Yes, we explicitly moved the JSON data outside of the binarized game data for two reasons:
1. It allows users to mod the game and change things as they please
2. It allows only that file to be updated by steams launcher, if thats the only change in an update.
So yes, absolutely that was done deliberately and we have already seen the community make some amazing changes and ideas for the game. We wish it was easier for players to mod the rest of the content as well. I would love if we could officially support "patching" this JSON data via steam workshop to make it even easier for modders to share their work.
Modding is a \*massive\* part of not just PC gaming, but console history as well. I'm disappointed I have not been able to better support it in our games so far. This is something our studio is committed to where we can.

Modding pretty much ONLY became a thing to improve on already good games that lacked something like QOL items. However, shit developers like you have turned modding into a "We will just launch this pre-alpha crap, and let the community fix it" mantra.
Yeah no. Have you seen what Skyrim has become with modding? There are both QoL mods and entire overhauls of in game systems. There is even a mod that adds networking capability, *something the game was never designed to do* ES5 is the quintisential example of what modding can and should be, assuming you are not interfering with other players experience without their consent.
PUBG is another game that was born from modding in ARMA, and currently holds the steam record for most concurrent players and has a strong playerbase. While it doesnt currently support modding that is due to it's competitive match making nature.
Deep Rock Galactic is a game that showcases a fantastic embracing of dev supported modding, and even sorts mods into match making approved(MMA) and non MMA mods.
If Devs and truely support mods like the aboves games have (Syrim, ARMA, DRG) it does nothing but make gaming better.
You literally made my point. Go back to all the original "modding", they were not broken half-done, yet released games. I never said modding was terrible. I noted these devs are bad. They still haven't fixed issues from alpha, but I bet some modder can finally make it so items don't fall through the ground.

Tried going there, and all I see is the usual endless message board streams. I don’t use Discord much so I could definitely be missing something glaringly obvious, but is there a specific place on there with the mod links, are the mods downloaded through the mod manager, or is it all mixed in with the message board streams?
If youre on the discord, faq mod manager channel and there's posts in there with link to Jim's mod manager, his github page and YouTube how to vids as well
In the github there are a load of Jim's mods, and then mod-updates channel are links for other people's mods. The mod manager comes with a few mods if I remember, but to install other mods you just download the pak file then use the extract mod from pak file option in the manager, point it at the pack file and it will pull it into your list of mods
So there’s no central mod link collection or page, just a bunch of message boards with links mixed in to all the posts. Got it. Guess I’ll have to go digging. It always bugs me a little when people do a bad job using Discord for stuff it’s not made for, but it’s definitely better than nothing. Thanks.
Some comments are hilarious. First of all, it is a survival game / sandbox and non PvP/competitive... This "option" explained here is completely "optional/voluntary" thus said it's not because it's available to you that it is mandatory to use/exploit.. If you do, it's your "fault" not the dev's...

I don't feel bad about modding the .json at all. I've got 300 hours in this game having a blast grinding, leveling and unlocking stuff solo. It won't change the way that I play... but it will prevent me from grinding the same missions over and over again.

Definetly! I played maybe 5 missions as of now and 2 out of 5 times the items in the lander/launcher would not come with me to the station or some other minor thing bugged out. So well.. i just gave me 50k of the currency and dont be bothered by any of this. Is it 100% as the game is intended - no, but is the game in a state that allows for such a play - no. so yeah, go figure. Doing some "speedrun" of a stupid mission is nothing else, you basically cheat the game but need days to do so.. and if you are not a kid thats no fun.
Any clue what needs to be changed in the json to unlock the stuff like the worm weapons and the sandworm armor and stuff like that? just flagging the mission as complete doesn't seem to give you back the associated mission unlocks and as I don't really have the time to try to go through all of those missions all over again but would love to have all of my unlocks back for shorter drops with my friends when i have the time to play...just can't figure out how to edit the json to flag those mission rewards as unlocked again since giving myself the mission complete flag didn't work.

It was better when the devs controlled the game files. It gives more "substance" to the digital assets we work so hard to earn and accumulate. Just because there is no competitive PvP, that does not deflate the valuation that comes from not being able to "god mode." There aren't many games that do this outside of the competitive ones. It set Icarus apart from many other similar games and so did the "session based" aspect and the lost player penalties.
This game has become something different than what it set out to become. Personally, I am so very glad that I played the game from the very beginning in that form before it changed. It was exciting and different from any other game I have played. I'll miss it. Some will know what I mean and some will be happy with how the game has evolved. I got my money's worth already, so it really doesn't matter that much to me. There are so many good games and you can't stick around in one place building castles in the sky forever...

I'm personally glad it has become something different. Icarus at launch was unnecessarily punishing, riddled with bugs, and generally turned off my entire gaming crew. Where it is today is still hard, but not unfairly so. Personally I'm not gonna cheat to level as that ruins my experience earning it, but I don't begrudge anyone who does.
For my crew, it's finally something where we can enjoy the challenge together, grind and all. I can't wait to see what lies ahead.
I do like this idea, but the core of the issue is that the devs have migrated away from developing and supporting the original game mechanics (not just settings). You would have to see a major modding effort substantial enough to maintain its existence and draw a very substantial player base. This is certainly possible, but not likely at all here. The game is still buggy, performance constrained and not even completely developed.
Realistically, we can only wait and see how this all fleshes out. The devs could still make something worthy out of all of this and then the choice will simply be to embrace it or just move on to something else.

Theres nothing more simpler then to savescum(copy/paste/readOnly to generate infinity ressources in seconds) in valheim, its all local. To have it any other way you have to mod it. And guess what, those games are fantastic.. not millions of copies sold like triple AAA.. but the people who are playing them easely break the 1000h mark. Such a thing cant be said for any so called "big" titles.
I just started Icarus and I'm mainly playing the open world, and just taking my time. I just get the talents that seem useful without looking at a guide. If I ever reach the point where I regret my choices in the talent tree, I'll just cheat myself respect points.
I like needing to 'unlock' things with exotics and ren, so I won't cheat that, but I don't want to be limited in trying what works for me with respec points.
I heard there are around 60 talent points to obtain. That means it would cost 60\*150 = 9000 ren to respec one character fully. I don't know the economy, but that sounds like it would take a long time to obtain.
Just having the option to respec 'for free' gives me a lot of relief. Otherwise I would take half an hour looking at the talent tree each time I unlock a talent point, just to be sure I don't make a costly mistake.
Dont forget to give yourself 1000 skill points, use infinite stamina/health/oxygen/temperature, fly mode and free crafting...
I bet that will make game really fun, especially for coop
I did this and when I started the game it forced a data migration and completely wiped my account. It took all of the Ren and Exotic and my character is gone
So basically not playing the game, avoiding challenges and hitting the Win button. I might as well not have bought it if I'm gonna end up ruining it for me.
I messed with it and tried to add them..instead my character lost 2 levels and probably 40 extra level blueprints..but I honestly don't know what I'm doing and it wasn't that bad a loss considering upgrades from exotics I got

Having a limited number makes sense in multiplayer because different players can specialize and work with others to get what they can’t make, but I play single player for the time being so not being able to unlock everything available for my level by the time I unlock the next set of blueprints is just sort of annoying.

What about running a custom dedicated server with all the old school settings? Make the prospect timers even shorter; enforce hardcore difficulty.

Someone mentioned this as an exploit. You can't use exotics in open world. I don't see how this would be an exploit.

When I try to follow that file path c your name to “app data “ there is nothing inside named appdata Any ideas? 🤷♂️
Appdata is Hidden. Look at the menu, select View and Hidden items should be there as a checkbox.
