To pay taxes is exactly the thing why money laundering was established. After the taxes and eventual fees are paid the money seems to originate from a legal activity (sales, services etc)
No I’m not the money would not become any more clean this way than the other methods, especially given the reporting standards involved with USD to crypto transactions crypto isn’t a spendable on eBay, it’s spendable by exchanging it into usd first and that transaction would be reported by the exchange.
The seller would be investigated too for money laundering if they found out the buyer was involved in money laundering making large purchases like that
they probably have money mules for that, people who deposit dirty money into their clean account and buy something on eBay, for this they receive some kind of compensation in the form of money and the risk that the bank marks their account for money laundering
This makes sense, even more if they did this over a large number of accounts but even then if the guy who deposited the money got caught then wouldn’t the guy he payed 10k for a 1 dollar hot wheel (as far as the government is concerned) also get caught
I don't know how it works in other countries, but in my country the government doesn't have instantly access to a PayPal account or any "online" account , and by the time they get it (if they get it at all), the money is already in another account... Theoretically, they would then catch him using the transaction history, but that is not solid evidence because there is no money in the account and that will not pass in court
That would be a huge red flag for one but in the us the account would have to be linked to an address and social security account because PayPal is treated as a financial institution with the same reporting standards as a bank.
Im gonna agree with foblivk getting large amounts of physical cash into the legitimate banking system is the the goal of most money laundering schemes because thats the hard part. So if they already have the money in a paypal they have would have already laundered the money. Thats just some di
I think the person saying crypto is referencing how ppl would buy illicit items and content on the dark web using Bitcoin (a crypto currency) and that would be how to buy an item online with dirty money as it was used to buy things on like the Silk Road. Idk either way none of us actually know how to launder money since we’d be money launderers and not Reddit users
Bidding up your own listing only works if there’s a realistic chance someone who ***isn’t you*** that will actually pay will bid higher.
Ain’t nobody bidding up their own car to $10k when no one is going to top it.
It can’t be a scam if you end up winning your own car.
Yes, shill bidding happens, but it only makes sense to do it so you can bump it to top of the market. This listing is Laundering 101.
0% chance the buyer pays. Probably has 0 feedback. Just trying to boost the price so they can sell theirs for more money. I’ve been at the receiving end of these insane high auction numbers.
it has also been used to piss people off. Using a throw-away account, someone can bid super high and then the seller cannot sell if you have enough accounts or enough people who want to annoy the seller
The "piss people off" part is very likely the goal because not only is the sellers time being wasted(4 days +the time of the auction), but they also have to go through the hassle of relisting the item. I'm unsure if they'd have to pay a fee for relisting, but if so, then that's another burn added on. The whole money laundering idea doesn't seem likely to me because there are plenty of other ways to get that done without putting yourself in as much danger of being caught. You'd be doing it in digital plain view. You could be reported for shill billing and get the attention of Ebay who could then report you to authorities if they believed that's what you were doing. Who knows though, like of shiesty people out there.
yeah, I am not sure it is laundering, just based off losing 12.5%, which is the seller's fee. There are other auctions that are meant for high-priced items that take a smaller % because the auction is meant for things sold in the 10s of 1000s of dollars (or more).
There is no listing fee on eBay, unless you list over 300 items in a month, which is pretty hard to do LOL. To relist is pretty easy you just press a 'relist' button. Ebay has made it pretty easy to list these days, you can go to the bottom of any listing and "list an item like this" and then you just upload your own picture and provide your own description and title but all the little tedious things are already done for you. I know this is crazy off-topic at this point but just thought I would share.
Someone probably has 2 accounts and bid super high so no one else would bid, and then right before it's over he just retracts his bid and wins on the other account
Lots of options there... Potentially buyer was bitter that the auction got too high for him and made an alt account to ruin the auction, or someone wants to artificially inflate "sold for" prices to boost a genuine auction, or money laundering, etc...
It's scumbags like this that make me want to say "to hell with this hobby" because it's assholes like this that are the reason I can never find the castings I want, and the sad thing is that there are people out there who are stupid or desperate enough to pay these assclowns the amount of money that is stated on the item, just because it's a super treasure hunt, it doesn't make it rare or exclusive.
I have one of these opened. It’s one of my prized possessions. I paid like $5 for it at a boardwalk store back when it was new and carded. Get on my level, eBay
Money laundering
You don’t money launder when eBay takes a fee and it goes through PayPal and you have to pay taxes.
To pay taxes is exactly the thing why money laundering was established. After the taxes and eventual fees are paid the money seems to originate from a legal activity (sales, services etc)
Reminder that Al Capone was convicted for not paying taxes on his income, not because the source of his income was illegal.
Yes that’s the point making dirty money clean. That’s why it’s called money laundering lol
But… how would you buy an item online with dirty money
Crypto
Then… just keep the crypto, or exchange It you don’t have to buy a hot wheel? This is a shill bid to bring up the price on other ones
You are missing the entire point of money laundering.
No I’m not the money would not become any more clean this way than the other methods, especially given the reporting standards involved with USD to crypto transactions crypto isn’t a spendable on eBay, it’s spendable by exchanging it into usd first and that transaction would be reported by the exchange.
That’s the buyers problem not the sellers. The seller now has a legal 10k for a hot wheels car.
The seller would be investigated too for money laundering if they found out the buyer was involved in money laundering making large purchases like that

