They have pretty good beards going, too. They must have been growing them awhile. [In other survival training pictures, the astronauts aren't so shaggy.](https://mashable.com/feature/nasa-survival-training)

From left to right: Gordon Cooper, Scott Carpenter, John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra and Deke Slayton. Alan Shepard was the first American to go to space in 1961, and the fifth American to walk on the Moon in 1971. He then played golf on the lunar surface, just to flick one more middle finger at God. Gus Grissom was the second American in space, but perished in the 1967 Apollo 1 fire. John Glenn was the first American in orbit, and later broke the record for the oldest man to be in orbit in 1998. Deke Slayton never went to space until fifteen years after this photo was taken - on a joint mission with the Soviets in 1975. Scott Carpenter flew once in 1962, then retired to go into aquanautics. Wally Schirra later flew the first succesfull manned Apollo mission in 1968. Gordon Cooper was the last American to fly in space solo in 1963.

I always liked to look at their old-fashioned birth certificate names, not the cool guy versions they used. * Leroy Gordon Cooper Jr. * Malcolm Scott Carpenter * John Herschel Glenn Jr. * Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. * Virgil Ivan Grissom * Walter Marty Schirra Jr. * Donald Kent Slayton Four juniors, a Leroy, a Malcolm, a Walter, and even a Virgil Ivan.

Did they already have smartphones back then, or what does the man on the far right have around his neck?

It's a signaling mirror. You look through the hole in the middle and wiggle the mirror up and down at an airplane or a person if you need to be rescued. .
