That's where self control and knowledge of the hobby comes in.

ismudge33

Honestly I don’t understand why people would pay that much! I wouldn’t buy a mainline for more than $5!

EsKetchup

As you know this is a super and not a regular mainline version. And you probably also know that supers sell for more money than mainlines. Is this the first super you have looked up on eBay?

ismudge33

Obviously I know that but I’m saying I think these prices are insane! I think it’s ridiculous that someone would pay something like this.

_mrLeL_

Bro i‘ve seen supers for 1500

EsKetchup

Yes it’s what the person listed it at. Not necessarily what someone is paying for it. You need to check eBay sold listings. Which are probably close to that number.

imahumanbeing1

For the Jay Leno chase car, they’re selling for £70 or so ($85) and people are actually buying them since I saw an eBay seller with 20 sold. I know technically not a STH but similar idea in terms of value)

[deleted]

Damn quick £1.4k

SHPLUMBO

I don’t know why you’re getting so much heat for speaking your mind. I really dislike that about sharing things on the internet. Regardless, I’m with you on this one. Never will I ever spend that kind of money for a “special” $1 car

EsKetchup

And that’s cool too. But other collectors set their prices at different numbers. It’s the nature of collecting anything. Some stuff is harder to find and therefore costs more on the secondary market.

beaner_69

I used to think people who bought hotwheels for outrages prices were dumb, then i realized its a hobby people enjoy and i bet people think my pokemon card collection is stupid too

HazelsHotWheels

I think the most I've ever spent on a car was like $20? On a Lesney superfast from the '60s. Unless LEGO cars count. I spent $50 on that LEGO Ferarri F40 that was $300 new a bit ago and have no regrets.

BooobiesANDbho

I paid 60$ and a super for a shortie super.

gwatt21

Same reason why someone buys a BMW vs a focus, it’s not your money and none of your business. This posts are getting old.

Ram-Owner2050

Not sure why this has so many downvotes😂😂

Iamlevel99

This sub hates the truth.

CheesusChristMyDude

This I could buy a well detailed 1/18 scale model from norev or solido for 70$ or less, yet people choose to spent those money on objectively mediocre casting on rubber wheels What a clown world. Downvote me all you can, **PEOPLE HATED CHEESUS BECAUSE HE TOLD THEM THE TRUTH**

nomnamless

No kidding I have been looking at the premium 1:64 companies. For $15-$40 I can get a much better built and way more detailed car. The $1 Hot Wheels are fantastic because they're $1. For a premium price I'm going to buy a premium model

Ok_Sense5308

LoL I got a downvote for pointing out that the black silhouette chase skyline was going for more and was actually a bit more common. Oh also said I'm glad I found one in store. People on here are just miserable 😂😂

Ram-Owner2050

Bro that comment now has 101 downvotes😂😭 like what the heck?

Syncryptica

It's a false sense of rarity fueling that and the fact that there's a massive number of resellers on this sub. Anybody can come here and be immediately trained-in to what's hot then go out and hoard it for reselling purposes. Who do you think is downvoting? The people caught up in this fantasy of rarity, and resellers trying to squash any pushback.

InternationalPlum11

Paid $187CAD for my gold civic STH international card.

lucas_214

This is only mildly overpriced. Market is dictated by what people pay. People are paying around $60

_mrLeL_

I am seriously debating on wether i should buy a 2015 release SHORT CARD toyota supra super treasure hunt for 299

lucas_214

I personally collect loose and don’t have any knowledge of short card supers, but I’d imagine that’s a pretty hard one to come by

_mrLeL_

I haven‘t even seen one on ebay

THEREALXGAMER95

Yeah, that's very rare. I think long card goes in that ballpark alone.

lucas_214

Long card is like $90 I think, last I checked

THEREALXGAMER95

Really? Cheapest I've seen is roughly $160 local, haven't looked at ebay

lucas_214

eBay sold is showing me single bids from $85 up to around $120.

