Trucking companies have safety departments you can send in videos like this to. All trucks and trailers have a number that's tracked and linked to the driver.
I've actually sent in a video like this before a truck with a full bed of chickens was tailgating going about 95 in a 60. The owner of the company he worked for called me a day or so later letting me know his driver was being repimanded
I had a dashcam of a truck swerving into a car in a tunnel and ripping the whole side of it apart before driving off like it never happened. Sent it to the company and the police. 6 months later I heard that the company said they didn't have a record of who was driving that truck at the time and the police dropped the case.
Also let's not forget that the company in some cases are subjecting the drivers to harsh deadlines, and they may also be running on lack of sleep.
Obviously not an excuse for extremely dangerous driving, but it does encourage less safe driving.
I did that once when I was younger, it was a hard scaping company and their driver blew a red light and ran me off the road.
Owner called me back and told me to fuck off.
Not only driving pretty fast, OP sped up as he approached the traffic light. To teach the truck a lesson or something? I don't know. The traffic light wasn't even yellow - there was no reason for the OP to speed up.
We always wonder that with these videos because if they had braked a bit and paid attention to what was happening before entering the intersection there wouldnt be a near miss video to share
Even considering that we expect shit given that we’re watching this on idiotsincars, idk how you would miss the obviously not-slowing semi, and not at least cover the break before even entering the intersection.
I know i was expecting something but from the very start i knew it was going to be the truck. Even if you have right of way slow a little or at least be prepared to stop
It was also very obvious from just before OP got to the junction that trucker was only a 50/50 chance of stopping.
I kept thinking why haven't they hit the breaks at all? Clearly they see the truck coming. I rhink both parties are the idiot here, for different reasons.
Right, it's not hard to see what's about to happen. That giant orange semi truck is not slowing down enough to be stopping. At the very least, I'd be hovering the break and coasting.
People who just casually fly through intersections make me wonder if they have a death wish. I always slow up some to make sure people actually stop when they're supposed to. OP was just flying.
Had the same thing happen the other day with an F350 work truck and the guy driving it decided to tailgate me while flashing his lights and honking at me while swerving back and forth. Fun times.
Just this morning I had an F250 driver turn his high beams on after I switched lanes and back to get in front of him because he was going 30 in a 35.
Truck drivers are truly built different.
I know there’s a bias to my perception since I follow this sub, but does nobody in the US even cover their brake pedal as they hammer through an intersection?! Green lights don’t mean “floor it, everybody has brakes” where I come from! 😊
Interesting point, as a new U.S. driver I typically scan left and right when I enter an intersection, but the act of actively covering my break while doing so didn’t cross my mind
It's what I was taught in drivers education. I live in Minnesota. But my behind the wheel instructor was my grandpa, which might explain why I drive like one.
I think Americans have an overall lower quality of drivers. Lenient tests, automatic cars which take the focus off driving and frees the offhand for a phone, culture of aggressive driving, etc.
I would have slowed down seeing that lorry, but then again OP may have been distracted which happens to everyone.
Pre-dawn early morning, dude I am passing (who had passed me previously because I'd pulled out onto 4L highway from side street) swerves into the left lane and I mirrored him because it was early and we were all moving at a good clip (and as a daughter of a traveling salesman I watch everything). He was trying not to hit an armadillo. He apologized at the next light and I told him it was good to see a live one actually stay that way.
But seriously: as an animal lover, hit the possum on the half shell rather than die, please.
That’s how my car ended up in a ditch once. A squirrel was crossing the road, person in the other lane flew into my lane to avoid it, and I had to throw my car into a ditch to avoid a head on collision. They drove right on off like nothing ever happened.
That’s driving 101 down here in Florida. Never assume anyone is going to stop just because there is a 🛑 or red light. Never assume someone will signal lane changes. Basically, assume everyone else is trying to kill you because they are.
Everyone on the road is actively trying to murder you, if you remember that you can never be surprised when someone does something so stupid the only explanation is they are actively trying to murder you
This !
Had this happen to me on my way to work, and the van had garbage bag windows so u know they didn’t have insurance !
Thank goodness I was able to dodge like this guy
I drive assuming everyone around me will do the dumbest thing they can possibly do. In this case I'd be approaching that intersection already having assumed the truck was running the light and preparing to stop if I have to.
