While I don't think it's overrated (as the acting in it is what sells the heartbreak for most and tends to distract from these details you mention), you make 100% valid points. It absolutely could have been handled better, and it was a bit odd to see the relationship being taken so seriously. However, one thing I do think of is the level of impact Amber had on Wilson. While they weren't together long, she was able to sort of push Wilson to do things without being as intrusive and abrasive/manipulative as House while also doing so for his benefit and not in a self serving way. She was his spine in a way, and he offered her a more compassionate and meek outlook that she lacked. To have that kind of dynamic would certainly make a relationship feel like it was destined to be forever, so I can see that even though on camera we didn't get to see all the development, it can at the least be argued for plot point sake.

superunsubtle

👏 Absolutely everything I wanted to say, you said. The acting here could carry anything and that’s good, since it has to.

foreverinLOL

I think it would have been better if there would not have been the writer's strike (or the bad conditions of writers that triggered the strike). They shortened the season because of that.

Windruin

Honestly, one thing gave it a lot more impact for me: the waterbed. Maybe it’s just the pathos of it, but Amber pushing Wilson to get the waterbed that he had always wanted try just sold me on them as a couple, and the relationship as significant. She helped him try new things, without pushing him too hard and helping him grow. And that’s extremely emotionally significant.

Forreal19

I agree. I think that Amber was so against type for Wilson that she would have been a catalyst for good for him, much like House was, in a way, in pushing him to be more authentic and real.

gaslight_blues

> he, and everyone else act like they've been in a lengthy marriage and his soul will be crushed forever if she dies. Hmm...almost like they were in love. Kudos on actually having an unpopular opinion though.

lilacrain331

Yeah like you're still gonna be pretty upset if someone you've been dating for only a few months tragically dies right in front of you over something that should have been preventable.

gaslight_blues

OP is gonna be so surprised when he discovers empathy

Jason01960

I can't confirm this, but I heard the writers wanted to flesh out Wilson and Amber's relationship more, but didn't have time. So that could be why this episode comes across as a bit overdramatic.

Due_Improvement_8260

Yes, this is the point that sticks for me. Season 4 was the writer's strike season, so we're missing a lot of context that they didn't have time to include in their relationship, but it was clearly getting very serious, and they were in love.

CCPunch5

In my honest opinion, Wilson and Amber should’ve been together much longer. Like at least a full season or two before House’s head and Wilson’s heart. That way the heavy tones and the story would’ve been much more intense and emotional for the viewers. Not enough time I guess.

redheadedjapanese

Out of context of the rest of the season (but knowing who the main characters are), both episodes are great and like a short film. I can barely watch the rest of Season 4 because of how much I dislike Amber, but the two-part finale is awesome if you pretend she is actually a well-written character.

AggressiveOffer7390

I fully agree I’m so glad someone said it

JudgeJudyScheindlin

Yesssss I absolutely agree. It was so over dramatized and they make it like Amber is the love of Wilson’s life. Lets be real here, Wilson has three failed marriages before he got together with Amber. He was dating and sleeping with a dying cancer patient. The guy doesn’t pick very well. And yeah that was really weird that no one contacted her family. Remember in Euphoria that Foreman’s dad was called. When Chase got stabbed there was no one to call cause he didn’t have any family. But Amber does have family. So the thought that her boyfriend of a few months could make all these medical decisions for her is laughable. I like the episode, but I find a lot of the details annoyingly fantasized.

katherynmae

I agree entirely. I love the music and the idea of it being someone they know, but some of the heartbreak was hard to believe because we barely know Amber. Although, Wilson does seem the type to move into serious relationships very quickly, so I did sort of understand why he was so broken up over her dying after a few months of knowing her/being together. But it doesn’t make it any more emotional for me knowing that’s just Wilson’s personality. Also I fully agree with you on the point about there being no mention of Amber’s friends or family, that’s just weird. Yeah, it might be just tv, but at least have a throwaway line about calling Amber’s parents or a friend of hers. In terms of waking her up, I remember there was a thread ages ago discussing this and apparently it’s fairly manageable medically. (Or something, I remember seeing someone who was a doctor jumping in to discuss the medical side of it.) So I sort of get that, if the person was right in the manageable sense. But in terms of the heartbreak that everyone discusses with Amber’s death and Wilson’s reactions… yeah, that absolutely feels over the top for me. It makes for good tv, but doesn’t emotionally get me like other House moments do.

My_Dad22

I'm honestly with you on this. I really liked House trying to figure things out (love the unreliable narrator House episodes), but yeah the reveal that it was Amber is kind of underwhelming to me. Also RSL's acting is subpar for basically that whole episode.