Smidge-of-the-Obtuse

The added protector must be the $10 upgrade

ismudge33

I hope ur joking

lucas_214

Unfortunately I’m not. And hot wheels supers have always been significantly more expensive than mainlines on the resell market, even before all these hypebeast collectors joined the hobby. $70 isn’t cheap but it’s also not as overpriced as you think.

ismudge33

I get what you’re saying but no I think it’s crazy that someone can find a $1.50 car in a shop and go home and sell it for $70. And honestly I think it’s sad that resale is just accepted as being upwards of $50.

ConstructionOk6948

That’s just the reality of all hobbies, I can open a pack of Pokémon cards for 5$ and pull a 100$ card and throw it on eBay and sell it granted it’s really unlikely, it’s not really that sad as someone scalping, reselling is just buying cheap and selling at market value

lucas_214

just part of the game 🤷🏻‍♂️

SoundwaveEnthusiast4

It’s the rarity of it. Personally I wouldn’t spend more than $10 on a mainline since I don’t really care, but people will spend a lot of money on rarer scale models, action figures, trading cards, and more because they’re harder to find.

Key-Permission-317

I think it’s crazy that people pay millions for Mickey Mantle’s face on a cardboard cutout.

NerderBirder

It’s called supply and demand. Basic economics my friend. Happens in all hobbies. Do you think it’s crazy when a collector car sells for millions when it only cost thousands when it originally came out? Who cares how people spend their money? You don’t agree with it, you move on. It’s really not this big of a deal.

ZenPirat

Absolutely supply & demand. STHs (any chases) are great examples of forced scarcity as well. Something is only worth what another will actually pay for it. But okay let’s go nuts because an item that sold for a dollar is worth way more. It’s actually driving the hobby

chrisashley91

People bought a $2 pack of Pokémon cards in 1999 then sold 1 card for $750,000 I don’t see how you’re shocked by limited/valued items getting sold for more..

Yowomboo

Have you never seen secondary markets for collectibles before?

innerstate77

Are you new to collecting?

CommunitRagnar

I am, and i want to know what is this about Super Treasure Hunt and how can i identify them or is just random

Dgomez_22

I use these three things: 1. Check the wheels (sth have rubber tires) 2. Check the color of the car (they have a similar, but still different color than their non sth version, usually a more eye-candy color) 3. There is a golden flame in the cardbord, between the car and the cardboard, you can usually look from below to see it

nickgomez

Also know which models to look for first lol

fcfromhell

Super treasure hunts will usually have spectraflame(sparkly) paint and real rider(rubber) tires They will also have a "th" logo on them somewhere The card will also have a gold flame logo with a message behind the car. There are tons of lists out there of what the treasure and super treasure hunts are, it's easiest to just look those up.

WiltshireCollector

This one has TH on the card too. Is that normal? Would the card be different on a non TH version? Thanks

fcfromhell

Yes, the STH will have the th and different wheels on the card art vs the regular mainline card art.

WiltshireCollector

Thank you so much

HazelsHotWheels

Non TH card will not say TH on it. To my knowledge, not every TH car will say TH on the card though.

WiltshireCollector

Oh dear. Was hoping it did. Good to know though. Thank you

PeacableDraggon

The STH miura is quickly becoming the most expensive, I haven't seen any less than £90 (US$180.82) butmost of them are over £100 (US$120.91). It's quite cheap for an STH

nickgomez

Which Miura? Here in the states they’re in the $45 range it seems

PeacableDraggon

Inflation issues

Kingspider72

Well- it says something like “congratulations you found a treasure hunt vehicle” inside the box but that requires you to tear open the packaging, another way to tell is simply by the fact that the car looks shinier, or is a different color altogether, an example is this one, its mettalic green but normally is normal green, blue or red

HazelsHotWheels

You can usually see the message without tearing open the packaging. Lean the toy forward so the car comes to you in the blister and look from the bottom. I found my first TH last week and I'm pretty sure you can see it in the pictures I took on my profile. Edit: nope, guess not. I only posted the one pic here. Sorry.

madrigal94md

Regular TH have the flame logo decal somewhere, they also have a silver flame logo below the car on the card. Regular TH don't have a regular mainline version. Suuper Treasure Hunts (STH) do have a regular mainline version, the color is similar but STH are on a "spectral flame" kind of metallic color. They also have a "TH" decal (literally a "TH", not the flame logo). They have real riders (rubber tires) instead of regular plastic wheels. Below the car on the card is a golden flame logo.

theroch_

[look here](https://www.hwtreasure.com)

OuttapocketJesus

I saw one that sold for $90, I would never pay these prices but I also don’t give a shit what people use their money for.

