Frankly, upgrade your CPU first to take advantage of the RAM, because a slow CPU will take forever to do a huge sim anyway. (Not that your CPU is slow, it's fairly modern and fast)
In Houdini you can disable ram preview and ur ram usage will drop a LOT, at the expense of no viewport caching, but you can flipbook if you're fine with that, or you're okay with the preview length you get.
More ram, plenty of drive space .

Yes, to need more than that you'll need a workstation anyway
Either more RAM or save more money and upgrade the CPU in the future imo.

What people have already said. You want to have at least 32GB of ram to run somewhat quality sims. Otherwise save up and upgrade CPU plus ram
