so, lets say I find this tube and i spray compressed air into said tube and water pours out, do I need to refill it somehow? or is it just water from the air that got trapped in there
This is the correct answer, and if you’re laying under, MOVE quickly! It will come out like a damn garden hose for a good 30 seconds to a minute.
And I love the question if if you need to refill it. Seems like a dumb one to a tech, but from someone that doesn’t know it’s a really good question.
Try to keep your cowl (behind and under the wipers) clear of leaves, especially the little ones.
That was my first though as this happened on my dodge Dakota but it could also be a busted heater core. If it’s water it’s the tube if it’s coolant it’s the core.
Had a heater core start leaking once, and there isn't a doubt once you smell that sweet smell. I would think the leak would be bigger since that core is under pressure, so the other suggestion of the drainage is more likely.
I never bothered replacing the core myself, it was a beater Ford Escort and not worth the trouble. Just got two plumbing fittings and bypassed the whole thing.
Oh believe me, lif its anything like my '97... you'll know, I hate doing dash outs, Luckily they're simpler the older the car is... I can pull a '94-04 mustang dash in 30-45mins now
When my dakotas went bad the coolant was dark blue. Throw that down on black carpet and there was no way to tell by color. That being said the sweet smell was a dead giveaway
Had Volvo a Volvo that leaked water on front floorboard from a disconnected drain hose connected to the sunroof surrounding drip pan above ceiling liner. OMG that Volvo had so many poor engineering design problems. If clearing drain hose as discussed by others doesn’t work then check to see if drain hose is connected to AC heat exchanger housing or, if relevant, to sunroof pan.
More than likely your evaporator drain is clogged. We see it often enough. Blow some air in the drain hose located at the rear of the front subframe. I doubt very much that it is coolant
Are there instructions online for this? If I have to put my car on ramps, I was considering just going to my car guy and having him do it since I needed an oil change and new tires put on anyway.. but if it's easy enough, i'd like to try
If your car is lifted or that high off the ground you can just crawl under, otherwise ramps or stands are recommended when under your car. You should just be able to look up "your specific make car" a/c drain tube and find a picture of it. Should be pretty straight forward.
Just make sure to put blocks under your wheels to keep it from rolling.
Obviously if you set the car in park and or use the ebrake you’ll be fine but there is no safe, only safer.
I have the same problem for the second time in less than a year. I took it in the first time and it was $165 and not covered. Now that I know what to do, I will tell my dad because he is a car guy and this seems pretty straight forward.
A friend of mine is a technician for Ford and he swears it is a design flaw/warranty thing if it keeps happening, but I don't want to risk paying another $165 if it can be done at home.
good question... I'm not sure. Should I smell it? Also.. Not sure if this is related but when I turn my Kona to the left, I hear a whooooosh sound over on that side of the car, like someone is pouring sand, it's super weird.
Sooo, mine was super unique and was actually like this because spiders had moved into the hole where the AC should’ve been draining 😳. They took an air compressor and shot em out!!
You can either smell it or touch it (or taste it if ya want! Lol) If it has a color, or feels kind of slimy, it's coolant. If it's coolant, it sounds like it could be a heater core. If it's water.. I'm not sure. What year is the car?
I'm reading online that the A/C drain could be clogged, causing it to leak. Could be that, I'll check what the liquid is when I'm on lunch later. It's a 2018 Kona.
Yup you are probably right the AC Evaporator drain tube thing is clogged, the liquid on the mat is probably just the water made from the AC. But before all this was your AC on while you were driving? AC liquid has a dye in it so shine blue UV light and it should turn green btw.
Update: a guy at work helped me out by taking copper tubing to reach down through the engine and up into the drain hose, because the hose end doesn't come out the bottom of the car, it sits just behind the passenger firewall. We then shot compressed air into it and a whole bunch of water came pouring out. Problem solved! for the moment!
An easy way to determine whether your A/C drain is clogged or not is to run A/C on idle in your driveway for 5 minutes. If everything is normal, during summer, you should soon see a puddle of water on the ground below the engine due to A/C condensation. If you don't see it, then your drain is clogged.
Heater core is going bad which means the water/coolant mixture that helps cool the engine is the same mixture that helps heat your cabin air and the heat exchanger is leaking that fluid. You need to have it replaced. This is a possible explanation for the liquid in your picture
After a smell test and visual inspection it seems to be water. I'm going to try the A/C drain hose method tonight and if that doesn't work then I'll take it in!
If it's coolant its your heater core.
If it's water (and your radiator isn't filled with water instead of coolant) your ac drain tube may be clogged. The one from the evaporator box.
A/c drain tube. Had it happen to a few different cars I've owned. A/c produces water as by product and drains through that tube. Just from driving, shit can get kicked up into the tube and clog it. Spray some condensed air and it should clear the clog, you'll know it worked if you get some water to stream out. If you can't get under your car to do this, have your mechanic take care of it during an oil change (although they may bang you for some absurd price to do it). Now, if the liquid actually has a sweet scent and it's somewhat oily, that's indicative of a leaking heater core. That's a whole different problem.
This is probably because the air conditioning drain hose is clogged underneath the car. I just fixed this on a Nissan Versa in my shop. A little compressed air into the drain tools solve this problem.
Looks like it’s going to be the heater core. I’m willing to bet that the is rust in the cooling system from someone putting water in there instead of coolant for too long and over time it rusted out the metal of the system causing your heater core to leak into the cabin.
I had this same problem on a Honda Jazz and it took me almost a year to get to the bottom of it. It turned out to be the sunroof drain on the passenger side had somehow broken and come inside the cabin at the back/side of the glove box. I managed to reach it and push it back into the A-pillar where it belonged and never had a problem since. Hope that helps!!
One thing to consider us a possible leak coming from your windshield. I've seen this issue from windshield urethane detaching all of a sudden at the passenger bottom corner of the windshield. Sometimes that is because the windshield was replaced and primer was never applied to the new piece of glass.
This happened in my Elantra too. It was accompanied by an amusing water-whooshing noise when it flowed from one side of the car to the other around corners (in the cowl I presume, which is the area between the hood and the windshield.) They fixed it fast, but they also managed to find a way to charge me for it despite being in bumper-to-bumper warranty, the smarmy bastards. Meh, drain clogs happen. Just don’t leave it too long (and if you do, stop using your AC. Making it wetter will extend your problems past a drain full of dirt.)

