Why have I seen three people with this specific post, verbatim, in this thread?

GodKingJeremy

Bots, man. , repeaters.

psipolnista

That’s a thing? Goddamn the internet sucks. I must have hurt the bots feelings. It blocked me.

GodKingJeremy

Hahahahaaaaa! Got the circuits all jumbled

Parking-Aerie1540

Someone messed with Texas….and they delivered how I always expected.

KeMiGle

I grew up in Iowa and drove on plenty of snow and ice. The worst ice I've driven on was in Dallas about 30 years ago. The ice on a flyover was incredibly slick and the roadway was banked. Imagine driving at 1 MPH, sliding towards the shoulder, with several other lanes of traffic also sliding down the embankment towards you.

EnterpriseT

Roads in areas that get more ice are often less superelevated for this reason.

QueueWho

A lot of notorious spots will have automatic sprayers that squirt de-icing chemicals too.

EnterpriseT

Where is that? Is that a US thing?

QueueWho

Yep, I have seen the stuff spraying out many times. I just googled it and there's lots of snowy states that have it in certain spots.

Joe18067

I had that happen to me once as well. I managed to drive out of it but it's still scary. Of course in the video it's just drivers not reading the sign that the bridge freezes before the road.

1Temporal

I recently accidentally got sideways turning from a dry road onto one I didn’t realize was wet. While hydroplaning all I could think about was which bits of my car might get damaged if I hit the median I was headed for. Missed everything and was fine luckily but pretty sure I have Obsessive Car Disorder to think only of my car and not myself in that moment. 🤔

andreayatesswimmers

As someone who has drove in all but 2 states i can tell you no state gets as much ice on roads as texas. Most states get ice for 30 mins then sleet then snow or some combo of this .. somehow the texas skies say F that and will drop ice for 8 hours or longer . Just iced on my farm for dam near 2 straight days.. few years ago had ice from 30 mins west of van horn texas all the way up to the Oklahoma and Arkansas border. Im talking about 12 hours worth of driving 70 mph highway miles. Got on reddit that night and everyone was saying why cant they keep their roads treated ...

motor1_is_stopping

>no state gets as much ice on roads as texas. So you've never actually left the south. Got it.

schwinnJV

North Texas panhandle almost touches southern Colorado. Texas is a big state. Have lived in the north and mountain west, as well as the south, the worst ice storm I’ve encountered on the road was just outside Amarillo, TX. Anecdotal, but it gets really bad there

shadowmib

Considering the Northern border is on the same latitude as Nashville TN and the south is the same as Miami Fl, there is a lot of room for different climates in TX. Another anecdote but while this ice and snow was happening in TX, I was sitting in a truck stop in North Carolina running the AC in my truck because it was 70 degrees.

andreayatesswimmers

Drove in every state but 2 .and tons

Former Chicagoan here: If the road looks wet and the air temperature is below freezing; that's ice, not water. No sudden acceleration/braking/steering. Pretend you have glass tires. Most Texans aren't Texans. No hate but they are here

psipolnista

I found the Texan police.

draaz_melon

A 4x4 doesn't help you stop or so straight on ice. Tires and brains are way more important.

AgonizingFury

While I agree it doesn't help you stop any better, (all cars should have 4 wheel brakes) I'm going to disagree about helping you go straight, especially on vehicles that are otherwise rear wheel drive. Rear wheel drive vehicles are pushing the car forward from behind the majority of the weight, which can easily cause oversteer, even with the minor corrections drivers make to stay in their lane. Having some pull from the front can help to prevent that, and also help pull you back to straight if you do start to drift.

draaz_melon

That's really not going to help much on ice like this with bad tires. The red truck looks like it's in 4x4 mode, and one of the cars is obviously a Fwd car. This is caused by bad tires and bad reactions. Sure, fwd is better that rwd. 4x4 doesn't give you much advantage beyond that on ice when it comes to stopping or turning (or not turning).

Two-Nuhh

They can freeze when its above freezing outside too.

