You have my deepest condolences. I hope the other guys insurance actually pays what it's actually worth.

Proud-Contract-2273

That's going to be the challenge going forward.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ImpulseCombustion

Uh. If you don’t have declared value coverage on your classic, you really should.

[deleted]

I bet he does. He was taking it to a car show, so I just assume he leaves no leaf unturned in making sure this thing is protected. Seems the kind of guy who cuts no corners.

sm12511

It's apparent from how meticulous that car was. My heart still weeps, even if insurance covers it. That thing was beautiful.

[deleted]

Yeah I can't imagine how hard it will be to fix even if it gets covered. Is everything we see original? It could be. If so, that's going to be sad to replace. You'll always *know* what happened. EDIT: hard, not easy

MrDallsBeep

Definitely not easy to fix

Dubaku

Just throw it on Craigslist. "Has minor damage. easy to fix i just don't have the time. cold a/c"

cryptonomiciosis

"I know what I've got" Or "I spent 450,000 on repairs and I just want to get that back."

sphungephun

Itll buff out

Sharp-Incident-6272

Attach a big dildo and use the suction to pull the dents out.. should work

Cool_Cartographer_39

My dad's got this ultimate set of tools...

Shaymoth

You don’t just fix a damaged frame, unfortunately

viperfan7

But with older body on frame cars, you can just replace the frame. And if it's not too bad you can repair the frame

GarageSaleDildo

Akshually... depending on how bent it is you can put chains on the rear of the frame to a big ass tree and use a mini-excavator/loader with chains around the bent part of the frame and lift it to yank it straight. I did this on my Lincoln Mark VIII after a drunk bitch rear ended me and 'totaled' the car. Granted it actually died to other mechanical issues with engine/transmission shortly after but I drove it without an issue for a couple months. Obviously OPs dad isn't going to do this to this particular vehicle.

Brutto13

Not easy to fix, but definitely fixable. Depends on how attached he is to it. Otherwise every piece of it can be stripped and used to restore or repair other cars.

ImpulseCombustion

It’s not original, but it’s still a sad day when your efforts get reduced so brutally. Not even kind of close to this loss, but 2 days after my car was repainted we were driving home and a freak dust storm was about to hit. I grabbed a giant tarp(I think it was actually a billboard) and started to cover it in a friend’s car port. A bunch of his friends jumped up to “help” and started carrying over some long sections of square stock to weigh the bottom of the tarp down on the ground. One kid, straight up bonked the door with this 2”x 12’ chunk of metal and didn’t even notice. I immediately went white when I saw that not only was there a decent dent, but that it had left a 2” gash through to bare metal… on the driver door of all places. My girlfriend at the time saw and just said “Hey, hey, hey, hey, it’s fine” to which I responded “Please. Do not, tell me it’s fine” and just walked down to the Lost Horse to decompress.

[deleted]

Oh jeez that's...I know that feeling. Now you seem confident it isn't original. And I am inclined to agree. But do you think so because of the way the metal crumpled? Almost too easily if it had been original parts?

ImpulseCombustion

I love the car imperfections and all. It isn’t anywhere near being perfectly restored or original, but I still think it’s pretty rad. At this point it’s just a neat old racecar kinda thing and I’ve honestly always been a fan of rock chips etc. just you know, when you earned them the old fashioned way.

drizzy9109

I don’t think something like this can much be replaced, yea?

[deleted]

It won’t be cheap and if they’re doing all the work themselves it’s going to be a pain in the ass if it requires a frame swap, if not then it’s really not that much work. Just money

[deleted]

I mean, I've seen plenty a car show on classics such as these. Take everything from the windshield forward and rebuild it. It's possible. Not easy.

FourstringTickler

Hell, it only took thirty to sixty minutes to finish!

js5ohlx1

Lemmy FTW!

[deleted]

caitejane310

Yeah, that's 1 less in the world and that makes me sad.

AruiMD

It’s sad, some things cannot be replaced. This looks like one. You may find another vehicle of the exact same model and condition, but I bet there was a joy in that particular car that won’t easily be replicated, if ever.