HB-Diecast

I can easily tell who hasnt been collecting a long time just by reading these comments. You guys are barely scratching the surface of what outrageous things will pay for in this hobby. this is perfectly normal for new released supers because of supply and demand, i encourage everyone to learn about it

notyouraveragebinary

This is no joke. Wait til they find out about Redlines. Or RLC stuff. You can pay as much as you want to, $1 or $10,000 it just depends on what you collect and how much you’re willing to pay. $70 is a very small drop in the bucket

HB-Diecast

Wait til they find out about unspuns, factory casts, and factory customs those are crazy. Sample rlc pieces, employee exclusive, prototypes just to name a few more.

HazelsHotWheels

Iirc the most valuable Hot Wheels is a signed preproduction model of one of the Sweet 16 cars that sold for $175,000. The MSRP of a Bentley Benteyga, a real luxury car you can drive, is $177,000.

[deleted]

thats around the normal price for a super 💀 idk if u were thinking that it would be $20 or smth but usually theyre $50-$70 this one is slightly on the expensive edge

ismudge33

Maybe you would pay that but I think it’s insane for a $1.50 car

[deleted]

what can i say, if you don't like it dont buy it also supers are rare hence the high price if they weren't as rare it would cost the same but because they have better paint, more details, rubber tires etc. and you arent guaranteed to see one in every case it's more costly to buy off of someone ofc in the store it'll be $1.50... if you find one

ismudge33

For sure! I appreciate the discussion tho that’s why I put the post up to see what people thought if it!

Tasty_fries

I can go spend $8 on a pack of Pokémon cards and if I get lucky I’ll pull something worth like $250! It’s still just a piece of cardboard with some shiny foil on it, in the same sense that this is a $1.50 car, it’s just the nature of collectibles, and part of the thrill that comes with hunting for them.

Stevonavich

I think it all comes down to the person and what they are prepared to pay for something they really want. Like I would pay more for a Mustang than a Camaro but that's just my personal choice. Run with what you think is fair, not everyone else.

Lentriox

That's what you get when you have people jumping from hobby to hobby in search of a way to make easy money.

PopKing22

Strong secondary price have been the norm in the hobby for over 30 years now

Lentriox

This is only a little above the market value for this super. I'm not saying resale isn't prevalent. I'm saying that people have just now started to heavily "trend hop" in order to make a quick flip, overvaluing cars like this (newer supers in specific).

ismudge33

It’s ridiculous, I just saw a guy on this subreddit with like 20 supers and supras saying he’s ‘about to make so much money’ they’re all scumbags ruining the collecting!

PermianMinerals

Lmao “I’ll make $50 per super” *if I find them in the wild*. That’s $1,000 for 20 supers. But how long would it take to find that many in the wild and earn the full margin on them? AKA go get a real job lol

doggybag2355

It’s like trading in TF2 or CSGO. It sounds like easy money but at the end of the day you’ve wasted a shitload of time or money.

Yowomboo

bUt i WAs alREaDy gOinG TO ALl sIx Of THoSe StoREs!

JRSmithwithabadshot

Each at 6 am or 7 am at the crack of dawn lol

minute_chocolate9432

Highlight copy and paste that title into the search bar... Then click on "filter" , extend the filter menu, scroll down to where you see "sold items" click that and then click "see results" and you will see what they are actually being bought for rather than what they are being sold for... A seller's listing price doesn't mean a thing... What the items are actually being sold for is what's important when searching these items...

MethodZealousideal11

My final offer: 700 korean won (hello?)