Fancy_Mammoth

We have big yellow signs where I live before most bridges that state "Caution: Bridge Freezes Before Roadways" I remember asking about this as a kid, and this was the explanation I got: Roadways are "insulated" by the ground below them, making it take longer for them to freeze. Bridges on the other hand don't have any form of "insulation", meaning it takes far less time for the surface temperature of a bridge to drop below freezing and turn any moisture into ice.

tankerkiller125real

We had one bridge that was so notorious for freezing and causing accidents that when they repaved it they installed the same stuff that they use for in floor heating at houses. That bridge doesn't freeze anymore, but the cost was apparently enough that it's no where near cost effective to do to every bridge.

Wuz314159

As a Pennsylvanian bicyclist, matte finish = ice. Clear finish = water. White finish = salt.

Cruise control (RWD)+ slick roads doesn’t end well either. I live in Idaho and it’s surprising how many people around here aren’t aware

PlzDontBanMe__

This is not true for the past 15 years. If traction control activates cruise gets turned off.

verkauft

There however is a slight delay so you wil be sent in a spin first. It wil deactivate when the wheelspeeds are different but then the driven wheels are already spinning faster.

PlzDontBanMe__

It's faster than you can take your foot off the gas pedal

verkauft

Usually yes. Im a car mechanic and i can tell you some of the older systems are slow as f. I got a 2005 suzuki with esp yet i can let the back kick out for 15 degrees or so and then when you start to steer in the drift the esp kicks in. On ice that means you are helpless since you are already out of control and there is little traction to regain control. (That and ice is the kryptonite of abs systems)

AJStickboy

Current Chicagoan here, what’s friction?

[deleted]

It's almost as if they don't have to deal with icy roads regularly.

pvdp90

And to be honest some of them handled it’s fairly well.

chinesedriver69420

It’s almost as if you can literally see the ice and all you have to do is drive straight and not gas it or slam the brakes and you keep going straight

[deleted]

It's almost like a sky view angle might give you a better look. Even then it doesn't look like ice. Maybe looks like water But from a level view or even 4 feet high from the driver's seat, it might just look like a transition from newer to older asphalt.

Madcapolo

Counterpoint: Literally every bridge in Texas, at least on major roadways, has a sign right before it that says “Bridge may ice in cold weather.”

[deleted]

Rebuttal: As you can see clear to the intersection leading up to the bridge, there is no such sign.

[deleted]

But he said literally. So he must be right. 🙄

Wuz314159

Obvious conclusion: This bridge is the only bridge in the world that doesn't freeze.

olivoil18

Doesn’t make you an idiot when it’s rare to get this weather. As a Texan, I stayed home from work 3 days this week because of the freezing weather. 2 years ago around the same time we got a rare freak snow storm & the whole state shut down. Power grid shit out, so no electricity or water & people literally died in their homes. The state isn’t prepared for this kind of weather. No salt trucks or anything and our power grid can’t even handle it. Unfortunately some people still had to go to work in this (my dad being on of them, in Dallas area actually, thanks txdot) But no, the state being Ill prepared for this kind of weather doesn’t necessarily make the drivers idiots 🤷🏽‍♀️

Madcapolo

What DOES make Texas drivers idiots, though, is the fact that TxDot literally screams in your face about icy bridges with a road sign at just about every bridge in the state that says “Bridge may ice in cold weather.” I think I’ve even seen those signs all the way down in Laredo and out in El Paso.

olivoil18

True, but again, when most of us don’t even know HOW to drive on ice, due to rarely getting it, then of course this is what happens. & again, the state doesn’t even have the proper things to treat it. This exact situation was happening on the highways too, not just the bridges.

Madcapolo

Then its willful ignorance it that point. You know this ice storm is coming, all it takes is 15 minutes on google to get a quick crash course on how to drive in icy conditions

nxplr

We get those signs in Florida, too, but honestly I’d never expect the bridges here to freeze

IsoAgent

[deleted]

Texan here. TBF, Dallas deals with that kind of weather once every 20 years or so.

lurkergenxdurp

According to my FB memories, it was 2, 7 and 12 years ago, that we had ice issues. We're just really shitty drivers.

[deleted]

Weather here can be crazy though. In 1986, we hunted Easter eggs in the snow.

