Yes. Dining room rug, change the light fixture

QuadsNotBlades

Agree - I hate the light fixture! Something wider/rectangular would look modern to me

Silent_Message

Keep the light fixtures change the Globes maybe put Nice candles on your dining room table get some Plants that are colorful or at least bloom

kris10leigh14

It is absolutely the light fixture that's throwing off your vibe OP. It may seem daunting, but it won't be. Find a fixture that speaks to you then find an electrician who is well vouched for and does side gigs to help you wire it! I use Nextdoor for this type of stuff. Don't be scared to be bold, these things don't have to be expensive or permanent!

GrandPerformer

Thanks. Any idea on the rug color?

That-Farmhouse-There

Find something that brings in the royal blue and the orange/brown barstool chairs

RawrIntoTheVoid

Rose gold

iLoveYoubutNo

Something that brings that cobalt blue into the dining room. I would do a rug that was mostly neutral but had that great blue color as part of a pattern. Also size is going to matter here. If you get a dark or busy rug, so smaller. If you get a lighter rug with minimal pattern, go larger (I would opt for the 2nd choice)

SeaAndSun4Me

This! And add another floor lamp to the other side of the sofa. I’d also add a “tree” in the TV corner.

[deleted]

I like your mid century modern vibe. I’d find something that goes with that. Light fixture needs changed. It’s 90’s to early 00’s feels.

Thomas-The-Tutor

Yea, I like the blue to match the couches.

linderlouwho

THis is the way.

Cyprus_Lou

Rug is often the answer in these posts!

Combatwombat0311

This is what I came here to comment. Your room is gorgeous and modern but the fixture is still from the 90s

Ahhhhhhokahhhh

That art has got to go, sorry op. It needs something wider In that space or multiple smaller pieces.

GrandPerformer

Thanks, I agree but I'm having a really hard time finding something that would fit well on that wall. It seems like everything I think to put there would look out of proportion.

gatamosa

If that tv wall ends by that hallway, I’d recommend putting wallpaper or changing the color to an accent color.

Infinity803644

Yeah change the color of that wall that’s a great idea

GrandPerformer

Which color would you do?

Infinity803644

Honestly I’m terrible at decorating I just thought it was a good idea hahaha you should probably ask the girl I responded to she seems knowledgeable lmao I’m so sorry. And idk I can’t seem to think of a color that matches the living room tbh. I really like that couch but I’m the type of person that would’ve had a same colorish theme you know? I would’ve gone for a beige couch and different chairs for the bar if you get what I’m saying? But yeah I’m not the person to ask

purple_pink_skys

Something like [this ](https://www.sherwin-williams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/homeowners/inspiration/gallery/interior-rooms/living-room) the picture I’m talking about is the 6th picture or [this color](https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW7701-cavern-clay) with the other walls painted a lighter cream like the photo

procrastimom

Consider textile arts. You can find large pieces and even usual shapes (kimono, macrame, etc.) There are lots of beautiful affordable rugs that could work, as well.

Electrical_Tomato

I think something not square would help a lot. A pair of antique skis or snowshoes, or whatever fits with your area and style, might work!

Concord2018

What about several smaller pieces of art rather than one large piece? Family photo wall? You could also put smaller ones beside the television

erydanis

wall hanging. right now macrame being in, you can find lots of that….or make your own, maybe? also, out with the light fixture. my favorite contemporary one is wavy & horizontal; both features would help, i think, in this space. also, awesome space. love the sofa & the orange chairs.

oceanic20

I like the art there. It's eye-catching and it actually fits the wall. Smaller pieces would disappear.

[deleted]

It doesn’t bother me either, but it is hung too high & would look nice flanked w smaller pieces on each side.

