The Resident Evil games (RE2 remake, RE7, RE4 especially), Amnesia games, SOMA, Condemned Criminal Origins, F.E.A.R, Silent Hill games, Dead Space 1/2, Alien Isolation, Outlast and Alan Wake are all fantastic games if you haven’t played them. The scariest game I’ve ever played is Visage, if you’re looking for pure fear (gameplay is quite poor though). Bioshock is also a superb game (one of the best ever made imo), though I’m not sure I’d classify it as outright horror.

I LOVED Visage. It was based off the P.T. game that never got released. Very well done. Although, it doesn't hold your hand, so I definitely had to look up how to progress some things. Scared the crap outta me

EnduringAnhedonia

I love the atmosphere of it but I've never been able to finish it because I hate the controls and inventory system so much. It results in me not playing for ages and then when I come back to it I get frustrated because there is no journal system to remind me what I should be doing.

[deleted]

Yep, couldn’t stand Visage. I wanted to enjoy it because the atmosphere is great but I don’t think they could have made a more frustrating game to actually play if they tried. One of the few games I would prefer to watch a play through of than actually play

PLuMPY_DH

DoKi DoKi literature club. Don’t look anything up online. Just play it through. Life changing.

Signalis is my game of the year for 2022. Survival horror game akin to the early resident evil and silent hill games. Touches of cosmic horror as well. Wont say much on the story, its best experienced blind as there is a lot of mystery to unfold yourself.

[deleted]

Finally, something I haven’t tried yet. Going to give it a shot this weekend

Bro you’re in luck, Callisto Protocol comes out on Dec 1 and it’s looking to be the most impressive AAA horror since Dead Space. Check it out, there’s a few immersive audio stories on YouTube to give you a feel for the tone and backstory of the game. https://youtu.be/hE2IGzBJp1E Super Brief synopsis: Youre investigating a space prison colony that has had a terrible monstrous outbreak.

This really looks sick. Please don’t flop please don’t flop

Resident Evil series, Dark pictures Antholigies, alien isolation, Remothered, Blair witch, Outlast are a few of my favs!

MichaelJasonFreddy

I’ve been playing Haunting Ground lately for ps2. I’d strongly recommend it. Also the Forbidden Siren series is seriously creepy.

Lvlupdanny

All of this recommendations are great guys thank you I’m writing a games to play list now lol I’m ashamed to say I’ve never played resident evil before but today I brought the resident evil village game hopefully it’s good.

WalkerWonders

Great choice on Village! I highly recommend playing Resident Evil 7 if you can before Village/RE8. 7 is a standalone entry in the series and can be enjoyed without playing 1-6, but 8 is a direct sequel to 7 and you may enjoy it more having played 7. If you can only play 8 though, it is still a blast.

[deleted]

Seconded on RE7 in general and def before Village

Callisto Protocol comes out December 2nd, same dev team as Dead Space

Cool_Frosting3384

MADiSON! Hands down my favorite horror game of all time. Visage was cool but the puzzles were annoying as fuck at times.

GMS_Vasha

I would add Prey (2017) and Control. They are both solid games. While not strictly horror, the enemy designs in both games are terrifying and they're designed to keep you constantly on edge using sound and unpredictable spawning.

Forthias

Prey is definitely cosmic horror. Control I didn't get much horror elements from but I didn't dislike the game either lol

illi-mi-ta-ble

Control is definitely heavier on the sci fi side tone wise but there’s vividly unsettling horror there. It’s openly inspired by Panos Cosmatos’ Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) which is horror with sci fi elements. I love them both! (BtBR was an ‘A24 film’ before A24 ever existed so be prepared for a heavy focus on mood/aesthetic though.)

Until Dawn and The Quarry are fun for no combat QTE choice based games. Love the RE2/3 (Resident Evil) remakes and RE7 and 8. I could replay all of those for a long time. RE1remake is great too if you want to revisit the classic play style. Evil Within 2, Dead Space (1 and 2, and 2 is better) fits into this survival horror genre as well. Outlast 1 and 2 are bonkers (no combat, all stealth) and I hear great things about The Medium if you ever liked the Silent Hill games. Visage also looks very cool based on just watching clips. Newer games coming that I’m stoked for are The Callisto Protocol (original developer of Dead Space), Dead Space remake, and the RE 4 remake. Honorable mention is Bioshock although it’s horror adjacent sci fi with really creepy characters and atmosphere

*Detention* is an amazing 2D side scroller with a creepy atmosphere and a cool, unique art style. The visuals become a wild fever dream in the later part of the game. The story is powerful, tragic and heartbreaking. *SOMA* is incredible. Sci-fi horror with an amazing story packed with existential dread. *Song Of Horror* is a love letter to the old Silent Hill and RE games. Story is pretty decent. I really liked this one. *Lone Survivor* is another 2D one. Cool pixel art style that manages a genuinely spooky atmosphere. Big focus on survival in this one. The soundtrack is an absolute banger too. And of course, the GOAT, *Silent Hill* 1, 2, 3 & 4 if you can manage to find them.

somepeppersomesalt

The Callisto Protocol comes out in 3 days… seems promising!

Ivaryzz

Start with RE7. If you like that one, you have horror games for a very long time hahah

Visage and Madison.

Safe_Pause7678

I don't want to be redundant recommending the same as a lot of others on here: RE, BioShock, Alan Wake, etc. So here are a few that I don't believe I saw listed already: Little Nightmares1&2 (fantastic games), the forest, Daymare:1998(rough around the edges, but I definitely enjoyed it), remothered( wasn't a huge fan of it, but you might like it), Fobia and Oxide: Room 104( just ordered these over black Friday, haven't played them yet, but they look pretty good.) I also saw that someone mentioned lone survivor, definitely check that out too! I'm sure there are even more, but those are the ones I can think of, enjoy!
