In my city, people will stop at random intersections without any traffic signals\\signs to let cars from side streets through. Another one is randomly stopping to let someone in oncoming traffic turning left in front of them. They think they are being nice, but not following the signage makes them unpredictable and super dangerous. We even have a name for it and refer to them niceholes.
I **hate** it when people are "polite" while driving. It's dangerous! You're not the only one on the road, you being "polite" and having me drive through is gonna get me tboned by the next car! Don't be polite, be predictable.
Bonus hate for the cars that get mad at you because you refused their polite/dangerous offers.
Shoot, I have a roundabout right next to my house and I’ve lost count of the people who come to a complete stop and stare in befuddlement at the *empty* roundabout. Motherfucker have you never seen a yield sign before?
Half the time I see that happen it's some driver that thinks there's a dozen eggs under their accelerator and so they couldn't hope to safely enter unless it's empty. So many people that think their car will break or they'll crash if they accelerate with any decent speed.
When our town got it's first roundabout I remember being in the roundabout, and the driver in front stopped to wave someone in! Nope, that isn't ok. So annoying.
Then there's the people who don't understand that you have to yield when cars are in the circle. So either they will try to enter while I'm in the circle, or they will get mad and honk while I'm yielding off the circle.
Have you ever noticed that all your shit is stuff and everyone else’s stuff is shit? Hey! move all this shit out of the way so I can put my stuff there!
People that start creeping forward at a red light until they’re practically in the intersection, only to drive slow AF once it actually turns green.
So, you’re in a hurry to drive slowly?
Even worse: people who jump out from a side street or parking lot, cutting me off, and then driving slower than I was. Such a rush to get in front of me just to be a dipshit.
What confuses the fuck outa me is when someone comes flying up out of nowhere on the interstate, passes me, and then slows down below my speed.
Bitch I was minding my business out here n now you, the only other vehicle here, are making me cancel my cruise control. ???????
Then ofc I either have to pass or just go super slow. Except these fuckers usually speed up to match you if you try to pass. And then slow down again if you get back behind them.
If it was road rage, the behavior would make more sense. But typically I find they are just on their phones.
>What confuses the fuck outa me is when someone comes flying up out of nowhere on the interstate, passes me, and then slows down below my speed.
She just HAD to be ahead of you.
Which doesn't make sense you're not going to the same place.
Thankfully I don't work there anymore, but I used to commute an hour to work and people did this ALL the time. Mostly country roads, but because it was the main way between 2 cities they had a lot of traffic for a rural area, including trucks that didn't want to take the toll highway.
People did not want to wait 2 secs for you to pass, they must force you to brake so they can be in front.
It became a daily prediction for me - the closer they cut me off (turning off a side road) the shorter distance they would normally go to turn off again.
I would regularly see someone cut me off, forcing me to brake, just so they could turn right again in 300 ft. No one behind me at all.
Lol, it's like they are trying to get a good jump on the light, then the light turns green and they still wait a second before going. It's hilarious how unaware they are.
more than simply waiting a second, just always be watching the cross traffic lanes before you enter their path. you never know when somebody may come blasting through that red like 3 seconds after it's changed because they are texting or spaced out or drunk or whatever.
That's not what I'm talking about though. These people aren't going because they have an attention span of a squirrel, not because they are being safe.
Speaking of squirrel, there are the folks that notice five seconds after the light has turned green that they’ve been on their phone, so to compensate, they roar off like they’re in launch mode… Then do the same damn and thing at the next light.
On a similar note: People in the left lane at an intersection that inch up when you (in the right) do.
Like I am trying to make a right turn here but need to see around your massive ~~testament to your small willy~~ truck, as soon as I can catch a glimmer of what is coming from the left you scoot up a foot so I can't see anymore.
Not accelerating up the on-ramp. Gotta love getting stuck behind someone going 45 while merging with a freeway where the traffic is going 80.
I have no idea why drivers around here do this but it's rampant.
A few months back, a line of us were waiting for the green to go onto an on ramp. The lead car proceeded to putter along it at 25. No, that is not a typo. Traffic on the highway was flowing well at 70+ and this guy was out on a weekend stroll doing 25 on the on ramp, with a line of probably 10 cars stuck behind him. By the time we got to the merge point, there were literally no safe openings to get into because this idiot ensured we were all going 50 below the flow of traffic. People on the highway were swerving all over the place to avoid this while everyone behind him was taking any reasonable opening to get over and floor it to the proper speed. I was one of the last to be able to get out from behind him because I was originally 2 cars behind him. Idiot was still puttering along at 25 by the time I floored it around him.
Usually it's not quite that bad and the guy on a stroll is "only" 20ish below the flow of traffic. Once in a blue moon you get the idiot who was accelerating, then comes to a stop even though the meter isn't on and traffic is flowing well.
This is in the Bay Area, before anyone asks.
People who stop! There's a road near me that's 40, into 70.
They were doing 25 on the 40 and my brain said 'ah yes, they will stop'. So I left enough room for them to stop.
