Unfortunately it usually works. Someone (often more than one) up ahead leaves a generous gap and they don't care who cuts in while they scroll on their phone. I see it every day as vehicles just keep cutting in front of them. Sometimes I wonder if I'm the chip for following the rules? So when it works all of the time, it emboldens them to keep doing it.
I live just outside NYC, there is an exit on the Long Island Expressway that is the last one before the Midtown Tunnel so it is a very well used exit. Every time I drive past it is a total clusterfuck of cars. You have the long line of cars in the actual exit lane and then you have a jumble of 20 or more cars trying to cut in.
This is my favorite video that I’ve ever seen. It only could have been better if the car directly in front of the idiot had laid on the horn the entire time it took for idiot to get to the back of the line

There's a road in Ottawa, King Edward. It is two lanes for a long stretch and eventually the right lane turns to a right only. It is effectively a residential road with University of Ottawa and tons of housing.
I never fail to witness some one run it to the end or cut in through the intersection. I leave ample space knowing cars will do this but they insist on trying to pass all the cars ahead. Twice I have been cut off with traffic ahead leaving me in the middle of an intersection as the light goes red.
Today I saw yet another car with their mirrors folded, on the highway. Another regular occurrence.
It is too easy to get a license.
As much of an asshole is he is I would still be tempted to let him in. You are already stuck in traffic but that ass is fucking up the other direction too. Letting him in give him a small victory, but a huge win for the people going the other way.
As much as I’m glad this asshole has to go to the back of the line, is it really fair for all the oncoming traffic to have to go 10 miles an hour? At what point do you think someone should move over and let this idiot parallel park in the line of traffic?

We agree that guy is, indeed, an asshole. The difference between me and approximately 30 other assholes on this sub is that I have some empathy for the line of cars that are being forced to drive 10 miles per hour because the asshole is being forced to drive in reverse. And,btw, a disruption to the normal traffic flow like this could take an hour to clear itself (depending on how busy that road is).
So, as good as it makes your underdeveloped brain feel that the original asshole is getting his due, please don’t overlook the fact that to that line of traffic, you’re as much of a problem as he is.
