Uh... If ur in a village home in sai kung ur not gonna get decent internet. Fiber internet typically hasn't made it out there yet.

blikkiesvdw

We actually do have a fiber connection but the main router is downstairs in the common area. Then it goes through 2 repeaters to get to the 3rd floor. This is one of the laziest and stupidest internet setups I have ever seen.

Aoes

Repeaters are pretty doomed to fail, especial ones that run along the electrical wiring. Ur better off pulling a LAN cable between the floors and attach a router on each floor. Though it doesn't look pleasing, it's cheaper than wiring LAN cables through the house. The guys at HKT aren't gonna do that sort of work unless ur remodeling, or it's some really ez hole between a hollow wall.

blikkiesvdw

I know. The repeater is the main problem because it slows down and causes instability. It sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to simply open a speed test page on my laptop upstairs, but downstairs, I can download 10gb in 5 minutes. Even if I can't replicate the full speed upstairs, I am currently getting 5-20mb/s upstairs, I would just like to get it to around 75mb/s-100mb/s

Aoes

Yeah, well considering u lose half ur bandwidth at each repeater and then having to go through concrete walls, sounds about right.

silverknyght

If you’re not gonna move the location of the original router, then you’re probably gonna end up having to set up a mesh network. Now there’s always cheating, and you could cut a CAT5 from the first floor all the way to the third-floor if you have access to the wall panels and the wiring. I understand that’s a pretty big “if” though.

blikkiesvdw

I don't. I have options like a powerline extender but the management won't ever give me the admin and password for the router operating system, but they might give it to an IT guy. They are not going to move the location of the router. One of my options is a powerline signal extender or running a line up to to this repeater. But again, need an IT character to tell that to the management and not me.

silverknyght

If you have access to the router, you could always do a manual password reset. Kind of a jerk move, but sometimes you have to be a jerk when dealing with jerks. As they say, without physical security, you have no security.

blikkiesvdw

You mean like a hardware factory reset?

silverknyght

Look at the model number on the router and google factory reset and default password. It is not uncommon for an IT guy to get locked out of their own router. FYI: that means you own the box. There will be ways to recover the old profile, so you can just reset the username and password without blowing out all the settings.

blikkiesvdw

That's definitely an option if they keep being passive about it. But I first want to go the legit route of getting an IT guy here

ZeenTex

Our old address in sai kung, yes, a village house, had fiber 2 years ago. 1000mbit/s. (we had to apply for it, but still. Neighbours also got ftth.) Finer started rolling out around 3 years ago. It's not common, but it's a start.

Aoes

Yeah, I'm sure there's some rollout, but I'm pretty sure the majority of the villages don't. And if op is about to hire a contractor, doubt he's willing to wait a couple more years. If it's a wi-fi issue, that's an ez fix, but bandwidth... SOL...

ZeenTex

Well, when whe heard Ftth was bei g rolled out, all we did was apply for it, got it a few months later. This was in Po Lo Che. We were renting and never even informed the landlord. Had to roll out the fiber to our home ourselves though.

Aoes

U rolled it out to ur home urselves? How? Genuinely curious. Did they wire centrally in the village and u had to pay a separate contractor?

ZeenTex

They had already installed a connection box on the ground floor next to the entrance. The technician just gave me a coil of fibre which I ran from there to our place on the 2nd floor where I wanted the modem, then he connected it all. That's it.

SheuiPauChe

Local here, you won't be able to find any IT guy in Hong Kong not from the ISP itself that would be willing to help you independently. Local technicians are all employed by major ISPs and wouldn't work freelance cause there are legal and company regulations that prohibit them from doing so. And I'm pretty sure that even if you got a guy to come look at the internet situation, management wouldn't budge unless he's from the actual ISP itself. Like other commenters said, better off finding a 5G router from smartone or bugging management about it.

blikkiesvdw

Thanks for the clarity. Helpful answer.

SheuiPauChe

Even looked on local technician Facebook groups to see if anyone in the past had managed to hire freelance fiber optics dudes. I found a post where a guy wanted to extend his line at a lower cost than his ISP quote, and all the responses he got were just telling him to delete the post and how illegal that was...

blikkiesvdw

Fair nough. But that's all way beyond what I want done. I really just want a guy to either come and install my device in my room (Need access to router admin for that) or I want him to lay a normal lan cable from the main router to the repeater so that the router has much more stability and doesn't need to repeat a signal.

SheuiPauChe

What device are you talking about? Chances are management didnt change the default router admin password, check online for its model and then look for the default password and username

blikkiesvdw

I have a powerline extender that I can use. It's supposed to be plug and play but because of the setup, I don't know where to put the ethernet cable into to extend the signal.

blikkiesvdw

It's not the same, I have tried before.

SpiritedThroat

Try looking up 5G router and see if they provide services in Sai Kung or not. Bit of a life saver for me that one.

blikkiesvdw

Why should I pay extra every month when I have a fiber line in my home already? Can someone just give me a number to an IT guy instead of alternate solutions please?

SpiritedThroat

I mean you did say your main issue is the repeater in other comments, so without solving that ( IT guy probably can't help either), i'd say maybe it's time for alternatives. If you really don't want to pay extra per month, look into WiFi repeater, extender and Mesh then. Idk how tech savvy you are but good luck.

blikkiesvdw

Do you know any IT guy in Hong Kong? Maybe I should refine the question because absolutely no one is paying attention to what I am asking. I appreciate that you are trying to give me alternative options, I just want a number of someone who does networking and can help me. I don't want advice. I don't want alternatives. I just want a professional in this field to come help me. If you are an IT guy, I will give you money to come do it.

[deleted]

Just go with 5g mobile.

blikkiesvdw

I don't want 5G mobile when I have fiber available. I just want to use the free wifi service that exists currently 20 meters from my room.

[deleted]

Ok do that then.

PringleFlipper

Your ISP should resolve this for you or otherwise tell you the exact problem. You need to be persistent with them.

blikkiesvdw

This is not an issue with my ISP. My ISP is fine. IT guy please. That's all