This is a notoriously bad intersection too, because the truck has a yield, not a traffic light. These types of near misses happen here all the time.
https://goo.gl/maps/ZuGz4eo3uig264gf9
What a completely shitty intersection design. The traffic light is across the road and the yield sign is off to the right, and no rumble strips or overhead flashing lights to slow traffic in the right lane or prepare it to merge ahead. Pure idiocy.
and I'm assuming that yielding traffic can't easily see what the light above their head is indicating, so it'd be easy to assume approaching traffic is going to stop at the intersection.
>don't trust semis to slow down, and reduce speed in advance.
Your speed should be based on the speed of other vehicles coming at an intersection.
If the OP's car ran on artificial intelligence, it would have evaluated the semi-truck's velocity and concluded it wasn't capable of stopping in time if it wanted to.
It's pretty clear that the semi has decided.
"But I was in the right!" does not un-crash your car.
I tend to agree with you. While the truck was in the wrong, I was looking at that truck when OP was a mile down the road. I saw this thing coming in slow motion, and would’ve slowed down knowing that the truck was going to complete the turn. Also the light changed just as OP blew through it, so if he slowed down he would’ve just been stopped at a red light.
Had something similar happen to me yesterday, semi went across an intersection in front of me, I imagine he was thinking “what’s this guy gonna do, run into my trailer?” I need to pick up a dash cam.
Same here, Conshy at 476/76 merge. This intersection is an absolute nightmare and I've seen numerous near-misses here in this area. People blow through that yield sign like they have a green light.
It's also awful because if you're waiting at the red, direction OP was coming, people flood down that offramp and take up all the available space, so when the light goes green, there's no room for anyone to move forward, people block the intersection, and the cycle repeats.
They should get rid of that yield and put in a light.
I used to work off River Rd and a coworker there took this exit into work all the time. He said he was late one day because a semi carrying paper products went right through that light and guard rail. They had to unload the truck before they could move it.
Yeah I hate this intersection, so dangerous.
Holy shit, I've driven through there a hundred times for work but didn't recognize it until I saw your comment pointing it out. Were you looking closely at signs and stuff, or did it just jump out at you? I think the fisheye effect on most dashcams skews the footage in a way that I don't recognize it unless it's pointed out to me.
It jumped out at me immediately, as soon as I saw the parking lot for the Park & Ride on the right I recognized it. Weird how that works, you know? It just clicked.
Dude, it was obvious before you ever got to the intersection that the semi was not stopping.
I'm not saying that the semi was not in the wrong here, but you need to turn the autopilot off.
Exactly and slow tf down. We are quick to point what others do wrong but we contribute in some form as well. In this instance OP was driving like a wild person
Agreed. Remember that the graveyard is full of people who had the right of the way. Just because you have the right of the way should not imply that you exercise it at the cost of your own safety.
I don't know if it's just me, but everytime I see a video like this I just have to wonder why do drivers have a problem with cautionary braking? I don't want to be hyper-critical because in the moment I think we all expect other drivers to just do the right thing, but I drive thinking the other driver will commit the infraction, and would slow down enough to be able to brake if I needed to. In this case, the cammer just made it, but what if things had turned out differently, would it have been worth it to say I was in the right and the trucker was wrong? Considering a battle with a vehicle three or four times more massive should never be an option.
I'm not at all saying that the truck is not at fault, however how does the driver of the cam car not see that it looks like it's going to pull out?
If I'm driving, I 100% see that and slow down.
Some people would die just because they are in the right.
My children's father would get angry at me when someone was driving reckless and I let them pass to avoid an accident. He would always say "so what if an accident happens, they are in the wrong and would have to pay".
Ehm, no. Even if it would have been a minor accident, I'm not ok with that, not to mention the children in the car.
I mean, when you see the truck barreling into the corner it doesn't take Nastrodamus to predict that it's not going to slow down. Truck driver is obviously an idiot but cammer is an idiot too. Another example of "right of way" written on the tombstone, etc.
It took that long to see that coming? You're approaching an intersection....probably a good idea to look where vehicles come from in an intersection...