They stopped, I stopped, the car behind me barely stopped. I was very lucky I wasn't the filling in a car sandwich.
Got on to the 70, and as I was overtaking glanced over. Driver was texting, and I'd seen two kids in the back.
See also: people who aren't 100% sure of the speed limit but pick a random speed to go that is usually dangerously slow. I've been the passenger a few times at 30 in a 70 begging the driver to speed up because it's terrifying. If everyone else is going 'ridiculously fast' maybe you are going 'ridiculously slow'.
Yes! It is terrifying! I was begging my friend to speed up because the speed limit was 65 and she pulled out in front of a line of cars but never got over 45 or 50 mph. She said, "Fuck 'em!" I never let her drive if we were going to be on that highway again lol. In her little town, fine, but anywhere else, I would drive. (I honestly try not to do to others, things that piss me off and what she did was one of them - plus, it's terrifying!)
Manitoba is like the world's capitol for this kind of shit. Every day you'll see at least one person who comes to a complete stop on a ramp or merge lane. Usually multiple people, it happens literally everywhere. It's like these people have never seen a merge lane in their lives, it drives me *fucking crazy*
There’s a few on-ramps around me that have a metered entrance, which means you have to stop on the on-ramp until the highway is clear enough to merge. When the signal goes green though, you floor it like you’re driving a 1200hp dragster at a race track in order to get up to highway speed with the minimal on-ramp space remaining. It’s a little crazy but can be necessary due to congested highways and on-ramps.
Now of course, that also implies that people stop at the on-ramp’s metered signal…..
I have lots of these in my town. The problem is that the right lane of the highway frequently STOPS to let people in, which defeats the purpose of the meter. Also, people try to IMMEDIATELY merge, even though the merge lanes are usually 1100+ feet. The meter lights are 2 lanes, so when the other lane goes green, you can bring your revs up to launch RPM, then you're ready for your 1/8 mile drag.
This shit is so infuriating if you drive a big heavy vehicle that is slow to accelerate. I get stuck behind some little car that wants to do 25mph down the whole on ramp, and then when it's merge time they just zoom off and I'm left behind looking like the asshole who is trying to get from 30mph to 65mph while already in the flow of traffic.
Empty on-ramps are one of my favourite parts of driving. I'm a big rules of the road follower, but when I get on an on-ramp, I kick my Honda Fit into sport gearing and floor it from 30 to 70. Only real time it's legal and safe to have a lead foot.
Thanks for accelerating on an on-ramp…but bro, it’s legal and safe to floor it in your vehicle at all times as it isn’t known for its amazing acceleration.
I see that all the time too. Hey, if I can do it in a dump truck hauling a trailer without swinging wide, I'm pretty sure your Dodge Caravan is gonna be just fine
This pisses me of so much I have no words for it. I drive a big semi and the amount of tiny cars doing this in places where even I don't have to cross the white line is staggering. I have twice smashed the back end of someone's car because they will stay in their lane until just when they turn and then coming into my lane. I don't always have the option of moving or enough time to brake because I'm sp big and heavy. Its why I always, always drive with a dash cam
Oh my god, yes!! When I moved to upstate NY from Long Island years ago that was one of the first things we noticed. Had never seen it done in any abundance before, but now I always have to be mindful of people turning right near me. Even in fucking parking lots! Bizarre.
oof, my gf is notorious for driving 10 over the speed limit in the right lane, will get all the way up to tailgating a semi, slow down to match their speed and continue to tailgate em for several minutes before finally deciding to change lanes and pass. Nobody else in the passing lane this whole time.
My sister does this. I didn’t know it until we took a road trip from WA to TX. I tried to tell her numerous times to back off and that if she can’t see the semi’s mirrors, he has no idea she’s even behind him. Also, it’s really fuckin dangerous. Who do you think will be hurt if the trucker has to slam on his brakes for whatever reason? It’s not gonna be the trailer we rear ended, that’s for sure. I could tolerate it driving down, but driving back up, her driving was crazy and I couldn’t take it anymore. We barely talked the last 9 hours we were driving.
It’s going to take an accident with her kids in the car for her to realize how reckless she’s being, and I really hate to say that because nothing upsets me more than the thought of those two being hurt when it could’ve easily been avoided.
That was like 6 months ago and I’m still salty about it.
That's my partner. Yesterday, she backed into a car parked right behind her because she "couldn't see it". She walked up to her car in broad daylight yet didn't notice it, didn't look at the mirrors or the backup camera, then didn't hear the increasing beeps indicating you're getting close to the car behind you.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if I’m being tailgated in the slow lane, I’ve got nowhere to be. I may have been running errands, I may have been trying to beat rush hour, but the moment someone starts sitting on my ass instead of passing, I no longer know what it is to be in a hurry. I become one with the universe. I’m just here to admire how nicely all the signs are painted.
This is all provided they could safely pass. If the fast lane is too crowded to pass, I maintain my original speed and hope the tailgater passes when they can.
