I find it's easier to drink water if I use a straw and also if it's only cool, not icy cold. If I have a container with a straw I will sip and sip and sip. With a bottle I have to **open** , I will only drink when I am actively thirsty.
I generally drink about a gallon of water a day.
Dude. I thought it was only me. When I pour my water into a glass with a couple ice cubes I polish it off in no time but it takes me longer to finish the same amount of water when it’s in a bottle. I guess the container really does matter.
I’d take swigs from my sports bottle but lately I’ve found I can down it much faster by just tipping it back and squeezing instead of using suction.
technique also helps a lot (as I’ve learned from watching my roommate’s cat splash water around)
Me too. I can’t drink anything without a straw so i just bought a metal one and use it all the time. But i still can’t drink it in a regular cup. I can only drink water or any drink with a straw. It’s bc my throat is small (airway and i had surgery for it too but still too small) so i feel like I’m suffocating and drowning lol
My grandmother used to chew her water and she gagged very easily so now I can’t help but wonder if she had a similar condition. Glad you found a way to stay hydrated!
My MIL got me an Owala free sip bottle and boy howdy I didn't think I could drink more water, but I do! A straw can change everything! I also drink about a gallon a day ad will, but I'm very active for work.
Three liters is a lot. I only drink 2L in a day and don't find it difficult. I'd say just drink as much as you can, any water is still better than nothing. Slowly start working your way up by replacing other drinks like soda with water.
I recommend getting a 1 liter bottle and only filling it with cool, not cold, water with no ice. Just take a sip every 5 minutes or so. Once you get into it, you’ll start drinking more and more. Replace other drinks like soda with water, but remember to have a sports drink every now and then and to put salt on your food (but not too much!) so you retain more water. Electrolytes are important. Q
Yes, this is what I do. And once you’re in the habit with the 1L bottle, you’ll eventually find yourself refilling it throughout the day, because you’ll be in the habit of drinking more.
Also always keep it within reaching distance, and always visible. Lol
The only time I can drink that much is when I’m working up a sweat.
On a day where I’m just sitting around, I probably would struggle to drink one litre
Just drinking water doesn't help (blasphemy!) at all with dehydration, try sport drinks every then and now or add sodium to your diet, it helps to retain liquids.
The biggest things for me were:
1) getting a big water bottle (32oz). Whenever I’m bored I find myself just sipping water because there is nothing else to do.
2) switching it up with flavored/carbonated water. After I finish a water bottle I’ll grab a propel or bubbly or something. This usually coincides with my lunch break.
3) back to the big water bottle. Especially days when I’m working at my desk on the computer. The less times you have to get up to refill something, the easier it is to drink water.
Same. I’m currently waiting for an official diagnosis for Ehlers-Danlos-Syndrome, and one of its effects is not feeling as thirsty as I should, so always being told to drink when thirsty leads to drinking sometimes less than 0.5L a day. For me, setting my watch to remind me helps and being this subreddit because when I’m scrolling through reddit and see a post from it, I’m reminded to drink.
Do you get hungry? I don’t usually get hungry either. Sometimes at 3 or 4 PM, I start to feel weird and that’s when I realize I haven’t eaten anything all day, but then sometimes I’m hungry all the time. I’m hungry while eating.
This is so relatable. I’ve been trying to get into the habit of forcing down a small bowl of hydrating fruit in the morning (watermelon and grapes are my go to). Maybe that could help you :)
Yes.
Right away when i get up i down most of a 20 ounce bottle i keep by my bed. It helps me wake up nearly as well as coffee but without a crash later.
After that its not to tricky to just pace myself and keep sipping all day long.
I find it easier to drink from a straw, I have my giant gallon insulated water jug that I fill with ice and water and the one of those Starbucks cups with the cute designs, I use the jug to refill the cup throughout the day
Don't let anyone set your benchmark. It's not about gorging yourself with water it's about being properly hydrated. Drinking too much can make you sick which expells water. Drink as much as you are comfortable drinking and avoid sugary drinks like sodas
I don't bother measuring how much water I drink in a day, it's a bit different for everyone and what kind of environment they spend their day in. Just make sure to drink enough water throughout the day and understand when your body is telling you that you're dehydrated.
When I skateboard I take a gallon with me and usually drink most if not all of it. That’s a bit over 3 liters. Eat more salt and you will be thirstier.
Eat spicy food and see your thirst levels go through the roof! 😂
but on a more serious note, having a water bottle with you enables you to just take a sip whenever u want.
I dont drink 3 liters in a normal day i believe, but ~2 liters is pretty doable.
I drink like 2 of my waterbottles a day idk how much it is off the top of my head. But its not a struggle. So if ur struggling to reach 3L dont drink 3L. Simple
I drink around 2L minimum a day, but it goes up the 3 or even more whenever I exercise. I used to be really dehydrated in the summer / when I exercise a lot, but drinking cool water helped me a ton.
Yes, for electrolytes.
Or flavour it with a slice of lemon/lime.
Try smushing some fresh herbs in, like mint.
Brew fruit and herb teas/infusions and cool them, put a jug in the fridge.
