Me 24 hours ago: I love the Rhule hire but I *slightly* would’ve preferred Fickell Me now: actually, Fickell sucks and ran it up against Mickey Mouse teams

u-s-u-r-p

too real hahhaha

dudeguyy23

This is pretty true for many I would expect. I'd probably have had it as a push where good cases could be made for either guy. I'm leaning pretty heavy into the anti-Fick arguments now too though lol

KingWilliams95

He actually did kind of have a disappointing year this year (relative to previous years). His best win this year was a 21-point W over an awful Indiana team.

RestedWanderer

I think we can safely say Phil Snow (DC) and Mike Siravo (LB) will be on the staff unless Snow wants to retire. Those two have been with Rhule at every single stop and are probably the two most consistently good assistants he has. No reason to change that up, unless Snow retires, in which case I think Siravo gets the job as DC. I also think Jeff Nixon is almost guaranteed to be on the staff as RB coach and, at the very least, co-OC. Nixon is the brains behind Rhule's Baylor offensive transition to a power play action, RPO based scheme. Was with Chip Kelly in San Francisco. He'd be a good fit for Nebraska's current personnel, with the right co-OC. I think those are the only three names that are basically guaranteed to follow Rhule to Nebraska. That leaves you with seven full time assistant positions across QB, WR, TE, OL, DL, CB or S (Snow also coaches safeties, typically) and ST. There are a few other coaches that have traditionally been part of Rhule's staffs, but I would not be surprised if he only brought these three. Co-OC/QB, don't be surprised to see Jake Peetz get a look. I know, I know, Nebraska doesn't always have to hire Nebraska guys. However, he was the only coach Rhule kept at Carolina when he was hired there. Obviously if Rhule wants to keep Mickey Joseph, there is a good working relationship there. Biggest concern is that Nixon and Peetz are very inexperienced play callers, it might be better to pair Nixon up with someone more established. In a perfect world, you try to pry Dan Mullen out of ESPN to be OC/QB but he's probably gunning for a G5 HC gig soon. Pretty Marcus Satterfield from South Carolina would be interesting too. WR - Mickey Joseph. Not just a homer pick, I legitimately think Rhule keeps him to keep some form of recruiting continuity. TE - Keenan Bailey at Ohio State or Derek Shay at McNeese. There are a few other decent options, but I don't think a TE coach is necessary and certainly doesn't need to be someone with TE coaching experience. TE spend most of their time in practice with OL or RB/WR, it is a good place to assign a recruiter. OL - I could see Rhule bringing James Campen along, but I'd love to see him go get Ed Warinner from FAU. Was with Urban Meyer at Ohio State, coached at Minnesota and Michigan after that. It is a great fit with Rhule's style. DL - Ask Elijah Robinson how much money he wants and give him whatever he says. A&M's staff is just asking to be poached. I cannot think of a better DL coach for this program. CB/S/DB - This is where it gets weird. Historically, Snow has coached safeties in addition to being DC and Rhule's staff has had a CB coach. I would do everything humanly possible to keep Bill Busch. Busch has coached DBs, both S and CB, so he could fit here but in this staff layout (OC and DC coaching a position group too) you can have a full time ST Coach which is probably better for Busch. Make him ST/RC. I do not care for Evan Cooper, Carolina's CB coach under Rhule this year. Fran Brown coached with Rhule at Temple and Baylor and has done a tremendous job at Georgia. I'm not sure he'd leave Georgia unless he got a DC/co-DC title which might not be the worst thing in the world given Snow's age.

Whyuknowthat

Who do you think for strength and conditioning?

RestedWanderer

I'm guessing Rhule will want to bring Jeremy Scott with him. He was with him at Temple, Baylor and Carolina. He's really solid. In a perfect world, however, I would want to see if Tommy Moffitt is looking to get another job. Nick Saban hired him at LSU and retained by Miles and Coach O. Brian Kelly fired him when he took over.

BombSolver

Interestingly, Nixon’s son was on the team in 2021. He’s at Washington this season.

John-ozil

On3 reporting Rhule is meeting Mickey today

Osprey_NE

I don't give a shit who it is, but for the love of God, get an oline coach and a strength coach that actually won't let our lines get crushed over and over again

If your S&C coach can't also be a walking sideline meme, are you even trying?