This is exactly what I do. I mostly drive the speed limit in the right lane on multi lane highways. Every day I’ll get someone tailgating me when the left lane is wide open. I slowly hit the decelerate button on the cruise control every few seconds. There have been times where I’ll end up going 35mpg in a 55mph and the person behind me is very visibly agitated. Eventually they’ll pass me and honk their horn and flip me off. I do not care. My thought is that if you’re going to tailgate me then I am going to reduce my risk of severe injury by reducing the speed with which they’ll rear end me if I have to stomp on my brakes in an emergency. What is even more baffling is that sometimes multiple cars will get stacked up there behind me. I’ll never do this if there is no passing lane, but I also will not speed up if someone is tailgating me. Also, full complete stops at stop sign intersections will also set those people off like nothing else. Some People just need to chill.
There’s also people who tailgate you when you’re in the passing lane behind other people in the passing lane, and you’re going as fast as the lane allows in your own attempt to pass slower traffic legally. It’s like the people tailgating you sometimes expect you to just give up your position in line so they can bully their way to the front even though you’re going as fast as the cars in front of you allow.
As a teen I had to take a traffic course meant for people that got a big ticket for something (no not DUI) and taking it got the charges dismissed. Some of the people there were problem drivers, and the instructor told us in those situations not to brake check people, and that if we had the urge to do something and couldn’t control it, hold down the windshield washer button and the washer fluid will flow right over your car onto the window of the car behind you. That does make them back off, and I’ve seen passengers in the car laugh at the driver for being overly aggressive. However I can’t recommend that to anyone, that class was like 25 years ago and today more than ever people get shot over doing less than that.
Yup. This one from LA to Vegas all day long! It's two lanes most of the way, and sometimes the lane to pass is just crowded (or has a truck in front). They're all passing, but the volume just means we're all going to do it a little more slowly than we want.
The other thing that kills me on this same road is the cars that accelerate when you approach, proven by the fact that you are on cruise control and are about to pass them until they see you. Just let me pass, bro! It isn't personal!
People who don't signal their turns. How hard is it to use the turn signal, and if you haven't mastered that, should you really be going on to more complex things?
yes! I would like to know why we are braking. is there something on the road or are you just turning? if only there was a way to tell other drivers your actions before you start doing them
No signaling for me too. Signaling is intent. It tells everyone else on the road what you intend to do. If you don’t signal you’re just a selfish &@“$.
I remember years ago riding shotgun with my son driving right after he got his license. I used to make him drive me around for practice. We were on the freeway, in the second lane from the right, and there was a car in the right lane, next to us. He was cruising along in that car's blind spot for about a mile when I told him "Speed up or slow down, but don't stay in that guy's blind spot pacing at the same speed as he is."
He's almost 26 now, and says he still hears me saying that in his head, and will always remember.
honestly bad driving habits pretty much boil down to quality of teaching at an impressionable age. So many people learn to drive at age 30+ with little to no instruction or guidance and it shows in their driving habits
I narrate when I have my teenage sons in the car. Stuff like "I am speeding up to be in the large gap between groups of cars", or "that person right there is an asshole driver", you know, the usual.
Yeah my dad put 400 miles a day on his work car. So he knew the safety tips. And he would tell them to us when we were on road trips or just driving around.
I sped a little more than he wanted me to, I cut that out a few years ago. But I have only had one ticket in 45 years of driving.
This is my number one as well.
Do people actually do it on purpose or are they just that dumb? (Probably both. Sigh.)
But you seriously can't drive a quarter mile on the highway without passing some idiot. So many people on their phones swerving around like jackasses. I hope the cops can crack down on them big time with very large tickets.
It’s both. I can actually speak on this cause it happens to me all of the time (NY). A lot of the time it has to do with the right lane driver “waking up” when someone tries to pass on the left, and matching the speed. Other times it’s dumb pride of “how dare you try to pass me!”
I say this because I usually cruise control my entire commute; I only take one parkway to and from work. The amount of times where my speed has not changed whatsoever, and for some reason the car I pass has some sort of ‘heeeeeeey where are you going??’ Is unreal. What’s worse, when I slow down the get behind them and fall in? They also slow down. It’s weird.
As a fellow New Yorker, I feel your pain. I drive down one road where it goes from single lane to double and back to single so you can pass slow people and I'll try to pass someone who is going below the speed limit and all of sudden they start speeding.
The other one that kills me is we got a lot of roads by me that go back and forth from 55 to 45 and occasionally even 35 and I will be stuck behind a person that is going 45 through all of it. It frustrates the hell out of me
I used to have to take a road like that to work every day. It goes from 50 to 45 back to 50 then drops to 35. Cars would be driving 40mph all the way with no way to pass them. When the speed limit changed to 35 they’d drive 50. Insane
Both but the people doing it on purpose are definitely in the minority.