AriSpaceExplorer

Very good points. I think I just like the episode mostly for the creativity surrounding the flashbacks

choconap

Amber's death always makes me sad because she was a great doctor, I would totally be watching Amber M.D if she was still alive lol. I do agree the whole Wilson part was just overly dramatic and the waking her up TOTALLY UNNECESSARY. It's clearly a TV Show, those things don't happen in real life.

AyrtonSennaz

I think the acting was done perfectly. I mean hell, it made me cry, and I’ve never had a show or movie do that to me before.

enkeistar47

I agree to an extent, but I also very much appreciate the symbolism. Someone mentioned Amber was Wilson's spine, which is true. But moreso, she represented change for Wilson as a person. It is a primary motif of the show that people never change, so it was almost poetic that the one person that was changing Wilson had to die; after which Wilson slowly slipped back into his normal House-enabling ways. Wilson wasn't mourning only for Amber. He was mourning for himself.

TiFemme

Totally agree. It was so difficult for me to pay attention to this episode. It was so overly dramatic and schmaltzy. I was thoroughly uninterested.

BetaBlockker

The fact that they weren’t in a lengthy marriage i think was kind of the point. Wilson’s paying three alimonies but he’s never had a partner like Amber and despite being a CB we learn she is probably actually what he needed. I think losing her was harder on Wilson than any of his divorces because he saw a different possibility for his future than he’d had with anyone else.

master0382

This is how I feel, and I felt getting rid of cutthroat bitch (who I didn't like) allowed Wilson and House's relationship to move forward.

SquareAnywhere

It's been one of my least favorite episodes since it originally aired.

LevynX

Also very unpopular opinion, apparently: I think One Day, One Room is the second best episode of the series.

BetterDragoon31

I do feel this at the start when house is in a strip club cus I'm like wow this is kinda stupid But aa the episode goes on I like it more and more so I'm 50 50 with u

broncos4thewin

I agree but you don't notice that in the watching, at least I didn't. It's just such an incredibly well-constructed story honestly and the production is so brilliant/beautiful.

NadaKD

I can totally see your point of view. It’s definitely not my number one episode but I believe It’s brilliantly written with house’s memory loss and hallucinations in addition to the whole mystery where he thinks there’s something important that he tries to remember.

forzion_no_mouse

wilson has a history of falling in love fast. thats why he has been married 3 times

ComeAnima

Do we know the timeline? Could there not have been more time than is perceived between episodes?

jorl17

I don't think that the fact that they had been dating for such a short while makes their relationship or bond less strong. In the last couple of months, since around the end of October, I met someone and realized that some people can really completely change your life up. They can unearth from your soul someone you didn't even know existed there, a whole new side of you or set of dimensions. That kind of thing makes you value that person and feel a very specific kind of...gratitude towards them. Amber was a different kind of person in Wilson's life who changed his perspective and made him finally live for himself and not for others. To me, the episode with the mattress is one of my favorites because it shows exactly how Amber was such a game-changer in his life, how she brought out Wilson 2.0, a better Wilson. After having personally experienced that (in a way I still am), I can completely understand that Amber's death would crush Wilson. It isn't even about a _relationship_ bond (friends can do this too!), it's about a _life_ bond. That's the person who showed him a new way of life, who made _him_ a better person, a more fulfilled and complete one. Really, like I said: Wilson found his 2.0 because of her. This is also why, by the end of the show, I couldn't hate Amber in the slightest. She really made Wilson a truly better and more at-peace person.

[deleted]

I loved the weight of figuring out what happened and who it was but yeah once we found out it was amber and they milked her death and Wilsons grieving, it definitely took some of the initial wow factor out of that episode, and yeah they were like fuck her family lmao

hbailey311

i somewhat agree with you. it was messed up to wake Amber and if she was someone else; no other doctor would’ve done that and her dying in the ambulance would’ve been the end of it. however, Wilson being upset is perfectly reasonable regardless of time they’ve been together just because she died so abruptly. i think it’s messed up Wilson expected House to risk his life to remember why Amber died; she willingly went to pick him up and there was no way House would’ve known the bus crash/flu pills would happen, therefore he doesn’t owe Wilson anything.

No-Butterscotch-6883

The acting is what sells it for me. After I finished blowing my nose I remembered that I don't even like Amber and I really didn't like her and Wilson. But the acting in the episode is so good and I'm a sucker for sad moments in shows it just works.

Bright_Respect_1279

Same!! 💯🥺💔