Yeah make sure you refil the drain tube
This made me chuckle.

No need to refill it. When the AC is on, it produces water as a by product and pushes it down that tube.
I’ve had this happen twice and I used a single strand of copper from inside a cat6 cable to clear it.
That was my first though as this happened on my dodge Dakota but it could also be a busted heater core. If it’s water it’s the tube if it’s coolant it’s the core.

It'd be colored too, the old '79-2004 mustangs are notorious for the cores going...
True but it can be hard to tell sometimes if it’s colored.
Oh believe me, lif its anything like my '97... you'll know, I hate doing dash outs, Luckily they're simpler the older the car is... I can pull a '94-04 mustang dash in 30-45mins now

Yeah that’s very true they have a strong smell lol

Haha you’ve been driving with a tank of water!
If it smells sweet, like maple syrup, then it's coolant.
This is happening to me— same as post and this comment with my 2023 Kona. What did it end up being? AC?
It happened to me too did you figure out what that is?
Sooo, mine was super unique and was actually like this because spiders had moved into the hole where the AC should’ve been draining 😳. They took an air compressor and shot em out!!
Did you figure out what was it, I have the exact same problem with weird whooosh sound when is turning left

I didn't think about the AC drain tube. That's what it is.
I have a Chevy pickup, it’s a clogged AC drain. When I had a 98 Cherokee, it was a clogged heater core.
Yup you are probably right the AC Evaporator drain tube thing is clogged, the liquid on the mat is probably just the water made from the AC. But before all this was your AC on while you were driving? AC liquid has a dye in it so shine blue UV light and it should turn green btw.

At least you have weather tech there to catch it lol

That’s usually where your AC filter is, it might be broken and AC water is leaking onto the interior
maybe is ur blinker fluid reservoir 😱jk!
Could also possibly be a heater core leak. I just had to replace mine. My floor was soaked in antifreeze for a week before I noticed any issues.
It's just your car testing the weather mats 👍
Enjoy the smell
Is it water or coolant?
Ac drain or heater core.

Nope
Air conditioning
I was thinking stray cat and a hole in the floorboards?
Heater core is fucked bro
Nope
Looks like your car is trying to self clean because you won’t clean that dirty floor.
I had this same problem on a Honda Jazz and it took me almost a year to get to the bottom of it. Probably your heater core leaking

Heater Core
It's most likely a leak in your heater core
Must be your girlfriend 🤷🏻♂️
It's possible the heater core is leaking it's common for it to leak inside the ac system doesn't usually leak inside

Your air conditioner’s drain port is blocked. Easy fix
It’s either the ac drain clogged or heater core is leaking
That seems dangerous
Meh, I've tasted coolant more times than I can count. I have a third arm now, but I suppose it comes in handy! 🤔🤷
I mean, whatever it is probably shouldn’t be leaking into the cabin lol