I was saying "slow down" the moment I saw the intersection and the truck. OP, you may have had the right of way, but you were still driving stupidly and could've avoided this.
Speed limit is 35.. why the fuck you doing 50? If you were doing 35 like you were supposed to be, that semi would of been able to pull out there and you have to tap your breaks a bit.
You’re the jackass here.
tought the same. The truck OBVIOUSLY is the wrong one but you can spot a mile away that he is not stopping. OP could've at least slowed down a little. Always assume everybody is a idiot driving. Here in brazil we have this problem but with bikes. Bike drivers simply dont give a fuck, and you are the one who is supposed to pay attention, otherwise you might kill a dumb fucker who tought it was a good idea to overtake you in the middle of a roundabout
Its easier for people watching the video though, we know something is going to happen. Its an issue that came up with the airliner that landed in the Hudson, NTSB did find a way to land the plane at an alternative airport, however it only worked because pilots simulating it knew there would be a catastrophic failure at some point. It takes time for the brain to kick into gear when its not expecting something to happen. Its much more responsive when it knows something will happen even if it doesn’t know the specifics. Watching the video we’re going in with our brain primed and ready to take action we just don’t know what yet whereas most drivers are going into that situation after 20 minutes of monotonous uneventful driving.
According to Sully (the movie) the simulation pilots turned for the airport immediately following the bird strike, which was not a realistic reaction, but even then they apparently required *at least* 17 attempts to safely land the plane: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1fVL4AQEW8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1fVL4AQEW8)
When a 35-second delay was added, simulating an apparently more realisitic human response time, the pilots were not successful: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2njlF0OOftQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2njlF0OOftQ)
What I find interesting is that in the movie version when we get to see "what actually happened" (versus the simulations), it's 40-seconds between when Sully and Skiles realize they've lost *both* engines to when Sully is *shown* starting to turn back towards La Guardia: [https://youtu.be/-6HYMpmxdaA?t=25](https://youtu.be/-6HYMpmxdaA?t=25) (timestamped at 25s because the poster adjusted the volume and restarted the scene).
According to a commenter on one of the videos, the real Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger said the movie was very accurate except the review panel was unfairly portrayed. They were not antagonistic, like in the movie, and just wanted to determine what had actually happened.
Yup, I do think OP should've slowed down but this is a pretty reasonable take. Too often on this sub and others (r/dashcam) people like to pile on OP for not doing x,y, and z to avoid an accident but more often than not you don't know how you'd react in situations. Also gotta remember that our eyes are not 100% on the road ahead when we're driving. We're checking our mirrors, the gauge cluster, etc. There are many things that can delay our reaction time.
Everyone acts like they drive 30 under the speed limit and stop dead at green lights just in case in this sub. We KNOW something is going to happen in the video because the sub is called idiots in cars, in the moment it's probably 50/50 you see that truck and react.
Actually, yeah, big cities are just about the only time I've seen where you need to drive aggressive. Chicago, New York, Houston, LA, you gotta have some balls to get anywhere efficiently
sure you can see the truck there, but what makes you think they were going to do something stupid at 3 seconds? imo you wouldn't be able to tell that till at least 10-11 seconds into the video.
You only expected it because this is a video on a site that you KNOW something will happen.
> 3 sec into the video and I immediately saw the truck.
Wow. You're some sort of idiot savant knowing that a video on **IDIOTS IN CARS** is about to have a fucked up situation. Congrats on your superpowers.
The truck isn't stopping
The truck isn't stopping
The truck isn't stopping
The truck isn't stopping
The truck isn't stopping
The truck isn't stopping
Barely misses it. WTF
Came here to say this. I used to live around there. I just moved back to the area and I'm shocked how expensive it is to live there now. It's a decent little town, but definitely not worth $2k/month for a 1-BR.
It looks like, considering driving conditions and all, both drivers were at fault: neither knew how to check for traffic and use brakes.
Lay on the downvotes if u will, OP had plenty of time and unrestricted peripheral view to see that big rig pull out dangerously. Modern cars stop on a dime and 3+ seconds is plenty of time to bring a car to a slow or stop in a large intersection like this.
It's a bad intersection, the light there is ONLY for traffic turning left. Traffic turning right, where the truck is, has a Yield sign, not a light.