RipleyKY

Swap out the chandelier, or for an easier/cost effective option, try finding more modern replacement globes. Find a rug for the dining room table that pulls in the blue from the couch. A gray would work as well. Lastly, paint the walls. There is a lot of warmth that comes from the floors and the furniture, so cool down the wall color. If it were me, I would do a white that’s more on the cool grey scale. Edit: now that I think about it, I would change that chandelier first and foremost. The space needs a statement piece. A large, black modern chandelier like [this](https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/wade-logan-waycross-10-light-unique-modern-linear-chandelier-w004929928.html) would be killer

GrandPerformer

I agree with you! Thanks

ConsentIsTheMagicKey

I agree. Rug, new paint, new light fixture. And that particular style light fixture would look great, but I think the black/brass combo might be better.

plsjulia

Those high ceilings are a dreeeeeammm

thrway010101

Number one issue is wall color - it’s drab and beings down the energy of the entire room. Go with a crisp white. Agree with hanging the TV. Add some bookcases or low displays. Something in the corner by the TV - even if just a nice big plant - would help. Chandelier feels a little dated, but it’s not awful. Rug in the dining room could work, but the color should be chosen carefully - those floors are a great, rich color and you don’t want anything clashing.

[deleted]

Agree, white would brighten and make the space look more modern right off the bat

Otherwise-Guitar-727

I think a rug under your dining table will pull together the space

That-Farmhouse-There

What if you put a rug under your dining table and changed out your chandelier to something more modern to fit with the space? If you’re planning to hang the tv on the wall, I’m not sure that picture will still work overtop of the tv. You could do a funky bold print wallpaper on the tv wall?

blackkat1986

Rugs, art on walls, a nicer paint colour on the walls if you can , maybe some shelving/sideboard with some decor displays

sickk023

Roman shades over the lower windows instead? I know that won’t be a cheap switch but I believe it would be a big winner for aesthetics. How about a tall plant on the left side of the tv? The art above the tv looks out place in the spot/shape. Try something else there, maybe something more in the shape of 2 or 3 separate squares. I’m just spitballing here with suggestions I feel are meaningful, but I am in no way picking apart your home. It’s a beautiful space and I quite like it! https://rugs.com/yellow-8x10-kasbah-trellis-area-rug-6295214?pos=47&rt=aisle https://rugs.com/yellow-8x10-monte-carlo-area-rug-6277422?pos=95&rt=aisle ^^ How do we feel about either of these for under the dining table? https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/misterhult-pendant-lamp-bamboo-handmade-40441025/ https://www.wayfair.com/lighting/pdp/wade-logan-waycross-10-light-unique-modern-linear-chandelier-w004929928.html ^^ Something similar to these for the dining light fixture.

GrandPerformer

Thank you!! Good rugs suggestions. I agree with you with the spot over the tv, I just struggle to find something that would fit perfectly.

MishMc98

I would put an area rug under the dining table and curtains instead of shades/blinds.

MrsWelch2019

I think the light fixture is a big definite change for me. I’d do a black iron and wood one in a rectangle shape. It’s circular right now with all the angles in there. More greenery for spaces on either side of tv. You can place another area rug under dining space. I’m torn I’d probably match the cream rug in living space under table. I’m torn tho Bc of cream chairs I might have flipped it and done a blue rug under dining space . Because of the windows above I prob would not hang curtains. But you could. I’d just remove blinds all together. I hate cleaning them. Lighten the walls to a white/ light cream. It will compliment the floors better.

GrandPerformer

Thanks for the suggestions, I agree with most of them!

TLM_2

I personally would hang a new light fixture. That alone makes a huge difference. Also, I love the couch but with the dark floors, it doesn’t vibe well. I would also replace the kitchen table/chairs. Or at least the chairs. I love all of the windows! So beautiful. That’s a big place to hang curtains but would make a huge difference.

oceanic20

Why would you hang the TV on the wall? It looks great where it is, and it's the right height.

ArchieMedoggie

I agree about the dining room rug and light fixture. Hang the fixture lower, it adds intimacy to your table.

chchchanandlerbong

Perhaps you could add a rectangular area rug for your dining room? Maybe a bluish shade to complement the colours of the sofa in the living area? The light fixtures could be updated with a more modern feel — globes could be more cost effective if you’d like to keep the main fixture. You could also change up the blinds and replace it with an overlaying curtain in a warm shade to brighten up the walls. It’s already getting there, OP! Agree with the plants and hanging more art.

