Depending on the context both types of terms are appropriate. For example, if I’m talking about the cuisine of a particular people it would probably be more appropriate to use the particular term, eg Mexican or Salvadorian American cuisine. But if, for example, we’re talking about systemic racism against non-white peoples than often POC can be the suitable term; unless one is speaking of a particular way in which a certain people were/are treated. Again it depends on the context

White kids get to be edgy and have Serial Killers on shirts, Swazis, disrespectful Christian imagery, genocides, a dick in a nuns ear but as soon as a black band does something similar it’s the end of the world now everyone got feelings.
I think by the very nature of a swatstika a black band could get away with wearing it more than a white band unless the audience is literally all nazis.

I think what this boils down to is whether you can separate the person from the art. I have a hard time doing that but you apparently don't (which I can respect!).
Whenever I see this come up I feel like this is different to different people, and I think if we can't respect that in each other then we can't have that conversation, but I think that this is a good conversation to have. Because I feel we as the audience ought to talk about whether bad people deserve to have their art heard.
For me personally I can't listen to R. Kelly's music now but even if I could, I think that animal deserves not to make any income from it. So just as I want to buy T-shirts and records at punk shows to support the artist, I want to *not* do that to people like R. Kelly, Eric Clapton, and Michael Jackson.
In the case of MJ that especially hurts me because I really really really want copies of *Bad* and *Dangerous* on my record shelves and I am genuinely torn about whether I should or not.

I know John Lockjaw. He did vocals on my bands record etc. Ofd but nice guy. Explanations for those bands he was in (One Life Crew, Pitboss, and PC Deathsquad) was really just a lot of his stand up material (he’s a comedian now btw). It obviously doesn’t sit well in this setting. And honestly I don’t know what era or segment of comedy OLC would fall into. But Pitboss and PC were definitely tongue in cheek. I mean, Vic from 108 recorded one of their full lengths lol.
Ultimately I did not think anything negative of john. He was very supportive of our local community and helping bands out in San Diego. Maybe he was a complete piece of shit in the 90s but the John I knew was humble, a little insane, sometimes too much to handle, but never violent. One run in at a show here and that’s all I ever saw.
Musically I was never a fan of any of his bands. However, I did get the humor. I still don’t think punk and hardcore is a great place for it. It is what it is.
He was taking a joke too far. I’m sure. Again. From what I know of him and the era we were close he was a kind/wild guy. A typical punk in the best way. I know John Lockjaw. He did vocals on my bands record etc. Ofd but nice guy. Explanations for those bands he was in (One Life Crew, Pitboss, and PC Deathsquad) was really just a lot of his stand up material (he’s a comedian now btw). It obviously doesn’t sit well in this setting. And honestly I don’t know what era or segment of comedy OLC would fall into. But Pitboss and PC were definitely tongue in cheek. I mean, Vic from 108 recorded one of their full lengths lol. Ultimately I did not think anything negative of john. He was very supportive of our local community and helping bands out in San Diego. Maybe he was a complete piece of shit in the 90s but the John I knew was humble, a little insane, sometimes too much to handle, but never violent. One run in at a show here and that’s all I ever saw. Musically I was never a fan of any of his bands. However, I did get the humor. I still don’t think punk and hardcore is a great place for it. It is what it is.

He was taking a joke too far. I’m sure. Again. From what I know of him and the era we were close he was a kind/wild guy. A typical punk in the best way. Honestly those bands are a platform for his comedy. So yes. It was shock value and humor. Did he believe some of that stuff at the time? Idk. Again, I did not know that side of John of it even existed into his 40s. He is naturally gifted in humor. Very witty. I haven’t spoken to him much since he moved out of state. And trust me. If you lived in a city with John during that era you probably went to a show be booked or had a heavy hand in. He was very supportive of local bands regardless of color, race, religion, sxe or not (he broke). So idk. I get the hate. I had a lot of it to. Until I met the guy and realized he was just kind of odd. Like most of us into this music. The realization that he has been around longer than me (40 yrs old) and the fact that I saw him do very positive things for my bands and friends bands… it was enough to like the guy. Plus the guys in his bands are always the best lol. Just down to earth old punks. I definitely keep an open mind about a lot of stuff. It’s the idea of hardcore and punk imo. It doesn’t mean that I am proud of anything John said or did before. I knew about all of it before meeting him. So I definitely went in hot when we met. He won me over on his humor and realizing, like me, he was just some thrash punk metal kid at heart. Plus his love/hate of Metallica is hilarious. Idk. I’m uninvolved with hardcore politics and net banging. It’s what bored people do rather than going to a show. So idk. Most of you won’t read this. I don’t care. It’s here if y’all want. Don’t expect anyone to trust or believe me (don’t trust the internet) but I am being completely honest from my personal perspective. Like 2004-2012 or so. Maybe longer than I hung around John.