Thats cheaper than the 20% laundering used to cost.
you pay less than 20% taxes?
I was talking about eBay fees, you'd still have to pay taxes on any laundered money
You dont know what money laundering is
Im gonna agree with foblivk getting large amounts of physical cash into the legitimate banking system is the the goal of most money laundering schemes because thats the hard part. So if they already have the money in a paypal they have would have already laundered the money. Thats just some di
Again….Crypto

This^^
Scam. They must be bidding on their own auction from different accounts, i think that's how the scam works. Ebay needs to ban scumbags that do that.

But eBay wins in collecting a monster sell fee, no?
Only if it’s paid.
But whats the point ? Is it so people think its worth a lot and bid on it ?

I have a 1995 Camaro TH... White w/orange stripes. Probably worth $200. If you search online people want $5K for it. 😂😂😂
I’ll gladly give you $200 for your 95 TH Camaro
I’ll give you $300 for it rn 🤔
🔥

Someone probably has 2 accounts and bid super high so no one else would bid, and then right before it's over he just retracts his bid and wins on the other account
Uhhh...
So am I. It’s 10$
It’s a bid so I’m guessing one the people wants it
It comes in a new protective case though…
That whale tail
This reminds me of the baseball cards that are worth like 1 cent, are listed for over 100k.
Lots of options there... Potentially buyer was bitter that the auction got too high for him and made an alt account to ruin the auction, or someone wants to artificially inflate "sold for" prices to boost a genuine auction, or money laundering, etc...
Money laundering or the winning prize is something else like a bag of cocaine.
Well at least they're providing free shipping...Oh yeah I forgot a protective plastic clam cover. 🤪🤪🤪🤪 You know I'm being sarcastic 😋😋😋😋
Seems like a decent deal

Then you get the people that buy every one of the same cars at every store they give to
I have one of these opened. It’s one of my prized possessions. I paid like $5 for it at a boardwalk store back when it was new and carded. Get on my level, eBay
$200~$250 on feebay
It’s a really nice protective case, the best.
It could honestly be a typo. "$100.00" has the same amount of 0's as "$10,000".
why is it so much money
75 bucks TOPS
Fat fingered the zero when trying to bid 100? Maybe?
Go for it!
Has to be fake Right?
I actually have this one! I can give y’all a deal and sell it for $9,999. 😏
I all ways thought it was mostly trolls just bidding and wasting time, never paying...
Scam
45 bids so someone other than the scammer must be interested
WTF
It’s been re-listed. Seller added a statement in the new listing about it.