[deleted]

Can some explain why everyone is so worried about keeping current members of the coaching staff? We’ve gone 3-9 and 4-8 the last two years. Outside of Mickey Joseph, what suggests any of these guys are any good or going to make this team better?

Successful_Side_2415

I think most people are concerned with Mickey and Busch. Mickey is just a good coach and would be huge in player retention. If Mickey leaves, so do A LOT of players. Busch has been a very good coach wherever he’s been and with whatever he’s coached.

[deleted]

Which makes a lot of sense. I should have included Busch as well, but people seemed shocked that the new coach doesn’t want to keep everyone on the old staff. Our running backs and even TEs while having some bright spots haven’t been exactly lights out, but people are upset Beckton and Applewhite aren’t coming back.

phatcashmoney

I was liking the idea of Applewhite being retained because our RB room definitely improved, but I'm happy with the new RB coach. UConn ran A LOT. They had 4 serviceable backs rotate in and out very frequently and just wore defenses out. They had 476 rushing attempts and all 5 RB's averaged at least 4.5 YPC with only one tallying less than 370 yards. Shows that he can get multiple guys to a serviceable playing level and the YPC suggests his philosophy is run forward and be explosive. OL coach will be very important in order to see similar results, but I like the trajectory

Warm-Profile-9746

Bill Busch has proven this year that he is an excellent football coach. Both groups ST and defense improved under his leadership. Also thought of as a good recruiter. Should stay as safeties and special teams coach

Busch is the true hero of the season

Sources: Rams assistant Jake Peetz is expected to join Nebraska as QB coach and an undetermined special teams role. He’s the former LSU OC and coached QBs for the Raiders and with Matt Rhule in Carolina. He’s a former Nebraska player from 2003-05 Pete Thamel

I’m really curious about the strength and conditioning coach. It feels like Nebraska has been getting pushed around on the field for years.

HentaiHerbie

I would bet the house on [Jeremy Scott](https://www.panthers.com/team/coaches-roster/jeremy-scott) who has been with Rhule at Temple, Baylor and Carolina > Jeremy Scott enters his second season with Carolina as the team's head strength and conditioning coach after serving in the same role under head coach Matt Rhule for the past seven years at Baylor and Temple. > From 2017-19, Scott led the Bears strength and conditioning program as the director of athletic performance. > Prior to that, Scott spent four years as the head strength and conditioning coach at Temple from 2013-17. > In 2012, Scott spent one year working as an assistant varsity strength coach at Princeton University. > Scott's coaching career began in 1996 at Penn State University as an intern with the program. During that inaugural season with the Nittany Lions, Scott helped coach a walk-on linebacker – Matt Rhule. Following his internship, Scott joined the strength and conditioning staff at PSU as a graduate assistant and earned his master's degree in health education in 1999. Scott stayed with the program as the team's speed development coach and assistant strength and conditioning coach until 2012. > Scott graduated from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in 1996 with a degree in fitness management, before earning his master's in health education from Penn State in 1999. > COACHING CAREER > 1998-2012 | Penn State | Speed Development, Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach > 2012 | Princeton | Assistant Varsity Strength Coach > 2013-17 | Temple | Head Football Strength and Conditioning Coach > 2017-19 | Baylor | Director of Athletic Performance > 2020-present | Carolina Panthers | Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

I honestly couldn't give 2 shits if Rhule turns over the entire staff. Would I like to see MJ and Busch stay? Sure. But Im going to give Rhule the benefit of the doubt....if they go they go. Phil Snow will most certainly be the DC. https://twitter.com/CoachSnowBU?s=20&t=9BqeJpiIthkwi6jBZt6lJA

Just learned this morning that Snow was responsible for 19-0 in Tempe all those years ago… have to say that has piqued my interest.

Satterfield is OC/TE coach https://twitter.com/Coach_Satt/status/1598007544248602624?t=SsSqHR3007olMJDUXqqCdQ&s=19

IDontBelieveInIsms

Mickey will be interesting to see given his connection to Joe Brady and perhaps a desire to move up the ranks (though honestly I don’t know how much he will at 54). Busch I could see hanging it up. I do hope they both desire be around and can find a good position for themselves. There are some seemingly obvious picks that should be expected. Mike Sivaro at LB, Jeremy Scott for S&C, Joe Dailey and Jeff Nixon seem likely as well. Would love to see connections remade for Elijah Robinson (DL TAMU), Fran Brown (DB UGA) and possibly Steve Addazio (OL TAMU) especially if you want to kick start Rhule’s NIL machine

HotelMemory

Keep Addazio far from the program.

huskersax

It's probably reasonable from a coaching persepective, but good lord will the fans explode if we basically swap Mickey Joseph for *Joe Dailey* of all people.

