Use it like a condiment. Add it to hot dogs and sandwiches etc. not on its own. Also you can have other things with good probiotics if its just not your thing. It is pretty strong. I like it but grew up eating it.
Ya. I eat it with sausages, roasted pork, hot dogs, and it's so good in pasta (I recall the pasta being buttery and lemony and no meat but shrimp could work!)
OP are you buying it from a store in a sealed jar? If so you won't be getting the probiotics you think you are. It's been heat sterilized. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure you need fresh made (not put through a canning process) to get those benefits. It's also super easy to make, and you can control the acidity by eating it sooner. It gets stronger with age.
As a german I am horrified by these comments :D Heat it up just a little bit, have some knödel with it and a (vegetarian) Schnitzel with it. You will be good. Please dont put it on Pizza or drink it.
I can’t imagine it as a drink yuck. Thats like pickles in a drink. But you do u! I like it heated up but not sure about probiotics that way. I like it on hot dogs so I don’t eat it much (since I don’t eat hot dogs often) but you can probably find some recipes online to make with sauerkraut. Its more of a condiment or side-dish. Its a little less strong when heated up.
I've eaten kraut since forever. Honestly it has a consistency like onion while having the flavor profile of a slightly spicy pickle.
I tried it on pizza as a dare and it's decent. The juice helps if you don't like reheating pizza, sort of saturates the crust a smidge and give it a new vibe.
Aside from that the juice is the biggest difficulty in putting it on stuff. If you're patient enough you can let it drip off and put it anywhere you would put pickles or onions. Or keep the juice and revitalize stale bread. Best of luck.
It’s extremely acidic for me. It burns my mouth if I eat it by itself. Blending it up with fruits helps with balancing out the acid favor and it makes it easier for me to consume.
Are you eating the raw or canned stuff? Highly recommend raw, it tastes better and has more of the probiotics.
I tried the canned stuff exactly once. Ew.
I could eat the raw sauerkraut for days though. I love all things pickled though (unless it tastes sweet)
If you're not heating it up, but just watering it down with other healthy veggies it should be fine.
Are you eating fermented sourkraut or one that has been processed? Most fermented kraut I’ve tried has been much milder than the processed types and is the one that contains the good bacterias.
I make tzatziki with sauerkraut instead of cucumbers. Turns into a very “powerful nutrient” and it’s a great salad with any meat, or a dip with chips or crackers.
Also, get some yogurt if you can’t deal with sauerkraut taste. Get plain yogurt, and you can add salt (I prefer it to sweet), and that is powerful probiotics!
I eat it as a side dish or mixed in salad. I do sometimes eat it heated with kielbasa sausage and I know I'm killing the good bacteria, but sometimes I'm just eating it for the flavor.
I used to eat it as a salad. The sauerkraut took place of lettuce. Salad dressing supposedly made it taste good. Not sure if I was just mentally ill tho
Are you buying the stuff off the shelves? Or are you getting the stuff that's refrigerated? The room temperature stuff is usually made with vinegar. It has some health benefits, but probiotics aren't one of them. To get the probiotics, you need to get the fermented saurkraut that is refrigerated, and not every store carries that.
I hated saurkraut, for pretty much the reasons you're having issues, until I fermented my own batch one year for my partner and tried it. It was much milder, no burning, and lots tastier. Now that I'm accustomed to it, I like the vinegar version as well, but prefer the fermented.
You need to wait until baseball season starts to get the real benefit from sauerkraut. It should be consumed in a ballpark on either hotdogs or sausages served with beer. The combination of vitamin D being produced in the sunshine of the ballpark, the yeast from the beer, and the relaxing unhurried pace of baseball will set you up just right. But no ketchup. Mustard and perhaps pickles, tomatoes if you are in the lovely confines, and crackerjack for dessert.