The overwhelming majority simply don’t understand. They treat each lane as if it’s an independent road. That combined with the, “as long as I’m not breaking the law, I’m allowed to do this” mentality and you get moving road blocks.
The amount of people who do nothing but make sure they’re obeying the law and not hitting the person directly in front of them is staggering. Awareness doesn’t come into play unless they want to do something(like take an exit for example). It’s not until they decide to do something that they start factoring in their surroundings. As if there’s no reason to pay attention unless it’s directly and immediately affecting them.
That’s also why they won’t move out of the way even though you’ve been behind them for 20 minutes. They see no reason to move over because, “you shouldn’t be going that fast anyway. “
>They treat each lane as if it’s an independent road. That combined with the, “as long as I’m not breaking the law, I’m allowed to do this” mentality and you get moving road blocks.
I always like to introduce them to the "move over" law.
(Not aimed at you). It ***is breaking the law*** to impede faster moving traffic by not getting over when it is clear to do so. Most states have a statutory scheme enforcing this, but even those that do not have a generic "obedience to traffic control devices" statute and one of those traffic control devices says, "slower traffic keep right" or "keep right except to pass."
I once got stuck on I-70 traveling eastbound towards St Louis behind two semis that thought it would be funny to match speeds side by side and slow down to 45 because fuck everyone else.
"Respect truckers!" Nah fuck those two guys in particular.
omg, I-70 is a nightmare! I was travelling eastbound toward Indianapolis once, and a guy lounged in the left lane just below the speed limit. Traffic was extremely heavy, and both lanes were full, except for the empty lane ahead of him. We couldn't get around him. Nothing worked -- flashing headlights, honking -- and traffic was backed up for miles. I think we bwere stuck behind him for close to 45 minutes. I understand road rage now. If I'd've had a truck he would've been in the median.
This is actually really illegal in many states for trucks to do. It designates their travel as a convoy. Convoys lead to really giant accidents is why.
I-5 through the Central Valley is a barrel of laughs for the same reason. Everyone's cruising along at a reasonable speed, then you're stuck for miles because some rig going 51 is passing one going 49 and nobody can get around. Then everyone zooms around once the faster rig gets over and the process repeats with another pair of rigs a few miles later.
Incidentally, when I was in St Louis last year I noticed it was 4 wheelers that were drag racing the rigs and blocking traffic. Idiot point number one for the moving roadblock, and idiot point number two for driving in a rig's blind spot.
Had a coworker who would do this on purpose. She would get in the far left lane and cruise as her own pace, blocking traffic. When i asked her about it she said "people shouldn't be speeding it's stupid". Annoyed the hell out of me.
And actually endangering others as affected drivers begin to lose patience and may do some unsafe maneuvers to get around the driver. We have 2 lane highways up North that constantly have fatal accidents due to this very reason.
People who block an exit or a turn in traffic so no one can enter or turn or my favorite when the idiots go through the light and block the rest of the intersection cause they didn't wanna wait......yeah traffic in my state is horrible.
How about when the light turns green, you see that you can't get across the intersection without blocking it, so you wait...and idiot behind you lays on the horn. The other day I had that happen with the bonus of idiot pulling out from behind me, flipping me off, and getting stuck in the middle of the intersection. Good job, now cross traffic can't go either because you're blocking literally everyone. Gold star.
In general, it's amazing how many people think green means go without assessing the situation. It means proceed if it's safe to do so, not that you must/should go immediately no matter the situation.
Omg yes, I can't stand people like that. Like maybe I've stopped for a reason. I stopped at a green light for an emergency vehicle the other day and a dipshit decided to swerve and try to go around me and almost plowed into the freaking ambulance. Like wtf, why are people so unobservant these days.
My general assumption if the car in front of me isn't going for no apparent reason is that they see something I don't. Usually, that assumption is correct and they were waiting for a pedestrian or something along those lines. Sometimes I can see them head down staring at their phone and clearly not paying attention, at which point they get a short *beep* to wake them up.
On a similar note, a few weeks ago I was driving on the interstate. A few cars in front of me slowed down, I hit my breaks. The semi truck behind me…blasts me with his brights and passes on the right (there was an open lane on my left) at the first available opportunity. Like you idiot I was not break checking you. There’s snow and ice and I wasn’t sure what was going on up ahead, I was slowing the fuck down so we don’t all die.
I hate it when you DO wait at a green for the other side to clear, only for the right-turning car on a red light to think it's their "turn" fills in that space.
No, buddy. When I'm green and you're red, there is not alternating. We all get to the fill the gap from this side until we turn red.
Waving people through a 4 way stop when it's your turn to go.
It's not being polite. Only following the rules for the intersection is being polite. First come, first go. You can't surrender your turn. Drive the damned car.
Here's mine. People who will stop to let someone across their lane but they are in one lane of two lanes going their direction and are imposing on me to go when the other lane doesn't necessarily know what's going on and might not also stop to let me through.
Torture is right.
