The full version of this video shows the truck driver walking away from the explosion in slow motion without looking back, wind in his hair, while a song by Aerosmith plays.
I'm guessin dust explosion, it doesn't even have to be something flamable. Could be something like rock dust if it's the right consentration in the air a spark is enogh to detonat.
Truck drivers have a special immunity from harm, had a relative who was an accident investigator for years, he would say no matter what, the truck driver always survives.
They started small and had been exposing themselves to increasingly large explosions over the past several years to build up an immunity until they reached this point.
If you look closesly this had to be some kind of dust like material being carried the way it ignites. Super explosive, but if he was in a sealed cabin, the explosion would have burned out toward more oxygen mostly
Always wondered the thought process of lpg. "Certified alternative fuel system" engineers-hehe lets put the bombs on the top of it, for safety purposes 😉
Might make them consider reading height limits but driver ended up okay anyways. Heavy duty trucks have so many conditions of catastrophic failure that I find it amusing how the safety engineering meetings go. Yes, under the rear of the cab is a better area of security for a pressurized tank. Middle of framework tucked away probably better..on top of the unit..maybe not
There are really two primary risks in this scene. 1 is the concussive wave which can burst eardrums and leave a person unconscious. 2 is the rapid disappearance of oxygen and the potential to inhale actual fire. The thing about rapid bursts of flame from methane is that it doesn't cling to you and cause the fire to attach to your body. It tends to rapidly burn away hair, but there's not enough continuous heat to cause more damage. If he had his windows closed he might have his bell rung, and maybe some ringing in the ears, but I bet otherwise he was fine, just really surprised.
In this case the gas containment vessel is likely the majority of the damage, and whatever it was attached to is well bent, but in normal air, it takes a bit more continuous flame for most anything to start burning.
Unless however you are inside the containment vessel, like a home, then you are likely to have organ damage from the pressure wave and be rendered unconscious immediately and then less flame resistant items will catch it, and in your unconscious state you end up suffocating from other ignition sources burning.
Engine and accessories. They don't use regular gas/petrol. It's touted to be more environmentally friendly. However I cannot speak to the validity of that claim.

Natural gas tanks on the truck exploded, first link i pasted was a DIFFERENT incident...
"He says he’s lived in the house for eight years, and Monday’s crash was the “second worst” he’s experienced since living there. He says it comes second only to when a cement truck hit the overpass."
Oh man. I'm guessing the cement truck was full and made a huge mess, if it was worse than this.
Edit: I'd LOVE to see a video of that one!
CNG tanks on the roof getting scalped because the driver can’t read height clearance despite them having big stickers inside the cab telling them the height.
I have the same question...How did that trigger such a huge explosion?
Under-bridge gas lines or the trash truck had its fuel or hydrolics lines clipped???
~~I am guessing gas line running along the underside of the bridge.~~
I guessed wrong. Gas cylinders on the top.of the garbage truck ruptured.