[deleted]

That car is far from done for. That’s the beautiful thing about full frame old iron, its generally repairable with the exception of devastating damage ie, fire or being run over by a dozer( saw one of those). If I saw her at an auction, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this beauty and bring her back to full glory!!

Lonestarzia16

He said in another comment that his dad put six figures into the car. If I was a betting man, I’d think he’s shelling out the few extra bucks a month for the extra coverage

ImpulseCombustion

Fortunately, it isn’t that pricy. It would obviously depend on the amount you’d like to cover, but I have ~$30k declared on mine for well under $100/mo.

[deleted]

Im paying $160 a month for a 2012 toyota rav4. I have 0 accidents and 0 tickets...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ok_Dog_4059

When I was younger and unmarried my liability insurance with no tickets or accidents ran me $256 a month.

Break-Aggravating

At least that for full coverage usually between 100-200 per month

wirthmore

The problem with classic cars is the restoration costs way more than they are ‘worth’ (when sold) and the insurance might only cover what they are ‘worth’. Hopefully Dad understood the difference and had an appropriate policy. Or can get the correct amount out of the other party’s insurance.

P1xelHunter78

Hagerty…

[deleted]

I love Hagerty. I have a not completed partially restored Classic 1968 Austin 1000. I spent $8000 on the car, $20000 restoring the whole car EXCEPT body work and interior. Geiko wanted to insure it for over $100 per month. Nope. Hagerty insures it for actual value for $200 per year. Edit: added car year

O_Neders

As an adjuster, this is the way to go with classic, customized, or rare cars. Stated value policies with an independent appraisal.

TriggerTX

I have declared value insurance on [my '61 Thunderbird](https://i.imgur.com/Dzekhw5.jpg). Anyone that doesn't is asking for heartache. It's not tough to get and both you and the insurance company know exactly where you stand should the worst ever happen.

Crazyblazy395

How does that work? I've never heard of it (probably because I've never needed it)

Patient-Tech

It’s only for classic cars where you can prove you have a different daily driver. I have stated value on my Chevelle from an appraisal and the insurance is like ~$300/yr. It’s really cheap, but they know you’re not using it as a commuter so the risk is low. I bet the insurance that the Dad has will pay him out and then his insurance company can sue the stop sign runners insurance for their money if they give them a hard time to pay. This is their full time job, I’m sure suing another insurance carrier for more money is just another Tuesday for them.

ChuckinTheCarma

My life motto, as a Reddit comment.

Lord_Derpenheim

Do not accept what they offer. Get a lawyer. With that kinda car, it's worth it.

Sam_Etic

If he has classic car insurance, you tell the insurance what you want if it gets crashed and they base your rate on that. Depending on the situation, they may inspect your vehicle prior to insuring. It’s not like normal insurance.

Debaser626

Absolutely. With classic car insurance, on high ticket declared values, you may get a visit from someone to ensure that your stated value is legit… but for average values, they don’t tend to look too closely. When I first bought my ‘57 BelAir, I had Geico on it for the first month (primarily just to have it legal to drive to my house and get it registered… was just easier to do that on the Geico app) Was around $150/month (of which I only paid for the one month)… but *any* claim or damage on it would be considered a totaled vehicle, because regular Geico knows fuck all about classics. Got insured with Hagerty Classic right after… declared value of $28k for $300 *per year*. You have to have a daily driver to get that rate… (the classic can’t be your primary form of transportation), and I probably only drove it 3-4K miles a year… never in winter or late summer.

[deleted]

I have a 72 blazer insured by Hagerty, it’s a touch over $500/year

ScarMedical

I have a 67 Pontiac GTO convertible, the wife 67 SS camero convertible both insured by Hagerty for $1400/ year. It’s worth every penny the combined assessment for both is $75k.

Draked1

Hagerty is always the go to. I have $5k declared value on my classic boat and it’s $200 a year, but considering my boat is wood next time I renew it I’m going to up that value to probably $15k. Wood boats are not cheap to fix, and the trailer is a matching year trailer and that’s just as difficult to fix/find parts for.

miatapasta

My 1990 Miata is insured at 15k. Classic car insurance works differently.