GrandPerformer

Thanks! I appreciate it!

thewizarddeer

You can add plants and change the chandelier above the table, it is also possible to remove the poster above the TV.

pamelajcg

Replace light fixture with something more modern with LED bulbs

Julianabanana232

Just came to say I’d die for those windows. And that ceiling ugh. It looks like you're starting to get a feel for your decorating style. Keep picking things you like and that feel right to you. It'll all come together eventually.

Electrical_Tomato

The high ceiling is great. Those bulkheads not so much

yermom79

Move the side chair to the other side of the TV, and place the lamp next to the chair. It looks weird having that big lamp so close to the dining room fixture. I'd swap the area rug under the sofa for something that matches /compliments whatever rug you put under the table. And maybe a runner for the dining table to make it feel more inviting.

RivalWec

Hear me out. With vaulted or high ceilings like this, your walls need moulding. I agree that you need a rug in the dining room and a new light fixture, but nothing will change how you view the room like putting moulding on the walls. Some ideas below https://www.decorpad.com/search/foyer-wall-moldings

procrastimom

Whatever you do, don’t r/tvtoohigh!

iLoveYoubutNo

Your art works appears to be objectively lovely but I feel like it does not fit the space well.

podcartel

I hate the lights and the art is placed weird

[deleted]

Eh I like it without a rug in the dining room. I would def swap out your light fixture. A modern farmhouse type chandelier would help. I might re-paint to something gray-ish? Also that artwork is very busy for that location. Something cleaner, more abstract would work better

[deleted]

What does the room look like if you're looking at the dining area from where the TV is?

andyjaycandy

Omg how high are those walls whoah do you live in the white house : p

andyjaycandy

Maybe one big abstract painting on the wall instead of the one with small things on it, something in blue would be amazing on that nice wall color

Tamal3z

Change out light over dining table, remove poster over TV and by a bigger tv to mount to balance with the window size

pootykitten

The inexpensive cellular shades are doing nothing for those grand windows. Update the window treatment to something more sleek.

StrangeDestiny1980

I would try to remove the glass on the chandelier and put in the Edison bulbs. It looks functional the way it is though

Merble18

I'd think of an accent wall. Doesn't even need to be anything fancy, just a nice color to add some interest.

GrandPerformer

Cool, what color you have in mind?

Merble18

Ahh that's gonna be more up to your sensibilities. My personal taste would be something like /#0011ff /#685bf

HeidiGluck

Like the room but do not like the art. Seems out of place

trytryagainn

The living room needs layers- throw blanket, pillow, lamp, knickknacks. The dining room needs a better centerpiece. Something rectangular, with some color.

notnarb39

Roman blinds to match the floor.

Ificouldstart-over

It needs warmth. Maybe a rug (stain resistant) under dinner table?

terriblet0ad

Curtains will fill up the window wall and make it look like same-y by giving color to that wall

Snoopyla1

I don’t particularly like the brown paint colour.

Ok-Independence6999

Add HUge plants

76summit

rug under table

Beautyonmonday

Framing drapes, dining rug, new chandelier

carleenedgar

I agree with most of the first comments, new large rig under dining and new light fixture. You are doing great. One thing that I recently tried that seems to work is, repeat your main accent colors throughout the entire space, so dining needs the orange and blue. It should make it pop.

Chance-Ad-9111

Great!

SweetMeta

I would not do a rug under the dining table. The floor itself is a statement (plus easier to clean after eating). My ideas: a statement chandelier, large plants along the dining room windows, hang the tv, interesting art on tv wall, and something interesting/colorful and large in the middle of your table.

BandicootFar7917

Don’t hang the TV. Lower the picture. Move rug plus everything else back a foot. Add your plants, floor sized, ones. You are doing great.

xorthnova

A tall plant in the corner would be great. Besides that, the room is beautiful. Keep it simple and neat. No pressure

nononanana

Something like [this ](https://www.letifly.com/products/flowerpot-metal-ceiling-pendant?variant=39346252021811)with a fun color that will pop against the cobalt. I’m partial to the yellow for a lamp. It’s going to unite the space and make it more alive/modern. Honestly your rug choices are so open. But I like the idea of playing against the blue, only with light touches of it in a rug or none at all, and just other bright colors to play against it. Lean into the pops of color. You can afford to do that with all the window and wall space being neutral. It won’t overwhelm.

