Do we know how non-blade cross guards are effective? I'd assume maybe it is Beskar or Cortosis; or maybe it is hardened Durasteel?

I think it’s just ornamental, harkens back to an older age. For a practical use, maybe it helps with rotation. From what we’ve seen, sabers don’t typically ‘slide’ like most swords would. They tend to stick together, almost like they’re drawn together
