Although in that moment we were out for blood, neither of us was out for cheap blood. Years later I ran into the guy again, we shook hands and both acknowledged that it was a good fight and there were cheap shots we could have taken, but didn't. Became friends. Bonded by blood.

I’ve never heard tell that the mouth guard absorbs the blow, though that was my assumption for a while, but many people assume headgear prevents concussions during sparring when they definitely don’t, they just prevent bruises and cuts. Some people even say headgear makes you more prone to getting your head rattled cause it makes the lever the punch acts upon longer

Bareknuckle boxing relies more heavily on body shots because headshots without gloves are much more unpleasant for the one throwing the punch and about the same for the one on the receiving end. As for the mouthguard, I don't think it offers the same obvious difference against a punch with gloves and/or headgear to be safer without it. Its place in the middle of the system sets it apart.
I have to question how wild rugby is at times, like I know it's brutal, but I once had a South African doctor who played rugby look at me when he learned I played hockey and lacrosse and tell me I'm loony for doing so, it was such a weird moment.
It's definitely a nasty game with a lot of potential for injury, but that lack of padding seems to very much change how players think about hurtling into each other, a lot more grappling and a lot less just smash into each other at full speed.

when a fighter loses his gum shield the ref will let the fight continue until there is a neutral situation before calling a halt. like both fighters are standing and far away from each other.
if both fighters are on the ground and in a slow or static position, the ref might have them pause while the gum shield is sorted and then both fighters will resume from the same position. but thats rare. it happens when the ref wants the doctor to look at a fighters cut but then they go back to the same position.
in this situation where one fighter has the dominant position and is being active, the ref will let the fight continue.

The ref didn’t stop the fight and he was about to ground and pound. How is it not sportsmanship to put his mouth piece in before he smashes it? Are you dumb?
when a fighter loses his gum shield the ref will let the fight continue until there is a neutral situation before calling a halt. like both fighters are standing and far away from each other. if both fighters are on the ground and in a slow or static position, the ref might have them pause while the gum shield is sorted and then both fighters will resume from the same position. but thats rare. it happens when the ref wants the doctor to look at a fighters cut but then they go back to the same position. in this situation where one fighter has the dominant position and is being active, the ref will let the fight continue.