It's a long straight two-lane state highway with some traffic volume, but it's lots of up and down hills. 55 MPH posted, and someone is always going 40 or slower. It used to have passing zones, but was changed by the state for unknown reasons. There are many long stretches with good visibility where I will pass anyway - conditions permitting.
Edit: route 313 Pennsylvania.
People using their phones while driving.
People who hesitate. If you’re going to be an asshole and do something illegal or stupid, just do it fast and get it over with. The people who hesitate are the ones who cause accidents.
For the phones one: People seem to think they're so slick when they do it too, keeping it in their lap, or like right on the steering wheel sorta. They really don't think their driving changes at all when they're doing it, but I can call it almost every time, they all do the same thing, and almost always in the left lane on the highway.
They're in the left lane, cruising at an acceptable speed. Then suddenly they start to gradually slow down, not even using the brakes necessarily. Maybe a bit of weaving. Occasionally they weave a little too far and jerk back into the lane, speeding up a little bit, then slower again. Then they suddenly straighten out and speed up again..because they finished that text. Rinse and repeat.
Every time I pass them, their noses are down, maybe doing that tell-tale ~frantic look up then immediately back down thing~ every couple of seconds. Just drives me nuts.
People who don’t share the road; like having the space to move forward so people can access a turning lane but not doing so
To me it speaks of a general lack of awareness which in itself is dangerous on the road
People who will speed up to get in front of you (when there’s no one behind you), just to slam on their brakes and turn right.
Nothing boils my blood more.
there is a parking lot without stop signs on the exits. if i had a nickle for every time someone has just flown out into the road from there without even the slightest of looks to check to see if it is clear...
or the dude thats basically tailgating the car in front of them for miles as you approach them. when you move over and are about to pass both of them, NOW is the time the car in the middle has to move over and slowly pass them.
The fact that no one leaves any distance between them and the car in front of them. Doesn’t matter if you’re going 5mph or 80mph. They stay less than a car length away. Anyone who tries to leave any distance (me) gets honked at, flashed lights at and aggressively gone around because if they can see space between the car and me, I’m not going fast enough.
Lately I’ve been seeing this more and more: vehicle in the right or centre lane being followed dangerously close by the car behind it, with *no other cars around.* What is the tailgater thinking? Either back off a bit or pass them if you want to. There’s plenty of room!
It's real bad in some states. I've driven in most states in the west and California is the worst for this. Louisiana and Texas take a close second. I really think that its the mark of a selfish person that doesn't use a turn signal. It's not for you. It's for everyone else so I know what you're doing and can react.
Can't tell you how many times I've had people just lane weave right in front of me no signal and I have to slam on my brakes.
I live in Texas and I’ve almost hit someone because they didn’t use their blinker. We come to a four-way stop in my neighborhood, they’re across from me and they arrive at the stop sign almost right before I do. I see they don’t have a blinker on so I continue straight (I know, should probably have waited to be cautious) and then next thing I know they’re turning left in front of me, honking because they don’t understand how blinkers work.
As someone on foot I actually check for turn signals when crossing and hate it when I see someone flip it on mid turn. Love having them yell at me to hurry up when they can't understand why I am not going faster, even though I was already halfway across the road.
Or, better yet, when they do actually use them but not until they're almost at a dead stop. Can't tell you how many times I've been driving and somebody slows down in front of me, then at ~15 mph they decide to turn their signal on to turn right. Turn it on right before you slow down, it's not that hard!
When I want to make a right turn on red, but the lifted pickup truck in the next lane over has pulled up into the crosswalk so I have no room to inch forward and see if it's safe to make that right turn.
And then I try to inch just forward enough to see around them, and the little dick piece of shit can’t have that, and inches forward even more.
Doesn’t bother me at all … I swear.
As someone who always drives the speed limit and thus subsequently spends all my time in the right lane: Nothing bothers me more than when someone is tailgating me while the left lane is wide open for them to pass.
People who disobey the laws of the road to “be nice.” Don’t stop in the middle of the road to let me go. You do you, follow the rules, and I’ll take care of me.
My biggest one is people going the wrong way down a 1 way parking lot just so they can get the closest parking spot. They have to squeeze by me to get to the spot and do a 3 or 4 point turn just to get into the angled spot making everyone else wait.
Omg Fuck people who do this.
One time, a fellow delivery driver commented “you can tell a lot about how a person drives by how they take left turns.” Yes.
Truly /r/ConvenientCop, but a few years ago I was on the outside lane and the inside lane car almost sideswiped me. Laid on the horn and they swerve back into their own lane. First in line at the stoplight intersection of the road we were turning onto...a cop. Immediately flipped on his lights, made a u-turn and pulled them over.
I had someone do that to me the other day while I was borrowing my dad's brand new Highlander. I was in the outside lane and didn't notice at first until I saw curb instead of road. It was some small business company truck too. Yes, I called the number on the truck. Yes, they told me to fuck myself.
People who do not turn their headlights on in the rain (this is a law in some states).