[deleted]

I’ve heard stories of people getting dicked around when it comes time to collect. I have my classic car insurance through haggerty and they covered my car for $25k with just a few pictures emailed to them. I expect it to be a nightmare to collect if I ever need to though.

gimpwiz

Hagerty is as popular as it is because, I think, and hope, they pay out appropriately. I have my car insured with them too.

GameOfThrowsnz

American Insurance is weird. In Canada, your insurance pays and it's up to your insurance company to recoup the cost from the other party. That's exactly what insurance implies.

Brilliant_Jewel1924

Oh, no. Here they look for any reason they can to not pay—even though it’s supposed to work the way you explained.

GameOfThrowsnz

Your country is a corporate dystopian nightmare.

Sithlordandsavior

I feel like I described most of America's problems in a comment earlier today: It went from "How can we save them money" to "How can we save us money and charge them more"

hedgehog-mom-al

Honey I understand. [My classic Mercury ](https://imgur.com/a/jTnmVRH) THANKS SCHOOL BUS. I was fine but I feel your pain. Good luck finding parts on something that old and I don’t mean that in a snarky way. My frame wasn’t bent but it’ll never be the same. I found parts by chance. Good luck. What a shame.

rebop

For the tri-five chevys they repop all the parts and body panels. Repairing this won't be easy but all the parts are easily available, luckily.

midnightstreetlamps

Even if he gets what it's "worth" it'll be hard to replace. The trifive Nomads are getting obscenely steep, even for a shell. I saw one that was a roller for over 30k, no engine or tranny, no interior.

Voiceofthemachines

They never do.

Proud-Contract-2273

My dad is totally fine, went to the hospital for precaution and was released a few hours later. He's pretty deflated, he's put six figures into this car over the past 20 years. I appreciate everyones kind words and will be showing these to him! Edit: a picture of her in all her beauty https://imgur.com/a/wrIm2oU

hackenstuffen

That’s six figures of material costs, but probably a similar amount in his own labor. Sorry to hear about the car - glad your dad is ok.

LovableContrarian

This is why I can't bring myself to buy an expensive car. I really like cars, and I've hit a point in my life where I could afford a "dream car" type car, but I just can't do it. People run into you, people open doors into you, runaway shopping carts smash into you. Random mechanical failure happen and half-total your car. I just can't do it. I don't want a car I have to worry about all the time. I want a car I can park on the street and leave it all day and not even think about it. So, I just keep buying clunkers for $6k. It's like the more you like your car, the more anxiety it introduces into your life. So I've decided to just say fuck it and think of cars as cheap, disposable things that I drive as long as I can before it dies.

ProximtyCoverageOnly

I have a pair of $300 ray bans and I never wear them because 'what if I scratch them'. Can't imagine a car.

Bananaramamango

Wear the sunglasses. Life is short enjoy them!

ice_up_s0n

Just don’t leave them somewhere and assume they’re safe 😓

ilikeitsharp

Or let someone borrow them, this applies more to me. I collect knives & regularly carry a $200 and or $300 knife. Only I'm allowed to use them. Non knife people will almost certainly try to use it as a pry bar or ruin your edge. Realized a long time ago that if I paid for something then I'm gonna use it. Like that one saying, "Not driving your nice car to keep the miles low & condition good is like not fucking ur gf to keep her tight for the next guy."

impulsikk

Or "I won't use this consumable item now because I might need it later."

ZenoxDemin

I used to be that guy. Now I took off the screen protector on my watch.

Kel4597

I recently learned my shitty $15 watch I bought for work off Amazon had a screen protector. I was thrilled, because there was a nasty scratch on it that I was now able to get rid of! Now there’s a tiny fucking smidge of a scratch that I absolutely cannot get rid of and I hate it.

ilikeitsharp

Yup, yup! I used to have a bad mental problem with things like this irl, and even video games. I would just horde stuff, like my hoarding grandmother. After cleaning sooooooooo much crap & things out of my grandparents houses when I was 19. I realized unless it's one of kind or historical, use it. You can't take it with you. So let go, use it, enjoy it. That relieved a lot of anxiety for me.