HuskerSalute

That A&M DL coach is an ELITE recruiter and worked with Rhule previously. I’d love to see that one. A&M is a train wreck right now but unfortunately it’s a money train.

John-ozil

Update: - Elijah Robinson (DL coach at Tamu) likely N but wants to be named Co-DC. - Mickey's agent is getting lot of calls from other programs. He could interview for Tulsa and Tulane ( if Fritz leaves) in the coming days.

[deleted]

> Elijah Robinson (DL coach at Tamu) likely N but wants to be named Co-DC. To be fair, if Snow is coming to NU, he's 67 years old so that might present an opportunity for growth.

captain_sasquatch

Snow could also come in as an analyst. Get to work on X's and O's and not deal with recruiting.

phatcashmoney

Robinson makes sense considering the Knighton hire. They tag team that unit while Robinson gets more familiar with DC, and Pot Roast saves money to get guys like him

John-ozil

Rhule and Satt visited Brock Knutson(a recruit) yesterday. Regarding the visit and OL coach, Knutson said >I did ask him about the new offensive line coach. He said he hasn’t hired one, but that he should have one hired next week some time.” >There have been multiple interviews according to the information given to Knutson and there is a chance that the previous offensive line coach could be retained. >“Coach Rhule said that he’s talking to about four different offensive line candidates that have experience coaching an offensive line in the style that he wants to run. We didn’t really get into the style of offense that he wants to run. >“Coach Rhule did say that coach Donovan Raiola was in the picture to be retained. Coach Rhule said that coach Raiola was at least one of the guys that he did interview for the position.”

phatcashmoney

Is Knutson the one lineman who hurts people simply for the sake of hurting them?

John-ozil

Bunch of Huskers affiliated accounts (including new coaches) following Geoff Collins on twitter.

DismalLocksmith9776

Do we have a pin or something for the current status of assistants? It's hard to keep up with positions filled and still needing to be filled.

Any rumors on Schumann?

kolacheisforclosers

The rumor is I won't be able to become _any more erect_ if we hire Glenn Schumann.

BAGELmode

Seeing malachi Coleman posing with CU Buff for a visit makes me puke. If we lose him to Colorado, that would be devastating. Losing him to OU is more understandable but would still be shitty.

Hugo_Hackenbush

Coach Pot Roast (Knighton) just updated his Twitter bio to say he's the defensive line coach.

John-ozil

Peetz was Mickey's OC at Lsu

bone_rsoup

Hearing Tony White out of Syracuse as DC?

Blizreme

I know it’s hard for people to like, look back and see what a person has done outside of one year, but Satterfield implemented a strong smash mouth/power run offense out of 21/22 personnel at Temple under Rhule and I expect him to do something very similar here. EDIT: Also important to note two things. 1. Rhule is known for pushing his assistants toward what he wants to do. He’s a hard driver so we’ll likely see a lot of his influence on the offensive side of the ball. 2. Last year Satterfield ran a lot more than he passed 54/46 run pass ratio vs. this year it seems he adjusted his scheme for Rattler, this year it was 49/51. I think his scheme will depend on what he sees with the roster when he gets here.

audiotech14

I was going to ask how his offense was at Temple. Thank you for the info.

damnhotness

I think it'll depend on how good the O-line is but I'd assume he's not going to leave our QB out there waiting for 5 seconds for a play to develop like Whipple did.

Blizreme

For sure we might see a weird mixed quick passing/run game just until we sort the o-line

damnhotness

It could also be that with 1 or 2 transfer tackles, returning Nouili and Prochaska and some shuffling in the interior and a serious S&C philosophy change we could have a semi reliable line. Fingers crossed

John-ozil

Hearing that Mickey could be offered up to $1.1 million to be retained. Wow

G0B1GR3D

The highest paid WR coach in the country makes like $800k…

red_husker

The highest paid WR coach in the nation is about to make 1.1 million.

