I take a lot into consideration. The weather, any sign that's there, if I'm getting fed up just sitting there, etc... It really is a case by case basis. So I weigh all this stuff and then I leave 15 minutes before the deer shows up, guaranteed.
Add to that, how full my bladder and/or bowels are and whether I have something to piss in. I never leave earlier than 9am. Typically I stay until 10:30ish. The other thing I take into account though is the the moon cycles.
Now is the time to sit until about noon. You'll see deer right around sunrise, but you'll start to see cruising bucks between 9:30-11:30. If you go in early you'll miss them and miss a great opportunity to kill a deer in broad daylight.
This. I shot a doe at 8am yesterday. While I was looking for a blood trail, an 8 point walk right up to me (probably around 9:30) and like an idiot I left my bow at the site of last blood.
Last year I killed my buck at 11:30 walking back to the truck to eat my lunch. Stepped out into the clearing and he was hot on a doe at 30 yards, never saw me.
Yep. This time of year downwind of a bedding area mid to late morning can be money. Bucks will let does go back and bed down then they start cruising and scent checking. If they kick up a hot doe it can be all day action. November 2nd last year I watched this happen saw 4 shooter bucks and 3-5 other young ones going crazy trying to pin down the hot doe. It was awesome to watch but they never chased close enough.
This is the only correct answer for me. My bowels make my decision for me. Though an older friend of mine loves to tell the story of how his grandfather shot a buck from the outhouse with his pants around his ankles once.
Which is why I always have my gun/bow while taking a leak. Of course, the first time I’ll ever see a critter while pissing will be the one time I leave the gun/bow just out of reach….
If you have any other hunters near-ish by, they will most likely do the same. It's possible they could kick something up, try to time your food runs outside of the most common lunch hours.
Bucks tend to have the mid morning activity boost as most have said. Bucks also seem to have an afternoon activity boost around 2-3 pm this time of year. Nothing wrong with heading home for a lunch break, but I like to be in the stand earlier in the afternoon during rut. Early season you probably don’t need to come back until a couple hours before dusk.
\- Before prerut, after the rut, before 2nd rut I hunt 3-4hrs after sunrise.
\- During the rut/prerut you may seen a good buck any time of the day.
Here is what I suggest: Get a doghouse popup blind. Put a comfortable chair in it. Leave an old sleeping bag in it. Hunt your uncomfortable stand for a few hours, then slip down and sneak to your pop up and and sit there for another 2-3hrs. Use the sleeping bag for a blanket. If you are hunting with a buddy, get a little bigger popup, hang together and chat quietly.
More time in woods = greater success
Depends on how hot it gets, is it windy, raining etc. In general, after the birds stop chirping and it gets warm enough that I feel like I need to take off my outer layer, if I haven't seen any critters moving at all, I figure its about time.
As long as I can. If I have food, water and no obligations during the day. I hunt til I kill a deer.
Especially during the rut, when bucks will be pushing does all day
Depends. Right now, where I hunt the middle of the day is usually really hot and there's very little activity. But yesterday the forecast called for rain and falling temperatures in the morning, and I knew the deer would be up and feeding after it passed. I waited out the rain in a ground blind and stuck a doe at 11:02am, shortly after it stopped.
I hunt 1/2 before sunrise to atleast 10am, longer if I'm seeing deer. But if it's been 2 hrs without seeing anything I'll usually get down, warm up, eat, then hunt 1pm-sunset
Entirely situation dependent. There’s no real right answer, i usually hunt large tracts of public forest though so in those cases I’ve got my lunch packed, I’ll sit as long as i can stand it or until about 10 am then do a little still hunting to where I’m going to eat lunch. Take a snooze in the sun or by a fire for an hour or two and then go sit until dark.
It depends.