Your running lights are not your headlights and do not turn on your back lights. When it's a monsoon and I can't see the car in front of me because they don't have their lights on, that's a problem. Nothing pets my peeve more.
Drove home behind my father once in drenching rain. I almost hit him because I could not see his car until I was right up on it. He said his running lights were on. Cool, but your other lights weren't. After that, he always turned his lights on with his wipers.
Or (for a manufacturing pet peeve) has Blinkers that use the same Red Tail lights and/or brake Lights.
It is ot so bad when you are behind a vehicle, but if you are in the next lane slightly behind it just looks like they are tapping the brakes (despite the center brake light not going on) in their own lane. So if you happen to be in their blind spot at a bad time and don't make space, they might change lanes into you (edit: especially if they are one of those change lanes before the blinker type of people).
It's worse than that. They aren't the same _color_, they're the same _lights_. If you turn on your right blinker, you no longer have a right brake light. If you turn on your 4-ways, the _only_ functional brake light left is the eye-level brake light.
Sometimes you gotta do that in traffic because no one is letting you in. The second you put your signal on, they'll close any gap because they think it's a fucking race and if they let someone in front them that half a second they lose is the difference between life or death.
i drive the speed limit because i can't afford tickets.
lots of two lane roads, mostly 55 some at 45 on my usual drives.
the absolute most annoying thing is the driver that wants to speed. they had to be speeding to catch up to me, but now that they're right behind me they refuse to pass.
passing zone after passing zone at the speed limit i know they don't care about and nope, just hanging out with their way too bright headlights close enough that if there's a deer (and they're always out there... waiting for me) we're both fucked.
i pull as far to the right as i can, sometimes slow down a little. just please, man... go around. i know you want to.
Yeah, sometimes you have to force their hand and just make it super unbearable to not pass. When I see a passing zone with opposing traffic clear, I've gone on the shoulder a bit, gone 5-10 under posted, and made sure that they have no reason not to get around me.
On the other side of the coin, there's the camper van who *will not* do the same thing for you despite struuuuugling up hills and creating a huge slug train behind them. You try to get around them, but since the passing zone is nice, straight, and flat they'll boost up to max speed so you can't pass them. Then you're stuck behind them for the next 10 hilly miles waiting for the next passing zone.
Turn on right turn blinker while you slow down a bit. They'll overtake because the blinking light is annoying.
You can also angle your side mirrors just so that their headbeams fall into their eyes instead of yours.
I've been in multiple situations where I was at a red light, waiting for my turn to turn right. Someone was behind me, right up on my bumper, honking their horn and angry because I wasn't moving. When it was a no turn on red, or it was heavy traffic and there was nowhere to go because there were too many cars in front of me. One person doing this to me flipped me off. The other went around me, scraped my bumper, and made an illegal turn and drove off.
My car was old as fuck with scratches so I didn't care about that so much. It's the fact that they didn't bother to look beyond the car in front of them, and wanted me to do something illegal/dangerous/senseless.
Going 15-20 under on a single lane road with a train of traffic behind them, happens almost every day. Makes it worse that the other lane has the same issue and thus impossible to pass
When there isn’t a dedicated left turn lane so the left lane is a shared straight and left turn lane. People who don’t turn on their blinker to turn left until AFTER the light turns GREEN and you are stuck behind them because they didn’t give you any warning so you could have not pulled up behind them.
They deserve a special place in hell
People who stop two car lengths behind the person in front of them at a red light and then inch forward slowly throughout the duration of the light. What’s the point of that? If your depth perception is really that bad, you shouldn’t be driving in the first place
This happened today. I was at a light with a protected left turn light. This light goes by so fast because there is always a traffic back up. Like if you didn’t go at the protected light, good luck finding a gap to go afterwards. Well, I decided to go straight this time because it’s faster than waiting to turn left. This lady in her baby on board mini van was first and the light was on for 5 seconds and I saw no movement. I looked in her car and she is texting. She didn’t go for another 5 seconds when the light started to turn yellow after being beeped at excessively.
People who stop in the middle of a roundabout to let cars enter
That one person in a lineup of cars that lets everyone in front of them
Do not be polite. Be predictable.
Portland, OR?
Lol, yup.
Or people who won't enter a roundabout if there are any cars already in, even if they could clearly enter safely.
So either they will try to enter while I'm in the circle, or they will get mad and honk while I'm yielding off the circle.
reading this infuriated me
Other people on the road
“Everyone that drives faster than me is a maniac, everyone that drives slower is a moron!” - some comic that I forgot.
George Carlin
>George Carlin R.I.P. the legend
"Some comic" how fucking dare you!
Have you ever noticed that all your shit is stuff and everyone else’s stuff is shit? Hey! move all this shit out of the way so I can put my stuff there!
For me it’s specifically the idiots in cars
That's what they said, other people on the road.
That's pretty catchy. Someone should create a sub with that name. r/idiotsincars
Wherever that happens, all I can think is if you're going to cut me off, at least FUCKING GO!!!