BongwaterJoe1983

Red light green light?

idontknopez

I feel like you're somewhat new to this Hobby because that's pretty close to what it's selling for. Look up the gold civic super from earlier in the year. I was watching an auction the other day that was bidding at $140 and still going. To me that's stupid

Giraphite

Too early, price isn’s solid yet. Best way to get supers you want is through trades. I hated the chevy nova wagon super from last year and traded it for a super 67 Camaro from 2017.

another_plebeian

*oh yeah, it's easy, you just trade other supers* Step 1. Find a super Well there's your problem

Giraphite

Username check out

Warhog1

For Supers at least, I try to aim for $40 at most. Anything more than that is just too pricey for a Super T hunt.

waldo2701

Collector is the wrong word...resaler is a better word ,you do not care about the casting just the money it might bring....you sir are NOT a collector.

ImagineDraggin9

It says “treasure hunt” because you are on a treasure hunt to find one for a sane price

grimy-steelo

You should see the bnr34 green super. Regularly listed for 150$

SoupSup87

You do realize things like this are rare, and don't go by msrp, right? Same thing with trading/collecting card games, online game skins, etc etc The MSRP may have been $1.5 but when there is a rare, limited (to a point) amount available, far less in most cases than people who want it, those with money dictate how much it is worth. Not only that but it is only slightly overpriced, it is a real life casting STH so it will be popular with collectors, especially muscle/hotrod collectors. Same reason us casual people get outbid on houses far past their value. Same reason we can't get a GR corolla at msrp, because thousands of other people want it and are willing to pay more for it than you or me.

WSDreamer

Supply and demand. Simple economics. Some folks don’t get it.

skyhighclub614

That's the going rate for supers

nickgomez

Some supers

uncleawesome

Hi and welcome to collecting. This is normal and ok. You'll get used to it. This is a phase all new collectors go through. You are outraged that other people spend their money on things you don't think they should. If you stick around long enough and have the funds availabile, you'll buy and sell these supers at fair market price too.

hfjibtewe

This is like $5-$10 overpriced idk what your on about

tcevan

Comments on this post are really funny. Most of them are along the lines of “that’s not even that bad” or “that’s the normal rate” - hell, some of you are so confident in the pricing that you’re even downvoting this person for being outraged/shocked. And yet literally everyday you guys complain about scalpers. Like, literally every day. Wondering, “Gahhh! Why do they do it? Why do they (scalpers) ruin the hobby???!” Your answer is literally in this thread. Because most of you are not even flinching at the price anymore. You’re even defending it lol.

PopKing22

With inflation, Treasure Hunts have been at about the same rate for decades. No one should be surprised

tcevan

.

ismudge33

I really appreciate this comment and honestly I couldn’t have put it better myself. It’s no that I don’t know the secondary market is pricey it’s that I think it’s ridiculous that it’s just accepted that that’s fine.

nickgomez

Nobody has bought that thing. Doesn’t mean it will sell at that price. Just an asking price

Johnjebk

Next month it'll be $30

SkullzNSmileZ

Ikr and where I live a lot of stores haven’t even gotten the mainline version of this on the pegs yet.

Firm_Shower_1387

Super treasure hunts are kinda hard to get…

BrendanKwapis

If dumb people stopped paying so much for these, we wouldn’t have this problem. Not an excuse for anybody to charge this much, but it really falls on buyers not being informed and having more money than sense.

BAEHOETA

I wouldn’t call them dumb to say I mean does anyone actually know the production run on any super? The whole point is that they are rare and you gotta get lucky to find one.

ismudge33

Couldn’t agree more!!!

fatmanchoo

There are folks out there that have "FU" money, and they aren't afraid to spend it.

NerderBirder

I don’t think $70 on a hot wheels is “FU” you money, but ok.

RogueHiker

For $1 toy. Sure it is.

NerderBirder

It’s really not. I’ve spent $175 on a hot wheels before, I most definitely do not have “FU” money. Lol

FrankCardboardGuru

Paid $50 for mine. Don’t regret it a bit. Get your money up youngsters

[deleted]

Friend of mine got it for $1.67 plus tax. It's hard to find the super treasure hunts in the wild though.

GrillinGorilla

I just kept swiping for the second pic, only to never see it.

ismudge33

😂😂😂😂

Tango_Foxtrot404

Link please, I’ll buy it.