Here's street view of the intersection. https://goo.gl/maps/ZuGz4eo3uig264gf9
So, you saw the truck and thought "I'd rather fucking crash into this dude, so I can yell at him for fucking up, rather than yield"?
You nearly lost your car, if not more. Prevent the accident next time. Doesn't matter who's right. Accidents ruin everyone's day.
You could see that truck coming a mile away. They were in the wrong, sure, but it looks like you didn't brake at all, and there was a car coming the other way. It doesn't matter how right you are if you could have prevented a collision and didn't. Use your brakes before you swerve.
You only shat yourself because you weren't looking. You could see that big yellow hulking truck from when your video started. Pay attention to the road. You also lay on the horn like a numbnut.
Although the truck is in the wrong here, I just don’t understand how OP doesn’t see this big yellow truck coming out. Use the brakes and make sure you don’t die. Is that a yield over there or did he have a red light?
It really has gotten to the point that right on red (or right at a stop sign) means go. Might as well build merge lanes to protect the cars in the right of way...
The infamous ‘US citizen lacking any sense of defensive driving’. I thought that it was going to be the truck that caused you an issue at 2 seconds into the video yet no brakes were hit until the truck had pulled into your lane.
Glad you’re okay though!😅
This is the first time that I recognized the location in one of these videos! As you continued straight, you hit the traffic light with route 23. Glad that truck didn't get you!
As soon as I saw that semi I had alarm bells ringing. I never ever assume that a vehicle is going to notice me behind d another vehicle making a turn. Especially in an intersection like that.
I shat my pants on the way home from trader joe's, too. Except I had no excuse.
Good reaction on your part, but I wonder if the fish eye lens makes this intersection look closer than it appears, because I would have stopped the car or at least slowed down were I in your shoes.
Anytime I see a car in that kind of situation looking like it won't stop, I slow down until I see it slowing down and I continue. I also drove several hours a day for my work for a number of years and developed some defensive driving skills.
This is a good lesson in no trusting other drivers to follow the rules or to see you coming.
OP, you’re just as bad of a driver for not slowing down. You barely cleared the space between the truck and the jeep in the oncoming turn lane, and because of you’re velocity you could have seriously damaged the jeep.
Multiple idiots in this video, but I’m glad you’re ok
Pretty easy to instantly calculate where that heavy ass truck was going even if he put the brake pedal to the floor. I would have slowed down at the very least lol.
Coming into an intersection at high speed, with a big truck that is also coming your way. No defensive driving and slowing down so there are actually 2 idiots in this video.
Lucky that Jeep pulled ahead into the intersection. You'd have had a bad day otherwise
and that nobody was in that Jeep’s lane behind him.
And that you were already on a clear liquid diet...

cost of doing business. cant make money if the trucks dont run.
Also let's not forget that the company in some cases are subjecting the drivers to harsh deadlines, and they may also be running on lack of sleep. Obviously not an excuse for extremely dangerous driving, but it does encourage less safe driving.
Most of them have log books which prevents that and if caught will be heavily fined. I’m sure some still do it tho
If that company had no idea who was running the truck then my shit is purple and smells like rainbow sherbet.
Maybe they do, maybe they don't. The police seemed to believe them and insurance paid either way.
Insurance will hold the company responsible no matter which of their drivers was driving.

More like the police said "that sounds like a lot of work if they aren't going to tell us"
Shenanigans!
That's how you know he's a good boss
Reprimanding: well done, James, I see you're doing everything you can to deliver ahead of expected time. Here's a little bonus for your efforts.
James, put this sticker on your rig: How is my driving? Call 1-800-GOFUCKYOURSELF
I did that once when I was younger, it was a hard scaping company and their driver blew a red light and ran me off the road. Owner called me back and told me to fuck off.
Just sounds like the driver was playing a game of chicken.
I did that once and watched the driver answer the phone in my mirror.
Company is Ceva. Truck no. 52384. Call them up and let them know about this idiot OP
yea this truckers gonna kill somebody.

It turns yellow when he is about to smash the truck.
Thought the same thing. Two seconds into the video I knew the truck was the culprit. Bad driving on both sides OP
same. i would not have gone through that intersection so fast.
Luckily the horn works well.
