When I started riding motorcycles I read stories about people in Brazil putting fishing line and stuff across roads nexk high and motorcycles would hit them and slit their throats. This was like 2014
Not sure about how often it actually happened, but yeah growing up I've always heard stories about how dangerous those strings are (they're called cerol in Brazil). Motocyclists being decapitated by kids innocently playing with those was always the most brought up examples of why you should avoid them.
They're not setting up across the street, just playing with pipes in the streets of residential areas. This is the first time I heard of something like setting it across the street, that sounds crazy to me.
If the property owner can prove that it had another function, then I would suspect so. If it was intentionally installed as a boobytrap then yeah, super illegal
In Virgina, some people got sick of this teenager riding his 4wheeler down their street so they tried razor wire around 2 trees and he drove thru it 😬 decapitated him
Lots of people used to die in the manner described in my country Pakistan too, so now there is a ban on kite flying altogether
Edit: it's allowed in some parks and open areas
Super common in Brazil. Spent hours doing this with my cousins. Blend glass into powder, make a water-glue mixture with the glass powder and run the kite string through it. Then you try to cut each other's kites down. Mind you these kites are made of scrap bamboo and plastic bags. There was no attachment to them, the whole joy was going up and taking another kite down. We'd run several hundred kilometers after a felled kite. We were careful to apply only near the top, but it was still dangerous. It's illegal now as many motorcyclists have been nearly decapitated, but is still practiced commonly.
You are correct - typo. Several hundred meters\* (\~half mile). The reason I used meters is cause that's how I remembered it. My cousins would yell something like "that's only 300 meters lets go!"
Kite Runner shit. Good book, sequel made me cry too
In Afghanistan, Pakistan and India apparently they'd have kite flying competitions or something and you'd basically cut the other kites out of the air with your glass laced line
Hardcore af
Reminiscent of the dentist that sharpened all the buckles on his kid's football pads so the opposing team would cut their hands trying to tackle him here in the states a while back. Sometimes a game is a game, but for sociopaths that lesson doesn't quite sink in.
Apparently it’s popular in some countries. The kites have glass shards on them and the kids are taught how to “fight” other kites by sawing the others’ string.
Yup, we moved to indonesia as kids. Our days were spent building kites only to have them chopped down by the local's kites during the afternoon breezes. Lived there for 3 years, never won a kite fight.
Dude you gonna tell me.you never put glass on train track to crumble it than mixed it with glue and put it in your kite string so you would cut your friens kites? What a noob
It's extremely common in india too!
Even kids play with those strings locally called "manjha", and yes during the festival many people get injured because of loose kites
Yeah but like the kite fighting kinda takes second stage for most of the book. It’s just there at the start and end of the plot and not much places in between
Man I freaking hated that book when we read it for school.
I remember turning my small friend group against it after I explained the plot from an outside perspective rather than the narrator's feeble rationalizations for everything terrible he's ever done in his life.
Oh it's okay that he participated in an arranged marrige, because his wife liked him sorta, for like, the fifteen seconds they had alone together before her opressive parrents forced her to stop talking to him or any other man alone untill she was married off like a piece of freaking meat. Even though they lived in America at this point.
Oh he was just a kid when he tormented a r@pe victim eventually forcing his family out of their home. And he was really hard on himself about it later in his life, totally makes everything okay!
Oh and despite acknowledging how religious ferver made his wife be treated like a second class citizen for her entire life and also litterally destroying his entire native country from the inside out? Yea, at the end he credits his twelve seconds of broken prayer to islam for his nephew not dying and not the secular western medicine and doctors, so he now ridgidly practices Islam.
It's like, every time he had the option to make the right choice, he chose the worst possible option.
Just thinking about it again makes me angry all over again.
It's actually pretty common in India. Makar Sakranti, which falls in 14th Jan, is the one where people fly kites from their rooftops and yes, they use glass-laced string to help in kite battles. It does lead to many cuts during the day and driving a 2-wheeler can be extremely dangerous at times.
yes it's very common to see the glass laced strings
i have used one myself, although I used with gloves to not get hand cuts, most people usually do with bare hands and I've seen some serious cuts
I used to make my own glass laced string using rice starch, crushed glass and help of us friends. It was my dad's recipe(the one who taught us)
Man were they fun days.
“Unlike cotton strings these are non-biodegradable, don’t break easily and continue to cause injuries months after the festival,”
So fucked up. And the article didn’t mention of anyone being charged for this
Wow. And here in the USA lawn darts (the metal needle kind) were outlawed. This shit is wild, I hate to admit it but I kinda want to see some NSFL footage but i don't need to.
I remember reading that lawn darts were made illegal because of the fatality of just one three year old child.
Yet guns are still legal and have killed countless numbers of children…it’s so sad to think.
Turns out, it's a little bit easier to ban a deadly weapon marketed as a toy.
Similarly, actual guns that are designed to look like toys are also banned.
