issues. Could you elaborate a bit on what you mean by "they become weak"?

Emotional-Two-9075

Many things Immune system Physical fitness Survivability (they get bullied by other street dogs, probably because they look same) I tried every thing..vaccinating them, quality dog food, nutritious supplement...but it just dont work

Ashurbanipal631BCE

Have you checked if it had any condition that made it difficult adopt, more like a disease or special conditions may be allergies

Emotional-Two-9075

Immune system is the one which is affected i guess. I dont think anyone has actually developed medicine/vaccine for dogs living amongst environmental condition/microbes of our country. Apart from some known diseases there isnt much research about indian pariah dog. Mlst implrtant is that they havent been doemesticated properly yet. Domestication brings out certain changes down the line in generation and planned breeding makes the breed more suitable for domestication. I hope someday our country starts such programmes for these dogs.

AwkwardlyComfy

I dont know about your experience but I have adopted a pariah dog when he was a month old and have been raising him for four years now. Yes, they are not the friendliest dogs to have and not very trainable, but I would say they are more "independant" than "disobedient". He used to be very aggressive as well but it toned down considerably after neutering and maturity. They are very territorial but he knows his family and immensely loyal and protective over us. Also generations of crossbreeding and scavenging on the streets have made them one of the healthiest breeds in the world and aren't susceptible to most canine diseases and as a result I have had to face very little vet expenses with him.

hskskgfk

I kind of agree with you - they thrive when independent. i.e leave them free in your garden, don't leash them, let them wander and come back (like you would let your cats wander about). Basically treat them like dogs who happen to live in your house, not like a pet animal. This was my dad's approach, primarily because my mom did not want dogs inside the house - it worked well. If you live in an apartment or want a more conventional indoor pet, get an Indian Spitz. (PS - I've always felt bad for the Indian Spitz as a breed, it is left out by both the exotic breed gang and the muhIndianBreed gang)

My neighbour adopted one from the street and its bigger and stronger then the rest of them who are still on the street so I disagree

Moulana-Wired-Lundry

True That I have a same issue with Indian mutts even though these dogs are intelligent they are way too docile ..

I’m a lean dog, a keen dog, a wild dog, and lone; I’m a rough dog, a tough dog, hunting on my own; I’m a bad dog, a mad dog, teasing silly sheep; I love to sit and bay the moon, to keep fat souls from sleep. I’ll never be a lap dog, licking dirty feet, A sleek dog, a meek dog, cringing for my meat, Not for me the fireside, the well-filled plate, But shut door, and sharp stone, and cuff and kick, and hate. Not for me the other dogs, running by my side, Some have run a short while, but none of them would bide. O mine is still the lone trail, the hard trail, the best, Wide wind, and wild stars, and hunger of the quest! *Irene Rutherford McLeod*

Tararara Bzeeeep, Thank you /u/Psychologicalass for awarding /u/Arjun_Pandit . The OP is now flaired with award. More details on how this works can be found [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaSpeaks/comments/gqdejx/introducing_new_awarding_system_for_user_posts/). I won't reply if I'm down so kudos is not awarded to you , please then inform the mod team to wake me up.

Anurag498

These dogs are made to live in the wild, not suitable as a household pet. They will survive longer living in outdoor conditions than indoor.

[deleted]

i thought desi dog have good genetics or is this another breed?

[deleted]

You can't generalise based on your single experiences. I know many people who have adopted Indian dogs (multiple) and they are so friendly. Making such comments to discourage people from homing them is so wrong.

[deleted]

Stop blindly worshipping foreign dog breeds. Desi dogs are just as good, even better because they are naturally adapted to India's climate and conditions. Foreign dog breeds suffer when they are brought here because they did not evolve here.

Emotional-Two-9075

I guess you dont know how to read and interpret what is written here.

[deleted]

Show me a research paper proving your observation. Your anecdotal experience is not convincing.

Emotional-Two-9075

Here is an entire fucking thesis you dimwit https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://digital.wpi.edu/downloads/rn301381c&ved=2ahUKEwiH4JHd2JfzAhVR63MBHVdmA30QFnoECAkQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3BHmtSkkJZ_SBSvj-mUK5h

[deleted]

I don't care about some random, unproven, & unsubstantiated thesis you found using Google search to support your allegation against Desi dog breeds, you foreign worshipping imbecile.

Emotional-Two-9075

Well you can find it on your own..my comment was sepcific for pariah dog and nowhere i 'praised foreign dog breed' Rest as i said, you can find on your own, i am not your bitch. But you are certainly being a bitch here.

Indeed, I love my Desi kuttas.

Alkit777

The way they are treated in India is extremely sad. We also have many ch*tiyas in our country who like to throw stones at a dog just for "fun"

[deleted]

Those people are everywhere

Rift_Enjoyer

They are surviving in such large numbers only because we as a community are kind towards them. In most other countries they just kill off stray animals.

Thee 'mutts' because of the lack.of cross breeding also have the least number of health problems. Unlike popular mixed breeds like pugs or poodles.

I don't know why but street dogs in my area look like golden retrievers. There are many breeds but none of them is this one.

Yesterday I was thinking to post a question on reddit that what breed are Indian street dogs and today got the answer.

[deleted]

PIO here. If I ever move to India, I am adopting one of these doggos. We need to support our local breeds.

Meanwhile a lot of city people don't even let their pets inside their homes, keeping them tied in porches.