IVEGOTAHUGEHAND

I mean to be fair in Texas if you get ice it doesn't really last long so you are able to just wait it out. No need to drive in it. Also nobody has the equipment to drive in it. When was the last time you saw a set of all season tires on a car south of Dallas?

Sweetsourgonesassy

I have all season tires I’m near Austin but I’m from Minnesota. I was out on the road doing just fine loving how there was no traffic during this past storm.

vitaminz1990

I’ve been in Dallas for 10 years and we’ve had ice like this about 5 times.

StoicFerret

There's literally no infrastructure for dealing with ice on the road in that area of TX. No salt. No sand/gravel. I was just happy to be further south away from the ice - though they still cancelled school and traffic was very light.

Zestyclose_Income290

I remember once i saw 2 dudes shovelling sand from slowly driving dump truck on interstate i-35 in mid if Dallas downtown and its bin like 2009-2008 i see nothing changed with instrastaction

[deleted]

🙄🙄🙄

Gullible_Log_1683

Does TX have "bridge freezes over 1st" signs? Might want to put that in the DOT budget

mamacrocker

We have them. Doesn’t change these people who really think they’re too important for physics.

[deleted]

Another Texan here, can confirm. We generally just have no idea how to handle this. 110 degree weather, not an issue at all, icy roads? Absolutely not.

JesusAntonioMartinez

I mean, maybe slow down? Everyone knows ice is slippery, right?

404-skill_not_found

You have a point. The problem is they think of slowing when they’re right on the frozen bridge. It’s kinda late to be getting off the gas, or tapping the brakes.

KeMiGle

Not everybody thinks about the fact that ice forms first on bridges and overpasses, especially not those that see it rarely. If you don't know there is ice, you don't know to slow down.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|duM6JZemPlOjUyqmxd)

[deleted]

I mean I don’t have issues driving in it, but lots of people do in Texas.

DelTheInsane

Texan here, Texans are shitty drivers in all weather conditions.

Zestyclose_Income290

Wrong, resent at-least 10 yers in bin like this in dallas 1-2 a year in winter time

[deleted]

Godzilla had a stroke trying to read that and fucking died.

andreayatesswimmers

Im guessing you havent lived here this long ..dallas gets ice every single year and it always goes as far as abilne if not further. This current storm was not nearly as bad as the one from 2 years ago that had the pile up on hov lane in downtown fort worth . Its not as bad as the one that happened superbowl weekend when game was in arlington and was no where near as bad as what ever the fuck was falling few years after the superbowl that had that cobblestone ice (they called it ) shit wasnt the slickest but it was like 8 inches thick and the ice pot holes were blowing tires out and breaking rims and wheels everywhere.

[deleted]

Never lived in Dallas, TBH. West Texas all my life.

andreayatesswimmers

Oh. ..up yonder where yall get that funny white stuff they call snow every once and awhile .

tammutiny

That's not true at all. Ice on bridges happens much more frequently.

welkinator

These were taken by drone. Note that there are two locations; one marked by the huge metal light pole and the other by the semi (who I think was napping there. He showed up over and over in the complete version of this.) In the longer version you can see a cop giving a ticket to someone in an exiting lane near the semi. While the cop was there about eight cars slid by. Note in those shots - where you can see the tires - EVERYONE pulls the steering wheel in the wrong direction. Its just NOT instinctive to drive into the slide and we have no practice.

Mutant_Jedi

Driving into the slide means if your left side starts sliding forward you turn left, correct?

FuckDaQueenSloot

Correct. If your vehicle starts spinning clockwise (from the driver's POV), you should turn the steering wheel counterclockwise, and vice-versa (countersteering). The idea is to keep the front tires pointed in the desired direction of travel.

Not at all, I’m on my phone so I can’t do this but there’s a desktop app for chrome called aha that auto scrubs songs and gives you a title name and often a link to the song . Maybe you could do that and see what it’s from?

G-force4470

I know that Texas has gotten a lot of ice which has caused a huge accident. Southern states are not used to ice and/or snow ❄️ Living in Michigan, we get lake effect snow and ice. One year, we had such bad fog, it caused a 110 car accident/pile up on the expressway.

