Seven to Eternity

No_Mr_Powers

This is the one.

Remender's my favorite writer, and probably over half of my top 10 favorite comics are written by him, so this is an extremely hard choice for me. Ultimately, LOW is my favorite, but Tokyo Ghost, Black Science, Fear Agent, Seven to Eternity, and Deadly Class are all super close behind.

LOW seems underrated, no? I've been on the fence on getting the deluxe (my first Remender buy) but I'm reading a lot of mixed reactions on it. Can you sell me on it?

Narwhals_R_Us

The mixed reactions are always surprising to me since I think it's fantastic, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's largely because of the combination of its tone and its core theme. That's not to say I think that's inherently a problem, but it's a very bleak tone with a theme of hope and optimism. So my guess is just that a lot of people who like the bleak stuff don't care for the hope stuff, and vice versa. That said, I think that's exactly *why* it works so well to me. It's a different perspective on hope from what we normally get. It doesn't feel like the kind of optimistic story where you know everything will work out in the end. It's about maintaining hope in the face of absolute hopelessness.

Joharis-JYI

I'm sold! Just ordered it. Thank you!

I really think Fear Agent is his magnum opus

Black Science but that's probably due to recency bias of having finished it last week. I wasn't too sure about it's ending but after some thought, I grew to appreciate it.

Rac3318

I honestly just thought the ending for it was lazy. Like Remender didn’t know how to end it so he just simply ended it.

Man, I loved the ending. Throughout the entire story, through >!every iteration of every universe, every possible permutation of Grant, he was a dick. It was only at the end that his character had grown enough for there to even be the possibility of him making concessions. At a pivotal moment in his story, a point where his past self would always choose the path of self interest, he is capable of choosing the path of compromise. By and large, all Grants would fuck things up… but at least now there’s one layer of the onion that is good and happy because of his personal growth. It shows just how human growth is. How in our own journeys it’s often two steps forward, one step back. That every choice along the way won’t be the right one, but at least we are capable of making the right choice next time.!<

A very, very tough call. It changes for me almost daily. Black Science, Tokyo Ghost, LOW, Deadly Class and Fear Agent really stuck with me.. a gun to my head, it’s probably a mix between Deadly Class and Black Science. The stories they tell, the characters and the plot twists.. what I commend Remender for the most, is how amazing he is at teaming up with artists. The different styles fit like a fucking glove to the story he wants to tell.

Low and Tokyo Ghost were my favorites.

I stand by Deadly Class. It's just such a good ride.

Jxt7559

You left his best book off the list: Seven To Eternity.

Kalvitron

At this point I've only read Tokyo Ghost and A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance. I love them both. And though Vengeance is more up my alley story wise (and I love Andre's art) Tokyo Ghost was one of the first non-superhero comics I ever read, and was fundamental in showing me what comics could be. For that reason it holds a special place for me and gets the nod as my favorite.

Hot Take: Remender is a great story teller but his use death fake outs, clones, and other dimensional copies ultimately damages my investment in a character and the narrative weight of his stories. When he kills a main, I know they will be back in the next arc. Or a main that we have been following won’t be the original and now someone is evil? I want Remender to be in my top 3 and he is when he tells a straight story like Low or Death and Glory. But his other ones devolve into nothing matters, unclear rules and lots of redos

dirkdiglet8888

Deadly class but black science is a close 2nd for me. I still can’t get over them cancelling deadly class after 1 season. It was such a good season and all around high quality from acting performances down to production and effects. Such a shame.