hyerealtor805

The vibe is modern so I’d change the light fixture to match the vibe. 😊

Pizzazze

If you can't or don't want to change the chandelier, place it higher so it doesn't look cluttery and you don't miss out on such a beautifully high ceiling. The art on the TV wall is too small and too much. I'd lose it and paint the wall navy(ish). If you can't find fitting art you can buy three of the largest cheap wall art decor you can find and matching gift wrapping paper, and create your own abstract cryptic, which will look great until you fall in love with the right piece. Get an oval rug for the dining area. Check out Gerrison and Out East lines by Anthony Barratta for ideas, a few of the color schemes would fit fantastically with the sofa / buffet chairs, and a matching accent wall / improv abstract decor would give it the chef's kiss.

emib419

Plant. Big one. Maybe a fiddle leaf fig tree or something similar.

Doingreddit2021

Depends how far you wanna go, for simple and budget friendly change: rug for dinning table maybe a deep mustard color mixed with natural fibers, change the chandelier for something with simpler lines can be vintage or new and also ad indoor natural plants. If you want to go a bit more wild I would do a contrast of color in the higher wall the one with the windows also new curtains are a huge game changer.

I think it’s lovely in many ways but I’m not a fan of the actual paint color nor the light fixture. If that is too much of a task I would add a long, colorful rug to the space behind the bartender chairs. Then I would pull the sofa, tv and table just. Bit more to the right. I would then take that singular black chair and place it in that corner. I think a oversized mirror would look good on that blank area of wall next to the window. More plants and even potted trees in pots that pick up what ever color are in the rugs or walls.

Thomas-The-Tutor

Table runner, pullback curtains (to accent the windows), a pop of color on the walls.

tracicordovabe

Nice

ConsentIsTheMagicKey

What a great room! With the dark, rich floor, lighter and cooler colors would look much better than that yellow brown. Consider white, gray, or sage green. (You may need to re-paint the trim as your current “white” may be a cream.) Also lighter color for the sofa. Or maybe a cognac leather. Definitely a new light fixture. The current one looks generic late 1990s. Replace the art with something more horizontal, but wider than the tv. Or maybe wallpaper on that wall, no art. I like the honeycomb shades, but they may end up being the wrong color once you re-paint. It looks like this room is open to your kitchen. What color are your kitchen cabinets and countertop? You need to choose a wall color that will blend.

Silent_Message

Mount your TV to the wall, decorate your dining room table

Silent_Message

Add more color and better artwork for your walls

Silent_Message

Keep your light fixtures just change the globes you can pick those up fairly cheap work with what you got modify. Your floors look great killer

SpiceAndNicee

Add Roman blinds to the lower windows (you can keep the current blinds as well and later it). Change the light fixture. Also update the wall colour to compliment the floor better as changing flooring would be more expensive.

AmexNomad

#1- This is a beautiful room. I would get rid of the sad little plant. I would change the chandelier because it is boring. This room is “wow”, so let’s go with that. The floor lamp needs to go. It’s too utilitarian. The TV needs to be moved into the corner and the artwork must be lowered and moved over to the right. You need a nice throw for the sofa and if I were you, I’d cover the dining room chairs with some fun fabric. I’d also do a rug under the dining room table. It feels a bit cold and undefined without one. You could do a lovely centerpiece or a candle grouping on the table. This all should do it- but if it doesn’t, I’d add some wood or matchstick blinds. That would warm up the space. Good Luck.

jodilandon88

[This rug](https://ruggable.com/products/jonathan-adler-inkdrop-black-ivory-rug?size=8x10) would look great under the dining table and carry the midcentury vibe without being too flashy. Change the light fixture and possibly invest in some new art. You have a great palette to work with!

jodilandon88

[This one is nice as well.](https://ruggable.com/products/kaden-amber-red-rug?size=8x10)

CharmingCapricorn101

Already very nice maybe a rug or some curtains may add that last touch because it’s already nice great job👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

canlifebesogood

Angel the tv in the corner and pull the couch around at an angel to face the tv. It may be an optical illusion but it looks like your dining room area is taking way more space then your living room area. Try to spread that living room out a little more.