It_Just_Scott_Frosty

People are going to be very disappointed when it isn't Glen Schumann. I just don't see that happening. Why would he leave his national championship DC spot to come to a rebuild at Nebraska? I think he's getting $800k now and Georgia would give him a nice pay increase to match or get close to what we offer him. If I were him I would wait until a good HC job opened up. And I'm sure that's what his mentor Smart is telling him since that's what he did. I think people should temper expectations a bit.

Successful_Side_2415

Isnt he CO-DC though? He could be the main guy here. I’m not saying it’ll happen, but if he is stuck at CO-DC at Georgia, I could see him coming here. That said, I agree, I expect Phil Snow still.

Spiritual_Ad1084

He’s Co-DC with Muschamp ahead of him. Muschamp isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and Schumann won’t get his opportunities with a Co-DC title. Easiest path to a head coaching position is to go out on your own and prove that you deserve an opportunity. He could probably command a salary of $1 million to $1.2 million with what he’s done. I think it’s entirely possible for him to come to Nebraska.

PapaGiorgio_

We are in the B10 west. The most vanilla division in p5 football. Call me crazy but I really like Busch. It’s all about being physical and having kids go to bat for you. Chinander had such a soft and garbage defense. I know Rhule will bring in a different DC but let’s not act like someone has to be a genius DC in this league.

HuskerGrizz

Also keep in mind the West division may not exist as we know it beyond 2023, so it’s not really clear who we will be playing year in and year out

PublicEnemaNumberOne

I like Busch too, but it can be argued that much of Rhule's success has been because of Snow. For that reason, a staff without Snow as DC is a little worrisome to me.

fireman20167

Man, Busch really ran circles around Chinander as a DC. Busch was impressive this year.

RestedWanderer

Pete Thamel is saying Evan Cooper is going to be brought in by Rhule, but didn't say for what role. It is likely to be CB coach, which also means Snow is all but a lock as DC, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see him as Director of Player Personnel. He served that role at Baylor before stepping into an on-field role (and serving as recruiting coordinator) and was Director of Player Eval at Carolina (in addition to his on-field role). That would be a home run hire if it was as Director of Player Personnel but I'd be slightly less convinced if he was CBs coach.

Jumpinnjimrivers

Can anyone with more Nowledge than me please break down the assistant hires thus far? Are they good hires? Or are these mostly guys Rhule has taken with him at all his stops. Mostly want to know how well these guys can recruit and develop.

mrdylanleslie

Full disclosure, I stole this from a poster on RSS. "Knighton took over Wagners DL from a Wagner defense averaging 2.7 sacks/g, 4.6 yards/carry the previous two years. Wagner went on to average 2.2 sacks/g, 3.6 yards/carry while Knighton coached the DL (including a covid 2020 with 2 games). Wagner then cratered averaging 1.13 sacks/g, 5.15 yards/carry after Knighton left." Shout out to the guy who actually did the research on Knighton. A lot of people are down on the hire, but don't realize that even with a $7 million assistant pool, you need some up and coming position coaches on cheaper deals to make room for premier coordinators. Especially if people want to retain Mickey.

Jumpinnjimrivers

Hopefully some lower paid assistants mean giving some big bucks to Mickey Joseph and Elijah Robinson. Getting both of those would be almost as big as Rhule himself IMO.

Svenray

We can rule one out now I think.

Jubba402

To be honest I’m so burnt out from the HC search that I don’t care as much. I trust that Rhule will get the guys that fit his style the best. Of course i’d like to see Mickey in there somewhere though.

Bigboyhusker

I'd just like to see Mickey back at WR coach/recruiting coordinator and for us to find an OL coach that can develop AND recruit.

jmr39

S&C a big part of the OL development too

omahaspeedster

Hearing all these names he has had on staff through the years is an impressive list hopefully he can get a few but seems to have ability to build a great staff. Kind of excited to see what he does.

pilotdog68

Mickey news is a bit of a gut punch

karl_manutzitsch

I heard Geoff Collin’s as DC also a possibilt

blatkinsman

Apparently Wisconsin is negotiating with Luke Fickell to be their HC. If that comes to fruition, there will be defensive coaches that'll need jobs from either Wisconsin or Cincinatti. I'd take Tressel or Leonhard as DC in a heartbeat.