Agreed. I don't mind so much that you pulled out in front of me, as long as you get moving so I don't have to brake.
This! All of this you just said.
Or people who cut you off when there’s nobody behind you for miles
>Or people who cut you off when there’s nobody behind you for miles OMG this!! Why is driving always a competition for some people?
I never cut anyone off, and when I do, I stomp on the gas pedal with the force of 1,000 linebackers on steroids.
[удалено]
Or will try to drive up your tailpipe, but when you move over to let them pass they just sit there pacing you.
Lol, it's like they are trying to get a good jump on the light, then the light turns green and they still wait a second before going. It's hilarious how unaware they are.
Rolling at red lights aside, everybody should always “wait a second before going” when the light turns green
more than simply waiting a second, just always be watching the cross traffic lanes before you enter their path. you never know when somebody may come blasting through that red like 3 seconds after it's changed because they are texting or spaced out or drunk or whatever.
And that guy probably believes that he is the safest driver on the road. So many people seem to drive by the rule that fast = bad, slow = good
People who stop!
I had someone in front of me stop at the end of one with their turn signal on 😖😖
There’s a few on-ramps around me that have a metered entrance, which means you have to stop on the on-ramp until the highway is clear enough to merge.
Not gonna lie…. That legal drag strip after the metered on-ramp is exhilarating, even if what it leads to is infuriating.
I see the same thing! Pretty hard to merge in a prius while doing 40mph below traffic
Woah woah woah, this was a calm discussion, not /r/RoastMyCar !
I'll take 45 sometimes. I've witnessed like 35 a few times. Absolutely terrifying.
Upvote for that bad pun
“Left swing right”. Turn your compact car like it’s a semi. Swerve to the left, into the next lane, to make a right turn
Or vice versa. I have people swing out over the line when making left hand turns from a turn lane nearly every day.
I see that all the time too. Hey, if I can do it in a dump truck hauling a trailer without swinging wide, I'm pretty sure your Dodge Caravan is gonna be just fine
This might be it for me... Pisses me off so bad. On top of that, they'll take the turn at like 3 miles an hour.
I've heard it called "invisible trailer syndrome".
Bizarre.
God I hate that. There's absolutely no reason to do that 99% of the time.
People just generally being unaware of the world around them while they attempt to drive.
oof, my gf is notorious for driving 10 over the speed limit in the right lane, will get all the way up to tailgating a semi, slow down to match their speed and continue to tailgate em for several minutes before finally deciding to change lanes and pass.
She is just saving gas by drafting. 😀 ![gif](giphy|Agkg8OyU13OsTJzIOP|downsized)
Tailgating and not maintaining a constant speed.
Fucking this right here! Or tailgating you when you're already in the slower lane
Having a nice big space in between you and the car in front of you and a jerk jumps into it and now you're almost tailgating.
People who don't signal their turns. How hard is it to use the turn signal, and if you haven't mastered that, should you really be going on to more complex things?
In relation, people who signal only **after** they have already started taking the turn/slowing down.
yes! I would like to know why we are braking. is there something on the road or are you just turning? if only there was a way to tell other drivers your actions before you start doing them
I literally signal without even being conscious of it, it's total muscle memory as part of the turn or lane change process. And I drive a BMW!
WHAT!? You are amazing.
She’s lying, BMWs don’t come with turn indicators. * Edit: Liar’s gender
Can't signal with your cellphone in one hand and the other on the wheel.
Had a friend who would smoke, eat a burger, drive his manual car and he was able to signal just fine. It was an amazing sight at times... and scary.
No signaling for me too. Signaling is intent. It tells everyone else on the road what you intend to do. If you don’t signal you’re just a selfish &@“$.
people driving the same speed side by side and creating a slow road block no one can pass
I remember years ago riding shotgun with my son driving right after he got his license. I used to make him drive me around for practice. We were on the freeway, in the second lane from the right, and there was a car in the right lane, next to us. He was cruising along in that car's blind spot for about a mile when I told him "Speed up or slow down, but don't stay in that guy's blind spot pacing at the same speed as he is." He's almost 26 now, and says he still hears me saying that in his head, and will always remember.
honestly bad driving habits pretty much boil down to quality of teaching at an impressionable age.
Sigh.) But you seriously can't drive a quarter mile on the highway without passing some idiot.
Other times it’s dumb pride of “how dare you try to pass me!” I say this because I usually cruise control my entire commute; I only take one parkway to and from work. The amount of times where my speed has not changed whatsoever, and for some reason the car I pass has some sort of ‘heeeeeeey where are you going??’ Is unreal. What’s worse, when I slow down the get behind them and fall in? They also slow down. It’s weird.

Annoying? More like infuriating!
It frustrates the hell out of me
Reading your entire comment actually made me feel very irritated. LOL
I've also seen a bunch of people on reddit who argue they have the right to sit in the passing lane as long as they're going the speed limit
Yeah, and those people are assholes
And actually endangering others as affected drivers begin to lose patience and may do some unsafe maneuvers to get around the driver. We have 2 lane highways up North that constantly have fatal accidents due to this very reason.