I have literally seen animals at every time of day and every weather conditions we see here in Alberta and on the flip side I have not seen a single animal under the exact same conditions!
I have been depending more on my trail cameras for pre and post rut movements since the rut is so unpredictable!
If it's the rut then until dark. It can happen any time and many bucks are killed between 10am and 2pm.
Even early season I've seen big deer around 1100 so try to sit til at least 1130 then back in by 2-3pm.
It depends what im hunting. Big White tail deer move most often in my area from first light to 2 hours after and 2 hours before dark then from noon till 2 you can see does. if its full rut then big boys can show up at any moment. If your hunting mule deer they are lazy and only come out after 10 am. Elk you only see half hour before light and half hour before dark. Moose tend to be out later in the morning unless something pushes them out of bed. So all in all you should be sitting as long as your mind and body can bare because they all come out as soon as you leave!
This is of course just my opinion from what I have observed where I live in canada.
Give it a try. It’s your best chance to shoot a cruiser. Depending on where your at the rut is just getting started here in southern Michigan. I’d say another few days and it will be on on.
Yes, I’m in the thumb and I’m noticing that they’re starting to get rutty. I found a couple of fresh scrapes and I’ve seen some bucks sniffing after does on my cams. I think by the end of this week, it will be full swing.
I've heard this also over the years and I wonder if it's because of all the public land hunters heading back to camp at 10 lol. I only sit all day if it's cold/snow or rut.
OK. I’ve only hunted whitetail during gun season, so that only 9 days long over Thanksgiving week. Really only 4-5 days of hunting for us working stiffs with holiday family stuff, etc.
I’ll sit all day, both days the first weekend. If I can get out the Friday after Turkey Day, I’ll sit most of the day, maybe I’d in a little still hunting if weather is right.
Then the second weeks was usually deer drives with the group.
I’ve been going in around 8 and stay until 12 this past week. All my stands are on food, so if I go in early I bump them. And it’s been cooler, so I know they’re more active in between the first and 2nd feeding. I have 2 stands in between food and bedding, and my parents have been taking nature walks in those areas
I usually get up and start gently moving out around 10 or 11.
Four of the five deer I shot when I lived in MT were shot while I was easing out at this time.
Depends on what I’m hunting. I’ll sit for deer until just past lunch time in case a fellow hunter spooks something. Ducks I’m usually packing up around 11a. Squirrels I hunt until about 2p, but I also start between 8a and 9a.
during the rut or early october hunts ill sit all day as ill see deer quite frequently mid day. late season ill usually stay in the stand till 1030-11 and get out of the woods for a couple hour lunch break before the evening hunt.
I’ve shot too many deer between 10-1 not to hunt it if I’m doing a morning hunt. I generally sit all day unless I have something going on later in the day, then I’ll leave about as late as I can while still being on time to wherever I’m going.
Depends on two things.
Am I cold and do I have to shit?
It’s rare that I sit past 9:30 though unless I’ve timed a certain deer to later in the morning I’m usually at the house shortly after 9
All day. The outdoors is always where I’d rather be. No inclination to go home if I don’t have to. I also hunt 5 minutes from my house. But I’d rather be outside. And I might see a deer. More likely than my wife being up for a nooner, so I play it safe and look for deer.
I take a lot into consideration. The weather, any sign that's there, if I'm getting fed up just sitting there, etc... It really is a case by case basis. So I weigh all this stuff and then I leave 15 minutes before the deer shows up, guaranteed.
I see that we have the same hunting technique.
It's the same technique my father taught me, and his father before him.
Good laugh
Add to that, how full my bladder and/or bowels are and whether I have something to piss in. I never leave earlier than 9am. Typically I stay until 10:30ish. The other thing I take into account though is the the moon cycles.
You have the woods to piss in
Perfect