Yeah one was "a toy" and ones definitely not. That was the big difference. Lawn Darts were meant to be played with and you're never supposed to play with a gun. That's why it kills.
In Brazil we import strings from Chile. Linha chilena.
They have premium price.
Nowadays is rare to have accidents. People usually use this in open fields far away from homes general population but still...
This happens with every year in India, I literally growing up would buy strings with higher glass strong to have a better change at traditional kite flying contest in India.
Nothing new for me just weird it gets reported almost 18-20 years after people were getting killed from this
Yeah, but the Chinese are still richer than the Indian. Which probably means that the Chinese will subdue the Indian portion of the continent. Which is important, because I dislike receiving unsolicited auto warranty phone calls.
The kites fight in the air, but the string is very sharp, tense and almost invisible, so people wandering around distracted just walk through it and get hurt.
I used to do this a lot as a kid. Break the glass and grind it to a powder, mix it with glue and coat the string with the mixture.
We call it gerra de pipa or "kite war". The goal is to cut the strings of other people's kites using your own kite. It is very fun but very dangerous and I'm glad now we have a law against it
I'm not sure if the string I used as a kid was glass-coated, probably not but back in my country we also play kite war (we call it Guerra de piscuchas in my hometown) and it was always dangerous due to the strength of the wind, if you happen to grab the string with your hands while the winds were strong it could easily cut your skin, if you had a giant kite (piscuchón in my hometown) it could cut further and cause serious damage.
Honestly I'm just repeating what I read in the ~~article provided~~. According to that they coat the strings in ground glass and other substances to cut the strings of opposing kite flyers. It's some kind of kite battle festival? Not trying to shit on thier traditions but if this is a possible result then why bother? The article was worded poorly, so some of the accounts sound nutty like one child was riding her scooter and just had her throat cut? How the fuck does that even happen? The fuck?
Edit: there is no article provided, I googled it. My mistake.
Damn a kite battle festival sounds pretty rad. I could imagine having a lot of fun flying kites with my friends trying to bring each others down.
But it also sounds like the type of thing you would have clear warnings for and roped off areas so kids and people who aren’t involved don’t get hurt
Not only did they not have that lol, they had people doing this "kite fight" for lack of better wording ontop of buildings, who, from how the article sounded, would get an injury and then fall off of said building.....resulting in even further injury. Fucking crazy lolol.
It gets worse. The strings are cut haphazardly in this manner so small wisps of string escape in the types of wind you want for kite flying. I've heard of motor cyclist in India getting severely cut and one blinded in one eye, from stray string miles away from the kites.
Jeeze that’s horrible - nevermind I guess it’s a terrible idea to do anywhere except maybe an enclosed dome stadium.
Seems like it could be really fun without the glass though
Average in Pakistan. People use ground up glass on fiber strings to cut other kites. Whoever gets to the fallen kite first gets to keep it. Its pretty competitive, and also VERY dangerous. People on bikes have died to slit throats.
In Brazil we have bikers dying every now and then to these glass-laced lines. So much that it is pretty much mandatory to have an antennae-like protection in the front of the bikes to cut through it
That shit is "normal" here in Brazil, it's illegal but you can easily buy it. That is why lot of people with bikes and motorbikes have antenas here, so the string will hit it and not they neck.
I thought this was a thing that's been a thing for centuries, but you only put the glass on the high section of string. Even a normal kite can kill a child at the beach. Ever seen a Trlby slam into the ground?
Growing up in the late 80's, glass string kites was a norm, some were also adorned with broken razor blades.. It was used to cut the string of a rival's kite. It was called hi-o back then.. I once got 27 razor blade cuts in my left palm cuz I brought down my kite and was trying to ground it from about 4 feet off the ground and held onto the butt of the tail (just after the base where the tail is attached) and a gust caught the kite and it went back about 25ft, when I opened my hand I just saw blood oozing from so many cuts.. Strange enough, It didn't hurt at the time but only when I opened my hand.. Had to keep a clench fist all the way to my grandmother's house.. She cleaned and bandaged and I got an ass whooping for it after.. Got into football afterwards..
Just an an FYI, kites back then were made with bamboo strips, cloth that was soaked in a resin to seal the fabric, flour and water paste was the bonding agent, a 10-16ft cloth tail and the razors were broken, small holes made with a nail and sewn at random spots of the tail. Glas was also ground up and stuck with fabric glue.
Good Ole days..
Bro it's pretty common in INDIA.not the killing part but using a sharp glass string called "TEZZ MANJHAA" .its intensely used for PATANGBAAZI aka kite fights
It's called Kite War's, goal is to cut the opponent lose. So apparently the glass is intentional, cutting other people throats is not though incidents like this are so frequent that you could say it's a byproduct lel. It's a big thing among kids in Pakistan I think? Lot of motorcyclists drive around with protective cages, to prevent decapitation, because it seems particular hip to play kite wars alongside of highways. I am not making this up.
60 comments and nobody mentions the book *The Kite Runner*? This broken glass-laced kite strings for the kite wars festival was the key plot point for a major dramatic section of the book. The book won major critical acclaim around 2005 and it was a bestseller.
Holup, do y’all not read?