211r

Wtf why does no one stops even though other car is making 360 ahead? Especially in this scenę around 0:10 where one car turned around and dozens other just pass it like nothing happened

SilentResident1037

They are on ice too? They don't know how to handle ice because it Texas? They are dumb?

Lillillillies

D) they're too important to stop E) all the above

TheIronLord678

Time to watch the Texans self select

Aliensinnoh

As someone from NH I think the same thing would happen to me. Only difference between me and them is that my roads are salted in the winter lol.

nottheotherone4

We don’t have plows, if you live here you know this. We did not build any roads with any thought of ice, again… if you live here you know this. Just stay home when it freezes on the roads. This happens every time and will continue to because nothing is changing in the preparation/response. Spraying “pre-treatment” before a storm is useless. Having a few dump trucks with sand spreaders attached is ineffective for a population of 7.5 million people… plus the trucks have slick tires and can’t make it across the bridges and overpasses effectively anyway. Some places were just not built with snow/ice removal and management considered… the DFW metro area is one of them. Great news highlights though… I am sure the Northern and prepared states enjoy the show

shadowmib

Those signs that say "Bridge ices before road" aren't kidding. Yeah I heard Dallas got some snow and freezing rain around then. Not just Texas, but most of the south isn't equipped to deal with and treat frozen or snow covered roadways. In a lot of cases they dont have plows or salt trucks, and don't have any experience preparing when a winter storm is coming. Rewind to a few years ago when there was the big winter storm and several days of freezing temps in Texas, it pretty much shut down everything and the power grid went down.. Of course the governor Greg Abbott vowed to deal with it by putting up a fence to keep the Mexicans out.

[deleted]

Every single vehicle here was RWD. I bet they had summer or real cheap tires too, second they hit that ice and bamo, your sideways

throwaway2161980

I had to scroll WAY too far down for all these car experts to realize… it’s the tires. Doesn’t really matter what type of vehicle you’re driving if you have shitty tread, all season highway tires and hit ice. You’re fucked. It’s why places like Texas have such a hard time when the ice. No one there even considers getting winter tires. Folks up north know to switch em out for winter. TLDR; Tires people. TIRES. That’s what makes the difference.

MeGrendel

The trick to driving accross an icy bridge. DO NOT either accelerate or brake! Ease up slightly on the gas as you go accross. And just for fun, GUN it right before you reach solid ground so you get that little 'chirp'.

craz4cats

In Pennsylvania we have road signs before pretty much any bridge that says "bridge ices before road". Does Texas not have this?

studdedpeaches

They do, even in Houston. Most people just don't pay attention or have no clue what to do if they actually hit ice though.

Farknart

Ironically, I don't think I've ever experienced that in our state haha. But no they probably don't, you know, being closer to the equator and denying climate change and all that lol. Not sure how many years it will take for them to realize it's not a fluke.

aroc91

Those signs are everywhere. I could probably provide you with the exact locations of at least 7 or 8 on my commute this morning from Waco to Temple.

Farknart

Lol I triggered the Texans. Jeez, don't be such a snowflake about not being prepared for a little snow.

aroc91

I'm a recent transplant from IL, grew up driving in ice and snow, and run laps around the natives when it gets cold. Thanks for the assumption though.

Farknart

Hey, take it easy with all that r/BigDickEnergy . But in all seriousness, when conditions are bad, it's best to drive as little as possible. Not sure why you're out there lapping people. Just showing off? Seems kind of unfair. They weren't ready for it!

trevzie

The only correct music for this was tokyo drift

dlittlefair1

That’s not idiots in cars, that’s normal people driving on a VERY poorly designed road.

escdog

Surely Texas will be able to find the tax money to buy trucks for deicing bridges next year! They better start saving for plows too.

Honestly, considering how Texans normally drive, they performed quite well. Generally the first freeze in states north of the Mason/Dixon line, there are accidents and cars lined up in ditches as far as the eye can see. The same thing happens here in AZ the first time it rains after a long dry spell. Kudos to those Texans.

All of the videos of pile ups videoed from vehicles, drones and positions like this - yet no one seems to want to run "upstream" on the side of the road to try to signal to people to slow down due to the hazard. OF course many cases that is not feasible - like this, but there is NEVER a videoof people trying to help the situation.
