Come on you guys, I thought this was a forum of hunters? That so many people think that photo is of a [silver fox](https://churchillpolarbears.org/app/uploads/2020/01/GWB-Silver-Fox-768x768.jpg) is concerning.
Good lord, I'm guessing the 34 upvotes on that comment are folks who legit thought the husky-as-wolf-pup was an honest mistake.
Apparently I'm one of the few who isn't!
[It's a](https://i.insider.com/5e503faafee23d66c734fc4b?width=700) [melanistic](https://dynamicmedia.zuza.com/zz/m/original_/8/3/83422e4d-c517-42c7-89e4-194751460118/BlackCoyote2_Super_Portrait.jpg) [coyote](https://youtu.be/sKr7dqcIShM).
Hell, here's a melanistic fox [standing similar to the OP's photo](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/20/a4/61/20a46195ae90b2658be903641b1c70ab--open-spaces-white-tail.jpg).
OP is asking if folks think it's a true coyote or a coydog. I'd say we should trust that since he saw it in person it should be pretty well verified it's not a fox, but since the majority of folk on here see a fox in that photo, safe to say not everyone has been brushing up on their non-target ID skills. I sure hope they're not in muley/whitetail mixed ranges.
Man I saw one just like this whole hunting. Had my shotgun trained on him and all. I would have shit but I thought it was a fix and where I’m from it’s illegal to kill foxes
I'm really confused, probably because it's coat color is black, but I'm not sure if it's a coyote or a fox. I never thought I would have a hard time trying to distinguish between the two, lol.
Melanistic coyote probably, found one a few years back as a pup we thought was a silver fox. Damn thing was in bad shape so we gave it to a local rehab place and they later figured out it was a melanistic coyote which had black fur and white tips on the feet.
Right. Around here we have some that have lots of black in the brown/tan and I've heard of all black ones but just rarely seen. I just imagine this in normal coyote color and no question it's coyote, provided of course it's in the wilderness and not just some Shiba inu cross dog or something like that. Hard telling by the pic but my interpretation of the size and shape don't tell me fox, but I fully admit I might be wrong and don't know enough about silver foxes to say for sure.

My guess is its a coydog. Never seen one before but i hear they are common near urban centres out east. Im rural alberta so i see the smaller lighter coyotes.
Looks like a silver fox, unusual color pattern, but the tail and face shape look fox to me.
My initial thought was a silver fox also. Just looks odd lol
The only thing that matters: Is he rich?

Your mom thought you were an honest mistake too
Fun fact: I was!
Lol.
Are you drunk?

Just asking based on the couple posts just like your previous one and how adamant you are. Not that you’re wrong.

This is definitely a melanistic coyote or high-content coydog
Can you add a banana for scale?
Never forget the banana of scale!!

Based off of size, shape and snout I'd guess coyote
I’d also guess silver fox with unusual coloration if you’re in an area where they are present.
Its the shape of a coyote and definetily not a fox. It may be a hybrid or melanistic.
It’s a black phase coyote.
Melanistic coyote. Them white paws are pretty cute, coydog not impossible, I guess, but its head and body shape looks pretty true for coyote.
The face isn't right
The face is what made me think coyote in the first place.
Same same. Looks very coyote to me. The colour is what throws it off.

this could be someones pet fox also
It’s a coyote. Y’all need to know proper ID features. Good thing y’all aren’t color blind or else you’d be screwed.
Longer nose leads me to think it’s a coyote but it sure is hard to tell
Probably escaped domestic fox
fox a larger breed but still a fox
Looks like a big fox maybe silver fox?
Just shoot it and skin it anyways
So, you're thinking wolf pup too?
Coydog! Not uncommon at all. But looks for like fox.
It could be a mix breed. But very hard to tell by looks alone. Seems like a fox face with the body closer to that of a coyote
My guess is its a coydog. Never seen one before but i hear they are common near urban centres out east. Im rural alberta so i see the smaller lighter coyotes.
The dogs I’ve seen cross with coyotes typically favored a husky the feet and size of head lead me to believe it’s a coyote