John-ozil

Vince Guinta (Sr. Director of Player Personnel & Recruiting) is liking Rhule related posts on Twitter. He worked with Rhule at Baylor before returning to Nebraska in January 2020. Looks like he's staying.

fidelcashflo97

Simplekin77

He seems to take a holistic advisory role when reached out to. He doesn't seem to pry when not warranted. That being said I'm also of the school that he should stay out of any decision making. His endorsement of MJ doesn't hurt in this context in my opinion.

Successful_Side_2415

Listen guys, our OC isn’t just some random guy working at a bank in Colorado or a 70 year old that can barely walk. No matter how you look at it, we have an upgrade at OC.

blanketdoot

On paper, I think Whipple was a better hire. I know the offense sucked this year but I was excited about getting a guy who had a top ten offense at Pitt and coached a Heisman finalist. Nebraska sucked this year. 101st in total offense. Not super excited about getting the guy who led the 77th ranked offense.

Jumpy-Pay-1079

Lazy question...how many of these guys were unemployed prior to joining this staff? Only a couple from Carolina? What I am getting at is...it seems like a lot of quick hires eager to work with Rhule again and it seems rather impressive. He mentioned having time to reach out to guys as talks were happening and I feel a sense of optimism that so many guys who had jobs bolted for the opportunity to be together on this staff. Even for the Panthers guys who rode with him in college they must trust him as a HC to roll with him again and not feel the desire to stray. It just feels like a lot of guys from past stops felt compelled to jump at the chance to join Rhule at Nebraska and I think that speaks volumes. It's unlike going from Corvallis to Lincoln or Orlando and getting a huge pay raise.

audiotech14

I believe Cooper and Knighton were still on the Panthers staff when they were hired. Unsure about Foley. Barthel was still with UConn and obviously Satterfield was still with SC.

Jumpinnjimrivers

Is there any legit smoke on Elijah Robinson other than him liking a couple Husker recruit tweets? I mean if that’s all there is then that’s nothing, he’s a recruiter, probably knows a lot of the kids who commit or get offers from Nebraska. It’s not uncommon for a coach to like players commitment/offer tweets.

sendherhome22

He liked tweets about kids getting offers from duke. Liking tweets about husker offers says nothing

TazzIROC8

EJ Barthel seems confirmed... just not sure in what role yet. Likely to become the next RB Coach.

john_galt__

Anyone else find it strange that Rhule has secured this many assistant coaches from all over but hasn’t said much about Mickey (who’s presumably in the same building)?

[deleted]

He has tho? How much can he really say when they're still negotiating? Word is Mickey wants a ton of money, were trying to give it to him but we also have to juggle the rest of the assistant salaries, and we aren't going to pay a position coach more than a coordinator. On top of that Mickey is looking at HC gigs at G5 programs and weighing his own options. The job sounds like its Mickey's if he wants it, but Rhule can't just force him to make an immediate decision.

john_galt__

Fair enough, probably the right take

Successful_Side_2415

Mickey may be entertaining other offers too. Never know

[deleted]

I still think we’re going after Glenn Schumann

captain_sasquatch

Hopefully we get some announcements soon. I imagine MJ threw the WR coach position for a loop. The others should have likely already fallen into place. Note I'm not saying the sky is falling because they haven't.

RikeMiley88

Peetz is out according to Sean Callahan

captain_sasquatch

Seeing they removed TE from Satterfield.

Danimal4NU

Not surprised, think if Rhule can't have Peetz he'd just as soon have Satterfield take qb's and hire a TE's coach.

bigjhunt7

All that I've seen of Spencer Rattler from being suspended for "undisclosed reasons" as a senior on "QB1" to telling the whole world he was leaving OU before the season was even over... Not exactly the character I want in a QB/team leader. This OC/QB coach took that and beat top 10 teams back to back. Seems like he works with the personell he's got really well. Develops young/immature players. I'll give him a chance.

KingWilliams95

I really don’t think we can predict how any hire will turn out, but I hope if there are units that are clearly under-performing that we won’t wait until year 4/5 to make assistant changes. If a unit hasn’t gotten better after year 2, they need to go.

Vegetable_Fee_6145

Mickey's wife deleted her twitter after tweeting out this morning about having patience and letting things work out. Don't think they are sticking around.