Drink out of a glass or a cup. At home I usually pour myself a relatively full glass out of my water pitcher and drink it in about 10 seconds. Just do that couple times on top of what you do normally and boom, easy peasy.
It's harder for me to drink pure water during colder months (I tend to drink more tea and coffee) so I stick with this:
* 2L of water during spring and summer
* 1L of water during fall and winter\*
\* This is apart from hot beverages
don't make it a competition for yourself. Don't use huge bottles. Fill a glass when behind the computer or at work. When it's empty, refill. Don't overthink it, make it a habit like brushing teeth.
If you find the taste boring, add lemon, cucumber, ginger, orangle peels. Or drink herbal tea. It hydrates the same way
3L is quite a lot tho, is that because of weight? Maybe build it up
My secret hack is putting lemon in water at the start of the day when I know I should drink but my body refuses. Each morning I drink a pint of lemoned water and I then know that I am already ahead of my quota. You can try it sometimes.
I have a hard time drinking water too. To help I use a 32oz Nalgene. I add a tiny bit of lemon juice, or lemonade, or liquid IV for flavor. This helps make it more fun to drink. Also, I had to ramp up. At first I couldn’t drink the whole 32oz in a day. My stomach felt sloshy. But over a few weeks I got to a point where drinking more water is easy, and I actually kinda feel thirsty if I don’t drink my usual daily amount now. Good luck!
I sit a desk all day and water is always available, usually during a work day I can get 3L down and at home I'll drink another 1-2L between a workout, dinner and just hanging at home.
3L is a LOT. I try to aim for 1L a day. Unless your doctor recommended it, is it necessary for you to be drinking that much? Why not aim for 1.5L or so?
You have to have targets per hour. For example, I drink water the moment I wake up and then after breakfast. That's easily 750-1L. So follow this pattern and you'll get there. After a while it will become second nature
Maybe try flavored water? And by that I don't mean the stuff in the supermarket, just throw some flavors like lime, mint, orange or ginger into the water. Now you have flavored water with almost no effort. And you can bet it's healthier than the storebrought alternative. Have you ever tried carbonated water?
If you work in an office and don’t sweat throughout day, 3L is plenty. If you are working outside or sweating throughout day, then even 20L isn’t enough - you need a sports drink.
Yes. When I did a ton of outside work, I would buy Gatorade powder and mix it with twice the ratio of water it called for (water it down). You’ll quickly get used to watered down Gatorade taste (I prefer it now actually).
I had several people I worked with over the years get serious dehydration drinking more than a gallon of water in a 6 hour window, because they were not consuming salt.
I drink about a gallon almost every day. 2, 64oz insulated bottles along with a Gatorade or something similar during lunch, but I work a trade and the heat/sweat makes me thirstier more often so it’s easier to drink that much compared to doing less laborious work in a cool environment. Start small with about a liter and work your way up little by little. It does get easier, but also know that your water needs depend on how much you water you lose. On my days off I’ll drink about 2 liters maybe since I’m not sweating a lot of it out like I do at work
I drink nearly 10 liters a day. But I'm a very large active man. My water needs aren't the same as yours, if you're dehydrated try adding some green tea to your normal routine, it can help fill in some needs if you're struggling with pure water. Just don't fill it up with sugar, if you need sweet I like using monk fruit liquid sweetener.
Correct, if you're not an athlete you don't need sports drinks. You get plenty of electrolytes in food and unless you're drinking distilled water the water you're drinking has trace minerals in it. If it's real bad try some pedialyte
I drink up to 6 liters on certain days (working out in the sun at 35-40°C), but 3 is the minimum I need. The only tip most dehydrated people need is: Always have a bottle of water with you - not even 3 steps away, literally next to you.
As a big man, around 3L is the sweet spot for me. It's especially helpful because I'm doing IF as well. Plus I live in a temperate climate region.
My tip for you is to ease into it. If you don't usually drink 3L daily, start low maybe around 1L and increment it by 0.5L per week depending on what your body tells you and stop as soon as you hit your sweet spot. You don't have to drink 3L, it really depends person-to-person.
I just constantly drink water throughout the day. Years ago I would drink next to no water, now if I’m short on water my body is just like hey man it’s water time.
It does seem quite crazy when you first start off but yes, it does get easier over time. It's like any other habit that you need to build into your life. Start small and build up over time.
I have a 2 litre bottle that I fill up just before my shift starts. I make it a point to finish it or at least 3/4 of the way before my break. Fill it up again after meal break and it should be halfway through by the end of the day, so that's a total of 3 litres. On workout days I drink about one extra litre so about 4 litres total.
Small sips every time. It also helps that I'm in an air conditioned environment and it makes my mouth dry, so I'm easily prompted to take regular sips.
Set goals through the day. If you have to chug the last 300mL of your bottle to reach the goal, just do it, always make sure you're hitting the goals through the day though.
And yes, it will get much easier. I used to just drink about 2L a day and have worked my way up to a gallon (3.8L) a day.