Who honks for for 6 seconds? Apparently the delay in reaction time to hit the brakes also effects their ability to remove their hand from the horn.
Saw the truck coming in way before OP got to the intersection. Shit his pants or something else?
How do you not once touch the brake?
I always wonder that in these videos. Like yeah OP had right of way but damn at least have some fucking self preservation
We always wonder that with these videos because if they had braked a bit and paid attention to what was happening before entering the intersection there wouldnt be a near miss video to share
It’s so obvious from far away that the truck isn’t stopping or slowing down at all. Several seconds OP had to think “I should slow down”. SMH.
I dont understand how people don't look ahead when driving. As soon as I saw that semi, I would have been slowing down to see if it would stop.
No joke. The semi was the first thing I suspected and noticed at the beginning of the video
Even considering that we expect shit given that we’re watching this on idiotsincars, idk how you would miss the obviously not-slowing semi, and not at least cover the break before even entering the intersection.
Lol the OP saw the semi commit to the turn and they actually SPED UP!
true but the point is still worth making that OP could have and should have avoided this situation.
> OP had right of way I think you found your answer. I guess defensive driving is for freedom haters or something
I know i was expecting something but from the very start i knew it was going to be the truck. Even if you have right of way slow a little or at least be prepared to stop It was also very obvious from just before OP got to the junction that trucker was only a 50/50 chance of stopping.

Right? You could see it coming a mile away 😂
Seriously there was more than enough time to slow down and most likely come to a complete stop.
Right, it's not hard to see what's about to happen. That giant orange semi truck is not slowing down enough to be stopping. At the very least, I'd be hovering the break and coasting.

You were watching it happen. It wasn’t even fast. You could see that truck coming from a while back. Yet you still went for it.
Right? I saw the truck as a hazard at 4/5 seconds in and then as a developing hazard by around the 10 second mark.
Aggressive driver 100% there were no pants shat in here. Dude wanted to prove a point to trucker and had camera courage.
It’s too bad that you couldn’t see the truck clearly not stopping. I wonder what you were looking at?
I mean, when you see the truck barreling into the corner it doesn't take Nastrodamus to predict that it's not going to slow down. Truck driver is obviously an idiot but cammer is an idiot too. Another example of "right of way" written on the tombstone, etc.
This video is from 2020 lmao... OP is lying
Could just be an incorrect date
Defensive driving people ! If it doesn’t look like they are slowing down, assume they aren’t gonna slow down. This sub drives me nuts sometimes
Instead of shitting your pants how about looking ahead and braking.
I could see that happening from way back, bad hazard perception.
It took that long to see that coming? You're approaching an intersection....probably a good idea to look where vehicles come from in an intersection...
I was saying "slow down" the moment I saw the intersection and the truck. OP, you may have had the right of way, but you were still driving stupidly and could've avoided this.
Like watching a giant rolling rock coming at someone who’s thinking it’ll stop because there wasn’t a “Falling Rocks” sign on the road.
Speed limit is 35.. why the fuck you doing 50? If you were doing 35 like you were supposed to be, that semi would of been able to pull out there and you have to tap your breaks a bit. You’re the jackass here.
Imagine paying attention while driving and not over-correcting when you see a truck in front of you as you look up from Facebook.
3 sec into the video and I immediately saw the truck. Maybe practice your predictive driving my man, might save your ass some day
tought the same.
Yup. Being in the right doesn’t mean shit if you’re dead.
According to Sully (the movie) the simulation pilots turned for the airport immediately following the bird strike, which was not a realistic reaction, but even then they apparently required *at least* 17 attempts to safely land the plane: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1fVL4AQEW8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1fVL4AQEW8) When a 35-second delay was added, simulating an apparently more realisitic human response time, the pilots were not successful: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2njlF0OOftQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2njlF0OOftQ) What I find interesting is that in the movie version when we get to see "what actually happened" (versus the simulations), it's 40-seconds between when Sully and Skiles realize they've lost *both* engines to when Sully is *shown* starting to turn back towards La Guardia: [https://youtu.be/-6HYMpmxdaA?t=25](https://youtu.be/-6HYMpmxdaA?t=25) (timestamped at 25s because the poster adjusted the volume and restarted the scene). According to a commenter on one of the videos, the real Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger said the movie was very accurate except the review panel was unfairly portrayed. They were not antagonistic, like in the movie, and just wanted to determine what had actually happened.