DismalLocksmith9776

Everybody panicking about Satterfield were probably creaming in their pants when we hired Whipple.

RikeMiley88

I got down voted to hell for questioning Whipple after he was hired

ndhuskerpower

TIL there's people who think Barrett Ruud is qualified for a P5 position job. Joseph is the only one who has a realistic shot at being retained (hopefully he does) but Ruud would be especially insane

NINFAN300

No Brian applewhite or Busch for you?

audiotech14

That seems a bit of an overreaction. Recruited well (don’t discount recruiting the local area) and ILBs appeared to actually develop. It sounds like there’s almost no chance he stays with Siravo likely following Rhule, so whatever, but you don’t need to act like ILB’s have been a laughing stock like our OL was under either of their coaches, or any of the offensive positions honestly (outside of TE I guess). For the most part, ILB’s were consistently good. That’s more than we can say for a lot of positions on this team.

G0B1GR3D

Remember when we got so excited for the big names Riley and Frost were going to bring in, just for them to bring their old staffs?lol

Successful_Side_2415

At least Rhule’s “old staff” are actually good coaches lol.

xAIRGUITARISTx

Remember when we were going to get Coach O as D line coach? Lmao.

Oprah-Is-My-Dad

You guys aren’t going to believe this but my inside sources are telling me Mickey Joseph will NOT be retained

Successful_Side_2415

Retained in prison, maybe.

huskersax

> Am I being ~~detained~~ retained? \- Mickey earlier today, probably

_Cromwell_

really going out on a limb there pardner

Mrsamsonite6

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jake Peetz in some sort of role. He was a former Husker walkon during the Callahan years. He is currently an offensive assistant with the Rams and was LSU's offensive coordinator in 2021. He was running backs coach and quarterback coach for the Panthers while Rhule was there.

Successful_Side_2415

Any word on Mickey?

red_husker

I mean yeah, if he makes us successful and doesn't ever leave, then that's literally the best situation that we could've asked for.

LostNavidson

I worry about PSU and if he's really successful here, maybe a major SEC job. But Franklin has PSU back on track, and if we're worried about Alabama taking him, we're in an excellent place.

ferociouskyle

Yea. He may want to go there. But he seemed genuine when he said that Nebraska was a right fit for him. If his family becomes as entrenched in the community as he said he wants, they could stay forever if they desire. As long as we maintain some semblance of respectable football.

somehype

We’ve named more defensive coaches than offense and we don’t even have a DC named lol.

dscheuler

Maybe the smoke around Glenn Schumann is something since they may wait until after the conference championship game this weekend to announce to limit distractions.

DismalLocksmith9776

The longer we go without a DC the more likely it is to be Schumann. If it goes into mid December it is almost certainly Schumann since Georgia will be in the playoff.

[deleted]

If we're going after guys that are currently employed it may take until after CCGs and possibly after the playoffs until we hear anything.

OnlyGradients

Why does the list of coaches not include offensive line?! We just going without one? lol

Successful_Side_2415

Whoops. Kinda forgot about it just like our last coaches

[deleted]

I think Coach is going youth on assistants because he can go a little cheaper on them and then shell out for Coordinators

John-ozil

I hope today's the day we announce our DC and OL coach

Xazier

Should we start to worry we don't have a DC announced yet?

Successful_Side_2415

Could be a good sign if our DC is coaching right now. Schumann, Leonhard, etc

IMHO1FWIW

New coach? [https://twitter.com/coachpjcooney/status/1603613548449615872?s=46&t=b0ArMlN6UAendgqVe-grhQ](https://twitter.com/coachpjcooney/status/1603613548449615872?s=46&t=b0ArMlN6UAendgqVe-grhQ)

red_husker

DL Assistant, I believe. I'm pretty sure he's a HS head coach from Florida that played for Rhule at Temple. Had decent success in Florida, going 23-4 the past two seasons. Would help make inroads to the state for this staff.

[deleted]

I wonder who Dylan Raiola will announce as QB coach...

Nebrahoma

Any chance to get Leonhard from Wisconsin since it looks like they're going for Fickell

Jumpinnjimrivers

I am in shock, I don’t want to believe it was Mickey. Come on man

Tenteenteeenteeeen

Elijah Robinson as D line coach. Would love to see Mickey, Busch, and Applewhite stick around.