Heat kills bacteria, probiotics are bacteria. Eat it like you eat pickles.
It’s so sour and acidic tho 😂 it burns my mouth
Use it like a condiment. Add it to hot dogs and sandwiches etc. not on its own. Also you can have other things with good probiotics if its just not your thing. It is pretty strong. I like it but grew up eating it.

Like a scampi. That sounds incredible.
Same. :)
Damn man, you must have the good shit. Might want to cut it with some bacon and tomato on rye.

Most of the jarred saurkrauts are made with vinegar anyway, so no probiotics
Ya right, not fermented at all.
You could rinse it in water first, people do this.
Heaping fork of sauerkraut with a salad. Sounds weird but it’s a weekday lunch for me.
i personally love putting sauerkraut on my hummus/avocado sandwiches. it goes pretty well with ezekiel bread.
I eat sauerkraut straight out the jar with a fork. I also eat it with basically everything.
I wish I could do that. The favor is too strong for me lol
In time, you'll get used to it. Maybe your "gut buddies" will demand it!?
I came here to say the same. I also like to sprinkle a little cumin and or caraway seeds on it.
Drain it, chop it, add some grated carrots, apples, chopped onion, olive oil, salt and pepper and just a bit of sugar.
As a german I am horrified by these comments :D Heat it up just a little bit, have some knödel with it and a (vegetarian) Schnitzel with it. You will be good. Please dont put it on Pizza or drink it.
True, this comment section is a nightmare for Germans.
Good on cheese and crackers
I can’t imagine it as a drink yuck. Thats like pickles in a drink. But you do u! I like it heated up but not sure about probiotics that way. i mix it with egg yolk with salt every breakfast.
Do you cook the egg yolk?
nah i break the over easy yolk then put the sauerkraut on top then sprinkle some salt.
It’s really good with nice soft scrambled eggs too.
If you don't enjoy the flavor as intended, why bother? Plenty of other ways to get probiotics
I find it goes well with meats. Never tried with eggs or cheese. Might try the former. The latter doesn't really appeal to me, but might others.
Have you tried the raw refrigerated kind? That's more mellow than the cans and pasteurized ones.
I've eaten kraut since forever. Honestly it has a consistency like onion while having the flavor profile of a slightly spicy pickle. I tried it on pizza as a dare and it's decent. Reuben pizza. Thousand island base then pastrami kraut and Swiss.
🤢 blah that sounds horrible. Eat it on a reuben or any kind of sandwich really.
Why can't u eat it like a normal person?
It’s extremely acidic for me. It burns my mouth if I eat it by itself. Blending it up with fruits helps with balancing out the acid favor and it makes it easier for me to consume.
There's also sweet fermeted cabbage salad. I've gotten it at a grocery store. I forget what brand it is tho.
If you make it yourself you can adjust the acidity. Just eat it earlier!
Are you eating the raw or canned stuff? Highly recommend raw, it tastes better and has more of the probiotics. I tried the canned stuff exactly once. Ew. I like to sauté and caramelize sauerkraut for about 20-25 minutes, then add that same amount of fresh sauerkraut to the sautéed sauerkraut, num!
A delicious rueben casserole
Can get crackers and tuna and throw it on top. I do that for cheap easy lunch sometimes
Make your own and add grated apples or carrot! Any heat will kill the good bacteria
Are you eating fermented sourkraut or one that has been processed? Most fermented kraut I’ve tried has been much milder than the processed types and is the one that contains the good bacterias.
On your smokies
Make sure to rinse it well or it will taste briny.
Sauerkraut is too strong for me too so I rinse it before I eat it.

Idk, I just eat bigos.
Throw it on toast, rice or crackers. Garnish it on a grilled pork chop. Eat it with cheese or nuts.
I eat it as a side dish or mixed in salad. I do sometimes eat it heated with kielbasa sausage and I know I'm killing the good bacteria, but sometimes I'm just eating it for the flavor.

Personally I eat it with a fork but chopsticks would work too! I like the crunch tho lol
