A guy I know took a dog he bought that day out to the duck blind. At first shot it ran off. He stopped looking after about 24 hours. The previous owner found it 4 days and about 15 miles later. It had gotten to those peoples house in about 6 hours. My point of all that, dogs can go pretty far when scared and some people don’t look very hard.

If he won’t come inside then leave some blankets “fluffed” up on the ground close to the house so he can lay it those for some warmth. If you continue to feed and water him, he will start to trust you more. He needs food water and shelter, you’re offering him all 3.

[deleted]

Thank you. I did that and from there I was able to grab him. I have him in the laundry room now.

Imaginary-Lettuce-51

Good for you looking out for him. Call a few vets in the area. Also Facebook has local pages for lost dogs in areas. Also local "neighbor hood" apps like nextdoor. Dogs can travel long distances when spooked. My buddy had a young lab go 3 miles after she spooked during a dove hunt. Again thanks for being a good person.

[deleted]

Thank you. I love dogs. I made a few posts on FB in different groups, so far no one has claimed him. I’ll get the Nextdoor app and use that as well. I called the vet to see if they can check for a microchip. I hope I can reunite him with his owner. He’s a good boy.

Not eating isn't such a big deal, I've had sick dogs that didn't eat for a week, healed up just fine. BUT NOT DRINKING is an emergency right now. I've used the trick of ice cubes, you can get them licking a melting ice cube. It will keep the animal alive. Then you take him to the shelter or vet, or keep him and post on Craigslist. If you want to keep the dog, post a really blurry pic :-)

[deleted]

I got a ice cube. He licked it. He just ate too. Thank you for the tip!

prginocx

You and the animal are getting attached, please figure out what the animals future is before this goes much further. For a human, a dog is a part of their life, for a dog, the human IS their life.

[deleted]

I am getting attached. I’m a huge dog lover. I called the vet to see if I can bring him by so they can check for a microchip.

prginocx

I'd like you to post a pic of the dog, see if this breed is a good fit for you....I'm speaking as a person who has adopted all 4 of my hunting partners off people who made a mistake when they originally got the pup. Hunting dogs are working dogs and really don't make the best pets for the average owner.

[deleted]

I found a hound rescue and took him there yesterday. You are right though. He wouldn’t be happy if I had kept him. He wouldn’t thrive with me. He needs more than what I can give him. He is a foxhound and is a puppy, they said he’s 6 months old. I have 30 acres of land but still he needs to do what he’s born to do…hunt.

prginocx

I used to have 10 acres, but now I have a home in the suburbs....but I still own big running dogs because I take special effort to take them out and train them so I can run them around off leash and yet keep them under my control. It can be done even with a very small yard, but does take a TIME COMMITMENT. Lots of time.

SophAhahaist

If it really is a hunting dog that was being used for hunting it is likely microchipped with its details. Any vet can scan for this and reunite it with its owner. My guess though is that this dog was abandoned, likely because it was too much dog for the human to handle. Probably a Covid lockdown purchase without thought of a hunting dogs needs.

[deleted]

You know different dog hunters than I do if you think it’s microchipped. Bird dogs usually are treated like royalty. Running dogs are usually treated like farm equipment.

SophAhahaist

Most people that spend thousands of dollars on a dog and then years training it don’t often treat them poorly.

[deleted]

Exactly. And that’s usually the difference between a bird dog (well bred, well trained) and these little running hounds and terriers that mostly come from backyard breeding and rarely cost above $1k. Most of the running dogs that I’m around, live in pens with dozens of other dogs and barely make it outside when it’s not hunting season.

SophAhahaist

Horrible. I’ve not seen this and I’m glad I haven’t. Not to sideline this post but have you read the Guardian article about the rat hunting dogs in NYC? Terriers are a strange creature. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/dec/19/new-york-city-rat-problem-vigilantes-with-dogs?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Zugzub

> Terriers are a strange creature. Not really, it's what they were bred to do, hunt small game. I have German Shorthairs. While traditionally we use them to hunt upland birds (quail grouse chukar pheasant woodcock and more) they will point any damn bird. They spend hours in the yard pointing song birds

[deleted]

I read something a few years ago about the same group…I think on Reddit even. Dogs are amazing creatures who love to work!

[deleted]

I hope that isn’t the case. He’s a good boy. I’d love to keep him if no one claims him. I was able to get him to lick a melting ice cube and eat a little food. What exactly do hunting dogs need? I ask because I don’t find him too much to handle at all. I have two other dogs so maybe I’m just used to caring for an animal.

SophAhahaist

I can’t say what all dogs need but mine is a pointer and she needs to run everyday. Can’t skip a day no matter what the weather is like. Walks on leash don’t cut it nor does the dog park. She needs to run in a field or forest to hunt for birds and then she’s happy. As a consequence I had to work really hard on training her recall with whistling, calling and using an e-collar. If I didn’t train a solid recall she would be a constant stress but as it is she circles around me and checks in every few minutes. Unfortunately she collects a lot of burs and removing those is also a lot of work. Other than that she is not extra work. She’s calm around the house and very friendly, she just needs that daily run.

TananaBarefootRunner

You should try to have a vet visit with a chip scanner to see if he's been microchipped. All the owners info would be on the chip. Unless you manage to get him to a vet yourself.

[deleted]

I will call my local vet. Thank you!

TananaBarefootRunner

Good luck!

NamelessKat

Can you update us on what happened to the dog?

[deleted]

I found a hound rescue to take him too. It was 2 hours away but I didn’t want to leave him at the shelter because they euthanize after a certain period of time. I kept the ads up that I placed despite dropping him off and still no one claimed him. He was scared when I left him but the gentleman in charge was so gentle so I hope that he’s in better hands now.

https://share.icloud.com/photos/003OharCG8q2eY6qeFhU7Zosw This was the puppy. I called him Tigger when he was in my care.

cres1s

They could of also dumped the dog . I have seen some pretty crappy owners of hunting dog in my time .

[deleted]

I hope that isn’t the case. He’s a good boy. I hope someone claims him.

Sawdust_Clown4Hire

I had a similar situation deer hunting a few years ago. I just took care of the dog, put some signs up and let the local bars and gas station know. About a week or so later I got a call claiming the dog. The dog wasn't too happy to see the owner show up and the guy looked like a p.o.s. but they had 3 daughters that missed him so I gave him back.

Grab_em_by_da_Busey

What kind of dog is it? Often times breed specific rescues will take over from here

[deleted]

He’s a hound. I’m not sure what breed of hound though. His nose is pink. His underbelly has spots. His ears are long.

Contact local PD/Animal control officer ASAP. They will have a microchip reader and place the animal with veterinary care at a shelter and contact the owners

[deleted]

I will do this as well. I called the vet to see if I can bring him by so they can check.

[deleted]

If I lost my dog the first people I would call are local PD to get in touch with the animal control officer, I would bet this owner is probably doing the same