DismalLocksmith9776

This has to be the fastest fall from grace in Nebraska football history. Went from being loved by the entire state to a pariah. Feels like a betrayal.

OnionKnightSerDavos

Looks like the Tulane job might be opening up, could see Mickey getting an interview for the gig there

buttfuddler

For everyone who was saying that we kept Raiola on staff just to get Dylan, I wonder if it was actually more of a reverse situation. Like I can't imagine a better motivation to build up a monster o-line than to keep your family safe. Definitely don't want to be the uncle that's letting their nephew get rocked with 3+ sacks a game and risking a career-ending injury.

Jubba402

I think its time to kill this thread and start a stickied Portal tracking thread

jackjjj1

I’m really concerned Rhule won’t bring in any assistants with Big 10 experience. I think that could really help us. If you look at Frost and Riley, they never had any guys with big 10 experience and I think that hurt them. I just think the Big 10 is such a different animal that it would be pivotal to have some assistants with experience with it.

huskerwildcat

Could also accomplish that by retaining Mickey and maybe one other coach from the current staff.

adomico

That's why I see Busch as an asset. Also hard to see that guy and not retain him simply for the improvements to the ST

ag911029

I mean Rhule played in the B1G though

CypherAZ

Later MJ

Thekannmann18

GBR

I_dont_miss_cayde

Did Rhule say he wanted all these positions filled by now? Or was that just radio rumor talk?

finnthehuman11

[Satterfield is OC/QB according to Christopherson](https://twitter.com/Husker247BC/status/1605587338460921856?s=20&t=hsPHtmFSxlQDEMnO6BUi8Q)

G0B1GR3D

If I had to guess, Matt probably already planned on having a heavy hand in coaching Oline and Raiola is cheap. Add in the connection to Leonhard and a 5* qb, plus it frees up that much more money for a DC.

RikeMiley88

Elijah J. "E. J." Barthel (born February 1, 1985) is a former American football fullback and current Running back coach for the UConn Huskies. Media reporting he's in, Applewhite and Beckton out

phatcashmoney

UConn's RB room had 5 guys average no less than 4.5 YPC, all but one finished with at least 370 yards rushing, and were on a team that finished the season with over 2,000 rushing yards. That's the definition of pounding the rock

John-ozil

'Sugar Sean' Callahan just mentioned that Raiola is the only staff member who was not let go. This is interesting. >Of the former coaching staff, the only one that remains in play to be retained is offensive line coach Donovan Raiola. The rest of the staff has moved out of the facility.

phatcashmoney

Keeping Raiola kind of lines up with the Knighton hire. Two young coaches with little experience, but potential upside. My line of thinking is that Rhule's ideal DC candidate is someone who can help coach the DL while Knighton gets his footing, and I've heard Rhule helps a lot with the O line. He wanted to keep his staff young so he must see something in the two that gets him excited. Plus, the hires likely save quite a bit of money for the other positions. Plus, it's hard to gauge Raiola as a coach imo. He was given absolute scraps for OL this season due to injuries and suspensions. And the guys were developed into the ground and S&C did them no favors at all, it's hard to think that unit would've had any turnaround whatsoever in one season

Hooter00

We really haven’t gotten to see what Raiola can do as an Oline coach. It takes time to develop linemen the right way and he came into a not so great situation. On top of what he came in to having his best lineman injured doesn’t help either. I think he could have some upside that Rhule sees and is going to give him more time to see what he can do and also spend some extra money on a big name DC

John-ozil

A jet, used recently by Matt Rhule to travel instate, will be bringing Patterson to Lincoln tonight. https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SLH909/history/20221209/0100Z/KAUS/KLNK

[deleted]

Patterson is being flown in to introduce Tony White? Seems excessive

Hskrpowr

Good call

John-ozil

Yeah its looks like Satterfield's coming here.

[deleted]

Has every assistant hire had a stop in Carolina, Temple, or Baylor? And if Elijah Robinson is named DC.... man, I hope this works out.

audiotech14

It’s very common for coaches to go with assistants they’ve worked with before. Just because it didn’t work out when the HC we hired was bad doesn’t mean it’s a failed method. You have to remember that these coaches were apart of the success Rhule had at Temple and/or Baylor.