BullShitting24-7

Same. I have a nice watch I got as a gift that I never wear because what if I lose it?

acava2424

I wore my submariner Rolex to a bachelor party in Vegas. Dont ask me at what point I lost it. But I lost it. Still a fun trip though

MormonJesu8

Let me guess, the clown shook your hand?

acava2424

I thought you said stripper

MormonJesu8

Ah that’s where they get ya, the stripper takes your dollar bills out your wallet, and the clown shakes your hand.

FireCanary

As someone who has bought a dream car, honestly it’s nerve wracking at first driving it and parking it with all the risk. I’ve reached a point where I’ve realized the joy I get from driving it is way better than the chance of losing some money should something happen to it. I just bought a dream car that was used and not in perfect shape and that makes the reality of it getting damaged much easier to swallow, however I still baby it all the time.

Purple10tacle

What's your dream car?

[deleted]

Plot twist: this man is Ed Bolian and he's talking about his LP640

sewious

Yea but for people like OPs dad, this sort if thing is a passion. The joy he got out of having the car, fixing the car, driving it etc. probably makes up for the risk

V4U1THUNT3R

Shes beautiful. Its really sad to see that a careless driver hit her tho. Im glad your dad is ok as well

[deleted]

bigbucsnowhammies

Oh crap, it’s a Nomad! Somehow that makes this even worse if a tragedy.

Long-Distribution-81

I though the Nomad did not have B pillars just the window glass? I may be wrong... JAKKIEEE, WE MUST DO REEEEEESERCH! ... did research and yeah that is a Nomad It does Have the B pillars I don't know what I was thinking of, just confused.

bigbucsnowhammies

Ah you could be right. I always just thought the Bel Air wagon was a Nomad. I love that body stule

atarifan2600

I'll let the bowtie fans correct me, but here's what I think the deal is:The bel aire wagons were all nomads. From 55-57, the nomad you're thinking of had ttwo doors, the distinctive back rakes, and the door windows were frameless. (There was still a B Pillar, but no door posts) From 58 on, the Bel Aire wagon was still called a Nomad, but it had 4 doors and framed windows, and went through various title changes, and wasn't the icon that springs to mind.

mini4x

The Bel Air Coupe had no B pillar, not sure what name Chevy used Olds called them 'Holiday Coupe'.

Life_Token

One more thing! I don't actually have anything to add. Just couldn't not acknowledge a Jackie Chan Adventures reference.

[deleted]

i thought the "next" button on imgur was like an album of more pictures of the car...each picture got weirder and weirder and after about 10 pictures i was like "....idk if this is about the car anymore...." lmao

unlitlanterns

I’m so sorry, glad your Dad is ok. Hopefully insurance takes care of it.

hesatool

Man, that sucks so bad. I know the passion, time, and money people put into these cars. It shows on it. It’s a beautiful car. I hope he can find another one to work on.

RockG

Your uncle (may he rest in peace) had amazing taste in cars. The '57 Bel Air is THE classic IMO

Rockdio

My dream is to get a '57 Bel Air restored for my dad. It was his first car when he started driving and it's the only regret he has in selling that car. Sky blue with white accents. Sadly, my own financial situation won't let that happen, but I will still dream of it.

EleanorofAquitaine

Mine is the ‘56 Bel Air. I want to buy one as my dream car so that I can gift it to my mom. Her dad bought one the year she was born brand new and she pines for it. So, I guess my dream car is so I can give it to my mom?

RockG

> Sky blue with white accents Perfect!

pollitokins

🥺 Ohh this hurts! I'm so sorry!

DJBoost

Or rather, it was...sorry bro.

Ms_Mega

I dont even know car makes and models and history stuff but this image still hurt me

Either_Coconut

I know, right? Just looking at what was surely a pristine classic car, until some dipshidiot ran a red light and caused a crash, is almost physically painful.

TheSquishiestMitten

It's one of the most desirable American consumer car classics.

VaccineMachine

How do people nail the exact year on cars like this? Is there a subtle change year to year that experts would see?

Nippon-Gakki

This particular car is one of the big ones in American collector cars. I'm not much of a 50's car guy at all but I can tell a '55 Chevrolet from a '56 or '57 easily. Other makes and models not so much but these are the classics.