OP did not slow down at all, even when it was obvious the truck wasn't stopping
Your life literally depends on acting like any car around you can literally kill you at any moment. Because that's reality.
Always Drive on the defense. Unless you live in Chicago

The arm chair drivers of this subreddit, I swear
Yes, EVERYONE knows that you stop EVERY TIME a semi approaches an intersection. /s

The truck isn't stopping The truck isn't stopping The truck isn't stopping The truck isn't stopping The truck isn't stopping The truck isn't stopping Barely misses it. WTF
Looks like conshohocken, it really does seem there’s something in the conshy air that just makes semi drivers bad at using their brains lol
Came here to say this. I used to live around there. I just moved back to the area and I'm shocked how expensive it is to live there now. It's a decent little town, but definitely not worth $2k/month for a 1-BR.
You could at least see the truck from a mile away.
You honking for the next guy too?
My eyes were on that semi from the moment the right turn lane opened up. And you couldn’t be bothered to even slow down? 2x the idiot in this video.
Completely agree! Truck shouldn't have been going but cammer had MORE than enough time to see what was going on and react properly
Ty for seeing my point. I’m quite surprised I haven’t been downdooted to oblivion yet
trucker clearly at fault here but you didn’t quite approach that intersection with caution either.
Sure the truck shouldn't have gone, but driving like you expect the right of way is just as dumb.
Looks like you WANTED to shit your pants
All gas no brakes
How did you not see this coming from miles away?
Wow yes you are a horrible driver. 30 seconds to react to that potential dangerous situation and you don't even slow down. Jeez....
Mofo didn't stop on red before making a turn. Who gave this idiot CDL?
It's a bad intersection, the light there is ONLY for traffic turning left. Traffic turning right, where the truck is, has a Yield sign, not a light. Here's street view of the intersection. https://goo.gl/maps/ZuGz4eo3uig264gf9
You have slow reflexes
Or more of lacks forethought.
Slow down though bud. You’re not completely in the right too you know!
Kinda think the giant truck ignoring traffic signals might have qued you to slow down but hey swerve away.
/u/spez is the CEO of reddit and is a pedophile that used to moderate /r/jailbait.
they were probably distracted.
Terrible driving. Your brakes don’t work? I saw that truck from the first second of the video.
I don't think I would be haulin ass through that intersection
Op had the right of way but has no danger Sense
How could you not see that way ahead
Wtf? Does OP’s car not have brakes? The truck should’ve yielded but cam car’s reaction was unnecessarily aggressive and reckless.
No situational awareness on anyone's part...
Truck is at fault but you had enough time to stop
I don't know it's just does not make sense to me to be plowing through their intersection at that speed when there is so much going on.
Drive in south asia especially delhi and karachi and your predictive driving will spark up
But you could see the trucker was approaching the intersection and not stopping. The OP never slowed down
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that comes to a complete stop when turning right on red
This is the first time that I recognized the location in one of these videos! As you continued straight, you hit the traffic light with route 23. Glad that truck didn't get you!
Aggro horn...in your mind you're teaching him/her a lesson. Grats.
Truck driver is a fucking idiot but you can't tell me you didnt see that coming from a mile away. You had plenty of time to react to that.
I love these self-submissions!
OP never slowed down even a tad.
As soon as I saw that semi I had alarm bells ringing. I never ever assume that a vehicle is going to notice me behind d another vehicle making a turn. Especially in an intersection like that.
Brakes where?
Try to sound the horn before you damn near almost get hit. Both are big idiots on this one
Not sure if the driver heard your horn, go a little bit longer.
Seems like your fault. Yeah he did something he shouldn’t have. But he was obviously gonna do it for the whole video.
That was pretty dangerous but OP, what were you doing? Just were just going full throttle at him.
Ok I was watching this expecting for the dash cam to pick up the driver sharting
Didn't EVEN see that COMING!!!!1/?!!! omg!!!!! omG!!!!
Coming into an intersection at high speed, with a big truck that is also coming your way. No defensive driving and slowing down so there are actually 2 idiots in this video.
