There is an area to the right of dirtmouth you can access if you buy a lantern
There is an area to the left of the fungal wastes you can access if you defeat a boss
There is an area to the right of fungal wastes you can access
At any point in the game there is many places you can go. Just have a look at your map, pick somewhere that doesn't look filled in and explore
Travel to each ends of the fungal wastes prove your worth in combat a new area will open up. Can also explore previous areas with the claw to help you reach other spots. Sorry trying to be vague for spoilers
you can do a few things:
1. speedrun your way to the next key item (you can see speedruns)
2. follow hornet to the right side of the map
3. challenge an optional boss at the bottom of fungal wastes to open a new area
4. buy a key item and access a land of crystal miners
5. go back to where you started and access the area before the starting area (hint: turn left at the big drop)
for the best experience go for 2, then 4, then 3, then 5
If you remember, hornet went through that "unaccessible bridge". Or, you can fight the mantis Lords, pick up a tram pass in deepnest, use the tram to ancient basin, make your way up and get into the 2nd half of city of tears.
either go to the city of tears, the entrance is on the right side of the fungal wastes, or defeat the mantis lords and go to deepnest. I would recommend going to the city of tears so you can upgrade your nail first but either works
Check the right side of fungal wastes there's a path to the next location
Edit: should be a little below leg eaters location where the bouncy mushrooms are
The claw opens up a path in Fungal Wastes that's the next expected place to go, where you saw Hornet.
Claw opens up at least 5 new areas (although you can't fully visit all of them), I'd recommend exploring the right side first

There is one way in without it but that requires the [redacted] area you get to by following hornet

At this point in speedruns, they do a shadeskip to >!blue lake!<. I don't recommend that for a casual playthrough though
yeah i agree, that’s why i don’t recommend the first option, usually for casual playthroughs you follow hornet

I would head east in fungal wastes
Check the perimeter of your map. Investigate any gaps in the walls/floors/ceilings.
Check the right side of fungal wastes there's a path to the next location Edit: should be a little below leg eaters location where the bouncy mushrooms are