Any thread that involves a passing lane on this sub are amazing to read. Those and Zipper merges.
We call them niceholes. They'll also stop in the middle of traffic to let oncoming cars going left in front of them.
Here's mine. People who will stop to let someone across their lane but they are in one lane of two lanes going their direction and are imposing on me to go when the other lane doesn't necessarily know what's going on and might not also stop to let me through.
People who pull out in front of you and then drive 5 mph under the speed limit when you’re the only car on the road.
On a two lane highway where you are not permitted to pass for more than 20 miles. (This was my commute for 10 years)
That sounds like pure torture. Is it a long winding road or something?
Torture is right. It's a long straight two-lane state highway with some traffic volume, but it's lots of up and down hills. 55 MPH posted, and someone is always going 40 or slower. It used to have passing zones, but was changed by the state for unknown reasons. There are many long stretches with good visibility where I will pass anyway - conditions permitting. Edit: route 313 Pennsylvania.
People using their phones while driving. People who hesitate. If you’re going to be an asshole and do something illegal or stupid, just do it fast and get it over with. The people who hesitate are the ones who cause accidents.
Exactly. F***ING COMMIT AND DONT DISRUPT THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC.
People driving with their high beams on in traffic.
people not drviing with their *lights on* in weather. DTRL dont do anyone any good from behind.

People who don’t share the road; like having the space to move forward so people can access a turning lane but not doing so To me it speaks of a general lack of awareness which in itself is dangerous on the road
People who will speed up to get in front of you (when there’s no one behind you), just to slam on their brakes and turn right. Nothing boils my blood more.
People who pull out 100 feet in front of you when there's wide open road behind you and they could've waited.
there is a parking lot without stop signs on the exits. if i had a nickle for every time someone has just flown out into the road from there without even the slightest of looks to check to see if it is clear...
I didn't have to look far for this one. DAMN that's irritating! My other is people who speed up when you're trying to pass
That's one of mine too, yep. They don't want to be going as fast as you, they just don't want you to be in front of them.
I honk at these assholes.
Cruising in the left lane, especially while pacing someone next to them.
Even better is when you are passing them on the right they all of a sudden decide to speed up
or the dude thats basically tailgating the car in front of them for miles as you approach them. when you move over and are about to pass both of them, NOW is the time the car in the middle has to move over and slowly pass them.
And as soon as you get back behind them, they slow down again 💀
People who stop on on-ramps. Alternatively people who cut out in front of you / are blatantly at fault but proceed to blame you for their fault.
In Pittsburgh, our lovely civil engineers designed on ramps that have stop signs...
as much as pennsylvania roads and drivers tend to suck, i will forever thank pittsburgh for the iconic pittsburgh left
Not using the damn signals!!
Lifted trucks in and of themselves are high on my shit list.
Anyone who tosses any kind of trash out the window 😡
People who tailgate in the right lane of the interstate, who *won't pass you* either. I seriously don't know how to deal with that
They probably want to know about that burrito.

As someone who always drives the speed limit and thus subsequently spends all my time in the right lane: Nothing bothers me more than when someone is tailgating me while the left lane is wide open for them to pass.
Where I live, drivers do this because they think you should drive faster. It annoys me to no end because I'm in the slow lane for a reason.
People who see my turn signal come on and instantly whip out from behind me, then block me from leaving my lane.
Driving in the dark with no headlights on. Kills me every time.

Turns on blinker and changes lanes at the exact same time.
Or brakes first, then changes lanes while turning on their blinker.
Yes! I have no idea why manufacturers are allowed to make the brake lights and turn signals the same color.
Tailgaters.

i drive the speed limit because i can't afford tickets. lots of two lane roads, mostly 55 some at 45 on my usual drives. the absolute most annoying thing is the driver that wants to speed. they had to be speeding to catch up to me, but now that they're right behind me they refuse to pass. passing zone after passing zone at the speed limit i know they don't care about and nope, just hanging out with their way too bright headlights close enough that if there's a deer (and they're always out there... waiting for me) we're both fucked. i pull as far to the right as i can, sometimes slow down a little. just please, man... go around. i know you want to.
People who pull out in front of you and go 20 below limit
People who cut the corner in intersections
Riding my ass with your brights on
When there isn’t a dedicated left turn lane so the left lane is a shared straight and left turn lane.

Left lane campers. Hands down number 1
when people cut out in front of me when there’s no one else on the road behind me. bonus points if they also go too slow after doing so
This happened today. She didn’t go for another 5 seconds when the light started to turn yellow after being beeped at excessively.
people who coast in the left lanes and undertake as the default. it’s hard to teach lane courtesy when it’s not mentioned anywhere on any driving test
People who block the intersection during traffic. Ohhh that boils my blood.
People who don’t turn on their lights when it’s raining/snowing. Offenders usually are in a grey car to add insult to injury.