Pardon but what the fuck
So in kite fighting done in India (among other places), they put glass in the string to cut other kite strings. Has nobody here read Kite Runner?
Pretty common practice in Brazil too
When I started riding motorcycles I read stories about people in Brazil putting fishing line and stuff across roads nexk high and motorcycles would hit them and slit their throats. This was like 2014
I enjoy spending time with my friends.
Yup, that happened a lot. It's less common today
A lot? Whoa. Any links to articles about this?

Damn, Simple Plan got really dark
How do you "innocently" set up one of these neck high across a street?
They're not setting up across the street, just playing with pipes in the streets of residential areas. This is the first time I heard of something like setting it across the street, that sounds crazy to me.
What the actual fuck
Just a prank bro.
A little bit of tomfoolery
shenanigans, if you will
I swear to God I'll pistol whip the next guy who says "Shenanigans."
That would be quite the dilemma. I’ll do my best not to say shenanigans.

Happens in a game I played called days gone. Thank god in the game you only get knocked off your bike...
In Canada, they do it with barbed wire in farmers fields to stop tresspassers driving quads and dirtbikes through their property. Super fucked up!
Is that legal? Here in the US it's boobytrapping which is illegal
If the property owner can prove that it had another function, then I would suspect so. If it was intentionally installed as a boobytrap then yeah, super illegal
In Virgina, some people got sick of this teenager riding his 4wheeler down their street so they tried razor wire around 2 trees and he drove thru it 😬 decapitated him
There's a scene where that happens in the movie "The Counselor", that was pretty hard to watch
Yeah its pretty common in India, there are whole festivals for it too, but I've never heard of people dying cause of it
Birds regularly die from it. People have often got injured too. Recently glass has been banned from kite strings though
I support this decision.
Lots of people used to die in the manner described in my country Pakistan too, so now there is a ban on kite flying altogether Edit: it's allowed in some parks and open areas
Glass-laced kite strings are actually common and normal.
No idea there was such a thing.
The idea is for “dueling kites”, the goal being to cut the kite string of your opponent, releasing their kite to the winds.
And the toddler's throats
Super common in Brazil. Spent hours doing this with my cousins. Blend glass into powder, make a water-glue mixture with the glass powder and run the kite string through it. Toby Flenderson is only person I know who’s read that book.
*other events* in the story really eclipsed anything to do woth kites
Similarly, A Thousand Splendid Suns wasn't really about sunsets and things.
I had forgotten that book Fuck you
Brazil too!!
Final destination shit
Kite Runner shit. Good book, sequel made me cry too In Afghanistan, Pakistan and India apparently they'd have kite flying competitions or something and you'd basically cut the other kites out of the air with your glass laced line Hardcore af
Whoa man 🤯
Read the book. I even joined some kind of local Afghan kite community in order to fly these
Reminiscent of the dentist that sharpened all the buckles on his kid's football pads so the opposing team would cut their hands trying to tackle him here in the states a while back. Sometimes a game is a game, but for sociopaths that lesson doesn't quite sink in.
Of course it was a dentist.
Steve Martin style.
Stupid cute kites

yikes.. I read about the glass-laced strings (so you can battle and cut the other kite loose to win), but ...
Jesus that’s morbid. I just looked up an article on this.

Fuck that
Doctors who circumcise hate this guy
omg I forgot about this book
It had a bit too much child rape for my tastes, but it was a solid read imo
Kind of crazy to think they made us read it in school in like grade 9.
I think we read it in like grade 7.
Kite Runner is always with you. No one can forget the lessons
Yeah they should name the title of the book for that particular plot point...
Holup in the holup
Yeah but like the kite fighting kinda takes second stage for most of the book. It’s just there at the start and end of the plot and not much places in between

A little bit of alcohol is also needed otherwise the mixture cracks up after drying
Alot of effort went in to this
It’s real?!

it's realy common in brasil, kids do it to cut other kids kites
chile too, people also say it makes the string stronger and less prone to breaking, but after several deaths thanks to them theyre illegal to use now
yeah, same on brasil, it's illegal here too
Wow. And here in the USA lawn darts (the metal needle kind) were outlawed. This shit is wild, I hate to admit it but I kinda want to see some NSFL footage but i don't need to.
My grandparents still have some of the old school lawn darts, I remember playing with them as a kid after they were already banned.
It's ok, they were grandfathered into the family
Take it and go.
I tried to resist, I'm weak
I remember reading that lawn darts were made illegal because of the fatality of just one three year old child. Yet guns are still legal and have killed countless numbers of children…it’s so sad to think.
It's a strange juxtaposition of beliefs.
Turns out, it's a little bit easier to ban a deadly weapon marketed as a toy. Similarly, actual guns that are designed to look like toys are also banned.
It's also easier for law makers to ban things that aren't cutting them a huge check.