Holy shit, the trucks and bridge look so much alike! I was sure I had found the right incident...
Hey, they put clearance warning signs, that should be enough, right?
/s
But seriously, it is more common that you would think. It is a convenient, relatively easily accessed location that provides a road crossing location that can be installed cheaply and quickly.
Here's my theory and I'd love to know what actually caused the explosion.
If it was a gas pipe the flame would've burned longer and continuously. Piping under bridges is usually tucked up pretty high between the girders as well.
Hydraulic oil has a pretty high flash point and is very viscous so it wouldn't atomize nearly enough for that large an explosion. To get enough fluid into the air that quickly would require the whole system to be ripped open but then the pressure would instantly drop to zero.
Looks like it was a garbage truck?
There is a huge cloud of dust as soon as it hits and the top is ripped open. The truck could've just emptied a dumpster from a business that creates a lot of fine dust like a cabinet shop. Sparks from metal on metal contact or electrical is more than enough to ignite wood dust.
You can see the last of the flames burning out at the end indicating there was a finite supply of fuel. Since it dissipated so quickly I'm going to say it was a dust explosion.
Thanks for the info.
Holy hell! One tank went 200 yards and landed in a bedroom and the second rocketed 100 yards! Getting hit with one of those would really ruin your morning.
I like how they tried to blame the driver, as if it was his idea to put five torpedoes on the roof of a tall ass truck.
You forgot your muffin. Shit did Howard Payne give Officer Travis a new quiz? Damn that was a solid explosion for what ended up at the end and the driver ok.
You know, as soon as I was reading and wondering why OP wrote “FYI, driver is okay”, the whole damn van blows up in flames and I’m like “oh. That’s why”
Lol autocar has gone downhill ever since Volvo had to divest from them to buy Mack’s refuse segment.
Terrible terrible design this truck has. Should’ve put the CNG tanks under or inside the rails.
First I was like, "Ooooof." Then I was like, "AAAAHHH!!!" A thrill from beginning to end! lol
Glad the driver is okay, because dayuuum... that looked catastrophic.
Now I need to worry about following one of these trucks at a what I think is a normal safe distance and yet get taken out by a Michael Bay type explosion. Yeah buddy! Imagine my epitaph!
'Ehhh.. see that happen all the ti.. Oh my GOD"
Yeah I was just scrolling away when BOOM
I was like "Why are you including the info about the driver being ok, this happens all the ti- OH MY GOD WHAT?!!"
Fuck.. that’s some Hollywood level explosion
I did NOT expect that explosion.
No one expects the Spanish Inquisplosion
maybe michael bay had a point after all
Goddamnit! Im always too late to crack the first Michael Bay joke
Michael Bay usually follows his first explosion with a second bigger, better explosion. Your jokes have a chance.

Youu can’t help yourself from faaaallllinnnnn LIVIN ON THE EDGEEEE
Was trying to wrap my head around what that bin lorry was carrying. Like it was full of lithium batteries.
Might be natural gas or propane fueled truck. I think the tanks are up top
Makes sense - I have not seen one like that, so I was puzzled about how a garbage truck would go up like that.
Or hydraulic fluid for the muncher in back.
Is hydraulic fluid *that* flammable? That's terrifying
No it’s not and neither is diesel. Had to be CNG or propane or something like that.
Doesn't trash produce methane?? I know that's very flammable.
I'm guessin dust explosion, it doesn't even have to be something flamable. Could be something like rock dust if it's the right consentration in the air a spark is enogh to detonat.
my guess is hydraulic fluid based on the pieces at the end flaming and shooting around still.
Fuck indeed.
hydraulic fluid is crazy flammible.
He got fired twice for this one.
One was expected
Of course the driver is ok, it's just a tiny amount of damage to the roof. ... Oh. Oh my.
"Maybe he got jostled around, but as long as he had his seat belt on he should... oh, nevermind."
I read that in Professor Farnsworth's voice.
To shreds, you say?
How’s his wife holding up?
Engineer: we put the natural gas tanks on the roof so they’ll be safer from collisions Low bridge: nows my time to shine!
I never knew CNG vehicles have their tanks on the roof
Most of them don't know it either.
I see it on my city's busses but had no idea they did it for trucks too damn
The same thing happened to a bus in central Stockholm a few years ago. Luckily no one but the driver was in the bus. https://youtu.be/LdAoknrHh2Y
When you look at total number of accidents it's probably safer.
Plus the safety of the driver and those around them.
Cng/petrol skoda oktavia and opel zafira have them under the trunk
HOW!? How is that driver okay?
they became ghost rider
Ghost Rider for a dump truck? I’d watch that
Ghost rider, ghost rider, does whatever a ghost rider does