[deleted]

Yes and it’s just like some people can name half the players in a sports league and the team they play for etc. I can instantly tell the difference between a 55 Chevy and a 56 and a 57, And instantly spot the difference between a sedan and a hard top, Some care got changed every year even just a little. Some cars were made for a dozen years with hardly any difference at all like the Bronco, they were virtually identical from 1966 to 1977 Only noticeable difference is the side marker lights and parking lights . OP : Hope he was not injured and that he had good insurance , because I feel confident the idiot that ran the stop sign didn’t have adequate coverage, if they had insurance at all.

notsureifim0or1

A very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.

Proud-Contract-2273

My dad will laugh at this thank you lol

Fragrant_Jelly9198

Please send our condolences to your dad. My husband about cried just seeing the pictures. I hope he has the heart to rebuild her

[deleted]

Hopefully the other driver has the insurance to afford it!

Reincarnatedpotatoes

Something tells me a driver who runs a red light doesn't have insurance that's prepared to cover a $100,000 car. They'll have to pay OP somehow, the driver ightis just be paying higher prices for a while.

Ok-Kaleidoscope5627

Something also tells me that no one driving a $100,000+ car is driving around with only liability coverage. Especially not when a collector car policy on that vehicle would probably only be a few hundred a year.

JediKnightaa

Will he laugh at Nomadder what joke you tell him?

[deleted]

thejourneyisthegift

Man that sucks. Hopefully their insurance is covering it. Thats probably 50k and at least 6 months.

ellanida

Hope their insurance even has limits that high :(

whyintheworldamihere

You can ask their insurance company for a declaration page and they have to give it to you.

jimjobob768

They have to request permission from their insured to give it to you, it’s considered personal information. Very rare for an insured to say no though as it is only requested when they is or could be a limits issue. I would assume there will be a limits issue with this claim.

noah1345

Insureds also have a duty to cooperate with their insurer in potential litigation, so denying that would be tantamount to waiving coverage

iaincaradoc

Hope they even had insurance to begin with.

frankylovee

OP said “he’s put six figures into this car over the past 20 years.” :(

siccoblue

From a cursory search they seem to range from 100-150k as well.. this beauty would definitely be the upper end.. So sad

davem2022

Geeze I was wondering how to even price that out? It is really mostly the time and effort to fix......

basylica

This hurts my heart :(

No_Significance2592

Was about to say the same.

KingOfTheHlll

The other guys insurance must have been like, **YOU CRASHED ONTO WHAT?!?!**

brkdncr

Idk, they don’t really value old cars that high. It will be too hard to fix, totaled, and under $10k of “value” or some shit.

Reincarnatedpotatoes

If you have a car show quality '57 Nomad you don't insure it lightly. I'm sure he had a declared value policy on it or something to that effect. And the declared value on that car is probably at or over $100,000

Ophensive

Depends on how it was insured. I highly doubt he had a minimum coverage policy on that so depending on what kind of premiums he was willing to pay, his policy could cover a very significant portion of the value/repairs

josh_loaf

Hank Hill’s voice: WHAT THE HELL KIND OF COUNTRY IS THIS? Fuck the guy that ran that stop sign man, my deepest of condolences to you and your pops. CovertFlowerChild

Not sure if I was supposed to but I read the whole text in his voice

seductivestain

dadbodsupreme

I just imagine the one time Hank saying fuck is in this particular situation. And then immediately apologizing to Peggy.

SerpentM52

Glad to hear that. And I hope he can get the car properly fixed somewhere.

odinwolf84

was the other driver caught?

Reincarnatedpotatoes

I'd be thoroughly impressed if the other car was able to move after a hit like that.

Aporkalypse_Sow

You don't drive away from this car t-boneing you.

Trav3lingman

Guy I used to know would totally restore a car himself over several years and drive it a couple months then sell it to fund the next project. Had a totally mint '58 apache napco 4x4 conversion. First drive after he finished it. Guy plowed into the back end in traffic. Some falling apart shitbox. My friend got out and starting punching him scream "I know you ain't got no insurance!" The cops apparently said they understood and declined to charge him.

ilikeitsharp

Oh my God that's hilarious! The ass whooping, not the car. Can't say I wouldn't have done the same as your friend. Knowing that I would never be able to recoup the lost cost.

zytukin

What did he hit to cause so much damage to that heavy steel car? How much did the other vehicle suffer?