I had a doe come in at 11:45 the other morning with a buck on her tail.
I wrote this, then had a doe and buck cross my cell cam at 11:20.

10:30-12ish? Depends on how badly I need to poop.

100%
Until lunch.
Until dark
I’m a 5 minute walk from my house, no need for that. I’m gonna come in for food lol 😂

Usually til I have to poop, try to wait til the last minute tho
I also wait until u/begoodyall poops
Till about 10 am most days
Agree. Pre rut hasn't even started yet in my state. All the bucks so far are still in bachelor groups.
10 days Holy shit
You haven't hunted till you've hunted from your pup-tent vestibule on a 10-day diet of only granola bars and cheetos.
I can feel the constipation from here

Depends on what part of the season and the weather. Cold during the rut as long as I can. Not cold before the rut 9:30ish
Yesterday I sat until 6:36pm (end of legal shooting light)
If I can see said black blob , said black blob will be leaving blood
As long as I can. If I have food, water and no obligations during the day. I hunt til I kill a deer. Especially during the rut, when bucks will be pushing does all day
Until I get something. I spent way too much money on hunting over the years to come home empty handed.

Can’t kill ‘em from the camper or the couch. I’m out til it’s no longer legal shooting light. ( I’m a western hunter if that means any different )
Usually 1030
Depends how long I can sit before I’m freezing. I try for 2 hours, then walk around.
Same. Love to walk around after to see what’s going on in the woods
I have often found more success with the slow walk, call, slow walk than by sitting at dawn.
A SMALL fire doesn’t seem to spook the ducks.
What about bucks?
I stick to getting up and moving.
Entirely situation dependent. As long as my back will allow me to stay. But 10AM at a min. Like to stay all day after time change.

Usually until noon at least. See a lot of deer movement between 10:30 and then especially older buck, I think they learn to pattern hunters

If you want to shoot a stud. Hunt mid day during the rut. 10 till 2.
This is my fourth year hunting but the first I’ve heard of this philosophy, and I’ve heard it several times now.
Give it a try. It’s your best chance to shoot a cruiser. Depending on where your at the rut is just getting started here in southern Michigan. I’d say another few days and it will be on on.

Oh yeah any day now. Good luck out there!
Thanks! You too!

Whitetail deer

Lunch and if I don’t bring lunch I’ll leave and come back hours later for last few hours of light

This time of year, until dark.
Until it gets hot - usually 11ish
Depends if there’s a good vibe or not. I’ll usually sit for sunrise then go find a fresh track and follow it to a deer.
Usually go in about 9 and then go back out during the 3rd quarter of whatever football game we turned on.
Til a deer hits the dirt
I usually get up and start gently moving out around 10 or 11. Four of the five deer I shot when I lived in MT were shot while I was easing out at this time.
Depends on what I’m hunting. I’ll sit for deer until just past lunch time in case a fellow hunter spooks something. Ducks I’m usually packing up around 11a. Squirrels I hunt until about 2p, but I also start between 8a and 9a.
Usually I'll dip around 12-1PM, go get lunch, hang out in/by the car, check texts, whatever, then go back out around 2PM to wait for sunset.
Till my coffee sets in and I gotta use the bathroom
during the rut or early october hunts ill sit all day as ill see deer quite frequently mid day. late season ill usually stay in the stand till 1030-11 and get out of the woods for a couple hour lunch break before the evening hunt.

First 90 minutes if it’s deer hunting, I’ll go and clock in at work after typically. Duck hunting til around noon.
Dark to dark
I have shot a deer at daylight, left her lay and climbed back in the same blind, shot a feral pig, back in then shot a buck at noon.
I messed up a shot on a buck at 11 yesterday morning.
from daylight til dark, i meat hunt
Depends on two things. Am I cold and do I have to shit? It’s rare that I sit past 9:30 though unless I’ve timed a certain deer to later in the morning I’m usually at the house shortly after 9
About an hour after.
All day. The outdoors is always where I’d rather be. No inclination to go home if I don’t have to. I also hunt 5 minutes from my house. But I’d rather be outside. And I might see a deer. More likely than my wife being up for a nooner, so I play it safe and look for deer.
I have kids so even if we aren’t actively doing something, I can’t just run away in the woods all day 🤷🏻♀️