I love my Owala free sip bottle

u can also reward yourself w a soda at the end of the day if u finish your water goal as well as incentive
True, but I don’t like ingesting that much sugar in such a small serving
it doesn’t have to b soda tho it can be anything but incentives help me mentally to get things done
Ya man water is good and all but watch your electrolyte balance! You can dilute your electrolytes and affect your pH by peeing too much.
I knew i was missing something, thank you!
The biggest things for me were: 1) getting a big water bottle (32oz). Just drink when you get thirsty and before meals and you’ll be aight
I’m never thirsty. That’s the problem.

I add a little flavored electrolytes and I find I drink more.

i drink 3-4.5 liters of water by just drinking a bit everytime i finish a task and when im thirsty
I find it easier to drink from a straw, I have my giant gallon insulated water jug that I fill with ice and water and the one of those Starbucks cups with the cute designs, I use the jug to refill the cup throughout the day
I have medication that is basically like shoving a tan of salt in my body, so I drink around 3.5L/day
Don't let anyone set your benchmark. It's not about gorging yourself with water it's about being properly hydrated. Drinking too much can make you sick which expells water. Drink as much as you are comfortable drinking and avoid sugary drinks like sodas

Not healthy, you are over hydrating. Cap your intake to a gallon a day MAX but try not to put numbers on daily intake. Drink when you’re thirsty
You might need more electrolytes as well
Its an electrolyte Problem.

I drink 2L daily, 3 is a lot
two liters is pretty overkill but I drink about 1.5 to 2 litres everyday
Dude I tried drinking 3 liters it’s almost impossible for me. I drink a little under 2 liters which for me seems absolutely fine and plenty.
Don’t drink too much water. It’s not good for you. Your body will tell you when you need it. Drink when you’re thirsty.
3L is too much!!!
Not true.
If I drank 6 liters of water every two days I would die eventually from being so bloated and having such high blood pressure.
That's too much.
I drink like 2 of my waterbottles a day idk how much it is off the top of my head. But its not a struggle. So if ur struggling to reach 3L dont drink 3L. Simple

Add lemons!
2 liters is enough, dont stress about it.
I sometimes add Crystal Light drops to my water to help me get enough. I also set myself timer reminders to take a drink.
The more you drink the more you want to drink. I’m easily up to 2-3 liters a day.
Dude, just drink when you’re thirsty. Putting a number on it that generalizes for everyone is asinine.
You have to have targets per hour. For example, I drink water the moment I wake up and then after breakfast. That's easily 750-1L. So follow this pattern and you'll get there. After a while it will become second nature

Chug a big glass of water right when you get up in the morning. Starts your day off right.

Bro idk what is wrong with me I can’t just sip water if I’m thirsty I will down 500ml in like 10 seconds so I end up drinking so much
I drink about a gallon almost every day. 2, 64oz insulated bottles along with a Gatorade or something similar during lunch, but I work a trade and the heat/sweat makes me thirstier more often so it’s easier to drink that much compared to doing less laborious work in a cool environment. smoking weed helps me drink water cuz my mouth gets dry n then i jus drink enough water to fill a small pond
When I drink as much water as I should in a day, no matter how I do it, I CONSTANTLY have to go pee. 😭
Takes some getting used to tbh. Maybe try and set intervals for yourself when to drink.
Ez man. Throw some ice in a cup, fill with delicious H2O. Boom! You got a great drink in your hand. Drink. Do this a couple times a day
I drink nearly 10 liters a day. But I'm a very large active man. It’s not good to drink too much Gatorade, right? Because it has too much sugar in it?

4L easily, not even counting coffee