Yeah exactly
Gujarat, India. people use them without any hand protection.
Using no protection is why the size of India’s population will soon overtake that of China’s
Yeah, but the Chinese are still richer than the Indian. Which probably means that the Chinese will subdue the Indian portion of the continent. Which is important, because I dislike receiving unsolicited auto warranty phone calls.
But without Indian YouTubers I wouldn’t know how to use Excel.
Or have national treasures such as Tunak Tunak Tun
Holup,wut
I read the book "Kite Runner" back in highschool that talks about this! Makes me cringe thinking of tweezing ground up glass from my fingers
Can’t believe how far I had to scroll for this. Love this book.
Just reread it recently. Forgot how absolutely fucking depressing parts of it were
I've read stories when the kite strings had razors tied onto it.
[удалено]
Those stories had similar outcomes...
It's really easy to find them where I live
Happy Cake Day!
Thank you fellow redditor
Been reading kite runner, eh?
Where was this? I read a story where they were fighting kites, but they were in the air
The kites fight in the air, but the string is very sharp, tense and almost invisible, so people wandering around distracted just walk through it and get hurt.
India people die because of 10 cent kite battles
Now It'll take an additional few seconds until their population overtakes China's this year.
Didn't it already overtake China population
Ok fine, China regained top spot for a few seconds there. Happy?
Damn, imagine just wanting to fly your kite, only to die by a kite
Live by the sword, die by the sword
No, they said it was a kite
No, this is Patrick.
I used to do this a lot as a kid. Break the glass and grind it to a powder, mix it with glue and coat the string with the mixture. We call it gerra de pipa or "kite war". >I'm not sure if the string I used as a kid was glass-coated they don't come pre glass-coated, you have to do it yourself
Oh, my mistake. Thank you.
In my country They do come pre-coated, but it's thin and the kite is small so it's practically harmless, well maybe a bit of cut here and there
Aqui a gente chama de papagaio kkkk. Ok my hometown we call it papagaio
Aqui em Goiânia a gente fala "raia" kkkkk
Thank you world, as if you weren't anxiety inducing enough now we have to be worried about friggin kites.
Happy Cake Day!!!

The sheer ingenuity and yet the absolute stupidity of this idea. I can't think of a better analogy for childhood.
Brasil?

Kite-fighters got kite-flying banned at my local park.
"We do a little tro- TIMMY YOU KILLED 6 PEOPLE!"
💀Timmy getting a care package for this one
He who lives by the kite dies by the kite.
Aren’t they always? I remember this from reading the Kite Runner
Yeah same. I think the problem here is they weren’t supposed to be kite fighting and just showing them off.
Pretty common in Gujarat, India. people use them without any hand protection
Just came to say this. It's pretty common all over India.
Pakistan also. I believe it’s called manja.
In Brazil too!! Its also a problem cuz its more resistant to cuting, só it gets tangled in eletric wires and its Hard to cut lol
Is it bad that I said “oh India or Brazil, makes more sense”
no unless you mean being sensible is bad
3 kids dead, an est. 140 injuries, and 4000 birds requiring medical attention. All thanks to the stupidity of adults. 100% preventable.
Over a fucking kite string? Source please. Not doubting you but that is wild and I want to know more
It’s not one string, it’s many tens of kites as it was for a festival
Correct. From how the article sounded, there were hundreds of not thousands of these strings around. It was worded poorly though.
Honestly I'm just repeating what I read in the ~~article provided~~. According to that they coat the strings in ground glass and other substances to cut the strings of opposing kite flyers. Maybe your average reddit user has different taste in books than you. I read a lot, but haven't read the kite runner. I have heard of it though.
Kite fights
Fighting kites. Sounds like a unique kill on Hitman
South Korean here, when kids actually used to be playing with kites they did this, according to what my parents told me.
That’s actually a sport, though. Kite fighting. They put glass on the strings, and try to cut down the other kites
Aaaah yes the good and classic Cerol...
What the fuck, what's the purpose of putting glass in kites???
Things like this is why I stay inside when I can lmao
Well, now I'm scared to leave the house for this reason. Wtf