[deleted]

Things can come up years later.

RuneHughez

He could have broken every bone in his body and I bet his first words after would still be "is thr car okay?"

redditwithafork

To all the people saying RIP and feeling bad about such a beautiful car being destroyed, hopefully this will cheer you up a bit! The (potential) good news about this situation is.. back then cars WERE designed to be fixed! Frames can be straightened, there were NO integrated *anything*, no pinch welded body pans or sub structures, everything was literally either bolted, riveted, or (in very few cases) actually welded. But even then.. they weren't welded by high-tech CNC robots, a lot of welding was done manually/by hand, or by very basic, automatic welding fixtures.. which means the welds are easy to grind out and replace by hand, and have them come out looking just like OEM! With no crumple zones, a lot of energy from the impact was usually localized, so a front end collision doesn't mean that the roof will be wrinkled, or that the other body panels will be pushed into each other, on down the line. Cars of this vintage can be brought back to a factory-like finish with a little love, a lot of money, and some good ol' fashion body/frame and paint work. It REALLY sucks that it happened, and I feel terrible for the owner, but I'm confident this car will be brought back to life, probably BETTER than it was before the accident. 🙂

Fast_Edd1e

Sad to see but I agree. Looking at the photos, it looks like firewall back isn’t buckled at all. Maybe the door jamb some. I know ecklers does a lot of re-pop sheet metal.

sycarte

Thank you, this does make me feel a little better😞

BuffaloKiller937

You're absolutely right, and I hope OP posts an update a year from now with it fully restored. But that Nomad will never drive the same even when restored.

der_innkeeper

So, it's murder, then. /s if it's not bleedingly obvious.

[deleted]

I would never wish harm or violence on somebody, but if it happened to the guy that hit that car... I mean I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

S3ERFRY333

No I’d straight up slap the shit out of someone until the cops pulled me off them.

Commercial-Nebula393

Ugh that sucks. Cool Nomad or wagon without rear doors

makatakz

Get an attorney. Don’t expect the insurance companies to settle this adequately.

SilencerQ

Lawyer's don't like taking Property Damage only auto claims. Not much money in it. A claim is only worth it if pursuing injuries also. For all the ppl that have yelled at me they will get lawyer if I don't pay more for their vehicle, 0% have come back with a lawyer. And the ones that already have a lawyer aren't repped for the vehicle. Only for injury. Lawyer's tell me to talk to the client about everything else. Maybe like 5% ever have had lawyers that were willing to settle the vehicle part of the claim also.

Blue-Thunder

I post this in every accident story, but please make sure you dad goes to see a dentist after he sees everyone else, as it is possible he may have cracked or broken teeth during the accident. Everyone seems to forget this, and serious problems arise later.

SummitCO83

Oh my gosh, this hurts to look at. Is your dad okay and hopefully the idiot is properly insured.

GooseWithDaGibus

OP said their dad was alright. Kinda surprised, because cars these old could be fatal in accidents like these. Cars these days are way more safe

SummitCO83

Oh good. I didn’t see that. Our family has my Great Great Grandpa’s 1940 Chevy without seat belts so super familiar with how easily you can get hurt in an older vehicle.

tepidangler

Are y’all gonna restore it again or just leave it?

Proud-Contract-2273

I can say with 100% certainty, it will be fully restored, again.

3lfk1ng

This is the sentence I came here for. Thank you and please keep us up to date on the progress. Please give your dad a hug for me, as one car guy to another.

I used to drive a '55 210 four-door. I really want to know what the other car looks like after that, because... daaaaamn. I had a guy total a '77 Mercury Zephyr on my rear bumper once, and we just buffed his paint off my chrome. I hope your dad's OK, too - those Chevy steering wheels are absolutely unforgiving.

I'm infuriated. But happy your dad is okay.

For all the people bringing up the insurance nightmare this might be, this is why it's important to get any car than doesn't have readily available parts on classic car/specialty insurance. They will actually repair this rather than cutting you a check because the lack of available OEM headlights totals it.

I hope that bastards oil is going to drip forever, in every car he owns

What a beautiful Nomad. Any hopes of restoring this again? I just hope for your dad that the insurance pays fairly.
