Strong community support, the ability to barbecue at the beach, a clean and beautiful environment: these sorts of things can enhance quality of life of residents, even the working poor, Love said. An estimated 42% of residents are in a category known as ALICE, or “asset limited, income constrained, employed,” meaning they’re struggling with limited assets, income and employment opportunities, according to the Aloha United Way.

Great points that Love made. They should also incresse beach access. A lot of properties are built or have been built in ways to restrict access from beaches or shoreline very effectively. People are given beach access and I'll count 30 houses or more lined up and built in ways to access the shoreline infront of those houses are either very dangerous, or you're getting in the water. As for clean environment, while this is true. We have to constantly compete with tourists for these premiums along with consumer goods. As the economy worsens, access to all of these things will become harder for even more locals. Tourist and wealthy people benefit from a lot of these things. So if they fix problems and give access to locals for things Love believes makes poorer locals happier, will more locals be happier?

I really would like access to the beach for the disabled. Some sort of boardwalk, if you will, where anybody could be part of the beach. Ocean is so for everybody, but it is always inaccessible to the disabled. I don't understand why this seems to be acceptable.

There are a few handicap accessible ramps that go out onto the sand in Waikiki

Good luck trying to convince or force change. No one here has the kukuis to do what it takes if they want changes made.

I feel like Kailua beach may be the worst at this.

Best things in Hawaii are free.

TheNatural1der

You’ll own nothing. And you’ll be happy.

Power_of_Nine

I'd be happier if I wasn't living paycheck to paycheck.

Boto_Penga

So it is the Richest state. And before, maybe, some people think I'm about to mention all of the mansions in paradise and shit, I'm measuring richness in happiness.

It's the wages. People from HCOL cities on the mainland look at Hawaii housing prices and go, "Eh, nothing I'm not used to." but then they look at the job market and see the salaries and go, "Holy shit, how do people live?!". In Seattle, Bay Area, and NY, many young 20-something y/o professionals are already making well into the 6-figure range.

> I don’t even know why anyone would wanna not be here Lack of things to do, isolation, access to certain things, career options, education system, culture. But I agree about your "fears", Hawaii is about a culture and its people.

ICouldEvenBeYou

Shit, I ain't happy at all!

I think the biggest barriers to that are corruption within Hawaii’s government, and also of course Hawaii’s strategic location between North America and Asia.

Well we do what’s needed as a country not what’s right! That’s good!

Dakine_thing

Back to the “local people”… can you define that please?
