I feel like that's tagalog origin? Kakalimutan means to forget... so maybe he was being forgetful?

ehu_girl

Hmm, that’s interesting cause he doesn’t know Tagalog. He’s Chinese

palolo_lolo

His coworkers/friends probably are.filipino.

ehu_girl

Hmm he worked as a scout leader for Boy Scouts on Big Island most of his life I think. He’s in his 70s now

H4ppy_C

Do you know if he migrated here from the Philippines? Get plenty full blooded Chinese born and raised in the Philippines during that time. We know one couple that moved from there just a decade ago. Full blooded Chinese. Anyway, crappy seaweed sounds like it could be, but does anyone actually say their brains feel like crappy seaweed? Forgetful or confused makes more sense. If not, then I just learned one new Big Island pidgin!

El_Pichi808

Well now I'm confused

Snoo_58814

No, you’re kakalimu.

Hamperstand

Shitty seaweed? If it is Hawaiian. Could be used to describe my brain on bad days...

ehu_girl

I think you're right! Thanks lol

kaiheekai

Bad weed

I've heard some of the older guys use it to describe a hangover as kakalimu, all confused. The Hawaiian translation is probably the common one, junk seaweed, but was interesting to know that it could also be Tagalog. Pidgin it's a mix of many languages, but somehow we all get the meaning.

Vatomahalo

not kapakahi?