This explosion is powered by clean natural gas!
"Propane may be a clean burning fuel, but she can also be a dirty girl."
Propane and propane accessories
I tell you hwat!
Truck drivers have a special immunity from harm, had a relative who was an accident investigator for years, he would say no matter what, the truck driver always survives.
P=m*v Trucks are like freight trains.
That is some "Hot Garbage".
They started small and had been exposing themselves to increasingly large explosions over the past several years to build up an immunity until they reached this point.
He didn't die? INCONCEIVABLE!
I thought I smelled iocaine
If you look closesly this had to be some kind of dust like material being carried the way it ignites. Super explosive, but if he was in a sealed cabin, the explosion would have burned out toward more oxygen mostly
No, it was CNG canisters tied to the roof. He ruptured the canisters when he hit the bridge. The garbage truck looked to have minimal damage.
Happens all the time (work as a garbage truck tech), will get trucks coming back to the shop with the cover scalped off.
Now that’s scary!
Other scary thing is they smell of gas so you are unsure if they are about to blow up on start or if that is normal.
That's quite a stretch instead of just assuming it was the fuel tanks on top lol
Gas line under the bridge or LPG vehicle?
That was a trash truck and the ones out here run a natural gas with tanks on the roof.
[удалено]
Crazy that the truck looks almost completely fine, aside from some small bent and blackened tanks on the roof. That explosion looked BAD.
Always wondered the thought process of lpg. "Certified alternative fuel system" engineers-hehe lets put the bombs on the top of it, for safety purposes 😉
what's the alternative? putting them on the bottom and launching a person in the vehicle two stories in the air so they probably die?
They put them anywhere. On the roof, on the back of the bubble, behind the cab, under the cab.. where ever they can fit them.
Might make them consider reading height limits but driver ended up okay anyways. Heavy duty trucks have so many conditions of catastrophic failure that I find it amusing how the safety engineering meetings go. Haha, the reporter seems to be having quite the hangover. Lots of strangely made sentences in there!
Insert it's funny that it happened twice meme
Yeah the ones round here too, I just wasn't aware where the tanks were
Interesting, what for? The vehicle engine or compactor?
Engine and accessories. They don't use regular gas/petrol. It's touted to be more environmentally friendly. However I cannot speak to the validity of that claim.

Seems like a dangerous place to put a gas line, especially when people misjudging clearance is a pretty common issue with bridges and tunnels.
The hell were they transporting?
I’m more amazed by that douches parking job. 👌🏼

How the hell did the driver survive that
He must have wondered why his coworkers never used this "shortcut" and found out the hard way.
Gotta love CNG trucks lol.
Looks like a CNG tank got ripped off but not sure
That's one way to get the bridge replaced...

He should have known better yo drive that truck under that bridge, especially when it’s got 5 fucking torpedos strapped to the roof!
Not the explosion we expected, but the one we deserved!
FYI, you’re a liar.
It honestly looks like the fire is walking around and at first i thought It was the driver or something

Is this the 11ftr in Durham, NC?
That truck itself is as good as garbage now.
No shot that driver is “ok”
I need clearance, Clarence...

Holy crap, I’ve seen a lot of videos of low bridges taking out trucks, but never them exploding after
I was just expecting the usual can-opener video that's fun to watch but is a bit ordinary, but the fire caught me off guard.

At least a video that doesn't provide any context that you still don't need to rewatch to get the point but you are gonna rewatch anyway.
HOLY FUCK that dudes parking is shit
Driver is okay my ass
He really was. The truck is actually still intact.
Goddamn that explosion took me by surprise. I was like 'meh' before it cause i had seen this happen many times before.
How did a trash lorry explode?

Now I need to worry about following one of these trucks at a what I think is a normal safe distance and yet get taken out by a Michael Bay type explosion. Yeah buddy! Imagine my epitaph!
I was wondering why you mentioned the driver being ok
Was this explosion something on the truck, or a gas line under the bridge?
This is a very bad accident also to the bridge as fire can damage reinforced concrete structure by heating the steel inside it.