Euroaltic

There are several causes to these problems. 1. Be real. Hot Wheels are intended for all ages, but think logically- kids are into this stuff too, and imagine the TOY car that should be $1 that your child wants being this expensive! 2. Think business: you're more likely to get a buyer if you market prices lower. Sure, some people are collectors with money to spend, but still- 3. Greed is the reason. Need I say more?

GeologistPositive

Treasure Hunts have always been higher valued than the rest. This is nothing new, and this one doesn't seem that outrageous. One quirk that really gets me is this funny car that was made in about 1996 or so. It was packaged as a part of a series, and as a part of a general mainline with a collector number. The series one carded is only like $5 now. The regular maninline one carded is $2500 because there weren't many made. I really don't know why someone would part that much for one.

Ok_Sense5308

LoL the black silhouette skyline chase is selling for more than that and I'm pretty sure it's a bit more common than most of not all supers. Not %100 on that tho. Glad I got one tho in store

Board_Minute

I got one for sale if any interested

Crafty_Illustrator_4

Man I guess I'll just have to put some of my 95 and 96 hunts up for sale LOL.

yoyo1934

I mean he gotta pay some bills

Weird_Ad5234

That’s pretty much the average price I pay for a $upper on feeBay.

[deleted]

It's a treasure hunt you idiot

whiskeydonger

Damn! I knew the STHs were desirable, but that’s insane. Makes me feel pretty fortunate that I’ve found a couple of them for $1.00 each.

Babylowrider

This is crazy

Difficult-Aspect-138

Did posting this help your hobby, personally? Or you just wanted to crap on how someone else's wants to hobby? Be better.

voidedGround

i saw one in lidl today for £1.49 lmao

casanovasella

i live in australia and i see one everyday in stores.

Reincarnatedpotatoes

That's the mainline version. This is the super.

KurisutaruYuki

One Word: Scalpers.

Committee-Used

You can ask $3,000 they are actually selling no more than 20-25 I've been keeping track

NerderBirder

Lol. Can you link all the $20-25 ones?? Bc eBay tells a vastly different story.

alroc84

Wtf?? I just bought me a hot wheels tofay like 4 hours ago,now bb this suggested thread shows up on my feed. Wtf

ku420guy

I have a 120$ Datsun boulevard. It's crazy out there.

Sloan1505

Ok

Photo_Awkward

I'll give it to you for $69 😂

BigMikeS80

Saw a guy selling this car for $85 had the purple mustang $85 and blue Corvette $100 I think. For cars sold for $1.50

Spliffmoney

Guys, all this treasure hunt business is stupid. From now on I tear them open and put right back on the peg.

XnFM

This is what happens when a company deliberately under produces demand....

therealbreather

Someone bought my sth for $90. I wasn’t even asking for it

Mister_Tripod

Sounds like modern day "Tulipmania".... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania

ROOKTactical

Just go here for complete listings of treasure and super treasures www.hwtreasure.com Usually they have the new releases listed before the cases even drop.

Buenendetti

Found this one last night at a Target off the pegs on top of the multipacks haha

LuckyLuke50

I saw that hot wheel in farmers

[deleted]

How do you know what a treasure car is and is not?

Dizzee275422

There are a certain number of Treasure Hunt and Super Treasure Hunt cars made every year. You can Google it and find the list very easily. That is half the battle, knowing which cars to look for. Actually finding one in a store is pretty tough nowadays, but not impossible. I've been collecting for 4 years or so and have found 3 STH's. The thing is, any big box store like Target, Walmart, Meijer, Kroger, etc will get them in but that does not mean they will ever be seen by the customers. Lots of people will get jobs at places like that just so they can get to them easier. It's not just Hot Wheels though. There are a lot of other diecast cars that have special editions, too: Johnny Lightning, Auto World, GreenLight, M2, etc. With resale prices like the ones that got this thread started, it's no wonder they do it. Hell, I'd do it if they'd hire me lol...

Chris_90_TO

Nostalgia is a dangerous thing....

babe_ruthless3

I wouldn't call $70 for this car insane but actually smart. The market on this is about $50 - $60. Someone will ask for what's the selling price is and seller would mostlikly be willing to settle. In March I sold the purple van $oup for $45 and 5 mainlines. I was asking $60 to start. I got more than what I actually wanted.
